Opis:
The article presents a definition of circadian radiation and its influence on human beings. Typical sources of this radiation have been discussed and compared. As the availability of devices designed for circadian radiation measurement is very limited, and their quality is rather poor, there is a need for the development of a new meter which would deliver precise data. The paper presents available methods of optical radiation measurement which can be used in a circadian radiation assessment. Advantages and disadvantages of presented methods have been discussed. A light path in typical measurement instruments has been analyzed, as well as the impact of each component on the final result (i.e. the influence of spatial correction, optical filters and detectors). Original results of authors’ research have been presented and the concept for decreasing the measurement error has been proposed.

A higher sensitivity and the cytotoxic effects of garlic have been previously reported on culture cells. No studies, however, have investigated the developmental toxicity of fresh garlic in zebrafish model. In this study freshly made garlic juice, which chemically is a combination of sulphur containing compounds, was evaluated to investigate the developmental toxicity during a 5-day assay using zebrafish embryos, starting from 2 h post fertilization. The results showed that toxicity endpoints such as the hatching rate, survival rate, malformation rate and growth rate had a significant dose-response relationship with increasing concentrations of garlic juice. The average hatching rate and time to hatch of zebrafish exposed to lower concentrations (0.001% and less) were significantly increased around 48-60 h of treatment (P < 0.05), strongly emphasizing the acceleration of hatchability caused by garlic juice. Mortality was also increased with exposure to garlic, exhibiting the maximal toxicity after 12 h of exposure to the concentration of 0.08%. A significant reduction in the heart rate by 35.5% was recorded due to the higher concentrations of juice (above 0.01%) starting form 36-hour exposure (P < 0.05). Growth retardation, pericardial oedema with heart malformations, deformity of yolk, lack of pigmentation and body malformation have been noticed at the concentration of 0.03% starting from 48 h of exposure. No severe malformations in any of the experimental zebrafish were produced at concentrations less than 0.01% of garlic juice. The results indicate that developing zebrafish are sensitive to garlic juice and further studies are required to investigate the molecular basis of the observed effects that garlic constituents exert upon aquatic vertebrates.

Opis:
Developmental abnormalities due to fresh garlic (Allium sativum L.) juice exposure have been previously reported on zebrafish (Danio rerio) embryos. Freshly made garlic juice (FGJ) containing allicin as a main ingredient and aged garlic extract (AGE) containing mainly S-allyl-L-cysteine were evaluated to investigate the lethality during a 5-day assay using zebrafish embryos, starting from 2 hours post fertilization (hpf), in a static system at an garlic concentration range of 0.00001-0.1%. In addition, lethality comparison between embryos and 3 days of post fertilization (dpf) larvae was performed. The results indicate that the mortality rate is positively correlated to the concentration of FGJ. Lethal concentration for the 24-h LC20 and 24-h LC50 in zebrafish embryos exposure was determined as 0.034% and 0.021%. The corresponding values for larval forms were significantly higher, 0.081% and 0.073% (P < 0.01), suggesting a greater sensitivity of developing embryos to FGJ treatment, as well as no protection from an embryo’s chorion. Below the FGJ concentrations of 0.02% (for embryos) and 0.06% (for larvae), no increase in mortality was observed over the entire exposure time. The mortality of AGE-treated embryos did not differ significantly (P = 0.571) from the control regardless of exposure duration and AGE concentration. The overall results indicate that zebrafish embryos constitute a reliable model for testing the developmental toxicity of garlic, and that different types of garlic preparations have different pharmacologic properties.

The problems of turbofan engines development is briefly discussed in the beginning. Next the conception of turbofan engine with two combustors is presented, and an engine thermodynamic cycle is analysed. The proposed engine it is a modification of the contemporary turbofan engine by addition of another combustor. First one is classical combustor located between high pressure compressor and turbine. Second one is located between high pressure turbine and low pressure turbine. This conception allows to lower the high pressure turbine inlet temperature. The second combustor increases energy of gasses inflow the low pressure turbine to the sufficient level for fan drive. The results of numerical analysis are used to show performance of the proposed engine and to present their advantages with compare to the classical turbofan engine construction. Then some other positive aspects of two combustors engine are discussed. It refers to possibilities of pollution emission reduction and overhauling period increasing and engine life time extension. On the other hand some aspects of engine hot elements (turbine) production simplification and cost reduction is analysed. In the next chapter the problems of the proposed engine technical realization are discussed. The summary and conclusions are presented in the last part of article.

Opis:
Crack width measurement is an important element of research on the progress of self-healing cement composites. Due to the nature of this research, the method of measuring the width of cracks and their changes over time must meet specific requirements. The article presents a novel method of measuring crack width based on images from a scanner with an optical resolution of 6400 dpi, subject to initial image processing in the ImageJ development environment and further processing and analysis of results. After registering a series of images of the cracks at different times using SIFT conversion (Scale-Invariant Feature Transform), a dense network of line segments is created in all images, intersecting the cracks perpendicular to the local axes. Along these line segments, brightness profiles are extracted, which are the basis for determination of crack width. The distribution and rotation of the line of intersection in a regular layout, automation of transformations, management of images and profiles of brightness, and data analysis to determine the width of cracks and their changes over time are made automatically by own code in the ImageJ and VBA environment. The article describes the method, tests on its properties, sources of measurement uncertainty. It also presents an example of application of the method in research on autogenous self-healing of concrete, specifically the ability to reduce a sample crack width and its full closure within 28 days of the self-healing process.

Opis:
Steel structures for a conveyance guiding system are subjected to prolonged, intense corrosion during their operation leading to a considerable loss of material and structure capacity reduction. Shaft guides are made of closed profiles welded from hotrolled channel sections. These profiles are categorized as class 1 cross-sections according to Eurocode 3, which means that they are resistant to local instability upon bending [1]. With an increase in the corrosion loss of the guides, the inertia moment of the crosssection is reduced. The resistance of profiles to local buckling is also reduced. However, calculations for local stability in guides upon bending are not required by the local Polish regulations on the operation of conveyance in shafts [2]. The question is whether this constitutes a shortcoming and risk for safe operation. Calculations according to steel construction standards [1] supported by numerical simulation were used to evaluate shaft steelwork guides resistance to buckling and their sensitivity to corrosion loss. It was shown that the guides of corrosion loss of 52-63%, depending on profile size, are prone to local buckling.

Recently, there has been an increasing need for secure, efficient, and simple notification methods for wireless systems. Such systems are meant to provide users with precise tools best suited for work or leisure environments, and a lot of effort has been put into creating a multitude of applications. At the same time, however, not much research has been made into determining which of the available protocols are best suited for each individual task. A number of basic notification methods are presented here, and tests have been performed for the most-promising ones. An attempt has been made to determine which of the methods have the best throughput, latency, security, and other characteristics. A comprehensive comparison is provided, which can be used to select the right method for each individual project. Finally, conclusions are provided, and the results from all of the tests conducted are discussed.

Opis:
Currently, there are more and more new materials (nanomaterials) proposed for biological and medical applications. They are, among other things, the effect of surface modification. One of the most frequently used techniques, fairly widespread, is plasmo-chemical method of diamond-like carbon (DLC) coating fabrication. There is many alterations of them, nevertheless all are characterized by short duration of the process and its economics. The final result does not require additional finishing treatments and the required coating properties can be controlled and obtained by selecting appropriate process parameters. Good mechanical and tribological properties, high corrosion resistance and its tolerance by biological systems have been documented in the literature. However, given the very wide range of applications of biomaterials found over time that the properties of carbon coatings are not always sufficient. The research conducting by scientific centres around the world have shown, however, that surface properties can be controlled by introducing specified elements into the DLC layer. Each of these added elements causes some properties change. Taking into consideration that we are dealing with biomaterials – the materials which are used in very harsh and demanding environment of a living organism, which also have a strong intra-individual variability, the solution in the form of material designed adequately to the needs of the individual patient is even more attractive and desirable. The DLC coatings doped by silver fulfilling constitute an innovative materials for biomedical application and are the subject of our investigations.

Opis:
Amyloidosis, a serious and widespread disease with a genetic background , manifests itself through the formation of dangerous fibrils in various organs. Apart from the polluted environment and an unhealthy lifestyle, genetic factors may accelerate this process leading in some cases to lethal damages to the body. Recently, a growing interest in amyloidogenic protein research has been observed. Transthyretin (TTR) is a tetrameric protein that transports thyroid hormone thyroxine and retinol binding protein in plasma and the cerebral fluid. Sometimes TTR breaks apart and forms fibrils. Several single point mutations, having de stabilizing impact on the TTR complex, are involved in the amyloidogenic TTR cascade. Problems with the TTR tetramer stability and conformational space characteristics of the protein have not been addressed computationally before. We present selected results of our molecular dynamics (MD, ∼ 2000ns) and steered MD simulations ( SMD ) of three variants of TTR : Wild Type ( WT ), V 30 M and L 55 P . SMD has been used to enforce the dissociation of TTR . Conformational spaces of WT TTR and its amyloidogenic variants have been investigated using a novel “ One Place One Conformation ” ( OPOC ) algorithm based on a graph technique called Petrinet (PN) formalism. While the PN approach alone does not permit a direct identification of protein regions with reduced stability, it gives quite a useful tool for an effective compari son of complex protein energy landscapes explored during classical and/or SMD steered molecular dynamics simulations.
