Opis:
Depression in the Quaternary bedrock in the Lower Vistula Region was a main route for the Scandinavian ice sheets advancing into the Polish Lowland. At the end of the Elsterian Glaciation the receding ice sheet dammed the meltwaters in the Lower Vistula Valley and in its vicinity. The Holstein sea presumably occupied the Gulf of Gdańsk as indicated by brackish deposits of this age in the Kaliningrad District. During the Eemian Interglacial an extensive sea bay existed in the Lower Vistula Region. The Lower Vistula Region is a stratotype area for the Vistulian Glaciation (Weichselian), with several ice sheet advances, also before the Last Glacial Maximum.

Opis:
Aerial photographs taken from kites provide a versatile and low-cost means to acquire high-resolution, large-scale imagery for special Quaternary investigations. Kite aerial photographs (KAP) are typically taken from heights of 50-150 m using light-weight automatic cameras. Pictures may be acquired in vertical and oblique vantages. Scanning of photographs and digital processing allow for resampling, enhancement, and analysis of images. We have utilized basic KAP at five sites in eastern and northern Poland in order to evaluate the potential of KAP for Quaternary investigations. Our preliminary results suggest that KAP may provide detailed and repetitive imagery of geomorphic conditions, soils, land cover/use, and other surface features related to Quaternary processes, landforms, and deposits. However, KAP will not replace conventional aerial photography for general survey and mapping purposes.

Opis:
A model consisting of a string embedded in an elastic medium and terminated by a harmonic oscillator has been studied in the frequency and time domains to elucidate the physical effects of supersonic and subsonic leaky waves as well as that of true surface waves. A supersonic leaky wave manifests itself by a resonant maximum of the local density of states within the band of bulk waves and by an anomalous dispersion of the real part of the frequency dependent response function. The time domain impulse response then contains mainly resonant contribution from the poles of the response function in analogy to ordinary resonances. True surface waves show generally analogous behaviour. Here, however, the phenomenon is governed by dissipation mechanisms different from the radiation into the bulk. An important difference is that the impulse response contains equilibrated contributions due to the poles and due to the stop frequency gap in the case of true surface waves. The main manifestation of a subsonic leaky wave, i.e. a surface resonance with the frequency situated in the stop gap, is a sharp peak of the real part of the frequency-dependent response function just at the bottom of the bulk waves band. This is in certain analogy with a large reactive power in electric circuits. A strong destructive interference of the resonant part of the impulse response with the part due to the gap makes the time domain response fast attenuated.

Opis:
In this paper we present Raman scattering and photoluminescence spectra measured on CdTe/ZnTe self assembled quantum dots. The photoluminescence spectrum has shown two main emission peaks, both connected with existing of quantum dots. One presents direct deexcitation to ground state and the other is optical phonon (οmega = 207.3 $cm^{-1}$)-assisted deexcitation. The registered multiphonon emission process depends on temperature. At low temperature phonon spectra shows line at 450 $cm^{-1}$ (TA + 2LO in ZnTe) and 595 $cm^{-1}$ (2LO + TO(Γ) in ZnTe).

Opis:
Progressive supranuclear palsy (PSP) is a neurological disease leading to the damage of two brain structures: globus pallidus and substantia nigra. The pathomechanism of this disease is still unknown. One of the hypotheses is oxidative stress. Oxidative stress is an overproduction of free radicals in which iron may be involved. To verify the hypothesis that iron may play a role in PSP we performed the Mössbauer comparative studies of pathological and control tissues. Ten samples of PSP globus pallidus, ten samples of PSP substantia nigra, twelve control samples of globus pallidus and nine control samples of substantia nigra were measured in a conventional Mössbauer spectrometer at 90 K. The Mössbauer spectra obtained for all samples showed well resolved doublets with an isomer shift of 0.46±0.01 mm/s and a quadruple splitting of 0.70±0.02 mm/s. The main difference in these preliminary studies was in the concentration of iron. The concentration in PSP samples in globus pallidus was found to be 257±19 ng/mg tissue, compared to 183±22 ng/mg in control samples and 301±26 ng/mg in substantia nigra compared to 188±22 ng/mg in control samples. Taking into consideration that we did not notice any substantial increase in iron concentration in Parkinsonian substantia nigra compared to control substantia nigra, but a substantial increase in both substantia nigra and globus pallidus in PSP, may suggest that iron plays a different role in the pathomechanisms of PSP and of Parkinson's disease.

Opis:
Alzheimer disease is a neurodegenerative process of unknown mechanism taking place in a part of the brain - hippocampus. Oxidative stress and the role of iron in it is one of the suggested mechanisms of cells death. In this study several methods were used to assess iron and iron binding compounds in human hippocampus tissues. Mössbauer spectroscopy was used for identification of the iron binding compound and determination of total iron concentration in 12 control and one Alzheimer disease sample of hippocampus. Mössbauer parameters obtained for all samples suggest that most of the iron is ferritin-like iron. The average concentration of iron determined by Mössbauer spectroscopy in control hippocampus was 45±10 ng/mg wet tissue. The average concentration of iron in 10 Alzheimer disease samples determined by atomic absorption was 66±13 ng/mg wet tissue. The concentration of H and L chains of ferritin in 20 control and 10 AD hippocampi was assessed with enzyme-linked immuno-absorbent assay. The concentration of H and L ferritin was higher in Alzheimer disease compared to control (19.36±1.51 vs. 5.84±0.55 ng/μg protein for H, and 1.39±0.25 vs. 0.55±0.10 for L). This 3-fold increase of the concentration of ferritin is accompanied by a small increase of the total iron concentration.
