Opis:
This article examines the Internet’s emergent role in the claims-making process. My central premise is while Internet technology provides lay citizens with a mass mediated platform to distribute claims publically, power dynamics in the public sphere have remained relatively stable: Insiders and lobbyists continue to be powerful cultural voices; the press still functions as a cultural gatekeeper of newsworthiness; most people continue to have relatively little social authority; and the least powerful risk being completely left out of a digital society. Using the National Rifle Association (NRA) web presence as a case study, I describe the Internet as a vast collection of interconnected public cyber-arenas where problem claims are continuously disseminated, global communication is facilitated via online advocacy networks, and claimants utilize novel cyber-strategies to mobilize supporters. In doing so, I examine how cyber-arenas fundamentally differ from more static traditional claims-making arenas like television, radio, and print publication. I conclude by considering the extent to which historically powerful insider claims-making groups like the NRA are actually best positioned to succeed in a supposedly democratized new media world.

Opis:
The pyrokinin (PK) family plays a multifunctional role in an array of important physiological processes in a variety of insects. A PK active core analog containing an (E)-alkene, transPro isosteric component was evaluated in five disparate PK bioassays and/or in a recombinant PK receptor cell line, representing six different insect species. The assays included pheromone biosynthesis in the moth Heliothis peltigera, melanization in the larval Spodoptera littoralis, pupariation acceleration in the larval fly Neobellieria bullata, diapause termination in the moth Heliothis zea, and hindgut contraction in the cockroach Leucophaea maderae. This constrained analog demonstrated unselective agonist activity that approached, matched, or exceeded the activity of parent PK peptides of equal length in all six PK assays. The results provide strong evidence for the orientation of Pro and the core conformation adopted by PK neuropeptides during interaction with disparate PK receptors. A PK active core analog incorporating a second transPro motif, the dihydroimidazoline moiety, was found to demonstrate pure, selective agonism in the melanotropic bioassay, with no significant activity in three other PK bioassays. Both types of transPro isosteric analogs feature modification adjacent to the primary tissue-bound peptidase hydrolysis site that is expected to enhance biostability over natural PK peptides. The research further identifies two novel scaffolds with which to design either selective or non-selective mimetic PK analogs as potential leads in the development of environmentally favorable pest management agents capable of disrupting PK-regulated systems.

Opis:
In the years 1997-1999, studies on the periods of A. lusitanicus development and on the occurrence of its developmental stages were carried out. Dates of overwintering, mating, egg-laying, hatching and population peaks of the slug were observed on six sites located in horticultural habitats, as well as in the isolation cage, where slugs were reared. It was ascertained that A. lusitanicus has a year-long life cycle. The slug overwinters in the form of eggs or juvenile stages and rarely as adult individuals. Young slugs leave their winter shelters by the end of February. The mating period starts in the second half of July and lasts from 6 to 10 weeks. Eggs are laid from mid-August till late autumn. Slug hatching occurs in spring and autumn at the time of plant sprouting.
W latach 1997-1999 w rejonie Łańcuta prowadzono badania nad cyklem życiowym ślinika luzytańskiego - Arion lusitanicus Mah. W siedliskach upraw ogrodniczych oraz w izolatorze z hodowlą ślimaka obserwowano terminy: zimowania, kopulacji, składania jaj, wylęgania ślimaków i szczytów liczebności. Liczne pojawy A. lusitanicus przypadają wiosną i wczesną jesienią, w okresach wzrostu i wschodów roślin uprawnych najbardziej wrażliwych na żerowanie ślimaka.

Opis:
Neuropeptides are regulators of critical life processes in insects, but are subject to rapid degradation by peptidases in the hemolymph (blood), tissues and gut. This limitation can be overcome via replacement of peptidase susceptible portions of the insect neuropeptides with non-natural residues or moieties to create analogs with enhanced biostability. Two neuropeptide families, the insect kinins and insectatachykinins, stimulate gut motility and Malpighian tubule fluid secretion in certain insects but unmodified members demonstrate little or no effect when fed to pea aphids (Acyrthosiphon pisum) in an artificial diet. Nonetheless, biostable analogs developed via the strategic introduction of either bulky Aib residues and/or β-amino acids demonstrate potent antifeedant and aphicidal effects when administered orally; whereas other biostable analogs are inactive. Although the precise mechanism of action has not been delineated, the activity may be associated with disruption of the physiological processes that these neuropeptides regulate in insects. The most active of the biostable insect kinin and insectatachykinin analogs show LC50 values of 0.063 nmole/μl (LT50 = 1.68 days) and 0.0085 nmole/μl (LT50 = 1.1 days), respectively; matching or exceeding the potency of some commercially available aphicides. The biostable analogs represent important leads in the development of alternative, environmentally sound aphid control agents.

Opis:
The distribution of Arion lusitanicus Mabille and the damage caused by the slug were studied In 1993–2009. A total of 38 sites were examined, characterised in terms of location, time of appearance and density of the slug, type and size of crops affected, and degree of damage to plants. At the start of the 1990s A. lusitanicus occurred only around Rzeszów and in the Sub-Carpathian region. In 1997 it started to appear in other regions of Poland. The rate of its spread was found to have increased significantly, particularly in the past few years. The slug mainly colonises urban areas (30 sites), and much less often – other areas (8 sites). The slug densities were the greatest in cultivations. The degree of damage done by the slug varied among plant species. Brassicas, lettuce, beetroot, carrots, beans, strawberries, numerous ornamental flower plants and some weeds were the most damaged. The increase in the spread of A. lusitanicus poses a serious threat to the biodiversity of native habitats and to garden-cultivated plants.

An exceptionally preserved specimen of the extinct trigonotarbid arachnid Eophrynus prestvicii (Arachnida: Trigonotarbida) from the Late Carboniferous (Duckmantian) British Middle Coal Measures of the UK is redescribed with the help of X-ray micro-tomography (XMT). Previous work is summarised and the correct spelling of the species name confirmed. Reconstruction of the void left by the original specimen within a siderite (ironstone) nodule reveals its three-dimensional structure as well as novel details which are difficult to resolve using traditional methods of study. The pedipalps and legs can now be reconstructed almost in their entirety and we can confirm that the chelicerae hung beneath the prosoma with a backwards-directed fang. Opisthosomal segmentation is clarified: a narrow tergite 1 is followed by eight further tergites (2–9), clearly demarked by their ornamentation. In general, a much more accurate picture of the spines and tuberculation ornamenting the dorsal surface of the body was resolved. Ventrally the opisthosoma bears socalled ventral sacs and terminates in a two-segmented pygidium. Based on the XMT model, a new reconstruction of E. prestvicii is presented. Although phylogenetically unrelated, the sometimes similar-looking, spiny and tuberculate lanitorid harvestmen (Opiliones: Lanitores) offer a possible ecological model for these highly ornamented trigonotarbids.

The photocatalytic efficiency of alkali niobate-based compounds (Li, Na, K) for hydrogen generation has been investigated. The systematic study showed that the highest photocatalytic activity was observed in the case of Na/Nb2O5 catalyst which contained sodium niobate (NaNbO3) phase and that the most efficient electron donor for hydrogen generation was formic acid. In addition, the effect of organic donor (HCOOH) concentration on the amount of the evolved hydrogen was studied.

Traditional electro-optic modulators are not optimized for bandpass applications such as radio-on-fiber delivery systems due to their limited electro-optic response. This paper presents a resonant electrode structure that can be employed in optical modulator designs to enhance the electro-optic response of the modulator over a narrow frequency band, and improve the performance of optical radio systems. A simple model of the structure is developed, and experimental results validating the model and illustrating the effectiveness of the structure are presented.

Fruit species play an important role in human nutrition. For this reason, they have been culti- vated for millennia. Their cultivation and domestication have impacted species distribution considerably. Wild relatives of such species are often rare in Europe and are threatened by loss of habitat and landscape fragmentation. Knowledge of the distribution and biological characteristics of populations is crucial for further species conservation. We investigated the detailed distribution of the service tree (Sorbus domestica L.) in the White Carpathians, which represents the largest occurrence of the species at its northern distri- bution limit in Central Europe. We recorded 473 individuals in the studied region, compared their habitats, fruit type, dendrometric characteristics and the climate conditions at the sites. Our data suggest that the occurrence of the species is most likely of human origin and that the vast majority of trees grow in orchards, vineyards or on open landscape (72.7%). The comparison of fruit types has not revealed a strong pattern, although fruit types have apparently been selected by growers. Although most documented trees probably have an anthropogenic origin, they represent an important element in the landscape of Central Europe that requires protection.

The genus Taraxacum is taxonomically complicated due to apomixis. Therefore, there are significant differences in knowledge of regional Taraxacum-Floras among European countries. Similarly, some taxa are well characterised with well-known distribution, whereas some ones are known e.g. from a single locality. Taraxacum scanicum of section Erythrosperma is one of the most common microspecies of this section in Europe. Recently, this taxon was split into three microspecies. In this study we map the distribution of three described taxa of this group in Poland, i.e. T. scanicum s.s., T. prunicolor and T. cristatum. The survey showed that T. scanicum has a similar distribution as T. prunicolor in Poland. This is in contrast with the hitherto known distribution of both taxa. T. cristatum was found at a single locality that is quite distant from the distribution in southern central Europe. We also provide with new morphological characteristics of achenes and pollen for T. scanicum s.s. and T. prunicolor.

Opis:
We describe two partial dentaries of mammals from the Middle Jurassic of Scotland. They belong to the early cladotherian Palaeoxonodon ooliticus. These dentaries comprise the first specimen of P. ooliticus ever found—although its significance was initially unrecognised so it remained undescribed until now—and the most recently discovered specimen, found during fieldwork in 2017. The new specimen preserves part of the coronoid process of the dentary, previously unknown for P. ooliticus, demonstrating the presence of a deep masseteric fossa, with a prominent crest enclosing the fossa anteriorly, and a masseteric foramen, located in the masseteric fossa on the buccal surface of the dentary. On the lingual surface, the mandibular foramen is offset from the Meckel’s sulcus, and positioned below the alveolar plane. These morphologies allow an updated analysis of the phylogenetic position of P. ooliticus, confirming a sister-taxa relationship between Palaeoxonodon and Amphitherium. The position of the mandibular foramen, and the slight extension of the masseteric fossa into the body of the dentary are new autapomorphies for Palaeoxonodon.

The ecophysiological regulation of seed dormancy in perennial species and those with a varied life cycle has not been studied in detail yet. That is why an attempt has been made to determine the Cirsium arvense seed water relations during stratification and afterripening at different temperatures and germination at constant or fluctuating temperatures on the basis of the hydrotime model. The obtained results showed that breaking of the primary dormancy of achenes took place only during the first stratification month at moderate temperatures, mainly due to an increase in the average water-stress tolerance in a seed population. The induction of secondary seed dormancy during after-ripening at all temperatures resulted mostly from a substantial loss of the seeds' ability to tolerate water stress. Fluctuating temperatures affected neither seed germination nor the hydrotime model parameters. The analysis of the variations of hydrotime model parameters allows a better understanding of the physiological basis of seed dormancy relief and induction.
