Opis:
Temperature change is one of key factors which should be taken into account in logistics during transportation or storage of many types of goods. In this study, a passive UHF RFID-enabled sensor system for elevated temperature (above 58°C) detection has been demonstrated. This system consists of an RFID reader and disposable temperature sensor comprising an UHF antenna, chip and temperature sensitive unit. The UHF antenna was designed and simulated in an IE3D software. The properties of the system were examined depending on the temperature level, type of package which contains the studied objects and the type of antenna substrate.

Opis:
Phyllites from the Dewon-Pokrzywna deposit in the Opava Mts., SW Poland, were investigated by XRD (Rietveld method), XRF, EPMA, SEM, and ATR-FTIR from the perspective of their potential usage as a buffer and/or backfill material in a geological repository of radioactive waste. Organic matter dispersed in the phyllite matrix was analysed by GC-MS. Fine-grained Mg-Fe-muscovite (13 to 29 wt.%), Fe-ripidolite (10 to 25 wt.%), detrital quartz (20 to 46 wt.%), and albite (7 to 28 wt.%) ± microcline, illite or illite/smectite, and kaolinite are major minerals in phyllite samples. The chlorite/muscovite ratio ranges from 0.65 to 1.1. Mg-annite inherited from the precursor rock is a minor constituent. Detrital ilmenite is a dominant accessory mineral. Ancylite-(Ce) occurs in quartz-calcite-ripidolite veins. Two types of phyllite have been distinguished based on the proportion of phyllosilicates to silt fraction: argillaceous (47 to 55 wt.% phyllosilicates) and silt-rich (28 wt.% phyllosilicates). Argillaceous phyllite shows elevated content of alumina and moderate concentration of silica. It is highly enriched in Fe compared to phyllites from other localities worldwide. The BET specific surface area of argillaceous phyllite ranges from 1.73 to 3.64 m2/g. Whole-rock chemical composition, mineral assemblages, chlorite geothermometry, and the occurrence of aliphatic hydrocarbons suggest that argillaceous phyllite originated from a pelagic pelite protolith under low-temperature (260-370°C) greenschist to subgreenschist facies conditions. Persistent biomarkers are indicative of bacterial degradation of planktonic organic matter suspended in a high water column. Enrichment in Fe-rich chlorite and Mg,Fe-muscovite, low volume of interconnected pores with dominant mesopores suggest that argillaceous phyllite from the Dewon-Pokrzywna deposit is a potential candidate for a buffer and/or backfill material.

Opis:
Determining thermal properties and morphology seems to be useful in the analysis of release and degradation processes form polymeric materials. Risperidone is available in the formulation of a long-acting injection based on poly(D,L-lactide-co-glycolide). Currently, alternative solutions are also offered, i.e., nano- and microparticles or implants, including copolymers of lactide and glycolide. The effect of risperidone content on the properties of poly(L-lactide-co-glycolide) matrices was determined. The study also involved an assessment of the changes during degradation. Risperidone free matrices and the matrices with risperidone were obtained by solvent casting. Thermal characteristics were tested by means of differential scanning calorimetry, and the morphology was evaluated using a scanning electron microscope. Risperidone did not change significantly semi-crystalline structure of poly(L-lactide-co-glycolide) matrices. The decrease in crystallization temperature and glass transition temperature during degradation was observed. Many pores and their deformation, the widening of pore area, cracks and slits because of degradation were observed. The analysis of thermal properties and morphology allowed us to explain degradation process. Matrices exhibited stable process of degradation, which may be advantageous for development of prolonged risperidone release systems.

Opis:
In spite of recent advances in treatment protocols, tendinopathies continue to challenge orthopaedists and surgeons. Due to the complexity of both tendon injuries and the healing processes, animal models are essential for addressing fundamental questions in tendinopathy research. Diagnostic imaging could contribute to the evaluation of animal models, thus providing information, which could be translated to human tendinopathies. The objective of our study was to evaluate in situ appearance of the rabbit common calcanean tendon with ultrasonography and magnetic resonance imaging. Additionally, we sought to assess and compare the feasibility and usefulness of these techniques in a rabbit model while focusing on the imaging of the particular structures involved in calcaneal tendon disorders. Eight California rabbits were used for post-mortem sonographic and low-field magnetic resonance examination. Morphometry was performed on longitudinal sonograms and sagittal MRI scans. The craniocaudal diameter of the tendon was measured at four points of interest. Ultrasonography and magnetic resonance provided good visualisation of the tendon origin, the paratenon and the pre-Achilles fat pad. Magnetic resonance images presented in more detail the structure of the calcaneal insertion. Both modalities failed to visualise the individual components of the common calcanean tendon and the bursa of the calcaneal tendon. Statistical analysis of measurements obtained showed that the craniocaudal diameter of the common calcanean tendon in a rabbit increases significantly with a growing length from the calcaneal tuber. Both magnetic resonance and ultrasonography are feasible, and should be considered complementary, not alternative imaging techniques in a rabbit common calcanean tendon model.
