Composites and nanocomposites as commercially used engineering materials with continuous development, are important for rising market and industry needs. Significant role is played by polymers, whose consumption increases every year, thanks to low cost of production, economical processing and broad scope of material composition possibilities, including nanomaterials and basing on them nanocomposites. Nanocomposites, using power of nanotechnology, may improve physical, chemical and mechanical properties, comparing to composites. Investigation of structure and properties of such materials is necessary to obtain knowledge about phenomena at micro and nanoscale and gives opportunity to design and control structure, because the properties of any material depend on its matter. Polymer matrix nanocomposites are interesting and very promising class of polymer composites. Investigation of structure development due to different heat treatment and under different processing condition of injection molded specimens of polypropylene and montmorillonite composition has been performed. Dispersion of nanoreinforcement, in the shape of 2:1 layer silicates, was observed under transmission and scanning electron microscope. Application of advanced technology of multiplication of oriented layer mostly reinforcing and orienting micro and nanoparticles along polymeric specimen, allowed to obtain several layers and significantly reinforced material. Light microscope has been used for observation layered zone, visible just in polarization mode.

The aim of this study was to evaluate the influence of training on body surface temperature over the joints in racehorses, measured by infrared thermography. The study involved monitoring of 14 Thoroughbred racehorses in 6 imaging sessions over a period of 3 months. Temperature measurements of the forelimb and hindlimb joints were made before and just after training. Joint temperature of limbs increased significantly after training. Environmental temperature had a statistically significant influence on surface temperature over the joints. The lowest surface temperatures were recorded over the metacarpophalangeal and metatarsophalangeal joint and the highest temperatures in the shoulder, elbow, hip and stifle joint. The metacarpophalangeal and metatarsophalangeal joints warmed the least during training, but were influenced the most by differences in environmental temperature. The surface temperature difference before and after training is an important indicator of the thermoregulatory response to exercise in racing horses. Understanding surface temperature changes in response to regular training is necessary for future studies on diagnosing injuries of joints.

One of the most common worldwide rubbing couple which performs plane-turning motion is a pair of selling rings - cylinder sleeve of a Piston - Ring- Cylinder (PRC) system of a combustion engine. It explains the necessity of performing investigations concerning the phenomenon occurring in rubbing couple PRC. One of the most important issues is the friction losses as well as losses of the working medium from the combustion chamber. Mathematical models of gas flow in the PRC are described in the literature differ in the way of description and scope of the phenomena taken into account. In this paper approach to determine the flow spaces between the rings considering the effect of the geometry of the PRC system has been proposed. Investigation conducted with aid of CFD (Computational Fluid Dynamics) were aimed on determination of flow resistance within the surface between the piston, rings, and cylinder liner. Aim of the study was achieved - The pressure field. it has been found that it is possible to determine the pressure field in the space of the PRC system basing on the approximation of the generalized transport equations for a discrete geometric model using the finite volume method. The precision of the results depends on the account in the form of boundary conditions as well as external conditions.

The mineral framework and pore waters of glacial sediments exposed in the foreland of Weren- skioldbreen in SW Spitsbergen were sampled and analyzed to model the evolution of pore water chemistry, representing the advancement of weathering in a chronosequence. Three samples were taken at distances representing snapshots of approximately 5, 45 and 70 years of exposure. Complementary mineralogical analyses of the mineral framework and chemical analyses of pore waters, coupled with thermodynamic modelling of mineral-water interactions were applied. Recently uncovered sediments of the bottom moraine underwent very little weathering underneath the glacier cover; both the sediments and pore waters in the forefield of the Werenskioldbreen represent a very immature system. Poorly sorted sediments were deposited by the glacier and not reworked by fluvioglacial waters. The ratio of ‘amorphous iron’ to ‘free iron’ Feo/Fed increases with distance from the glacier terminus from 0.30 through 0.36 to 0.49, typical for fresh glacial till. The increase in saturation with CO2 (from p(CO2) –3.8 to –2.4) and the concentration of all major ions in pore waters (from 123 to 748 mg/L total dissolved solids, TDS) was observed in this young chronosequence. The waters evolved from carbonate- dominated to sulphate-dominated, indicating that with progress in weathering the dominating processes are equilibration with carbonates, oxidation of sulphides and the influence of gypsum precipitation by seasonal freeze-thaw cycles. Mass balance calculations and inverse modelling of the composition of pore waters, verified by microscopic observations of alteration on the surfaces of mineral grains, allowed thermodynamic confirmation of the fact that the relative significance of carbonate weathering decreases and that of sulphate increases down the chronosequence. The participation of silicate minerals in weathering is low, indicating a relatively immature stage of weathering within this particular chronosequence. It is significant that the morphology of etch pits and the formation of secondary phases apparent on mineral surfaces were identical, regardless of the distance from the glacier terminus. This might indicate that the mechanisms of particular weathering processes at the mineral-water interface are the same at the initial as well as at the more mature stages and do not change at least within ca. 70 years of exposure.

This paper contains an experimental investigation of a movable wall with variable shape response to a shock wave. Here, the shock wave was generated by a pyrotechnic gas generator used in the automotive industry. The test station consists on a pyrotechnic actuator in which the movable wall is expressed as a piston. This pyrotechnic actuator was specially design for such type of an investigation. Its design allows withstanding numerous tests without affecting the accuracy. What was under investigation here was the actuators piston stroke velocity and which, as it appeared, changes with respect to the various shape of the actuators interior as well as a corresponding to the barrier velocity total pressure existing within the expansion chamber of the actuator. The results shown here correspond to the flat surface as well as conical and concave cylinder bottom of the actuator. The conical and flat piston surface is considered as a reference for subsequent investigation because such a design is the most similar to the existing pyrotechnically driven designs. The experimental research proves that the performance of pyrotechnically driven devices is dependent upon the shock wave shaping.

This article presents selected information on the use of biomass as an energy source. Biomass is a renewable resource, it can be obtained from, inter alia, selected municipal waste. The most popular methods of generating energy from biomass is its combustion or fermentation. In Poland, the renewable energy sector is still small and should be developed because of the need to improve the condition of the environment and, at the same time, increasing demand for energy related to economic development. Energy from biomass is relatively unpopular. At the same time there is a problem of too big amount of waste that is not processed. Because of European Union regulations on the energetics and waste management it is required in Poland to adapt legislation in order to increase the share of renewable energy sources and to reduce the amount of waste landfilled. The solution may be energy production from biomass, derived from selected municipal waste.
Odpady komunalne jako biomasa - odnawialne źródło energii Poniższy artykuł przedstawia wybrane informacje na temat wykorzystania biomasy jako źródła energii. Biomasa jest surowcem odnawialnym, może być pozyskiwana między innymi z wyselekcjonowanych odpadów komunalnych. Najpopularniejszymi metodami pozyskiwania energii z biomasy jest jej spalanie lub fermentacja. W Polsce sektor odnawialnych źródeł energii jest wciąż niewielki, powinien być rozwijany ze względu na konieczność poprawy stanu środowiska naturalnego przy jednoczesnym, rosnącym zapotrzebowaniu na energię, związanym z rozwojem gospodarczym. Pozyskiwanie energii z biomasy jest stosunkowo mało popularne. Jednocześnie istnieje problem zbyt dużej ilości odpadów, które nie są poddawane przetworzeniu. Regulacje Unii Europejskiej w obszarze energetyki i gospodarki odpadami nakładają na Polskę obowiązek dostosowania prawodawstwa w celu zwiększenia udziału odnawialnych źródeł energii oraz zmniejszenia ilości odpadów, które trafiają na wysypiska. Rozwiązaniem może być pozyskiwanie energii z biomasy, pochodzącej z wyselekcjonowanych odpadów komunalnych.

The article presents results of research work which aim was development of solution for volatile organic compounds (VOCs) removal from vehicle indoor air. VOCs, especially benzene, toluene, and xylene (BTX), are air pollutants responsible for many civilizational diseases because of its carcinogenic and mutagenic properties. Concentration of those substances can be even few times higher in micro atmosphere of vehicle cabin than in other indoor atmospheres [1]. The aim of the scientific cooperation between Dr. Schneider Automotive Polska and the Wroclaw University of Science and Technology (WUST) is research on innovative (international range), product development – photocatalytic reactor characterized by Volatile Organic Compounds, especially BTX removal properties. The BTX reduction effectiveness, caused by photocatalytic reactor application in vehicle ventilation system, was subjected to in-depth analysis. The results showed difference on not only maximal benzene, toluene, and xylene reduction (separately) but also in the pattern of response surface. In some tested parameters, the hazardous compounds (as a BTX sum) were reduced for almost 70%. The photocatalytic reactor seems to be prospective solution for air quality improvement in any vehicle cabin.

The consequence of biomass gasification is generation of a gas mixture composed mainly of hydrogen, carbon mono and dioxide, and methane, called SNG (Substitute Natural Gas) which can be utilized as an alternative fuel for internal combustion engines. However, the product gas mixture cannot be directly supplied to the engine due to variability of its composition as well as its impurities. This brings the necessity to conduct a series of procedures of gas purification and conditioning before supplying the engine. This paper therefore deliberates a concept of gas conditioning method.
W wyniku procesów zgazowania biomasy powstaje mieszanina gazów składająca się między innymi z wodoru, tlenu węgla, ditlenku węgla i metanu, tzw. syngaz, który może zostać wykorzystany jako paliwo alternatywne do silnika spalinowego. Powstały syngaz, ze względu na swój skład (występowanie zanieczyszczeń) i parametry nie może być jedna podany do silnika w sposób bezpośredni. Niezbędne jest więc przeprowadzenie szeregu zabiegów kondycjonowania i oczyszczania gazu syntetycznego. W pracy przedstawiono koncepcję i metody kondycjonowania gazów.

Aviation is one of the fastest growing modes of transport. Due to the growing number of flights, the consumption of aviation fuels (mainly jet fuels) keeps increasing. The combustion process in the aircraft engine results in harmful exhaust emissions having an adverse impact on the environment. Alternative fuels based on bio-components and biofuels are a way of reducing the harmful exhaust emissions. Analyses and measurements performed on real aircraft engines are complex and expensive. For this reason, increasingly more research and development projects have been carried out on small-scale engines. This paper presents investigations into volatile organic compound emissions from jet fuel combustion in a miniature turbojet engine. Based on chromatography tests, the compositions of exhaust gases produced by the jet engine fed with various fuels were determined, which in turn led to evaluation of its toxicity and harmfulness. Conventional fossil-based fuel Jet A-1 and a blend of Jet A-1 with 25 vol. % of biobutanol were tested at the same fuel flow rates. The engine working parameters such as, e.g., thrust or emission index have been determined with respect to the type of fuel. The test results have been compared and analyzed.

This paper constitutes the approach to correlate the results of gas purification properties performed with aid of photocatalysis with the cytotoxicity test results. The gas purification by means of photocatalysis is a subject well known a profusely described in literature. Easiness and continence of application causes the photocatalysis to be used in variety of industries, however this paper considers only automotive industry application. The effectiveness of photocatalysis have been proven experimentally by vast number of researchers. However, the literature contains only the information about the level of volatile organic compounds identification and reduction. The toxicity measure in terms of living cells was not yet fully tested and described in literature. Therefore, the standard chromatography test which enables quantitative identification of volatile organic compounds was confronted with a cytotoxicity tests revealing the virtual toxicity of gases before and after photocatalysis.

In large cities the number of inhabitants constantly increases. It is caused by economic issues. The evergrowing populations causes more intense traffic and in consequence increase of air pollutions. Topology and roads configuration is conducive to the accumulation of toxic substances. Harmful substances accumulates inside the vehicles interiors which significantly deteriorate microclimate within the cabin. The study aimed to determine the amount of harmful substances getting into the interior of vehicles and their distribution have been presented in this paper.

The aim of the present study was to increase the solubility of clotrimazole. Among the methods to increase the solubility selected solid dispersions of the drug with the polymer. Chitosan was used as the polymer. Clotrimazole was incorporated into the chitosan type 652 with molar masse chitosan Mη = 429 kDa. Solid dispersions were prepared by using different ratios of clotrimazole and chitosan (1:9, 3:7, 5:5, 7:3, 9:1). Formulations were tested dissolution rate of the drug. The highest dissolution of clotrimazole, amounting to 47.95%, was observed after 60 minutes from solid dispersion prepared by grinding method and 42.84% from physical mixtures with drug-polymer weight ratio 1:9 in the presence chitosan. The solubility of the drug improved more than 37-fold. XRPD analysis indicates the presence of the clotrimazole in crystalline form in the solid dispersion obtained by kneading method.

One of the dramatic effects of global warming is the retreat of glaciers. This phenomenon has intensified in the last two decades. Postglacial areas are quickly colonised by various groups of organisms. Auto- and heterotrophic microorganisms play an especially vital role in these processes. They thrive in shallow glacial lagoons which often form in front of retreating glaciers. These reservoirs are characterised by high dynamics of physicochemical parameters, including: salinity, temperature and concentrations of organic compounds and nutrients. The conducted microbiological studies have revealed rich structural and functional diversity of bacteria occurring in the ecosystem of Ecology Lagoon situated on King George Island. Bacteria found on the surface of algae and stones in the shore zone of the lagoon showed particularly intense metabolic activity. A molecular analysis has indicated that unique taxonomic groups of bacteria occur in the ecosystem of Ecology Lagoon.

Ecology problems are addressed in all areas of engineering. Gasification is widely used methodology, which allows to power vehicles and fuel generators via alternative fuel. The more it seems important to address the issues of gasification in the group of scientists dealing with machines. In article authors present results of methodology in effectivity of gasification graduation. The base of experiment is the complimentary reactor, which was made for gasification of different materials. Gases that are achieved on the output of the system are used to supply combustion engines. In article, expect mentioned methodology, authors present reactor build and measurement (including complimentary software) system, mounted on system. The new energy supplies are still discovered. At the same time, researchers on good know substances are in progress. In article, authors are presented one of the methods of gasification reactor effectivity. Authors’ reactor has a burning chamber, and outlet circuit. Presented methodology was relayed on E-E system with software part. System is contained a few thermocouples with multiplexing ADC card for acquisition of data. All parts are presented in an article. An article is a result of progressing grant in DEMONSTRATOR+ program (no. WND-DEM-1-527/001).
