Opis:
In December 2019, a new disease, similar to severe acute respiratory syndrome (SARS), was reported in Wuhan, China. It was quickly indicated that the causative agent of this new coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) is a previously unknown coronavirus, now called SARS coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2). The result of the global outbreak of COVID-19 in the world (currently COVID-19 is present on all continents, except Antarctica) is the pandemic status 2019–2020, as declared by the WHO and Public Health Emergency of International Concern (PHEIC).The virus has a high epidemic potential and is effectively transmitted between humans. The primary route for SARS-CoV-2 infection to spread is air-droplet transmission. In addition, SARS-CoV-2 can be transmitted through direct contact with an infected person, or indirectly via coronavirus-contaminated materials or objects. Current data also indicate the possibility of an alternative route of SARS-CoV-2 infection – through the gastrointestinal tract. The article discusses various SARS-CoV-2 transmission options, with particular attention paid to the role of saliva and gastrointestinal tract in the spreading of the virus. Current data on SARS-CoV-2 pathogenicity and clinical symptoms of COVID-19 are also analyzed. Expanding knowledge about SARS-CoV-2 infection, especially in terms of its spread, will contribute to further actions aimed at preventing transmission of this pathogen.

Opis:
When faced with a chronic disease such as rheumatoid arthritis, the patient attempts to cope with the stressful situation by applying coping strategies. The main aim of rheumatoid treatment is not only improving health but also increasing the quality of life. The research objective was to determine the relationship among socio-demographic factors, duration of the disease and its associated ailments, attitude to the disease, self-assessment of one’s knowledge of RA, and the application of coping strategies in stressful situations by women with rheumatoid arthritis. The study involved 193 patients of the Clinic of Rheumatology and Systemic Connective Tissue Diseases, and the Rheumatology Unit of the Specialist Outpatient Clinic of the Independent Public Teaching Hospital No. 4 in Lublin, from November 2016 – June 2017. The Coping Orientations to Problems Experienced Inventory (COPE) Questionnaire and an author’s Original Questionnaire were used in the study. Analysis of variance (ANOVA) and Tukey’s range test were applied for statistical analysis. A p-value<0.05 defined the statistical differences. Analysis was performed using the commercial SPSS Statistics 19 software (IBM Corp., Armonk, NY, USA). The respondents usually use instrumental social support (11.5±1.7), focus on and vent emotions (11.4±1.9), use emotional social support (11.4±1.8), employ active coping (11.4±2.1) and positive reinterpretation and growth (11.2±1.8), and least often rely on their sense of humour (5.5±1.4) or use alcohol or drugs (5±1.1). The factors which determine the types of strategy used are age, education, the duration of the disease, ailments experienced, and attitude towards the disease. Those respondents who declared a greater knowledge of RA more often applied positive reinterpretation and growth, and more rarely used alcohol or drugs. In the treatment and rehabilitation processes it is important to reinforce in the patient positive expectations for the treatment, seek advantages and benefits in one’s present health status, and educate patients about the disease, its therapy and appropriate coping strategies.

Ranavirus was detected in adult sheatfish, with clinical signs, on a Polish fish farm in February. Farm isolates induced a strong cytopathic effect in vitro and were identified by electron microscopy and PCR amplification of the ranavirus specific gene fragment. Restriction analysis with the Acc I enzyme showed that isolated ranaviruses were different from the epizootic heamatopoietic necrosis virus (EHNV). We sequenced a fragment of the major capsid protein (MCP) gene and found that isolates were similar to other strains of ranaviruses, available in GenBank.

Opis:
Radon and its short-lived disintegration products are the most significant factors of exposure to ionizing radiation from natural sources. Białystok has the population of about 300,000 inhabitants in 100,460 flats in 16,282 houses. They are mostly one-family houses (about 80.7per cent) and two-family houses (8.2 per cent). It can be estimated that about 2/3 of the Białystok inhabitants live in the so-called “blocks of flats”. The study aimed at evaluation of the exposure to radon present in the flats. The integral method of trace detectors was used to measure radon concentration indoors. All values of the radon concentration were the mean annual values as they were obtained on annual exposure or were calculated and corrected to annual exposure based on shorter periods of time. Radon concentration distribution in flats of 3 housing estates in Białystok was analyzed. The effective dose of inhaled radon per a statistical inhabitant of Białystok (about 1.1 mSv) per year was calculated on the basis of mean values of radon concentration. Inhabitants of one-family houses obtained slightly higher annual doses – 1.4 mSv while the inhabitants of block of flats got lower annual doses – 0.8 mSv.

Photoluminescence studies of molecular beam epitaxy grown ZnSe-on-GaAs layers are presented. The high sensitivity of the PL technique allowed for identification unintentional dopants in pure ZnSe sample. Characteristic photoluminescence lines due to extended defects were observed. The experimental results obtained show a correlation between intentional doping level and extended defects concentration. We conclude also that even though molecular beam epitaxy layers are grown at low temperature, the self-compensation mechanism may still be important. For heavily doped sample edge emission is deactivated likely due to efficient energy transfer link with deep donor-acceptor pair bands.

radon in water

liquid scintillation
Opis:
Water is one of the indoor sources of 222Rn. As radon is soluble in water, it is carried indoor by water supply and there it is released. The presence of radon in groundwaters is caused by direct migration of 222Rn from rocks and soil to waters as well as by radium content in water. Radon inflow indoor is possible in the areas where drinking water shows high radon concentration. Radon concentration changes significantly from low in natural surface water to relatively high from water in drilled wells. It is estimated that out of 10,000 Bq·m–3 of radon contained in water supply we can obtain radon concentration increase by 1 Bq·m–3 indoor. The aim of the study was to measure radon in water supply in the Białystok region and also estimation of doses and investigation how the treatment influenced radon concentration in water. Water was collected from rural and municipal waterworks as well as from home wells. Measurements of radon concentration in particular stages of drawing and treatment of water in Białystok waterworks were also conducted. A liquid scintillation method was used in the study. The arithmetic mean of radon concentrations in the samples was equal to 5800 Bq·m–3, median – 4800 Bq·m–3, and geometric mean – 4600 Bq·m–3. The lowest values of radon concentration were observed in surface waters (from surface intake). Radon concentrations in waters from drilled wells, shallow home wells and surface intake were compared and statistically significant differences were obtained at p < 0.05. The results of radon concentrations in drinking water in the Białystok area revealed radon-poor waters (88%) and low-radon waters (12%).

Opis:
Malaria remains a major health issue In the world, while in Poland no cases of the indigenous disease have been observed since 60-ties of the last century, but the number of cases imported from the epidemic areas is increasing. The aim of work was to analyse the epidemiology of malaria diagnosed and treated in the Department of Infectious Diseases and Hepatology, Pomeranian Medical University, Szczecin, Poland from 1.02.2010 until 31.01.2011. In total 11 cases were found, all diagnoses based on the thick and thin blood smear microscopy, alongside to the standard laboratory analyses. All clinical data presented are based on the case history. Results: Majoriry of cases reported travel to Sub-Saharan Africa (45%) or Indian subcontinent (27%). The travel was usually for recreational purposes, with significant proportion (45%) of patient not taking the malaria prophylaxis. Clinical course of infections was largely mild, with dominance of Pl. Falciparum parasitaemia. Fever was the most common clinical symptom (90%), while in the routine laboratory test no significant abnormalities, suggesting the disease, were found. Conclusions: malaria should be suspected in every case of the returning traveler with fever, especially if the travel was to the endemic area. The exclusion of the disease cannot be based on routine laboratory tests or quick immunoassays – thick and thin blood smear microscopy must be performed.
Do analizy zakwalifikowano 11 przypadków malarii hospitalizowanych w Oddziale Chorób Zakaźnych i Hepatologii.

Opis:
Six radon laboratories, which perform indoor radon measurements to jointly investigate temporal variations of radon concentration in houses in a couple of regions in Poland, participated in the intercomparison exercise. There are involved three commercially available Hungarian RadoSys systems and four own laboratory methods. All of them are based on the etched-track CR-39 detectors. The intercomparison was conducted in a calibration laboratory of the Central Laboratory for Radiological Protection (CLOR), Warsaw, Poland, accredited by the Polish Center for Accreditation (previously AP 101, at present AP 057). Comparison measurements were performed during three expositions in the CLOR’s radon calibration chamber under controlled normal climatic conditions and steady radon concentration. The results were referred to the value of the radon concentration determined by AlphaGUARD monitor traceable to the primary 222Rn standard in Physikalisch-Technische Bundesanstalt (PTB), Braunchweig, Germany. The mean performance ratio defined as a ratio of the reference to participant’s result range from 0.88 to 1.31.

Opis:
At the beginning of the year 2016, the representatives of the Polish Radon Centre decided to organize proficiency tests (PTs) for measurements of radon gas and radon decay products in the air, involving radon monitors and laboratory passive techniques. The Silesian Centre for Environmental Radioactivity of the Central Mining Institute (GIG), Katowice, became responsible for the organization of the PT exercises. The main reason to choose that location was the radon chamber in GIG with a volume of 17 m3 , the biggest one in Poland. Accordingly, 13 participants from Poland plus one participant from Germany expressed their interest. The participants were invited to inform the organizers about what types of monitors and methods they would like to check during the tests. On this basis, the GIG team prepared the proposal for the schedule of exercises, such as the required level(s) of radon concentrations, the number and periods of tests, proposed potential alpha energy concentration (PAEC) levels and also the overall period of PT. The PT activity was performed between 6th and 17th June 2016. After assessment of the results, the agreement between radon monitors and other measurement methods was confirmed. In the case of PAEC monitors and methods of measurements, the results of PT exercises were consistent and confirmed the accuracy of the calibration procedures used by the participants. The results of the PAEC PTs will be published elsewhere; in this paper, only the results of radon intercomparison are described.
