Opis:
The aim of the study was to compare some life strategy traits of individuals of Purple Loosestrife Lythrum salicaria within three meadow populations existing under various habitat conditions. The study attempted to answer the following questions: Do different habitat conditions affect the biomass allocation between particular organs of individuals? Can the individuals belonging to different populations of the same species realise their own unique reproductive strategy, in other words, can their reproductive effort represent various levels? In the case of L. salicaria the reproductive effort, measured by the participation of inflorescence biomass in the biomass of aboveground parts of genets, exhibits similar values (14.2-15.1%) in all the study populations, despite their habitat conditions. This fact proves that at the population level, the reproductive effort is relatively stable. Great differences are visible in the case of particular individuals within each of the populations. Specific genets in a population, depending on the habitat microstructure and the biotic relations with other individuals both of their own and other species, may realise their own reproductive strategies, being a part of their life strategies.
U L. salicaria wysiłek reprodukcyjny mierzony udziałem biomasy kwiatostanów w biomasie części nadziemnych genetów przyjmuje zbliżone wartości (14,2-15,1%) we wszystkich badanych populacjach, niezależnie od warunków środowiskowych.

Opis:
The influence of thermal inversions on the variability of sulphur dioxide concentrations in calendar winter (December to February) was assessed based on a 10-year measurement series from 2004/2005 to 2013/2014. The data on daily sulphur dioxide concentrations were obtained from four urban air quality measurement stations operated in a measurement network by the Regional Inspectorate of Environmental Protection (WIOŚ) in Wrocław, and from the ARMAAG Foundation in Gdańsk. The occurrence of thermal inversions was traced based on data from aerological measurements conducted twice daily (at 00:00 and 12.00 UTC) at two aerological stations, in Wrocław and in Łeba. This allowed for determine the thickness of the surface (lower) inversion layers, as well as the height of the base and thickness of the first (the lowest) layer in the free atmosphere (elevated). The effect of inversion on the variability of daily SO2 concentrations was investigated using single linear regression at statistical significance levels of α = 0.05 and α = 0.01. The conditions of dispersion of the pollutants in the lower troposphere in the winter seasons from 2004/2005 to 2013/2014 were predominantly determined by the elevated inversion layers, which occurred in both regions at comparable frequency of almost 90%, both in daytime and nighttime. Surface inversions were recorded significantly less frequently, mostly at night. The data also showed that the thickness of inversion layers and the height at which they formed affected the concentration of SO2, although the statistically significant role of elevated inversions manifested itself at both times of the 24-hour period, whereas the role of surface inversions was evident only at night.

Opis:
In this research, the quality of manufactured cast metal-ceramic foams (manufactured using blowing gas) was tested. The causes responsible for defect formation in the composite foams and their consequences were analyzed using the FMEA (Failure Mode and Effects Analysis) method, which is a useful tool for minimizing losses caused by low product quality. This method involves analytically determining correlations between the cause and consequences of potential product defects, and it takes into account the criticality factor (risk). The FMEA analysis showed that pore breaks were the most "critical defect" (with the highest number of effects on the product, the Risk Priority Number, affecting the quality of the composite foam). The second most critical defect was discontinuities in the foam frame structure. Destruction or damage to the foam structure (although very rare) deprived the composite foam of its primary function, which is to reinforce the product. The third most critical defect was non-uniform foam pore size.

Opis:
Two ion cyclotron range of frequencies (ICRF) heating scenarios, proposed for the non-activated half-B0 phase of ITER in hydrogen plasmas, were investigated on the JET tokamak. This paper we present a detailed study of the impurity content in plasma when the fundamental H and the 2nd harmonic 3He ICRF heating scenarios are realized. The ICRF conditions for those heating scenarios on ITER - i.e. the frequency of 42 MHz for the fundamental H and 53 MHz for the 2nd harmonic 3He heating, and the magnetic field B0 = 2.65 T – were closely reproduced in dedicated experiments on JET. The impurity content of the plasma was determined by means of the spectroscopy in the VUV range. The release of C and Ni impurities during the ICRF heating is presented as a function of the total ICRF heating power supplied in those heating scenarios. The contribution of the Ni impurity to the effective charge of the plasma, Zeff, and the plasma dilution are estimated. We find that for the 3He ICRF heating scenario the impurity content and the plasma energy loss through radiation was higher than for the fundamental hydrogen heating scenario.

Opis:
Hydroxyapatite and bioglasses are important bioactive materials as they exhibit direct bonding with human bone. Therefore they are used as coatings for metallic implants. The aim of the present study was to compare two types of layers: monophase hydroxyapatite (HA) and composite-type HA+BG hydroxyapatite mixed with bioglass (BG) (BG 50% of weight) during the initial stage of their interaction with cell medium. In vitro studies were performed in order to determine the effect of the investigated layers on cell response. After 3 and 7 days the behaviour of the cells grown on the above surfaces was estimated through determination of the cell adhesion (CV colorimetric assay). Cell morphology and properties of biomaterials surfaces were analysed by atomic force microscopy (AFM).

Opis:
Skin substitutes are heterogeneous group of scaffolds (natural or synthetic) and cells. We hypothesize that nanofibers with layer composition made of polylactide (PLA) and sodium hyaluronate (HA) obtained using electrospinning method are a good matrix for cell adhesion and proliferation. Methods: Optimal conditions of electrospinning of PLA and HA nanofibers to create layered compositions (PLA membrane covered with HA nonwovens) were determined by modifying parameters such as the appropriate amount of solvents, polymer concentration, mixing temperature and electrospinning process conditions. By changing the parameters, it was possible to control the diameter and properties of both polymer fibers. The spinning solution were characterized by surface tension and rheology. A scanning electron microscope (SEM) was used to determine the morphology and fiber diameters: PLA and HA. Structure of the PLA/HA nonwoven was analyzed using spectroscopy (FTIR/ATR). Biocompatibility of the nonwoven with fibroblasts (ECM producers) was assessed in the in vitro conditions. Results: The results showed that stable conditions for the formation of submicron PLA fibers were obtained using a 13% wt. solution of the polymer, dissolved in a 3:1 mixture of DCM:DMF at 45 °C. The hyaluronic fibers were prepared from a 12% wt. solution of the polymer dissolved in a 2:1 mixture of ammonia water and ethyl alcohol. All materials were biocompatible but to a different degree. Conclusions: The proposed laminate scaffold was characterized by a hydrophobic-hydrophilic domain surface with a maintained fiber size of both layers. The material positively underwent biocompatibility testing in contact with fibroblasts.
