Opis:
Introduction and Objective: The aim of this paper is to assess the level of tourist activity of pupils and students from schools in Warsaw, as well as factors influencing this level of activity. Methods: A two-part questionnaire was used that included questions related to participation in tourist trips (day, long, short, and trips abroad) and the International Physical Activity Questionnaire (IPAQ). Results: Among the analyzed factors (gender, level of school, level of physical activity), only the level of school turned out to be the factor which significantly (p=0.000) influenced the physical activity of the respondents. It was observed that tourist activity among pupils and students decreased with age. Conclusion: There is an urgent need for a systematic approach towards promoting and supporting the participation of children and young people in tourism. as well as setting examples of how to travel and rest. Carrying out intervention programmes demands the further identification of factors determining them (e.g. influence of parents’ leisure time behaviour), as well as the application of standardized research tools.

Opis:
Background. Poor health / medical contraindications are one of the most commonly declared barriers to physical activity (PA). The aim of the study is to do a quantitative assessment of this barrier in adult Poles, with a particular emphasis on incidence and accumulation in different demographic and socio-economic backgrounds. Material and methods. A representative sample of Poles aged ≥50 years, declaring sporadic PA, or none (4253 persons) was examined. To assess the frequency of health indications / medical contraindications as the primary barrier to PA, a statistical analysis was done. The impact of individual variables on individual declarations was assessed using logistic regression. Results. Poor health / medical contraindications are the second (25.0%) barrier to PA, after the age factor (26.6%). The likelihood that bad health is declared in people with lower education increases more than 2-fold (ceteris paribus) with regard to those with higher education. As for working people, it is more often evidenced (7-times) in those incapable of working than in the retired ones (4 times). Living in rural areas reduces the chances of pointing to a health barrier by 24%. Although the chances of declaring health as the barrier increase with age, in the oldest (with all other indicators ceteris paribus) it is relatively less likely to be identified, which might suggest that the elderly consider a ge itself as a barrier to activity rather than poor health. Conclusions. It is necessary to improve health education in adult Poles regarding a conscious lifestyle design, understanding diseases and honest self-assessment of one’s health. It is essential to be aware of the physiological symptoms of physical effort, the role of PA both in maintaining and improving one’s health and supporting treatment. It is particularly essential to involve in the undertaking health professionals, especially doctors, because of their knowledge and social prestige.
Wprowadzenie. Zły stan zdrowia/przeciwwskazania lekarskie to jedna z najczęściej deklarowanych barier podejmowania aktywności fizycznej (AF). Celem pracy jest ilościowa ocena wskazań tej bariery przez dorosłych Polaków, ze szczególnym uwzględnieniem częstości występowania oraz kumulacji w przekrojach demograficznych i społeczno-ekonomicznych. Materiał i metody. Wśród osób z niższym wykształceniem ryzyko jej deklarowania rośnie ponad 2-krotnie (ceteris paribus) w stosunku do osób z wykształceniem wyższym.

Introduction. The influence of infection with two species of entomopathogenic nematodes of Steinernematidae family on metabolism of glycogen and trehalose of the host was studied. Material and methods. Last instar larvae (L₇) of Galleria mellonella were experimentally infected with Steinernema affinis and S. feltiae. At 6, 12, 18 and 24 h after infection concentrations of trehalose and glycogen as well as activity of trehalase and α-amylase were determined. Results. The content of glycogen was lower in insects infected with S. feltiae than in the controls and animals infected with S. affinis. The content of trehalose was higher in insects from both infected groups than in the controls. Its concentration was slightly higher in larvae infected with S. affinis than in those infected with S. feltiae. The activity of α-amylase after infection with S. affinis was low. It was significantly higher in insects infected with S. feltiae. In animals of both infected groups, following a significant reduction at 6 h, the activity of trehalase remained at a similar level, higher than in the controls. In the paper the effects of infection with (i) different species of entomopathogenic nematodes and (ii) the importance of the developmental stage of the insect-host for changes in its metabolism of glycogen and trehalose were discussed.

Opis:
Introduction and objective. The aim of this study is to evaluate the leisure time physical activity of Polish farmers in the context of meeting health-related recommendations, and to diagnose the social and economic determinants. The analysis concerned leisure and transportation activities of various intensity and sedentary time. Materials and method. Farmers (n=153) aged over 18 were selected from a representative sample of Polish society (n=2039). In order to evaluate LTPA, the long version of the IPAQ was used. Statistically significant differences between the variables were tested using non-parametric tests. The relationship between the amount of exercise recommended by the WHO and studied socio-demographic criteria was assessed using log-linear analysis. Results. The WHO health recommendations were met by 33.3% of farmers. Shares in LTPA (19.1%) and transportation (19.2%) significantly increased the chance of achieving these norms (OR=12.54 and 0.07, respectively). Along with age (≥40 years) and income (≥3000 PLN/Є750) of Polish farmers, the risk of insufficient physical activity increased. Average MET-min/week for LTPA was 299.8±583.4 and transportation – 521.2±1973.9. The average time of sitting during working days was 4.4±2.9, while it was 4.5±3.2 hrs/day during weekends. Conclusions. Health-promoting changes are necessary among Polish farmers, including an increase in the awareness of health benefits and the necessity of undertaking physically active ways of spending leisure time. It seems to be a legitimate action to develop a mini-tourist trail in the rural environment as a means of promoting physical activity also among women aged over 40, and from lower income groups, who are especially threatened by inactivity.

Background. In the face of unrelenting civilization threats and social challenges, the dynamic development of wellness & spa centers is observed. The aim of this work is an analysis to determine whether the 100 best Polish spa hotels satisfy the requirements of this type of company in light of terminology put forward by the International Spa Association (ISPA) and the European Spas Association (ESPA). Material and methods. Definitions put forward by ISPA and ESPA form the basis of assessment in this study. A method of diagnostic survey was applied. Results. According to the ESPA, only 41% of spas can actually be classified as such, compared to 61% according to ISPA. As many as 22% of the hotels surveyed do not meet the requirements of such enterprises for either ESPA or ISPA. Inconsistent definitions of ESPA and ISPA lead to chaos in the wellness & spa market. Conclusions. It is necessary to develop a Polish definition which clearly defines the criteria for the classification of spa facilities and the possibility of their verification from the point of view of quality and compliance with planned standards.

Activity of hydrolases during the third and fourth larval stage of Anisakis simplex was identified by applying the API ZYM test method. In A. simplex larvae the activity of phosphatases was high, particularly that of acid phosphatase (40 nmol/mg-'). Among esterases lack of activity of lipase (Cj 4) is worth noticing while the activity of esterases (C4) and (Cg) was high. The activity of those later two enzymes was higher in L larvae than in Ly larvae. The highest activity in the subclass of glucosidases was recorded for B-fucosidase and N-acetyl-B-glucosaminidase. A higher activity in L3 larvae than in Ly larvae was recorded for: B-glucuronidase and N-acetyl-B-glucosaminidase (2-fold) and B-fucosidase (3-fold). Differently the activity of B-galactosidase and B-glucosidase was higher in L4 larvae than in L3 larvae. The tests did not show activity of o-galactosidase, 8-glucosidase and amannosidase on both larval forms.

Introduction. A vital role in health maintenance and the prevention of non-communicable chronic diseases is played by an adequate level of physical activity. In recent decades, numerous guidelines have been developed to determine the criteria of physical activity levels that are essential to obtain overall health benefits. Objective. The aim of the presented study was evaluation of the physical activity of adult members of non-governmental organizations promoting active lifestyle, in compliance with recommendations of the World Health Organization and the American College of Sport Medicine. Materials and method. The study examined 95 adult members of non-governmental organizations (NGOs) promoting an active lifestyle in the Silesian Province of Western Poland. In order to make a comprehensive physical activity evaluation (including all criteria of most complex health-recommendations), both an objective tool (ActiGraph GT3X) and a subjective tool (Daily Physical Activity Log) were used. Results. Compliance with a weekly total time of moderate to vigorous aerobic efforts were observed in 47% of women and 44% of men with regard to WHO guidelines, and in 29% of women and 23% of men, respectively, regarding ACSM guidelines. The criterion for the frequency of strength exercises was met by 24% of women and 15% of men. Flexibility exercises level was adequate in 35% of women and 28% of men. Conclusions. The most frequent cause of non-meeting the criteria of the above- mentioned organisations were insufficient frequency of the weekly resistance (strength) exercises and flexibility exercises. There is a need to create public health programmes based on the complex physical activity recommendations, including all types of physical efforts (aerobic, strength, flexibility), and to emphasise the fact that meeting all of them is essential to obtain overall health benefits.
