Opis:
Formation of the soft magnetic nanostructure in amorphous Fe$\text{}_{41}$Ni$\text{}_{40}$Zr$\text{}_{7}$B$\text{}_{12}$ alloy due to heat treatment is studied by the Mössbauer, differential scanning calorimetry, and X-ray diffraction techniques. Annealing at temperatures 520-580ºC leads to the formation of extremely soft nanocrystalline alloy as revealed by the rf-Mössbauer measurements. The superparamagnetic behaviour was observed for the alloy annealed at 620-640ºC. At higher annealing temperatures good soft magnetic properties deteriorate.

alfa-to-gamma phase transformation in iron

Opis:
The paper presents the results of experiments on modification of pure iron by high-intensity nitrogen pulsed-plasma treatment. The duration of nitrogen plasma pulses is approximately 1 mi s, and the energy density amounts to about 5 J/cm2. Such pulses are capable to melt the surface layer of the substrate (1- 2 mi m) and to introduce a significant concentration of nitrogen into the molten layer. Nuclear reaction analysis (NRA), X-ray diffraction (XRD) and conversion electron Mössbauer spectroscopy (CEMS) were used for characterisation of the treated samples. The main results of the data analysis are as follows: it has been stated that such treatment leads to gradual transformation of initial alfa-phase into austenitic gamma structure in which expanded austenite gammaN is present. Treatment with 20 pulses results in almost complete transformation and introduces a retained dose of nitrogen estimated as 5.5 × 1017 N/cm2. The susceptibility for expansion of the lattice transformed to austenite in this way is smaller than in the case when the steel subjected to conventional nitriding is originally of austenite type. The analysis of the ratio of alfa to gammaN as a function of the nitrogen content provides a firm evidence that strong repulsion forces act between the first and the second nearest-neighbour nitrogen atoms in the fcc austenitic structure formed as a result of nitriding of pure iron by intense nitrogen plasma pulses.

Opis:
The German Shepherd seems to be most popular and widely used dog breed in the world and also in Poland. The aim of the work was to estimate inbreeding and relationship coefficients in the population of German Shepherd dogs from the herdbook of Cracow Branch of the Polish Kennel Club. As the material, four-generation pedigrees of 60 animals (17 dogs and 43 bitches) born in 1994-2005 were used. The inbreeding (FX) and relationship (RXY) coefficients among all animals for each sex separately and RXY between dogs and bitches were calculated. Among all 60 animals 54 were inbred (90%). The FX values for all and for inbred animals were: 0.1286 and 0.1429, respectively. In the group of 17 males 16 were inbred (over 94%) and in the group of 43 females 38 were inbred (88.4%). Average FX was 0.1560, 0.1178, 0.1658, 0.1333 for all dogs, all bitches, inbred dogs and inbred bitches, respectively. About 98.9% of 1770 pairs of individuals were related; for all and related pairs the values of RXY were 0.0391 and 0.0395, respectively. In 136 male pairs, 100% were related with average RXY 0.0414. For the females those values were 903 pairs and 98.4% related pairs with RXY 0.0353 and 0.0359, respectively. From the total number of 731 dog x bitch pairs 99.2% were related and average RXY were 0.0433 and 0.0436, respectively.
Owczarek niemiecki należy do najpopularniejszych i najwszechstronniej użytkowanych ras psów na świecie i w Polsce. Celem pracy było oszacowanie inbredu i spokrewnienia psów rasy owczarek niemiecki wpisanych do ksiąg Krakowskiego Oddziału ZK w Polsce. Materiał stanowiły czteropokoleniowe rodowody 60 zwierząt (17 psów i 43 suk) urodzonych w latach 1994-2005.

Opis:
Bacterial production and the accompanying environmental factors were measured in the water columns of two Arctic fjords during the cruise in July and August 2013. Water samples were collected at six stations located in the central part of Hornsund and Kongsfjorden. In Hornsund, where average water temperatures were 1.25-fold lower than in Kongsfjorden, the bacterial production was twice as high (0.116 ± 0.102 vs 0.05 ± 0.03 mg C m−3 h−1). Statistical analysis indicated that chlorophyll a concentration itself was not a significant factor that affected bacterial production, in contrast to its decomposition product, pheophytin, originating from senescent algal cells or herbivorous activity of zooplankton. Single and multiple regression analysis revealed that water temperature, dissolved organic carbon (DOC), and pheophytin concentration were the main factors affecting bacterial production in both fjords.

Introduction. There are reports in literature which indicate the connection between impacted third molars and occurrence of symptoms of craniomandibular dysfunctions and headaches. Objectives. The aim of this study was evaluation of the outcome of patients who reported specific symptoms of craniomandibular dysfunction and had impacted mandibular third molars. Materials and method. The research material consisted of 10 women who reported to the Department of Craniomandibular Disfunctions of the Medical University in Lublin, Poland, with pain and acoustic symptoms in the Temporomandibular joint (TMJ) area. During preliminary therapy, the patients used a silicone occlusal device; ionotherapy was ordered and the patients were recommended to eliminate parafunctions. Results. Clicks before treatments were present in 6 patients, after treatment with silicone occlusal device and ionotherapy with Profenid gel in 5 patients, while two years after extraction of the impacted teeth the clicks were no longer present, and differences in the presence of clicks analyses by means of the Q-Cochran test were statistically significant between examinations 1m vs.3 (Q=10.33; p<0.01) and examinations 2 vs.3 (Q=8.40; p<0.05). Conclusions. The study showed that extraction of the mandibular third molars can cause regression of some symptoms of craniomandibular disorders.

The purpose of the study was the in vivo diagnosing of E. cuniculi invasions in pet rabbits with neurological symptoms using the Real-Time PCR, and determination of the rate of invasion, in this group of animals. The study involved 103 pet rabbits with neurological symptoms. Parasitic invasions were diagnosed using Real-Time PCR. The DNA of the parasites for molecular tests was isolated from the urine of the diseased animals. Out of the 103 tested DNA samples, the presence of the E. cuniculi genetic material was detected in 27 samples (26.21%). The melting temperature (Tm) of all products was 77.5℃. The presence of parasitic DNA in the urine of 26.21% of examined animals indicates that E. cuniculi infections occur widely in pet rabbits in Poland and are a significant cause of neurological disorders in those animals.

he authors present the case of a 17-year-old boy who suffered a cervical spinal injury as a result of the sharp bending of the head after slipping (without falling). After about 30 minutes, he began to feel tingling in the limbs and he developed tetraparesis. He went through physical rehabili-tation, psychological rehabilitation, occupational therapy, and periodic catheterization. Additionally, we introduced to him a low dose of analog granulocyte colony-stimulating factor (G-CSF). G-CSF 5 μg/kg was given subcutaneously daily for 5 days per month for 3 months, again after 6 months, and again after 10 months. The boy could sit indecently and walk with assistance. A significant increase in muscle strength in this patient with tetraplegia after 10 months of treatment may indicate beneficial effects of G-CSF in this disorder.

The onset of disease was noted at 12 years of age. The physical examination noted general muscle atrophy more pronounced at left side of the body. He was able to walk 300 meters within 6 minute walk test. Granulocyte colony-stimulating factor 5 μg/kg was given subcutaneously daily for 5 days/month for 1, 2, 3, 6 and 12 months. Clinical examination, laboratory tests including blood, biochemical tests, and CD34+ cells were performed. A significant increase of muscle strength in the lower and upper limbs between baseline, and after 3 months of treatment, after 6, and after 12 months was found. He was able to walk 480 meters within 6 minutes after 12 months. Electromyography demonstrated increase of amplitude in the examined in upper and lower limbs after six months compared to baseline. Leukocyte levels remained below 25000/μL. CD34+ increased significantly at day 5 of granulocyte colony-stimulating factor admini-stration. It was safe and well tolerated by the patient. A significant increase in muscle strength in this patient with facioscapulohumeral dystrophy after 3 months of treatment, after 6, and after 12 months since the first treatment course was completed may indicate beneficial effects of granulocyte colony-stimulating factor in this disorder.

The plasma was diagnosed with temporal resolved interferometry and neutron diagnostics. The modified electrode configuration showed an increase of the current in the pinch phase and a decrease of the total neutron yield. The lower total neutron yield is caused by a lower energy of deuterons producing the observed neutrons and by a decrease of the velocity of transformations of the structures in the pinch column.

Opis:
Introduction: Recent reports have revealed that neuroinflammation and apoptosis in brains affected by cerebral palsy could be therapeutic targets. Granulocyte colony-stimulating factor (G-CSF) exerts anti-inflammatory and antiapoptosis effects and stimulates the proliferation of neural stem and progenitor cells in the brain. Purpose: To assess the efficacy and safety of G-CSF treatment in children and adolescents with CP. Materials and methods: Six patients with spastic tetraplegia CP aged 3-15 years were enrolled in this study. Five patients had GMFCS (Gross Motor Function Classification System) level at V, three children had epilepsy, and three had severe mental retardation. We used the gross motor function measure-66 (GMFM-66) to assess motor function.GCSF (5μg/kg/body/day) was administered subcutaneously for five consecutive days during the four months. The parents also evaluated the physical and mental development of their children. Results: We observed improvement in motor function in patients with CP on the GMFM-66 scale. Parents reported improvement in behavior, speech development, and a decrease in spasticity in children with CP. G-CSF therapy was well-tolerated. No side effects were observed during the study. Conclusions: Our preliminary report suggests that G-CSF treatment improves motor and mental function in patients with CP. Further studies are needed to confirm these observations
