Opis:
The aim of this work was to assess the content of selenium in cow milk served in milk machines in Szczecin in accordance to a season. The research material included samples of milk collected in 5 milk machines located in Szczecin. The study was targeted to the evaluation of selenium content in accordance to a season. The mean content of selenium in milk from milk machines was diversified in a particular seasons and ranged from 0.013 to 0.034 µg · ml–1. The mean selenium content in cow milk from milk machines was 0.023 µg/ml. The lowest level of selenium was noted in summer (0.013 µg · ml–1), whereas the highest was found in autumn (0.034 µg · ml–1). No statistically significant differences were observed between the content of selenium in milk in winter and spring but in case of other seasons the noted differences were significant. Our study has shown that a particular attention has to be paid on the content of selenium in cow milk in summer, as in 72.22% of the tested samples the level of Se was marginal, and in 27.78% the level was deficient. Low concentration of selenium in cow milk in summer indicates that the animals residue in an area poorly supplied in this element. Thus, it is particularly relevant to introduce an early-diagnostics program evaluating the levels of selenium in dairy cattle and showing the possible need of selenium supplementation in cows.

Opis:
The objective of the study was to determine selenium content in selected organs (liver, kidney) of wild boars from different regions of Poland. Materials for the study were obtained from 28 sites located in 16 provinces of Poland. Selenium concentrations in organs were determined using spectrofluorometric methods after wet mineralization in HNO3 and HClO4 mixture. Mean selenium concentrations in the investigated wild boars from Poland were 0.230 μg/g wet weight in the liver and 1.327 μg/g w.w. in the kidneys. Hepatic and nephric Se concentrations ranged from 0.036-0.626 μg/g w.w. and 0.322-4.286 μg/g w.w., respectively. Selenium concentrations in the wild boars differed considerably according to geographical location. Concentrations of selenium were highest in wild boars from south-eastern provinces and lowest in animals from northern provinces. Most of Poland’s area is environmentally deficient in this trace element, as evidenced by marginal selenium levels in the organs of the wild boars.

Opis:
The objective of the study was to determine selenium status and its distribution in the organs of free living foxes from selenium deficient areas of north-western Poland. Samples of organs harvested from 40 foxes shot during the 2008-2009 hunting seasons served as experimental material. Selenium concentration in the organs was determined spectrofluorometrically. Selenium distribution in tissues depends largely on its dietary content. Our study indicated that concentrations of selenium in the examined organs followed the order: kidney>liver>spleen>lung>heart and kidneys were the organ with the highest retention of this element. Mean selenium concentration in fox kidneys was 0.60 ± 0.15 μg/g wet weight. Several times less selenium on average was found in the liver (0.27 ± 0.09 μg/g w.w.), lungs (0.17 ± 0.06 μg/g w.w.), spleen (0.19 ± 0.06 μg/g w.w.) and heart (0.13 ± 0.05 μg/g w.w.). All the animals studied were deficient in selenium.

Opis:
Migratory smelt (Osmerus eperlanus eperlanus L.) may be perceived as a valuable indicative organism in monitoring the current environmental status and in assessment of a potential risk caused by selenium pollution. The aim of the study was to compare the selenium content in the European smelt from the Bay of Pomerania, Gdansk, and the Curonian Lagoon. The experimental material consisted of smelt samples (muscle) caught in the bays of Gdansk and Pomerania and the Curonian Lagoon (estuaries of the three largest rivers in the Baltic Sea basin: the Oder, the Vistula and the Neman). A total of 133 smelt were examined (Pomerania Bay n = 67; Gdansk Bay n = 35; Curonian Lagoon n = 31). Selenium concentrations were determined spectrofluorometrically. The data were analyzed statistically using one-way analysis of variance, calculated in Statistica PL software. The region of fish collection significantly affected the content of selenium in the examined smelts. The highest content of selenium was observed in smelt caught in the Bay of Gdansk (0.236 μg g-1 w.w.), then in smelt from the Pomeranian Bay (0.165 μg g-1 w.w.), and the lowest in smelt obtained in the Curonian Lagoon (Lithuania) (0.104 μg g-1 w.w.). The low concentrations of selenium recorded in the smelt show that there is a deficiency of this element, especially in the Curonian Lagoon (Lithuania). Geochemically, Poland and Lithuania are selenium deficient areas. Migratory smelt may serve as indicative organisms of environmental levels of selenium.

Opis:
Our objective has been to determine the effect of supplementing selenized yeast to ewes kept on a poor diet, composed of fodder from periodically flooded meadows, on the reproductive results of ewes and the serum Se concentration in lambs, their body weight and daily weight gain. The study involved 25 ewes and 25 lambs, which were divided into two groups: experimental (12 ewes) and control (13 ewes). Their lambs were also assigned to different groups. Prior to supplementation, all the sheep from the two groups were analysed for selenium concentrations in the serum. The serum selenium concentrations were determined fluorometrically using a DAN and Shimadzu RF-5001 PC spectrofluorometer. The excitation wavelength was 376 nm, while the fluorescence emission wavelength was 518 nm. All sheep in the analysed flock were found to be selenium deficient. The supplementation of selenized yeast to the experimental group caused an almost 2.5-fold increase in the serum selenium concentration in the ewes. Lambs from the experimental group were characterized by a significantly higher concentration of selenium at 7 and 14 days of age (P ≤ 0.05) compared to control lambs. Very high (P < 0.001) positive correlations were found between the serum selenium concentration in Se-supplemented ewes and the serum selenium concentration in their lambs at 7 days (rx,y = 0.779) and 14 days of age (rx,y = 0.774). The enrichment of ewes’ diet with selenized yeast contributed to an increase in the serum selenium concentration in their lambs. However, only 14.29% of lambs achieved optimum levels of Se on day 7 after birth. At day 14 after birth, none of the lambs reached the optimum Se concentration. The serum selenium concentration in sheep can be a good indicator of the body’s supply with this element in adult sheep and of a possible selenium status in their offspring. On organic farms, the selenium content in sheep should be monitored constantly.

Effect of soil contamination with diesel oil on the growth of two plant species – faba bean (Vicia faba ssp. minor) and rape (Brassica napus var. napus) was assessed. It was demonstrated that the presence of diesel oil initially reduced the number of germinating seeds and then limited their development. Negative effect of the contamination was visible also in relation to the length of the roots and above-ground plant parts. The plants stimulated the process of degradation of diesel oil, however, it occurred only in the initial incubation period.

Opis:
In this study, the issue of intensity of cargo train-induced soil vibrations is presented. Oscillations were measured in Warsaw-Rembertow location with application of set of seismic receivers. The analysis concerns the ground vibration differentiation issue, depending on considered direction of oscillation propagation plane. Statistic distribution of vibration intensity for directions in 3-D space were done. The issue of potential effect on engineering structures of recorded vibrations was raised. The impact based on Scale of Dynamic Effects standard was estimated in the article. Vibration intensity results were also compared with classification according to the Swiss Standard.

Opis:
Background: Upper gastrointestinal bleeding is a common clinical problem and one of the main reasons for emergency hospitalization. It is associated with an overall mortality rate of 2% to 13%, despite advances in medical therapy. First-choice management is conservative treatment with endoscopic hemostasis. Aim of the study: The aim of the study was to examine the epidemiological and clinical characteristics of patients with upper gastrointestinal bleeding with a focus on the course of hospitalization based on the etiology Material and methods: A retrospective study was conducted in the Department of Surgery at the 4th Military Teaching Hospital in the years 2011–2016, comprising a total of 200 hospitalizations. 150 (75%) of the study group were men, and the mean age was 63.6±15.8 years. Results: Patients most frequently presented with melena (n=105; 53.1%) and hematemesis (n=79; 40%) or coffee ground vomiting (n=57; 28.7%). . 138 (69%) of hemorrhages were managed with endoscopic hemostasis, and in 43 (21.5%) of cases conservative treatment was adequate. In 12 (6%) of cases, laparotomy was the first-choice therapy and in 7 (3.5%) cases, surgery was performed after an attempt at endoscopic treatment had failed. The sources of bleeding were: gastric ulcer – 58 (29%), duodenal ulcer – 48 (24%), esophageal varices – 31 (15.5%), gastric tumor – 15 (7.5%), Mallory-Weiss syndrome – 10 (5%), and Dieulafoy’s lesion – 3 (1.5%). 16 (8%) of the hospitalizations were fatal. Conclusions: Upper gastrointestinal bleeding still has a high mortality rate (8%). It more frequently affects men and the elderly. Gastric and duodenal ulcers are the most common etiologies of bleeding. Esophageal varices and neoplasms are also a significant source of bleeding. Despite the progress in the pharmacological treatment of peptic ulcers, the complications resulting from gastrointestinal bleeding continue to be a serious clinical problem.
