The article discusses the effect of automation on occupations in general and more specifically on STEM jobs in the USA. Some aspects of political considerations affecting policies and regulations related to energy production in the USA and beyond are also addressed. This work deals with the study of the photoluminescence and reflectivity properties of Zn$\text{}_{x}$Mg$\text{}_{1-x}$Se epilayers grown by molecular beam epitaxy on (001)GaAs and (111)ZnTe substrates. The photoluminescence spectra of Zn$\text{}_{x}$Mg$\text{}_{1-x}$Se layers grown on GaAs and ZnTe substrates are dominated by blue emission bands. The energetical positions and relative intensities of the bands depend on Mg contents in the epilayers. The shift of the maxima of blue emission toward higher photon energies and a simultaneous steep increase in the linewidth with an increase in Mg concentration are observed. A small amount of Mg added to ZnSe leads to a sharp increase in the linewidth from 2 meV in pure ZnSe layer grown on GaAs substrate to about 180 meV in Zn$\text{}_{0.78}$Μg$\text{}_{0.22}$Se.

This work deals with the study of photoluminescence properties of Zn$\text{}_{x}$Mg$\text{}_{1-x}$Se epilayers grown by molecular beam epitaxy on (001) GaAs and (111) ZnTe substrates and Zn$\text{}_{x}$Mg$\text{}_{1-x}$Se layers obtained by thermal diffusion of Mg into ZnSe single crystals. Luminescence spectra of Zn$\text{}_{x}$Mg$\text{}_{1-x}$Se layers are dominated by blue and violet emission bands with maxima positioned in the range of photon energies: 3.05-3.28 eV, 2.88-3.04 eV, 2.81 eV and 2.705 eV, depending on preparation conditions. In some samples the blue luminescence is observed up to room temperature.

Linear optical properties of the Zn$\text{}_{1-x}$Mg$\text{}_{x}$Se (0 ≤ x ≤ 0.4) alloys have been studied using reflectance, spectroscopic ellipsometry and photoluminescence measurements. The refractive indices of Zn$\text{}_{1-x}$Mg$\text{}_{x}$Se epilayers were investigated as a function of Mg composition (0 ≤ x ≤ 0.4). The energies of band gap E$\text{}_{g}$ and spin-orbit splitting E$\text{}_{g}$+Δ, have been determined. These energies are shifted gradually to higher values with increasing Mg content.

A study of the Raman scattering in Zn$\text{}_{1-x}$Mg$\text{}_{x}$Se (0 ≤ x ≤ 0.4) epilayers grown by molecular beam epitaxy on (100) GaAs and (111)$\text{}_{Zn}$ ZnTe substrates has been performed. Two kinds of longitudinal optical phonon modes (LO$\text{}_{Zn-Se}$ and LO$\text{}_{Mg-Se}$) were observed under excitation of the Ar$\text{}^{+}$ and Kr$\text{}^{+}$ laser lines at room temperature, whose frequencies and intensities depend characteristically on the Mg content.

Opis:
Violin bridge transmits vibration of the strings on the violin body. In numerous publications, the feet of the bridge are often glued to a rigid surface. In this paper the authors present a model of the bridge based on springs. The movement of the top of the bridge is partially limited by the violin strings. This movement limitation is modelled as an additional spring. Furthermore, it is possible to introduce a model of sound post. The material of the bridge (maple) is modelled as anisotropic.

In the present study, a titanium cellular lattice structure with a mathematical designed porosity gradient was successfully fabricated using the selective laser melting method. The samples with smooth gradient transition of porosity of between 60% and 80% were received for different elementary cell geometries. Elementary cells belong to the triply periodic minimal surfaces family (G, D, I2Y, IWP). Each sample was subjected to a comprehensive analysis including: dimensional metrology and assessment of material defects (X-ray micro-tomography), surface morphology tests (scanning electron microscopy) and mechanical properties (universal testing machine). It has been shown that a cellular lattice with high dimensional accuracy (+ 0.16/– 0.08 mm) and full dense struts can be obtained. According to the assumption, the gradient increases the strength of the cellular lattice samples. The highest increase in plateau stress between the samples with and without gradient was found for the I2Y series (about 185%). Furthermore, it was found that the stress-strain response of the samples depends not only on total porosity, but also on the 3D geometry of the cellular lattice. The stress-strain curves for G, IWP and I2Y samples are smooth and exhibit three characteristic regions: linear elasticity, plateau region and densification region. The size of regions depends on the geometric features of the cellular lattice. For series D, in the plateau region, the fluctuations in stress value are clearly visible. The smoothest stress-strain curve can be noted for the G series, which combined with good mechanical properties (the plateau stress and energy absorbed, at respectively 25.5 and 43.2 MPa, and 46.3J and 59.5J for Gyr_80 and Gyr_6080, which corresponds to a strain of almost 65% and 50%) positively affects the applicability of cellular structures with such geometry.

In the paper apossibility of using ametrology micro computed tomography (CT) to assess quality of parts made by rapid prototyping technique was presented. Additive manufacturing techniques dramatically change the approach to manufacturing process. Not long ago they allowed solely for obtaining aspatial model of apart in order to visualize its features. Nowadays, it is possible to produce elements and assembly groups with properties that make it possible to replace many parts manufactured using traditional casting or injection techniques. Polymer components created by means of 3D printing can be generated one layer of material after another. In many cases inner spaces (sections) are not fully filled in (solid), they are rather replaced by aspecially selected structure. Thanks to this it is possible to save material and reduce weight. To control these structures and to inspect joints between particular layers using anon-destructive method it is necessary to use ametrology micro CT. In the paper an application of X-ray computed tomography and assessment of measurement uncertainty regarding elements manufactured with fused deposition modeling (FDM) method using ABS 3D printing on UP! printer was presented. Inspection of both: inner structure and outer shapes as well as joints between them was performed basing on computer aided design (CAD) model.
W pracy przedstawiono możliwość zastosowania pomiarowej tomografii komputerowej (CT) do oceny jakości elementów wykonanych techniką szybkiego prototypowania. Techniki wytwarzania addytywnego rewolucjonizują podejście do technik wytwarzania. Jeszcze niedawno pozwalały jedynie na uzyskanie przestrzennego modelu w celu jego wizualizacji. Obecnie możliwe jest uzyskanie gotowych elementów o właściwościach pozwalających na zastąpienie wielu wyrobów wykonywanych tradycyjnymi technikami odlewania lub wtryskiwania. Elementy polimerowe uzyskiwane za pomocą druku 3D wytwarzane są przez nakładanie kolejnych warstw materiału. W wielu wypadkach wewnętrzne przestrzenie (przekroje) elementu nie są całkowicie wypełnione, ale są zastępowane przez odpowiednio dobraną strukturę wewnętrzną. Pozwala to na oszczędność materiału i redukcję masy elementów. Kontrola jakości tych struktur, jak i połączeń pomiędzy poszczególnymi warstwami, jest możliwa w sposób nieniszczący jedynie za pomocą pomiarowej tomografii komputerowej. Metodę rentgenowskiej tomografii komputerowej zastosowano do oceny niepewności pomiaru elementów wykonanych z ABS techniką osadzania topionego materiału (FDM) z zastosowaniem drukarki UP! 3D. Dokonano badania i oceny na podstawie modelu projektowanego ze wspomaganiem komputerowym (CAD) z uwzględnieniem zarówno powierzchni zewnętrznych, jak i wewnętrznej struktury oraz połączeń pomiędzy poszczególnymi elementami.

Construction of metallic implants with a porous structure that mimics the biomechanical properties of bone is one of the challenges of orthopedic regenerative medicine. The selective laser sintering technique (SLS) allows the production of complex geometries based on three-dimensional model, which offers the prospect of preparing porous metal implants, in which stiffness and porosity can be precisely adjusted to the individual needs of the patient. This requires an interdisciplinary approach to design, manufacturing and testing of porous structures manufactured by selective sintering. An important link in this process is the ability to assess the surface topography of the struts of porous structure. The paper presents a qualitative assessment of the surface morphology based on SEM studies and methodology that allows for quantitative assessment of stereometric structure based on micro-tomographic measurements.

Structure and dynamics of suspensions of charged colloidal spheres in water were studied by means of small-angle X-ray scattering and X-ray photon correlation spectroscopy using synchrotron radiation. Experimentally obtained dependences on the scattering vector q of the structure factor S(q), short-time collective diffusion coefficient D(q) and hydrodynamic function H(q) were in good agreement with theoretical predictions. No effect of screening of the hydrodynamic interactions, suggested in the literature, was found. The conditions are discussed at which the maximum of the hydrodynamic function peak value H(q_m) can be obtained experimentally.

The paper presents an analysis of influence of ambient temperature changes on the values of parameters in topography measurements with the use of different profilometry techniques. In order to check this, a series of measurements was performed. Two multiprofilometry instruments were used - a contact profilometer, further equipped with an interferometric transducer, and an optical one with a confocal probe. Measurements were performed on first-class flat interferometric glass and on an A-type roughness standard - under different conditions, with simultaneous registration of differences in ambient temperature values. These values were either intentionally changed or the temperature variations were the result of air conditioning control. The performed research showed that - despite the asperities on the surface being really small - there is a relationship between changes of temperature and the results obtained from the measured surface, which in some cases can be seriously distorted.

This article is a contribution to the ongoing debate on the scenario of the vehicle powertrains development. The directions of the internal combustion engines development in search of the possibility of effective economic and ecological indicators improvement have been indicated. It has been pointed out that this goal can be achieved through the use of nanotechnology in order to exceed the downsizing barriers resulting from the permissible mechanical loads for conventional materials. The article presents the study of the construction and materials used in the piston assembly of the most advanced four-cylinder, compression-ignition diesel engine currently in manufacture. Original concepts of nanotechnology have been proposed to reduce friction losses in major friction components of future engines with extremely high loads. The main idea is to verify the hypothesis that the sub-micron surface texture of the friction components obtained in the process of applying anti-wear outer layers can lead to an effective reduction of friction losses under real engine operating conditions. Computer simulations of the effects of introducing the surface texture in the upper sealing ring on friction loss confirm this hypothesis by showing friction value being reduced by 3-4% relative to the standard ring profile. In the summary, further advanced technologies designed to effectively utilize the unique properties of carbon nanotubes have been described.

Non-invasive method of the measurement and identification of shape and geometrical characteristics of measured detail based on the computer tomograph is widely applied in medicine with high efficiency. The paper is aimed at presenting the metrological analysis of the accuracy of shape reproduction. The examined shape was described due to the tomography and compared to the results of coordinate measurement. The comparative accuracy analysis of the tomography was performed for the typical details, as well as for the masters made with high accuracy. Using the results of the analysis, the respective models of measured details were created and used as a nominal in the further investigations. The results of the measurement with tomography were compared with the results achieved from the measurement by means of typical coordinate measuring machines and by means of 3D measurement optical scanner. Analysis of the gained values of the form deviations and important geometrical characteristics enabled to perform complex analysis of the shape reproduction of the examined detail with the method of computer tomography. The main purpose of the performed researches was the determination of the reproduction accuracy of surface measured with non-invasive computer tomography method. The investigations and analysis have been performed with the following equipment: computer tomograph, 3D printer and coordinate optical scanner supported with specialized software for advanced CAD data analysis.
