Opis:
We discuss a direct effect of the energy band splitting due to the antisymmetric spin-orbit coupling on the superconducting phase transition. Employing the square lattice tight-binding model we show a significant contribution of the spin-split energy band to the pair-breaking effect in the weak- and intermediate-coupling non-centrosymmetric superconductors. We establish a general tendency of the spin-orbit coupling to suppress the critical temperature of the spin singlet and triplet states. For the weak-coupling systems we report a possible development of sharp maxima of the critical temperature for the band fillings which support the spin-orbit coupling induced Fermi surface singularities of the density of states. We note that the initial suppression of the most stable triplet state becomes comparable to the suppression of other triplet states in the intermediate-coupling regime of superconductivity.

Opis:
Selenium deficiency is still a global problem in livestock husbandry, and this micronutrient is commonly supplemented in ruminants around the world, especially during the neonatal period. The aim of this study was to assess the influence of selenium and vitamin E supplementation in young goats in the neonatal period on the activity of the process of thrombopoiesis based on cytological evaluation of bone marrow smears. Twelve clinically healthy goats at the age of 2 days divided into two equal groups (n=6) participated in the study. Only animals from the experimental group received a single dose of Se and vitamin E on the second day of life. Bone marrow was collected three times (2nd day of life and after 15 and 25 days), stained with the MGG method, and subjected to cytological evaluation. Peripheral blood smears were also analyzed three times. The bone marrow cells in the group receiving the supplement absorbed dyes faster and more intensively than the same cells in the control animals. The numbers of megakaryoblasts and megakaryocytes were higher in goats from the experimental group than in the control group, which indicated the intensification of thrombopoiesis in animals supplemented with selenium and vitamin E. The results of the morphological tests clearly indicated an increase in the number of platelets and a higher platelet volume in experimental group. It can be concluded that selenium and vitamin E supplementation has a positive impact on the thrombopoiesis in caprine bone marrow.

Selenium is one of the most commonly supplemented microelements in ruminants because deficiency of this trace element is a global problem that can lead to several diseases, especially in young animals during the neonatal period. The number of erythroblasts was higher in goats from the experimental group than in the control group, which indicated the intensification of erythropoiesis in animals supplemented with selenium and vitamin E. The results of morphological tests clearly indicated an increase in the number of erythrocytes and a higher hemoglobin concentration in the group receiving selenium and vitamin E. Selenium and vitamin E supplementation has a positive impact on the erythropoiesis in bone marrow and can prevent neonatal anemia in goats.

Opis:
This study analyses tests influencing the selection of nonwovens for water absorbing geocomposites. The task of the nonwoven is to capture water infiltrating into the soil and to direct it to the superabsorbent located inside. The best results in the tests of water permeability (88 mm/s) and water absorption (1116.85 g/m2) were obtained for nonwoven of the lowest surface weight - 112.8 g/m2 and the largest average pore diameter - 206.5 μm. The lowest water absorption capacity (478.91 g/m2) and the smallest thickness changes under a load (19.3%) was noted in needle-punched nonwoven that had been subject to the calandering process. For one nonwoven, the presence of other significant fractions was noted, which proves that it is heterogeneous. For nonwovens applied in the unsaturated zone, not only water permeability should be taken into account, but also the size and fraction distribution of pores, in order to avoid breaking the continuity of capillaries.
W pracy przedstawiono badania właściwości włóknin, jako osłon do geokompozytów sorbujących wodę. Zadaniem włókniny jest przechwycenie filtrującej wody i przekazanie do znajdującego się wewnątrz superabsorbentu. Najlepsze wyniki w badaniu wodoprzepuszczalności (88 mm/s) i wodochłonności (1116.85 g/m2) uzyskano dla włókniny o najniższej masie powierzchniowej 112.8 g/m2 i największej średniej średnicy porów 206.5 μm.

Opis:
The aim of the study was to identify polymorphisms and mutations in the mitochondrial ND4 gene and to analyse the associations between the occurrence of molecular changes in mtDNA and phenotypic traits in tumours in German Shepherd dogs. Fifty samples obtained from blood and tumour tissues of German Shepherd dogs with diagnosed tumours were analysed. DNA extraction, amplification, and sequencing of the mtDNA ND4 gene, and bioinformatics, statistical, and in silico protein coding SNP analyses were performed. ND4 mutations and/or polymorphisms were noted in eleven nucleotide positions in nearly half of the examined dogs. All the changes were substitution mutations. A majority of the changes identified were homoplasmic. In one dog with osteosarcoma, blood heteroplasmy was detected. In two positions of the ND4 gene, presence of non-synonymous mutations leading to amino acid changes in the ND4 protein was reported. Analyses carried out to determine the deleterious effect of mutations indicated an almost 97 and 62% probability that a single amino acid substitution (p.G239V and p.I401T, respectively) in the protein has a negative impact on its function. The results of statistical analyses indicate a significant association between the occurrence of mutations in three loci of the ND4 gene and the location of tumours. The mutations identified may be a result of cell adaptation to the changes in the environment occurring during carcinogenesis. The high frequency of mutations in the tumours may indicate genetic instability of mtDNA, which may also play a role in carcinogenesis.
