Opis:
Studies of tissue such as bones and veins often are carried out by means of microscopic and ultrasonographic methods. Therefore studies of changes caused by pathological or physical factors often are limited to morphological level. Application of Raman spectroscopy permits to associate morphological changes and molecular changes. The paper presents preliminary studies of temperature and ionizing radiation effects on Raman spectra of bone and collagen. Furthermore, effects of pathological factors on Raman spectra of human veins had been studied. It was noticed that heating of bone collagen up to 110°C gives the reversible changes in spectra. In the case of γ-irradiation, any effects were observed up to the dose of 1 MGy on mineral component of bone, whereas the influence on collagen was observed for doses higher than 100 kGy. The Raman spectra of varicose vs. normal veins permit to conclude some important changes observed for veins from chronic venous insufficiency patients.

Opis:
Three elm species are native to Poland: wych elm (Scots elm) (Ulmus glabra Huds.), field elm (U. minor Mill.), and European white elm (fluttering elm) (U. laevis Pall.). The epidemic of Dutch elm disease (DED) has led to a decrease in the popularity of elm cultivation. An analysis of forestry data was the first step in the assessment of elm resources. The area of forest stands where elms are dominant has more than doubled since 1978. Lowland alluvial forests rank first in regards to the number of elm localities per unit area of a given forest site type. While this site type is clearly preferred by elms, the majority of elm trees are actually scattered among sites of oak-hornbeam or closely related forests (of the alliance Carpinion betuli). Field research revealed a clear dominance of U. laevis, a species which in the past was predominantly located out of woodland and rarely cultivated. Data analysis indicated that all trees greater than 70 cm in diameter belonged to this species. Data from plots surveyed directly also suggest that the three elm species have slightly different habitat preferences. U. laevis prefers riparian habitats, although the major part of its resources is now on potential sites of oak-hornbeam or closely related forests. U. minor even more often than U. laevis occurs at less humid sites (mostly potential sites of oak-hornbeam or closely related forests), while U. glabra prefers moist slopes. In general, it appears that the impact of DED in the last 20–30 years has been smaller than in the preceding period, however, the disappearance of the disease has not been established. Undoubtedly, U. laevis is the elm species that is least impacted by DED

This paper demonstrates the feasibility of using-a water tunnel for the visualisation of flow in airfoils with flight control systems in the form of slots and flaps. Furthermore, the issue of using water tunnels for scientific and training purposes was explained. The technology of 3D printed models for practical tests in a water tunnel was also presented. The experiment included conducting flow visualisation tests for three airfoil models: with the Clark Y 11.7% as the base airfoil and the same airfoil with a slot and a flap. Moreover, a modification to dye injection system was introduced. The presented results of flow visualisation around models with the use of dye, confirmed the effectiveness of the applied methodology. The results and conclusions may be utilized to verify most flow-related issues in hydrodynamic tunnels and can also be used as a training element.

Dutch elm disease (DED) still occurs in Poland. Previous studies confirmed occurring O. ulmi and two subspecies of O. novo-ulmi: subsp. novo-ulmi and subsp. amerciana. In this study the population of Ophiostoma occurred in Poland was investigated. The disease incidence was investigated on elms growing in 39 locations. The pathogen’s mycelium was isolated from elm branches and twigs collected from 22 plots. The disease symptoms were noted in 5% to 35% trees. Fungi were identified based on the PCR amplification of the ITS 1/2 rDNA together with phylogenetic analysis of this region. Ophiostoma novo-ulmi was the only agent caused DED on Ulmus glabra, U. minor and U. laevis. There were no genetic diversity of O. novo-ulmi Polish population in analyzed ITS region. All kind of specific symptoms and disease intensity occurred independently on elm species and host age. Ulmus minor was infested most sever among the three elms species.

Opis:
Investigation of mixed carbonate−siliciclastic Lower Devonian deposits have been carried out in the Ivanye Zolote and Ustechko sections in Podolia, Ukraine. Based on palynomorph evidence, the age of the samples studied is late Lochkovian, not older than the NM Oppel Miospore Zone, specifically the Si Lineage Zone. The presence of acritarchs and chitinozoans points to dominantly marine depositional conditions. However, a regressive environmental change toward more brackish conditions is indicated by a decrease in the taxonomic diversity of acritarchs in the topmost samples, the simultaneous disappearance of chitinozoans, and an increase in leiosphaerid frequency. Furthermore, evolution of limestone microfacies demonstrates a progressive transition from a shrinking marine basin toward a brackish, storm−affected muddy lagoon, manifested by recurrent profusion of impoverished, mostly opportunistic and euryhaline shelly benthos (nuculanid bivalves, leperditicopids and other ostracods, terebratulid brachiopods), chaetetid demosponges and diverse ichthyofauna. The association of plant (mainly nematophytes and some tracheids) and animal (eurypterid, ?scorpion, and possibly other arthropod) remains points to the presence of nearby Early Devonian wetland vegetation, providing food and shelter for various semi−aquatic and other terrestrial arthropods.

Opis:
In this paper, the effects of model (commercial) and natural (extracted from peat) humic substances on the membrane of liposomes formed with egg yolk lecithin (EYL) are presented. In our research, mass concentrations of fulvic and humic acids were used, which in relation to lecithin varied from 0% to 13%. To study membrane fluidity, electron spin resonance (EPR) was used with two spin probes, penetrating various regions of the lipid bilayer. The effects of model and natural humic substances (humic acids – HAs and fulvic acids – FAs) on the lipid membrane in different regions were researched: the lipid-water interphase, and in the middle of the lipid bilayer. It was shown that FA and HA impact the fluidity of liposome membranes in different ways. Increased mass concentrations of HAs decreased membrane fluidity in both acids: extracted from peat and the model. However, increased mass concentration of FAs extracted from peat, decreased membrane fluidity in the surface region, at the same time stiffening the central part of the bilayer. Increasing the concentration of FAs extracted from peat had the opposite effect when compared to model FA. This effect may be related to the complexation of xenobiotics present in the soil environment and their impact on biological membranes.

Opis:
Hip resurfacing surgery is a matter of controversy. Some authors present very good late results of 99% survival outcomes. However, national records of implants point to the series of complications connected with biomechanical flaws of the implant. These results implicate the experimental research on biomechanical properties of HRS. The aim of the research was to define the nature of cooperation between the components of hip resurfacing surgery (HRS) and the influence of the deformation of acetabulum, the size of the implant and the nature of the bone surface on the stress distribution in the acetabulum and the femoral component. The calculations were run with the use of the finite element method (FEM), using the ANSYS bundle for this purpose. Four decrete models of the studied system were made: a model with the elements of the system connected with glue, a perfect spherical model with cooperating surfaces, a model reflecting an elliptical deformation of the acetabulum, and a model with different sizes of the implant. The results indicate that the stress values obtained for models with the ideally spherical acetabulum cannot cause significant deformation of cooperating implants. In the case of loads of the elliptically deformed acetabulum significant point stress concentrations can be observed in the spots of joint. The size of the acetabular and femoral components of HRS has influence on the stress concentration on the internal surface of the acetabulum as well as in the bone tissue surrounding the madrel of the femoral component. Moreover, physical properties of the base surface surrounding the HRS components have influence on the size of stress in the acetabulum and the femoral component.

Opis:
Introduction. Osteoporosis, the “quiet epidemic”, is one of the most serious threats to public health. It is known that estrogen plays a significant role in the regulation of bone turnover, and its loss at menopause causes osteoporosis. Added to this, insufficient calcium intake accelerates bone mass loss, increasing the risk of fractures. Objective. The study aimed to answer the question whether a fructan-enriched diet could be helpful in preventing from disturbances in bone turnover caused by calcium restriction combined with ovariectomy-induced estrogen deficiency. The differences related to the kind of fructan and “matrix effect” of fructan action (form of addition) were also evaluated. Materials and method. The study was conducted using sham-operated (control groups) or ovariectomized (OVX) rats fed a calcium restricted diet. The treatment diets contained one of three fructan sources – Jerusalem artichoke, yacon and Beneo Orafti Synergy1 – added alone or as an ingredient of strawberry sorbet, all in the amount providing 8% fructans. Analyses of biological material included: serum Ca, Mg and P concentrations, alkaline phosphatase activity (ALP), osteocalcin (OC) and C-telopeptide degradation products from type I collagen (CTX). Densitometric parameters of femora were also assayed. Results. Among markers of bone turnover, the ALP activity depended both on the kind of fructan and the form of addition. The highest value was shown in the OVX group fed a low-calcium diet, whereas administration of diet enriched with Jerusalem artichoke led to an almost 50% decrease in the value of this parameter. Dietary fructans also lowered the OC level. Feeding rats with diet containing sorbet enriched in yacon or Jerusalem artichoke resulted in a decrease of CTX, compared to the diet containing yacon alone or fructan formulation in both forms No significant differences were observed in densitometric parameters between treatment groups. Conclusions. The obtained findings suggest that fructan administration with a calcium-restricted diet might exert a positive effect on bone turnover parameters. Regarding the form of their addition, it is possible that other constituents of sorbets contributed to the fructan action. It remains open whether this impact would be significant over a longer period of time.

Opis:
Introduction. Osteoporosis, a disease associated with ovarian hormone deficiency following menopause, is the most common cause of age-related bone loss. Although an optimal intake of Ca is vital – both bone accretion during growth and maintenance in adult life – a great percentage of the population consumes far below the recommended amounts of this mineral. On the other hand, there are evidences that fructans enhance not only Ca absorption, but bone calcium as well. Objective. In the knowledge that estrogen deficiency and insufficient Ca in the diet during postmenopause cause serious problems with resultant osteoporosis, the aim of this study is to assess the effects of a diet enriched in fructan-containing sources alone, or in the “strawberry matrix”, on the structure of bone in OVX rats under calcium hypoalimentation. Materials and method. Experimental animals were female Wistar rats, sham-operated or ovariectomized. The treatment with Ca-restricted diets also contained one of the sources of fructan (Jerusalem artichoke, yacon, Beneo Orafti Synergy1), in the amount providing 8% of fructans. Femur architecture of rats was assessed by tomography and Ca content by the AAS method. Results. Ovariectomy led to a significant decrease in femoral Ca content, total mineral content and bone density of rats. This study shows that a diet containing inulin-type fructan (especially as a component of strawberry product) improved bone quality (i.e. increase in Ca content in femur, total density in middle part of bone, as well as decrease of endosteal circumference) in OVX rats under calcium hypoalimentation. Conclusions. These findings suggest that a fructan-enriched diet could be potentially useful for postmenopausal osteoporosis. It is important to determine an optimal dietary level of fructan with the long-term goal of developing a dietary strategy in osteoporosis prevention.

Opis:
The middle and upper parts of the Skały Fm, Early to Middle Givetian in age, were investigated in four sections at Miłoszów Wood in the Łysogóry Region (northern region of the Holy Cross Mountains, central Poland). The dating is based on conodonts (Polygnathus timorensis Zone to the later part of the Polygnathus varcus/Polygnathus rhenanus Zone; early Polygnathus ansatus Zone cannot be excluded) and spores (Ex1–2 subzones) and, coupled with cartographic analysis and geophysical investigation, allows correlation within the strongly faulted succession. Significant lateral facies variations within the carbonate ramp depositional system in comparison with the better studied Grzegorzowice–Skały section, about 3 km distant, are documented, thanks to conodont-based correlation of both successions. Foraminifers, fungi, sponges, rugose and tabulate corals, medusozoans, microconchids and cornulitids, polychaetes (scolecodonts), molluscs (bivalves, rostroconchs, and gastropods), arthropods (trilobites and ostracods), bryozoans, hederelloids, ascodictyids, brachiopods, echinoderms (mostly crinoids, rare echinoids, holuthurians, and ophiocistoids), conodonts, fish, plants (prasinophytes, chlorophycophytes, and land plant spores), and acritarchs are present. Brachiopods are the most diverse phylum present (68 species), other richly represented groups are bryozoans and echinoderms; in contrast, cephalopods and trilobites are low in diversity and abundance. The muddy, middle to outer ramp biota (200 marine taxa, including 170 species of marine animals, 22 photoautotrophs, 6 forams) represents a mixture of allochthonous shallower-water communities (upper BA3), including storm- and possibly tsunami-affected coral mounds, and autochthonous deep-water soft-bottom brachiopod (e.g., Bifida–Echinocoelia) communities (BA 4–5). The richness and diversity of the Miłoszów biota is relatively high, comparable with other approximately coeval pre-Taghanic ecosystems during the Devonian climatic deterioration (cooling). Preliminary data indicate that in the Holy Cross Mountains, no large-scale replacement of brachiopod (and probably many other benthic ones, like crinoids) communities took place between the Early–Middle Givetian and the Early Frasnian, in contrast to the demise of the Hamilton/Upper Tully fauna in the Appalachian Basin. Such a similarity of pre- and post-Taghanic faunas does not exclude the occurrence of environmental perturbations and transient community turnovers, caused by immigrations during the Taghanic Biocrisis, but evidences the successful recovery of the indigenous biota.
