Opis:
Introduction. The standard porcine-derived pancreatic enzyme replacement therapy (PERT) is a lifesaving treatment for patients with diseases causing exocrine pancreatic insufficiency (EPI). An attempt to replace PERT with microbial enzymes were undertaken. The aim was to highlight whether the mode of application, mixed with food or applied directly to the stomach, of pancreatic-like enzymes of microbial origin (PLEM) can affect their activity along the gastrointestinal tract. Materials and method. The activity of amylase, lipase and proteinase in the stomach, duodenum and ileum were tested in EPI pigs (n=6) after supplementation of PLEM, either orally – before and during feed consumption – or via the stomach – before and during feed consumption. Healthy pigs not treated with PLEM (n=3) served as controls. Activity of the enzymes measured in the chyme were obtained together with the digesta pH. Activity of the enzymatic residues in the stool samples was also checked. Results. The highest pancreatic enzyme activities were found in the duodenum of the healthy pigs (amylase 162,68 kU/ mL, lipase 507,34 kU/mL and protolitic (trypsin) activity 357,60 kU/mL). Nevertheless, the microbial enzymes remained also active along the entire length of the GIT – including stomach in EPI pigs, regardless of their route of administration. However, activity level was significantly lower. Discussion. Results indicate that the activity pattern of PLEM in the small intestine mimics the activity of the natural endogenous pancreatic enzymes in healthy pigs. The most physiological features of PLEM were observed when enzymes were offered orally. The magnitude of PLEM activity in the stomach of EPI pigs was essential and significantly higher than that measured in healthy pigs, thus being somewhat not physiological, and for health reasons of the patients should be further explored. Interestingly, specific trypsin-like activity was measured in all parts of the GIT after PLEM application. However, proteolytic activity of the experimental proteaze in in vitro studies did not exhibit trypsin-like activity.

Opis:
The article refers to the previous work of the authors, in which the model of traffic organization of cooperating trains including the optimization of the use of energy returned to the catenary was presented. In the presented article, the model was modified by changing the main control variable, which affects the efficient use of energy. Departure time was changed for the arrival time of the train to the stop or station. The optimization is done by controlling the arrival time to the station in the acceptable (scheduled) range while maintaining the scheduled departure time. This model assumed optimization using the interval halving method (bisection) to achieve the optimal solution. The modified optimization method has been implemented in the original model of railway traffic organization. It considers the optimal use of energy recovered during electrodynamic braking using the energy transmission strategy to the catenary, assuming the cooperation of a train pair and volume of all recovered energy and stop time at the station.

Opis:
This work aims at study the effect of the operating conditions like equivalence ration and temperature on the updraft gasification of beech wood. The main aspects was to analyze the influence of temperature distribution in the reactor and equivalence ratio on the fuel consumption, syngas composition as well as tar formation characteristics during the gasification process. The light tar content and composition were analysed using gas chromatography coupled with mass spectrometry (GC-MS). Experimental results have shown that the amount of air supplied does not affect the parameters of the gasification process linearly. For lower ER value there was high fuel consumption and high bed temperature in the gasifier, which results in high caloric value of syngas. The results showed that tar yield during updraft gasification depends on the temperature and equivalence ratio. With the increase value of ER and the decrease of temperature on the surface of the bed, the total amount of tar yield increased. The highest temperature on the surface of the bed leads to the smallest tar yield, which can be associated with thermal cracking. The results indicate that both light and heavy tar are changing nonlinearly with different operating conditions. In addition, with decreasing temperature and increasing ER values, the amount of phenol and oxidized aliphatic compounds in the tar samples increased while the BTEX amount decreased. The amount of PAHs, in relation to the temperature and ER, was kept low in all cases.

Opis:
The aim of this study was to compare and analyze the gasification process of beech wood. The experimental investigation was conducted inside a gasifier, which can be operated in downdraft and updraft gasification system. The most important operating parameter studied in this paper was the influence of the amount of supply air on the temperature distribution, biomass consumption and syngas calorific value. The results show that the amount of air significantly influences the temperature in the combustion zone for the downdraft gasification process, where temperature differences reached more than 150 °C. The increased amount of air supplied to the gasifier caused an increase in fuel consumption for both experimental setups. Experimental results regarding equivalence ratio show that for value below 0.2, the updraft gasification is characterized by a higher calorific value of producer gas, while for about 0.22 a similar calorific value (6.5 MJ/Nm3) for both gasification configurations was obtained. Above this value, an increase in equivalence ratio causes a decrease in the calorific value of gas for downdraft and updraft gasifiers.

The analysis of chemical composition of turkey feathers reveals over 50% mass content of carbon. Unfortunately, the feathers contain also over 13% by weight of nitrogen and over 2.5% of sulfur. The significant presence of nitrogen and sulfur in turkey feathers indicates potential danger to the environment. The experiments of thermal pyrolysis of turkey feathers were done from a perspective of energy production potential out of gaseous products. The products of thermal pyrolysis were mainly gas and liquid. The calorific value of pyrolysed feathers is comparable with the one of hard carbon. It gets higher for higher temperatures. The calorific value of gaseous products of turkey feathers at 850oC was maximum and it equalled 16.7 MJ/Nm3.

The results of pyrolysis of pine chips and refuse derived fuel fractions are presented. The experiments were carried out in a pilot pyrolysis reactor. The feedstock was analyzed by an elemental analyzer and the X-ray fluorescence spectrometer to determine the elemental composition. To find out optimum conditions for pyrolysis and mass loss as a function of temperature the thermogravimetric analysis was applied. Gases from the thermogravimetric analysis were directed to the infrared spectrometer using gas-flow cuvette to online analysis of gas composition. Chemical composition of the produced gas was measured using gas chromatography with a thermal conductivity detector and a flame ionization detector. The product analysis also took into account the mass balance of individual products.

Opis:
Background: Dietary supplements (DSs) are concentrated sources of nutrients and/or other substances, whose purpose is to supplement the normal diet. Their consumption in Poland has been on the rise, leading to numerous concerns. However, current legislation does not provide any background for a relevant pharmacovigilance system. Therefore, little is known about their adverse effects (AEs) or patterns of use in Poland. To shed some light on this, we conducted a nationwide survey. Aim of the study: To assess the prevalence of, and the reasons for, the use of dietary supplements in Poland via national survey with a collection and an analyse of supposed adverse effects of dietary supplements. Material and methods: The study was conducted using an online survey based on the original questionnaire. In this report, we present the results of the analysis of the first 200 responses. Results: As many as 55.5% (111) of respondents were ‘definitely sure’ or ‘rather sure’ about DSs safety. However, 70.5% (141) believed that they could have negative effects. Over 3/4 (153) of respondents used DSs themselves, and 61.0% (122) used them within last 12 months. Of those using DSs, 11.1% (17) reported diverse Aes, with GI tract irritation and mental disturbances being the most common (experienced by 35.3% (6), and 17.6% (3) of those reporting AE s, respectively). Conclusions: Respondents had mixed feelings about DS safety. Despite that, they used these products frequently. Of a note is high incidence of adverse effects experienced by DS users. This undoubtedly points to the need for a relevant pharmacovigilance system.
