Opis:
The aim of this study is to present the special features and properties of the two alloys of similar average chemical composition Ni₅₅Fe₂₀Cu₅P₁₀B₁₀, processed through two different routes. The first alloy was melt-spun after the ejection of homogeneous liquid using a traditional single chamber crucible, and the second alloy was ejected from a double chamber crucible as two separate liquids: i.e., Ni₄₀Fe₄₀B₂₀ and Ni₇₀Cu₁₀P₂₀, mixing only at the orifice area. The studies of the microstructure of the composite alloy were performed through the use of transmission electron microscopy and scanning electron microscopy. The Ni₅₅Fe₂₀Cu₅P₁₀B₁₀ two-chamber melt-spun (TCMS) alloy, as well as the homogeneous Ni₅₅Fe₂₀Cu₅P₁₀B₁₀, Ni₄₀Fe₄₀B₂₀, and Ni₇₀Cu₁₀P₂₀ alloys, were heated to elevated temperatures and their characteristics studied by means of differential scanning calorimetry. The temperature resistivity change method was applied to the examination of the Ni₅₅Fe₂₀Cu₅P₁₀B₁₀ TCMS alloy. The phase composition after heat treatment was investigated using X-ray diffraction. The results of the microstructure examination show that the TCMS alloy is an amorphous/amorphous composite, and is notable for its Ni-Fe-B and Ni-Cu-P stripes resulting from its differentiated chemical composition. Another unique feature of the TCMS alloy is that it retains its wood-like morphology even after high-temperature heat treatment. The crystallisation of the TCMS alloy starts from the Ni-Cu-P constituent and ends with the Ni-Fe-B areas of the sample. The results are discussed on the basis of previous work completed on amorphous matrix composites.

The diffuse neutron scattering in the $Mn_{0.4}Cu_{0.6}$ alloy was measured in the temperature range 15-390K at the 3-axis neutron spectrometer at MARIA reactor in Świerk. The broad maxima of the neutron intensity were observed in the surrounding of the (0.5, 1, 0) reciprocal lattice point and other symmetry related points. The effect is similar to that observed in Mn-Cu alloys with lower Mn content at room temperature. Our results are in agreement with the earlier finding that the maxima of the short-range order incommensurate spin density wave scattering are placed at the (0.5±δ, 1, 0) reciprocal lattice point with a linear dependence of δ on the Mn concentration. In addition, some commensurate antiferromagnetic short-range order was found.

Opis:
We have confirmed the significant anisotropy of the generalised magnetic susceptibility in the paramagnetic and antiferromagnetic phase of the fcc Mn-Ni alloys. In this paper the detailed account of the experiments performed on the $Mn_{0.71}Ni_{0.29}$ alloy is given. Our main result for the paramagnetic phase is that the correlation length is larger for the direction parallel to the anisotropy axis than for the perpendicular one by a factor of 1.6. The spin-wave velocity observed at 15 K is higher for the direction parallel to the anisotropy axis than that for the perpendicular direction by a factor of 1.2. These results are similar to that for the $Mn_{0.62}Ni_{0.38}$ alloy. Our results indicate that the magnetic carriers are more localized and the magnetic interactions are less extended in alloys with higher Ni concentration.

Opis:
Introduction: There are studies, which prove a positive influence of biological drugs on effects of medical therapy but there are few of them, which focus on aspects of quality of life and coping with stress. Purpose: To assess quality of life (QoL) and methods of coping with stress depending on the used form of therapy of rheumatoid arthritis (RA) treatment. Materials and methods: Comparative analysis included 64 patients: I group B – treated with the method of biological agents; II group T - treated according to rheumatologic standards. The study used: Short Form 36 (SF–36)- general questionnaire use for assessment QoL, HAQ (Health Assessment Questionnaire) scale of functional efficiency, Mini-COPE inventory for coping with stress. Results: Assessment of QoL with the use of the SF-36 questionnaire showed low QoL of patients in both groups. Higher QoL was observed in group B in all domains except PF domain where group T got a higher score. Analysis of QoL within total physical and mental health assessment also indicated higher QoL of patients from group B relatively PCS (39.8% vs. 33.5%) and MCS (56.9% vs. 40.9%; p<0.001). Analysis of coping with stress showed that the most common strategies of coping with stress in group B are positive: sense of humour (1.06 vs. 0.61; p=0.008) and planning (1.95 vs. 1.81), positive redefinition (1.59 vs. 1.48), acceptance (2.00 vs. 1.95). Whereas among patients in group T the strategy ‘turn to religion’ prevails (1.44 vs. 0.91; p=0.014). Conclusions: Biological agents favourably affect assessment of QoL and a degree of functional disability in patients with significant intensification of the disease symptoms. In patients treated with biological drugs using positive strategies of coping with stress, and difficult situation is observed. Patients treated with biological drugs show better satisfaction from treatment and fewer unfavourable symptoms resulting from the used therapy.

Opis:
Extensive use of pesticides in agriculture can lead to contamination of fruit harvests and an increased risk of toxic effects on humans. A total of 123 fruit samples harvested in 2012 in the north-eastern region of Poland were analysed for pesticide residues as part of the national monitoring programme, and as part of research commissioned by private customers. Pesticide residues were found in 64.2% of the samples. There were pesticide residues below the maximum residue level (MRL) in 63 (51.2%) of the samples, while 16 (13%) exceeded MRLs set by Regulation (EC) 396/2005. The gooseberry, currant, and strawberry samples showed the most contamination. The most frequently detected pesticides were dithiocarbamates (54) followed by difenoconazole (22), boscalid (17), and alpha-cypermethrin (15). More than half of analysed samples had multiple residues (up to 8 residues), with multiple residues most common in gooseberry and currant samples. This study shows cases of non-authorised pesticide use by farmers who are trying to protect certain fruit.

Opis:
Food safety is very important for consumers. Fruits, vegetables and cereals are not only the major source of vitamins, minerals, fibre and energy, but can also be a source of many pollutants posing health hazards. Pesticides found in food are just examples of harmful substances affecting food safety. The objective of this paper was to assess short-term health risks assessment based on the concentration of pesticide residues found in agricultural products collected from national food control systems during the period 2005–2013 at the Official Pesticide Residue Laboratory in Bialystok in frame of RASFF (Rapid Alert System for Food and Feed) system. During nine-year testing, totally 2021 fruits, vegetables and cereals were sampled from the north-eastern and central part of Poland and analyzed by gas and liquid chromatography and spectroscopic technique for the presence of 188 active substances of pesticides. Contaminations were not detected in 65.3 % of samples, 31.9 % samples contained residues below the maximum residue levels (MRLs), while 2.8 % of tested samples exceeded MRLs. Among 81 RASFF notifications noted, the greatest number of irregularities concerned exceeding the values of MRL – 41, in 27 cases it was found that a pesticide was not used in accordance with the registration of plant protection product. The highest estimated values for short-term exposure were obtained for plum for the dimethoate, and in the group of toddlers it was 94.6 % ARfD (Acute Reference Dose), and in the adult group it was 23.3 % ARfD.
W dziewięcioletnim okresie badań łącznie 2021 próbek owoców, warzyw i zbóż pobrano z północno-wschodniej i środkowej części Polski i analizowano pod kątem obecności 188 substancji czynnych pestycydów techniką chromatografii gazowej, cieczowej i spektrofotometryczną.

Opis:
The proposed research outlines a serious common concern of Salmonella resistance to antimicrobials following prolonged exposure to the disinfectants (biocides). These phenotypes of bacteria could potentially result in hard to treat infections. Typical for avian sources, biocide sensitive S. enterica subsp. enterica serovars: Typhimurium, Enteritidis, Virchow and Zanzibar and their isogenic biocide-tolerant variants were studied in order to investigate bacteriostatic effect of two commercially available biocide formulations: potassium peroxymonosulfate (P) and dodecylamine based structure (triamine, D). We found that cultivating of the bacteria in the medium supplemented with a blend containing P did not influence their antibiotic susceptibility pattern. In contrast, tolerance of bacteria to D compound resulted in resistance to co-trimoxazole, cefotaxime and ciprofloxacin of which two cefotaxime and ciprofloxacin are used commonly for the treatment of invasive Salmonella infections in humans. The dependency between OMP patterns and the level of Salmonella survival in media containing the biocides was observed merely in serovar Typhimurium. In conclusion, these results suggest that Salmonella strains challenged by prolonged treatment with the disinfectants become resistant to antibiotics, however it depends on Salmonella serovar and the chemical used. This paper also highlights the loop-mediated isothermal amplification (LAMP) as a technique that offers great benefits to microbiological detecting of Salmonella species in the samples.

This paper summarises current knowledge of goods and services in the Polish Exclusive Economic Zone of the Baltic Sea ecosystem. It reviews specific properties of the Baltic that could be used for economic valuation. Goods and services range from the familiar resources of fish and minerals, which were valued with the Productivity Method, to less obvious services provided by the ecosystem such as biofiltration in coastal sands, valued with either the Replacement Cost or Damage Cost Avoided methods. Disservices to the marine ecosystem are also considered, e.g. erosion and coastal flooding, including the costs of planned mitigating measures. This paper emphasises the importance of using valuation methods to help make better-educated decisions for the sustainability of the Baltic Sea.
