Opis:
As a result of torrential rains during 1997 in Poland, the worst disaster in the country in the written history, six voivodships in the Odra River Basin were partly flooded. Damage to urban, rural and hydrotechnical infrastructures were extensive. To asses the extent of flood and evaluate damage a great number of aerial photographs have been taken. Due to unfavourable weather condition they covered only a part of the Odra catchment. Landsat, Spot and IRS satellites took a few images. Only microwave images acquired by ERS-2 satellite were available for the whole flooded area. The interpretation of images taken by ERS satellite resulted in delimitation of maximum extents of water in the Odra River Basin. This information created a new thematic layer in the GIS database. Analytical GIS tools enabled determination of the area affected with flood in particular administration division, as well as computing the area of each land use category covered with water

Opis:
One of the more important elements of spatial information infrastructure is the organisational structure defining the obligations and dependencies between stakeholders that are responsible for the infrastructure. Many SDI practitioners and theoreticians emphasise that its influence on the success or failure of activities undertaken is significantly greater than that of technical aspects. Being aware of the role of the organisational structure in the creating, operating and maintenance of spatial information infrastructure (SII), Polish legislators placed appropriate regulations in the Spatial Information Infrastructure Act, being the transposition of the INSPIRE Directive into Polish Law. The principal spatial information infrastructure stakeholders are discussed in the article and also the scope of cooperation between them. The tasks and relationships between stakeholders are illustrated in UML, in both the use case and the class diagram. Mentioned also are the main problems and obstructions resulting from imprecise legal regulations.
Jednym z istotniejszych komponentów infrastruktury informacji przestrzennej (IIP) jest struktura organizacyjna określająca m.in. zależności pomiędzy organizacjami tworzącymi infrastrukturę. Wielu praktyków i teoretyków SDI podkreśla, że wpływ aspektów organizacyjnych na sukces lub porażkę SDI jest dużo większy niż elementów technicznych. Mając świadomość znaczącej roli struktury organizacyjnej w tworzeniu, funkcjonowaniu i zarządzaniu infrastrukturą przestrzenną w Polsce, legislatorzy umieścili odpowiednie zapisy w ustawie z dnia 4 marca 2010 r. o infrastrukturze informacji przestrzennej, będącej transpozycją dyrektywy INSPIRE do prawa polskiego. W artykule omówiono strukturę organizacyjną IIP w Polsce, podając (m.in. w postaci diagramów UML) obowiązki poszczególnych organów administracji zaangażowanych w jej budowę i rozwój, a także omówiono zależności i zakres współpracy pomiędzy poszczególnymi jednostkami. Wspomniano także o problemach jakie wynikają z niezbyt precyzyjnych zapisów ustawy o IIP.

Opis:
Polish spatial data infrastructure dates back 2010, the year when the Spatial Information Infrastructure Act transposing INSPIRE Directive entered into force. The present study provides valuable insight into the current status of Polish spatial data infrastructure (PSDI) as well as lessons learnt from so far efforts in implementing the principles and provisions of the INSPIRE Directive. Particular respect is given to policy, interoperability of data as well as cooperation between actors involved in PSDI establishment and maintenance. Data managed by the Surveyor General (SG), perceived as a backbone of a spatial data infrastructure, are of special importance. Finally, some conclusions and recommendations for further developments are given to foster SDI implementation in Poland. Results of the analysis clearly show that Polish spatial data infrastructure is in line with INSPIRE, and in a half of way being fully operational.

Population data are generally provided by state census organisations at the predefined census enumeration units. However, these datasets very are often required at userdefined spatial units that differ from the census output levels. A number of population estimation techniques have been developed to address these problems. This article is one of those attempts aimed at improving county level population estimates by using spatial disaggregation models with support of buildings characteristic, derived from national topographic database, and average area of a flat. The experimental gridded population surface was created for Opatów county, sparsely populated rural region located in Central Poland. The method relies on geolocation of population counts in buildings, taking into account the building volume and structural building type and then aggregation the people total in 1 km quadrilateral grid. The overall quality of population distribution surface expressed by the mean of RMSE equals 9 persons, and the MAE equals 0.01. We also discovered that nearly 20% of total county area is unpopulated and 80% of people lived on 33% of the county territory.

The Canadian goldenrod Solidago canadensis (L) is an invasive species in Poland. It occurs both in habitats only weakly impacted by anthropogenic factors as well as in habitats subjected to intensive transformations by humans. The aim of this study was to characterise the habitats of S. canadensis in Mińsk Mazowiecki and in out-of-town areas. It has been shown, based on an analysis of the principal soil properties, that the sites where S. canadensis was found had clayey-sandy soil and a C/N ratio indicative of medium and high soil degradation. Canadian goldenrod was found at sites with a diverse content of phosphorus, calcium and magnesium in soil, as well as a diverse soil pH, indicative of a strongly acidic, acidic and alkaline character of the soil.

Opis:
The idea of the study was to describe short-term and seasonal variations in the composition and abundance of zooplankton in the coastal area of the Gulf of Gdańsk at two shore stations and the influence of selected environmental factors (temperature, salinity, wind velocity) on it. The studies were based on material collected in the shallow waters of the Gulf of Gdańsk from stations located by the Marine Promenade (Bulwar Nadmorski) in Gdynia and the pier in Sopot. Samples were collected in 2001 mainly at weekly intervals using an open-type plankton net. Environmental parameters were measured at the same time. The zooplankton at the Gdynia and Sopot stations consisted of 30 taxa; Rotatoria, Copepoda and meroplankton were dominants. There was a much higher percentage of Rotatoria and a lower percentage of meroplankton at Sopot than at Gdynia. Considerable differences were apparent in the numbers of particular groups of zooplankton at these stations in the same periods. Simpson’s biodiversity index, here based on the zooplankton of the shallow waters off Gdynia and Sopot, was relatively high most of the time. Diversity of mesozooplankton was greatest in July and October. There was a significant correlation between the abundance of mesozooplankton and environmental factors in the case of cladoceran and polychaete larvae. Frequent studies at stations located close to each other illustrate the highly dynamic range of variations occurring in the coastal area: the concentrations of particular organisms fluctuated very considerably from one week to another, even by a factor of several dozen. Nevertheless, the statistically mean numbers of zooplankton at both stations are comparable.

Opis:
The Solidago canadensis (Canada goldenrod) species is an invasive plant in Europe and Asia. It grows mainly in anthropogenic environments, including those with a high content of heavy metals in soil. Goldenrod is also a honey plant, and its inflorescences and leaves are used in herbal medicine. The aim of the study was to determine the content of metals: Mg, Mn, Cu and Zn, in inflorescences and leaves of S. canadensis and in water extracts prepared from them. Material for the research was obtained in Poland. The content of the metals was determined by atomic absorption spectrometry. It was found that leaves of S. canadensis contained more Mg and Zn, but less Cu compared with inflorescences. The content of the metals in water extracts was proportional to their content in the raw material, except the content of Mn in leaves. Among the metals studied, the highest extraction of Cu and Mg was noted in infusions of leaves and inflorescences, while Zn achieved the highest extraction in infusions of inflorescences. Mn was extracted to the least extent both in leaves and inflorescence infusions. Infusions of goldenrod leaves provided similar amounts of Mg, Cu and Zn as tea infusions. Infusions of inflorescences provided more Cu and Zn than infusions of chamomile flowers. Considering the use of S. canadensis in phytotherapy, water extracts from goldenrod leaves and inflorescences had a negligible share of the analysed metals (on average about 1% or less) in the recommended daily allowances (RDAs).

Selection of L. bulgaricus and S. thermophilus strains for yogurt starters was based on the growth, acidifying activity, sensory properties of acidified milk and antagonistic activity against E. coli and S. aureus. All strains investigated exhibited good growth, acidifying activity and organoleptic properties. However, they varied much regarding antibacterial activity. Most of L. bulgaricus strains were bactericidic against E. coli and S. aureus while the others only slightly inhibited their growth. S. thermophilus strains inhibited the growth of staphylococci reducing totally or partially their population, while they showed only very weak antagonism against E. coli. Twenty four L. bulgaricus strains with bactericidic properties against E. coli and S. aureus and fourteen S. thermophilus strains bactericidic against S. aureus were selected for yogurt starters.

Opis:
The aim of this paper is to determine the current biological state of life in the pelagic zone of the Gulf of Gdańsk in relation to the planned start-up of an underwater outfall which will discharge sewage from the Gdańsk–Wschód (Gdańsk–East) sewage treatment plant. The plankton material was collected during two research cruises in July and October 1998. The samples were taken at 15 stations in four profiles located near Wyspa Sobieszewska (Sobieszewo Island), perpendicular to the coastline. Both the taxonomic and numerical structure of phytoplankton and zooplankton were typical of the coastal area of the Gulf of Gdańsk. The species diversity depends on hydrological conditions, mainly input from the River Wisła (Vistula). The abundance and biomass of phytoplankton in 1998 were several times lower than in 1994 and 1995 in the area off Górki Wschodnie, the profile located closest to the planned construction site. This could have been caused by generally lower temperatures in 1998 in comparison to previous years. In the investigated area only traces of algal eutrophication indicator species were noted. However, potentially toxic species were confirmed and were most abundant near the Wisła mouth. The highest concentrations of pelagic fauna occur in the shallowest area closest to the shoreline. Long-term observations of the dynamics of the variations in abundance and species composition indicate the increasing significance of one particular species – Acartia bifilosa.

Opis:
The properties of hyaluronic acid used for treatment of acute and chronic joint disease are known for many years and this compound is widely used both in humans and animals. To obtain a therapeutic effect of a certain drug, the appropriate concentration in the target organ or tissue is important. The application of labeled compounds is one of the frequently applied techniques to estimate drug penetration into the skin and other body tissues or organs. The aim of the study was to evaluate the penetration of hyaluronic acid labeled with I-131 through the skin and its distribution within the knee joint and other internal organs in rabbits after a topical application of an ointment containing hyaluronic acid. The experiment was performed on 22 albino rabbits divided into control and examined groups. Fifteen rabbits were exposed to the multicomponent ointment containing hyaluronic acid labeled with I-131. Time of exposure was 48 hours. Hyaluronate penetrated to a high degree into the examined tissues. No significant differences in terms of leg tissue activity were observed between a leg tissue exposed to labeled ointment and that unexposed, suggesting that after topical administration, the active component of the ointment is delivered to the joint via the blood stream. Hyaluronate applied topically penetrates through the skin into the rabbit tissues and organs and into the joint fluid of both legs (exposed and not exposed). This route of administration seems to be useful for this drug delivery and allows to avoid unnecessary side effects.
