    The reviewed book is devoted to the issue of smart specialization of Polish regions. Smart specialization are supposed to help to mobilize and fully use regions’ endogenous development potential. The book presents the process of identification of smart specializations and their typology. This publication may also play a role of feasibility study, since it provides many detailed information on regions’ development potential and plans for the future.
    Recenzowana książka poświęcona jest kwestii inteligentnych specjalizacji polskich regionów. Inteligentne specjalizacje mają sprzyjać uruchomieniu ich endogenicznego potencjału rozwojowego. W książce przedstawiono proces identyfikacji tych specjalizacji, ich typologię, oceniono ich realność w odniesieniu do posiadanego potencjału rozwojowego.

    Evidence-based policies require data and information on determinants, trends, and consequences of ongoing development processes. This data and information must be conveyed to policy makers. Thus a mechanism is needed to reach them and equip them with arguments for or against specific policy options. This mechanism is to be incorporated into the system of monitoring, analyzing, planning, and managing development processes. This article presents a brief outline of how the project “Development Trends of Mazovian Region” (DTMR) implemented in the years 2009-20014 related to regional policy formulation in terms of building an information base for diagnostic purposes, preparing instruments for modeling and scenario building, networking and lobbying for institutional arrangements that would foster cooperation among researchers and practitioners, both planners and policy makers. The DTRM project was co-financed by the European Union under the European Social Fund and managed by the Mazovian Office for Regional Planning.
    W artykule przedstawiono doświadczenia związane z projektem badawczym „Trendy rozwojowe Mazowsza’, realizowanym przez Mazowieckie Biuro Planowania Regionalnego w Warszawie w latach 2009-2014 oraz omówiono założenia projektu, hipotezy badawcze i organizację badań. Przedstawiono także w skrócie rezultaty diagnozy uwarunkowań i poziomu rozwoju regionu oraz stanu jego zagospodarowania przestrzennego przygotowanej na podstawie wyników badań. W artykule przedstawiono również wyniki weryfikacji hipotez badawczych oraz główne rekomendacje dotyczące działań mających na celu stymulowanie zrównoważonego rozwoju regionu oraz omówiono wykorzystanie wyników badań w przygotowaniu strategicznych dokumentów dotyczących rozwoju regionu: strategii rozwoju województwa, planu zagospodarowania przestrzennego i regionalnej strategii innowacji.

    One of the conditions for effective water resources management in protected areas is local decision makers' knowledge about potential threats caused by climate changes. Our study, conducted in the uNeSCO Biosphere Reserve of t uchola Forest in poland, analyses the perception of threats by local stakeholders. their assessments of the sensitivity of four lakes to the extreme weather events are compared with hydrological studies. the survey shows that the lakes' varying responses to extreme weather conditions is rarely noticed by ordinary observers. their perception is usually far from the hydrological facts, which indicates a lack of relevant information or a failure in making it widely accessible and understandable. moreover, it is rather the human impact, not climate change, which is seen as the biggest threat to the lakes. Insufficient environmental knowledge may hinder the effective protection and management of natural resources, due to bad decisions and lack of the local communities' support for adaptation and mitigation policies.

    The creative sector has become an important source used to create competitive advantages of the cities. The importance of creative industries in urban development was spotted more than a decade ago. Creative capital is perceived as an impulse and engine of urban changes, a source of new advantages and attractions. Some point out that it mainly develops in big cities, where the authorities deliberately implement measures aimed at supporting and attracting creative entities. The purpose of this study is to present the condition of the creative sector in Warsaw and the way its functioning is perceived by its representatives. It also discusses the support of city authorities for the development of the creative sector.

    The article presents trends of change in Warsaw's economic structure and their influence upon the formation of the city's functional and spatial structure. Using the latest data on the employment structure and kinds of economic entities and their distribution, an attempt has also been made to determine the degree of absorption of the city economy by pro-development activities. On the basis of experiences of other European cities activity types indicating the existence of development trends in the city economy (pro-development activities) were chosen. Next, changes in the number of economic entities in these areas in 1988-2004 were analyzed. Research on the distribution of economic entities in Warsaw is based upon data from the REGON register.
