Opis:
During the last few decades, a growing demand for medical implants may be observed on the market. This is a consequence of both the increasing number of people suffering from disabilities as well as technological development. As a result of growing number of trauma injuries, orthopaedic and bone implants are one of the branches of the medical device industry showing the fastest growth opportunities. However, the commonly applied metallic implants do not exhibit total chemical stability in human body environment and hence, possess relatively poor surface properties [1]. For that reason, even the corrosion resistant metals may release degradation products and cause adverse biological response1. Consequently, surface modifications of metallic implants which enhance the biological response of the human body towards the surface of the implant are recently gaining a lot of interest. One of the most extensively studied solutions include the application of diamond-like carbon (DLC) coatings which exhibit a combination of highly desirable properties in the context of biomedical applications [2]. Furthermore, the properties of DLC coatings, such as cell behaviour and body reaction towards its surface, may be further improved by doping with various elements [3]. Therefore, the modified DLC coatings are nowadays extensively researched in terms of their possible medical applications. In the case of orthopaedic implants the enhancement of the osseointegration process is highly desirable in order to assure the proper bone-healing, what according to the literature may be achieved by the addition of titanium (Ti). The incorporation of Ti into the DLC matrix does not only promote the bone marrow cells proliferation, but also simultaneously reduces the activity of the osteoclast-like cells as indicated by Shroeder et al. [4]. Similarly, also Thorwarth et al. demonstrated that carbon coatings containing TiO exhibit promising results concerning the proliferation and differentiation of human osteoblasts [5]. Nevertheless, in spite of the numerous studies considering the biological behaviour of Ti-incorporated DLC coatings, there is lack of conclusive reports considering the biological applications of coatings deposited by a magnetron sputtering technique. Taking this into consideration, a complex biological evaluation of Ti-DLC coatings followed by their surface characteristics was performed, since surface properties have a direct role in different post-implantation reactions including protein adsorption and cell proliferation [1]. The examined coatings were deposited on two commonly applied metallic biomaterials (AISI 316 LVM steel and Ti6Al7Nb alloy) using a magnetron sputtering technique. The surface characteristics of the deposited Ti-DLC coatings included the analysis of surface morphology (SEM), chemical composition and structure (XPS, FTIR) as well as surface wettability and surface free energy (sessile drop technique and Owens-Wendt’s model). The biological assessment of the deposited coatings was based on two complementary cell proliferation and viability assays (LIVE/DEAD and XTT test) performed with the use of two different cell lines, i.e. endothelial cells line EA.hy926 and osteoblast-like cells line Saos-2. The obtained results allowed to check the influence of titanium on the biological response of two different cell lines towards the Ti-DLC coatings deposited using magnetron sputtering method as well as to correlate the obtained results with the surface properties of the investigated coatings.

The paper describes nonlinear vibrations of Euler-Bernoulli beams interacting with a periodic viscoelastic foundation. The original model equations with highly oscillating periodic coefficients are transformed using the tolerance modelling technique. Newly delivered equations have constant coefficients and describe macro-dynamics of the beam including the effect of the microstructure size. The main purpose of this paper is to propose an equivalent approximate model describing the nonlinear vibrations of a beam interacting with a periodic viscoelastic subsoil.

Vibrations of Timoshenko beams with properties periodically varying along the axis are under consideration. The tolerance method of averaging differential operators with highly oscillating coefficients is applied to obtain the governing equations with constant coefficients. The dynamics of Timoshenko beam with the effect of the cell length is described. A asymptotic model is then constructed, which is further studied in analysis of the low order natural frequencies. The proposed model is able to describe dynamics of beams made of non-slender cells.

Opis:
In this paper there are considered vibrations of Euler-Bernoulli beams with geometrical and material properties periodically varying along the axis. The basic exact equations with highly oscillating periodic coefficients are replaced by the system of averaged equations with constant coefficients. The new model is based on the tolerance modelling technique, which describes macro-dynamics of the beam including the effect of the microstructure size. The purpose of this paper is to present an approximately equivalent model, which describe vibrations of periodic beams taking into account length of the periodicity cell.

Opis:
Elastic periodic structures with variable material and geometrical properties exhibit dynamic characteristics that are investigated in this contribution. The paper is devoted to analysis of geometrically linear vibrations of Rayleigh and Timoshenko beams with cross-sections and material properties periodically varying along the longitudinal axis. The period of inhomogeneity is assumed to be sufficiently small when compared to the beam length. Equations of motion in both beam theories under consideration have highly-oscillating coefficients. In order to derive the averaged model equations with constant coefficients for vibrations, the tolerance averaging approach is applied. The method of averaging differential operators with rapidly varying coefficients is applied to obtain averaged governing equations with constant coefficients. An assumed tolerance and indiscernibility relations and the definition of slowly varying function found the applied technique. Numerical results from the tolerance Rayleigh and Timoshenko beam model equations are compared.

Opis:
The main goal of the proposed paper is to present the results of the nitrogen ion implantation effects on mechanical and corrosion properties of NiTi shape memory alloy. Local pseudoelasticity phenomena of NiTi were determined using the ultra-low load applied system. The load-penetration depth curves show that lower nitrogen fluence improves mechanical properties in the near surface layer but higher ion fluence leads to degradation of pseudoelasticity properties. Corrosion resistance of NiTi in the Ringer solution was evaluated by means of electrochemical methods. The results of potentiodynamic measurements in the anodic range for implanted NiTi indicate a decrease of passive current density range in comparison with non-treated NiTi, without any signs related to Ni release. The results of impedance measurements recorded at the corrosion potential show a capacitive behaviour for all samples without clear predominance of one of them. It can be explained by the fact that this result concerns the first stage of corrosion exposition. It is shown that nitrogen ion implantation leads to formation of modified surface of improved physicochemical properties.

Opis:
The excitation mechanism of rare-earth emission in Eu and Ce doped CaS and SrS is studied. It is proposed that the Eu and probably also Ce emission is induced by the photoionization transition of the rare-earth ion, which is followed by the carrier trapping via the excited state of the ion. At increased temperatures the efficiency of excitation is reduced. We explain this effect by the carrier emission from the excited core state of the rare-earth ion to the continuum of the conduction (valence) band states. It is also suggested that the charge transfer state of the rare-earth ion may act as the intermediate state in the carrier trapping.

Opis:
The development of haptic technology in laparoscopic simulations indicates a demand of constant upgrade of tactile feedback, which is currently considered to be unsatisfactory. Presumably, one of its causes may be insufficiently examined and described mechanical parameters of soft tissues in vivo, including liver tissue. The aim of the following work was the attempt at assessing the applicability of data from shear wave elastography in organ modelling by correlating the mechanical parameters of the liver obtained by this noninvasive method, with the mechanical parameters obtained by indentation. Methods: Each one out of 12 porcine livers, was subjected to elastography and subsequently to the indentation test. The mean Young’s modulus for each liver lobe was obtained using elastography, while in indentation Young’s moduli in three different strain ranges and maximum load were calculated. Results: Differences between mechanical parameters of lobes were not found but the parameters were calculated for different methods and strain ranges. Conclusions: The limitations of both methods prevent the unambiguous assessment of the applicability of elastography in liver modelling for laparoscopic simulations, at the presented stage of research. Nevertheless, the presented study provides a valuable introduction to the development of a methodology for testing the mechanical parameters of liver tissue.
