Opis:
Introduction. Yerba Mate, also called Paraguay tea, is obtained from the dried leaves (approximately 95%) and stems (about 5%) of the evergreen shrub-tree Ilex paraguariensis. Each year, the consumption of yerba mate becomes increasingly popular in North America and Europe. The fashion for Paraguay tea has also reached Poland. During the period 2012 – 2018, as much as an 8-fold increase has been observed in the import of this raw material to our country. Objective. The aim of the study is analysis of the present state of knowledge concerning the health effects of Yerba Mate, based on selected scientific literature. Dicussion. The consumption of yerba mate may exert a beneficial effect on human health and its consumption is recommended in the treatment of obesity and while practicing sports. Nevertheless, it should be remembered that a very high consumption of the tea, especially when very hot, may increase the risk of occurrence of cancer, which has not been unequivocally confirmed by scientific studies to-date. Conclusions. It has been confirmed that this beverage shows a number of beneficial health effects, including: a protective effect on liver cells, stimulation of the central nervous system, anti-inflammatory effect, as well as a positive effect on the cardiovascular system.

Opis:
Scanning electron microscopy micrograms of the elytra of Liparus glabrirostris showed a different dorsal and ventral surface and a multilayered inner structure. Hydration kinetics, sorption isotherm, and proton free induction decays are measured for hydrated elytra of the weevil species Liparus glabrirostris (Coleoptera: Curculionidae) in the atmosphere with controlled humidity. Very tightly bound water fraction with the mass Δ m/$m_0$ = 0.037 ± 0.004, and very short hydration time, tightly bound water Δ m/$m_0$ = 0.034 ± 0.009, and hydration time $t_1^{h}$ = (3.31 ± 0.93) h, and finally loosely bound water fraction with $t_2^{h}$ = (25.5 ± 7.8) h were distinguished. The sorption isotherm is sigmoidal in form, with the mass of water saturating primary water binding sites equal of Δ M/$m_0$ = 0.036. The proton free induction decays show the presence of solid signal (well fitted by a Gaussian function) from elytra ($T_{2G}$* ≈ 18 μs), the immobilized water fraction ($T_{2L_1}$* ≈ 120 μs) and mobile water pool ($T_{2 L_2}$* ≈ 300 μs). The hydration dependence of the water bound in elytra of L. glabrirostris, L/S is linear showing the absence of water-soluble solid fraction and negligible content of water pool "sealed" in pores of the structure.

Opis:
As well as having the information about the nutritional value of raw meat, today’s consumers expect to be informed to what extent cooked meat meals satisfy recommended nutrition standards. The aim of the study was to estimate the degree to which the demand for selected macrominerals (K, Na, Mg, Ca) and microminerals (Zn, Fe, Mn, Cu) by adults and children is met by a portion of 100 g of cooked beef. For calculations, the average cooking loss at 40% and retention factors between 0.85 and 1.0 were taken into consideration. The degree of satisfying Polish nutrition standards (Recommended Dietary Allowance – RDA and Adequate Intake – AI) was analysed depending on a muscle (longissimus lumborum – LL vs. semitendinosus – ST) and breed of young bulls (Polish Red – PR, Whitebacked – WB, Polish Black-and-White – PBW, Simmental – SIM and Polish Holstein-Fresian – PHF). Among the evaluated cattle breeds, the meat of PHF bulls met to the greatest degree the recommended dietary allowance (RDA) for Zn, Fe and Mn, and to the smallest degree the daily requirement for K and Mg. The LL and ST muscles satisfied the nutritional standards for major minerals to a similar degree, and were primarily (especially the LL muscle) a good source of Zn and Fe (for adults and children), as well as a source of K, Mg and Cu for children. Consumption of 100 g of cooked meat (depending on the breed) satisfied from 52% to 85% of the RDA for Zn for women, 38-62% for men and as much as 83-136% for children. For Fe, the percentages were 14-20% for women and 26-36% both for men and children. Cooked beef was an important source of Mg, particularly for children, as a portion of 100 g met from 27% to 35% of their RDA. However, the same portion met only 3-5% of the daily standard for Na for adults and 4-6% for children.

Opis:
Fish are an important component of a balanced human diet. Marine fish are more popular than freshwater fish among Polish consumers. All fish are an excellent source of minerals, which the human body cannot synthesize. Hence, they should be provided with food in right amounts and proportions. However, fish can be contaminated by heavy metals. For this reason, it is very important to determine the levels of selected trace elements in fish. The aim of this study was to compare the content of mineral compounds in the muscle tissue of two species of fish from the Baltic Sea, i.e. plaice (Pleuronectes platessa) and garfish (Belone belone). Wet-digested fish muscle samples were used to analyze the content of macro- (K, Na, Ca, Mg), and micronutrients (Zn, Fe, Mn, Cu) determined with flame atomic absorption spectrometry (AAS), and the levels of heavy metals (Cd, Pb) using flameless AAS. No significant differences between the species in the concentrations of K, Mg, Ca, Cu and heavy metals appeared, while the Na, Mn, Zn and Fe concentrations were significantly different between the two fish. Higher levels of Na, Mg, Mn and heavy metals were determined in muscle tissue of European plaice, while concentrations of the other macroand micronutrients were higher in muscles of garfish. The muscles of both species showed equal levels of Cd and Pb, below the maximum allowable limits.

Opis:
Introduction. Diabetes is a civilisation disease creating a serious challenge for public health. In Poland, approximately 2 million people suffer from diabetes, of which about 25% are unaware of their illness. A considerable part of persons with diabetes experience complications related with the disease. Objective. The aim of the study was to determine the relationship between elements of the state of health and socio-demographic characteristics of diabetic patients treated in the Diabetes Clinic at the Institute of Rural Health (IMW) in Lublin, eastern Poland, and the occurrence of depressive symptoms in these patients. Materials and method. The study was conducted in 2017–2018 among patients treated in the Diabetes Clinic at the Institute of Rural Health in Lublin, by the method of a diagnostic survey using the Beck’s Depression Inventory and an author-constructed questionnaire, as well as data from the patients’ medical records. The study included 314 patients from the Diabetes Clinic who expressed their informed consent to participate in the research. Results. The study showed that diabetes is a disease which predisposes for the occurrence of depression. The occurrence of depressive symptoms of various degrees of intensity was confirmed in more than a half of the examined patients. Among the factors which exerted a significant effect on the occurrence of depressive symptoms were: diabetic neuropathy, type 2 diabetes, high BMI value, lack of occupational activity, poor material standard, and the need to obtain assistance in daily functioning due to the fact of being ill with diabetes. Conclusions. It is necessary to implement routinely performed examinations into the diagnostic-therapeutic process to assess the state of psychological health of diabetic patients, which would allow sufficiently early application of appropriate psychological or psychiatric intervention.

Opis:
At present, there is a great emphasis of public opinion on the legalisation of medical marijuana, i.e. the top parts of the cannabis plants rich in tetrahydrocannabinol (THC). Nevertheless, in the cannabis plants, there are many various cannabinoids, including cannabidiol (CBD). Scientific reports to-date indicate the possibility for using pharmacologically active cannabinoids in the treatment of such diseases/symptoms as: anorexia, vomiting, neuropathic pain, inflammatory diseases, multiple sclerosis, degenerative diseases of the central nervous system (Parkinson’s disease, Huntington’s disease, Alzheimer’s disease, Tourette’s syndrome), epilepsy, schizophrenia, and obesity. The article presents up-to-date information on the results of experimental studies concerning the effectiveness of cannabinoids, with particular consideration of diseases related with the central nervous system, including epilepsy, neuropathic pain, mental disorders, as well as obesity and anorexia.

Opis:
The effects of storing honey for 18 months at room temperature or in a freezer as well as the impact of heating it to different temperatures (30, 40 and 50°C) were studied. The rheological parameters of fresh rapeseed honey were compared to those of the non-stored and unheated samples (control). The storage temperature significantly influenced the rheological behaviour of the honey (except adhesiveness). Higher values of all textural parameters were found in frozen honey in comparison with control and room temperature samples. However, in comparison with the control samples, higher values (around twice) of the dynamic viscosity, firmness, work and adhesive force were produced by honey stored at room temperature. Thermal treatment of the honey heated at 30, 40 and 50°C influenced a continuous decrease in all of the textural properties (with the exception of the cohesive force) compared to the control samples (20°C). The average change in the texture-temperature coefficient for dynamic viscosity, firmness, work, adhesiveness and adhesive force from 20 to 50°C was similar (between 6.62 and 4.09%). Significant, very close and positive Spearmen’s rank correlations (0.894 ≤ rS ≤ 0.987) were observed for dynamic viscosity, firmness, work, adhesiveness and adhesive force. Lower correlations (0.524 ≤ rS ≤ 0.684) were found between the cohesive force and all of the other textural properties.

Quantum transfer matrix technique and numerically exact diagonalization method are applied to the Heisenberg spin systems to model ring-shaped molecules. Two cases are investigated: (i) a dozen of S = 1 spins with additional biquadratic exchange and (ii) a dimetallic molecule $Cr_7Cd$, where it is assumed that exchange anisotropy is determined in a local coordination system. In the latter case the calculated susceptibility is compared with experimental results.
