Opis:
Still at the end of the 20th and the beginning of the 21thcentury it was a common belief that the world had just entered a new civilisational paradigm, completely different from all the previous ones in the history of the mankind. The new paradigm was called ‘globalization’ and although it had never been precisely defined, the term stirred up a very animated dispute: there were fervent enthusiasts and fervent opponents of everything that was as inexactly defined as globalization. Both enthusiasts and opponents agreed what phenomena made globalization up, but the assessment of those phenomena was diametrically different; according to the enthusiasts globalization reduced famine in the world, stimulated development and growth, decreased unemployment, improved the quality of natural environment, created new global democracy and was the only reasonable option for the mankind; and according to the opponents globalization increased famine in the world, made development and growth stop or even diminish, aggravated unemployment, lowered the quality of natural environment, destroyed human solidarity, stimulated corruption and was a path to hell. The impact of globalization and deglobalization on different areas of economy and society is a topic of several discussions and publications.

Opis:
Theoretical background: The role of banks in the economy has attracted scientific interest for many centuries now. Generally speaking, the relationship between financial development and economic growth has been widely discussed. Many studies investigated the links between the development of the financial sector and a given country’s social and economic growth using econometric methods such as cross-section, time series, panel data, company-level, industry-level and country level. The banking sector is an integral part of the economy and plays a key role in its development. Purpose of the article: The ownership status of financial institutions is not neutral for themselves or for their clients. The research problem deals with analysing the impact of ownership changes in the banking and insurance sector on the economic and social development of selected countries, especially in Poland, measured with basic macroeconomic indicators. The article attempts to verify the hypothesis that the ownership structure in banking and insurance institutions has, contemporarily, no significant impact on the socio-economic development indicators, provided that these institutions are guided by business- rather than policy-based criteria in their decision making process. Research methods: Both qualitative and quantitative research was used to empirically verify the hypotheses in question. Qualitative research is based on descriptive analysis while quantitative research will include statistical information systemization method, based on statistical source data analysis, and static dependence methodology, including fixed effects and random effects panel models. Main findings: Literature studies and research show that moderation and pragmatism are needed in the financial sectors of EU countries, including Poland. We need both public (including state-owned) financial institutions (banks and insurers) and those controlled by private capital. It seems that today it would be difficult to accept that the entire financial sector of a given country would be taken over by public institutions – state-owned companies, and the omnipotence of private institutions would also be problematic. The main issue is proportions: instead of the exclusivity of one or the other form of ownership, one has to seek an intelligent balance between them (“this and that” instead of “either-or”).

Opis:
Competitiveness is not clearly defined and there are different methods of measuring it. Analysis of the level of competitiveness on a macro scale is of interest to many entities. Competitiveness rankings are published in the Global Competitiveness Report prepared by the World Economic Forum (WEF), among others. 137 countries have been included in the WEF’s 2017–2018 Report. A country’s position in this ranking depends on many factors, classified in 12 pillars. In the group of 10 countries with the highest ranking, there are changes in order compared to the previous year, but the composition of this group did not significantly change. In this ranking, Poland was 39th. This is relatively high compared to 2008, in which it ranked 53rd out of 134 countries. In the future, further growth of the competitiveness of the Polish economy may depend on, among other things, the professionalism of managerial staff and on the shift to product competitiveness. It is also necessary to share knowledge between the university and the business sectors and between companies themselves.
