Clay exhibits described as firedogs or fire wolves are found all over Europe in the area of influence of the Jastorf and Poieneşti-Lukaševka cultures from the pre-Roman period. Firedogs are found/identified more and more often on the territory of Poland. This paper offers a catalogue of all the 22 finds identified so far. The analysis of decorative motifs found on fire wolves unearthed in Poland indicates greater connections with the Jastorf culture from the Jutland area.

Tympanostomy tube insertion and tympanic membrane incision are two the most frequently performed surgical procedures in otolaryngology, especially in children. The tympanic membrane incision - paracentesis, or myringotomy – is an incision of the tympanic membrane for diagnostic purposes or to allow drainage of pathological secretion from the tympanic cavity. Tympanostomy tube insertion involves incision made in the tympanic membrane and insertion of a ventilation tube (various types and for various periods of time) to improve hearing and aeration of the tympanic cavity. Procedures are performed through the ear canal (transcanal approach), under local or general anesthesia. Complications may occur in some cases of paracentesis and tympanostomy tube insertion.

CRS symptoms in children can be mild and uncharacteristic. The disease is multifactorial, and therefore requires a multifaceted, multidisciplinary approach. Treatment of CRS in children is difficult, infections often recur, and treatment methods are often ineffective. In children, surgery is performed infrequently, only when other therapies have failed. The first stage of surgery is adenoidectomy. Functional endoscopic surgery of the paranasal sinuses may be considered if no improvement of the patient after exhausting all possibilities of conservative treatment.

Opis:
Introduction: Social perception of disability is often a more serious problem than the disability itself. Acceptance of people with disabilities by the social environment is crucial, as it promotes their all-round development better than measures taken in individual rehabilitation. The aim of the study was to analyze the perception of people with intellectual disabilities by residents of the Tarnów region. Material and methods: The study was conducted by a diagnostic survey method using the author's survey questionnaire in March-May 2023. 314 correctly completed questionnaires were included in the study, completed by people between 18 and 67 years of age (mean 25.97 ± 7.97 years). A significance level of p < 0.05 was adopted. Results: As many as 32.48% (n = 102) of the respondents admit that they have a person with intellectual disabilities in their family or neighborhood. Among the respondents, 54.14% are familiar with local organizations for people with intellectual disabilities and their families, where 17.20% of people admitted that they have done volunteer work for such an organization. A willingness to become a volunteer for such an organization was expressed by 44.90% of people. Respondents overwhelmingly agreed that people with intellectual disabilities should participate in the life of the local community (91.40%). The majority of respondents (79.62%) believe that intellectually disabled people have the same sexual needs as the rest of society, followed by 15.61% who say they have no sexual needs, and 2.87% associate the sexual needs of intellectually disabled people with their degree and type of disability. Conclusions: Society shows signs of effortless tolerance – it does not want to have closer relations with people with intellectual disabilities, but at the same time does not mind that such people participate in society. Respondents show insufficient knowledge of the sexuality of people with intellectual disabilities.

Introduction: The coronavirus pandemic has shed a whole new light on telehealth, which has become an alternative for diagnosis, monitoring, treatment and support without physical contact between patient and healthcare professional. The aim of this study was to examine patient satisfaction with medical services provided with tele-advice during the Covid-19 pandemic.Material and methods: The study was conducted using our own questionnaire via Google Form that was correctly completed by 133 individuals between the ages of 18 and 76 years (mean 33.1 ± 13.1 years) who received medical services via tele-advice.Results: Patients with chronic conditions were statistically more likely to seek specialist services via tele-advice (p = 0.003). Slightly less than one-third of respondents (n = 39; 29.3%) were asked during the tele-advice to attend the clinic / office in person to complete the visit with a physical examination. The vast majority of subjects (n = 95; 71.4%) responded that their health status had not changed since the pandemic and the introduction of tele-advice. Nearly half (n = 64; 48.1%) believed that their health problem had been solved via tele-advice. Only 4.5% of the respondents (n = 6) strongly agreed with the statement that “tele-advice enables proper diagnosis and matching of effective treatment”, 18.0% (n = 24) tended to agree. The vast majority of respondents believed that everyone should be able to choose between tele-advice and a traditional medical visit (n = 121; 91.0%).Conclusions: The majority of people surveyed did not perceive a difference in their health since the pandemic and the introduction of tele-advice. Nearly half of respondents believed that their health problem had been resolved with a telemedicine consultation, with even fewer people convinced that “tele-advice allows for proper diagnosis and matching of effective treatment.” Patients would mostly like to have a choice between tele-visit and in-person visits, with no clear indication of the superiority of one or the other. Continuous improvement of current solutions will certainly contribute to increased patient satisfaction with the medical services provided.

Bacterial lysates stimulate the general immunity of the body in a non-specific way. They act on non-specific defense mechanisms, leading to an increase in type A antibody in mucous membranes, phagocytic activity and INF-ƴ production. They can also stimulate the production of specific antibodies against the bacterial antigens that make up the preparation. The oral immunomodulatory preparations with the best documented clinical efficacy available on the Polish market are Ismigen, Broncho-Vaxom, Ribomunyl and Luivac. They are all lysates of bacterial strains that most often cause respiratory tract infections. In many clinical trials, oral bacterial lysates have been shown to minimize the risk of recurrent respiratory infections in children and adults and reduce the need for antibiotics.

Introduction: Despite years of research and scientific work, it has not yet been possible to produce such a valuable medication as blood. The pandemic does not reduce the need for blood, quite the opposite. However, due to the pandemic, the number of blood donors has dropped dramatically across the country. The aim of the study was to find out the opinions and attitudes of the respondents towards blood donation during the pandemic period and to assess their knowledge of the principles related to safe blood donation during this period.Material and methods: The study was conducted using a diagnostic survey method and the tool was our own research questionnaire. The study was conducted in February 2021, using Google Forms platform. In total, data were collected from 150 individuals (females: 60.6%, males 39.4%) aged between 16 and 73 years (mean 31.4 ± 12.4 years). Statistical analyses used a significance level of p = 0.05.Results: Nearly 39.7% of the respondents were regular blood donors, 12% of the respondents donated blood several times (12.3%). Blood was donated more often by men, people aged over 30 years, urban residents, and people with higher education (p < 0.001). Most people continued to donate blood despite the COVID-19 pandemic (49.7%). Respondents who have donated blood so far still mostly want to donate blood after the pandemic (90%), among those who have not done so 38% want to do so after the pandemic (p < 0.001). The vast majority of respondents believed it was safe to donate blood during the pandemic (93%), and most were aware that symptoms of infection disqualify a blood donor (83.2%). Only 43.2% knew that “Convalescents who donate plasma are entitled to a blood donation deduction”.Conclusions: The current pandemic situation is not an obstacle to donating blood. Blood donations should not be withheld unless there are health contraindications. Due to additional procedures, it is still safe to donate blood. Efforts to promote blood donation during the COVID-19 pandemic should be continued.

Introduction: The coronavirus pandemic has changed daily lives. These changes affect many aspects of lives including periodic health examinations. Specialists warn that in the era of the pandemic people abandon examinations. This is a very dangerous phenomenon, which can negatively affect health and general well-being. The aim of this study was to determine the frequency of periodic health examinations during the pandemic period including the use of telephone advice services.Material and methods: The study was carried out in March 2021 among 147 people (120 women and 27 men), in the age range of 18-76 years. The study was carried out by the method of diagnostic survey, with the use of questionnaire technique (authors’ questionnaire). Questions included knowledge of prevention, frequency of periodic health examinations, and health services received by the respondents during the pandemic. Analysis of the survey results provided information on current health problems, time of diagnosis, and course of treatment to date. Results: During the pandemic, the majority of respondents had the opportunity to use a telephone advice, with women more likely to use the telephone advice than men (64.2% vs. 37.0%; p = 0.010). 36.9% of the respondents were satisfied with the service. The main reasons for dissatisfaction with the telephone advice included: inability to examine (33.3%), short telephone advice time (24.2%), misdiagnosis or ineffective treatment (21.2%), long waiting time, difficult contact with the facility (15.2%). Among telephone advice users, 39.1% had chronic diseases; among non- telephone advice users, the percentage was lower at 18.3%. Telephone advice users were significantly less likely to say they did not have periodic health examinations or did not remember when they had them done compared to non- telephone advice users (p = 0.019).Conclusions: During the pandemic, the majority of respondents had the opportunity to use telephone advice. Only 1/3 were satisfied with the telephone advice, and the main reasons for dissatisfaction were as follows: inability to examine, short telephone advice time, misdiagnosis or ineffective treatment. Telephone advice users were significantly less likely to say they did not have periodic examinations or could not remember when they had them done compared to non-telephone advice users.

Allergic rhinitis (AR) is the most common form of allergy, which - as epidemiological research has shown - applies to nearly 25% of the population. AR significantly affects the quality of life of the patient, and the more severe the disease, the greater the risk of developing bronchial asthma. One of the factors affecting the severity of symptoms and the degree of their control is air pollution. In some patients, despite proper treatment, persistence or only partial remission of symptoms (uncontrolled allergic rhinitis) is observed. This can lead to an increase in comorbidities - inflammation of the paranasal sinuses, otitis media and asthma - both in children and in adults. The treatment of allergic rhinitis, in accordance with the standards, consists in: education of the patient, elimination of the allergen from the environment and factors intensifying the course of the disease, selection of proper pharmacotherapy and specific allergen immunotherapy. Many factors influence the selection of the antihistamine used, e.g., the opportunity of safe increase of the dosage.

Objective. A tropism to epithelial cells and lymphocytes, an inhibition of apoptosis in host cells, an ability to occurrence in persistent form resistant to antibiotic treatment are the features of Chlamydia pneumoniae, which can have connection with chronic inflammation of an adenoid tissue and adenoid hypertrophy. This study aimed to (1) detect the C. pneumoniae in an adenoid in children undergoing adenoidectomy, (2) estimate a connection between C. pneumoniae occurrence and the size of adenoid, (3) demonstration in which of adenoid cells C. pneumoniae occurs most often. Material and methods. The examined group consisted of 200 children aged from 2 to 16 years (mean age 6,4) undergoing adenoidectomy. In all children during qualification for adenoidectomy a fiberoscopic examination of the nasopharynx was performed. A part of removed adenoid tissue was analysed by real-time PCR for C. pneumoniae. Adenoids from children with positive PCR examination and from 10 children with negative PCR examination were examined using immunohistochemistry (IHC). Results. C. pneumoniae in the adenoid was present in 5,5% children. Positive results were obtained most frequently (24,14%, 7/29) in the eldest group (10-16 years). A statistical analysis demonstrated the correlation between C. pneumoniae occurrence in an adenoid tissue and the size of adenoid. In immunohistochemistry C. pneumoniae was found the most frequently in lymphocytes and in epithelial cells. Conclusions. A presence of C. pneumoniae in lymphocytes and epithelial cells of the adenoid first of all in older children with adenoid hypertrophy confirms the participation of this bacteria in adenoid pathology.

Opis:
The aim of this study was to examine the impact of spontaneous succession in comparison with black fallow on selected physical properties of soil damaged by mining in the area of internal dumping ground Pątnów near Konin. To evaluate the soil physical status, basic physical and chemical parameters (total organic carbon, bulk and particle density, pH), water characteristic curves, and water and air permeability were measured. The observed water retention data with the saturated hydraulic conductivity value were fitted to obtain soil water characteristic curves, differential porosity plots, and hydraulic conductivity function in the vadose zone. Over 30 years of spontaneous succession treatment of the post-mining grounds enriched the resulting Technosol in organic carbon 4 times more than the black fallow treatment. Vegetation caused a high belowground input of organic material, which was apparent by very low bulk density and very high porosity values. Spontaneous succession changed the typical differential porosity of a sandy soil mostly in the mesopore region. Soils under both treatments were characterised by excessive field air capacity, but the soil under spontaneous vegetation revealed higher volume of water available for plants in comparison to the black fallow soil, despite its coarser texture. The black fallow soil had lower and more variable air and water permeabilities than the soil under spontaneous succession. Vegetation including plants with extensive root systems positively influenced soil physical state, thereby improving soil ecosystem stability.
Na podstawie pojemności wodnych i współczynnika filtracji wyznaczono krzywe potencjału wody glebowej – wilgotność, porowatości dyferencjalne i funkcję przewodnictwa wodnego w strefie nienasyconej.

All patients underwent neurological, ophtalmological and neuroimaging examinations. Results: In 60 (56.1%) children IgG and/or IgM Borrelia antibodies were positive in serum and/or CSF. Only in 2/60 (3.3%) Borrelia burgdorferi DNA was found in CSF with specific antibodies detected in serum and CSF – (LNB – aseptic meningitis with TIA and nerve II and VI neuritis cases). LNB was diagnosed in 33 patients and in 22/107(20.5%) demyelinating diseases. IgG in CSF, Western blot test results were significantly higher in children with LNB – IgG p (chi2 >9.333) =0.0023, WB- p (chi2>12.941)=0.0003. Conclusions: Detection of DNA Borrelia burgdorferi in CSF using RT-PCR method might be helpful for confirmation of early LNB diagnosis. Negative results for DNA Borrelia burgdorferi in CSF are especially important for exclusion of LNB and useful for establishment of demyelinating diseases diagnosis. Four-week intravenous Ceftriaxone course is sufficient for LNB neuroinfection treatment, elimination of DNA Borrelia burgdorferi from CSF and clinical improvement of patients.
Cel: Zastosowanie metody RT-PCR dla wykrywania DNA Borrelia burgdorferi w płynie mózgowo-rdzeniowym u pacjentów pediatrycznych z różnymi objawami neurologicznymi i podejrzeniem choroby z Lyme. Materiał i metody: Badanie prospektywne przeprowadzono u 107 dzieci w wieku od 1–18 lat (średnio 12.2 lat). Badania serologiczne we krwi przeprowadzano dwuetapowo – test ELISA, a następnie test Western blot. U wszystkich pacjentów wykonywano badania neurologiczne, okulistyczne i neuroobrazowe. LNB zdiagnozowano u 33 pacjentów a u 22/107 (20.5%) rozpoznano choroby demielinizacyjne. U dzieci z LNB stwierdzono statystycznie znamiennie wyższe miana IgG w PMRDz i wyniki testu Western blot – IgG p (chi2 >9.333)=0.0023, WB- p (chi2>12.941)=0.0003.
