Opis:
The paper focuses on machining difficult-to-cut materials where a significant component is titanium. The paper discusses a complex process of electrochemical grinding (ECG). A practical example was given by discussing the results of ECG. Selected difficult-to-cut materials, along with their typical ECG properties, were compared. In addition, the paper discusses the phenomenon of micro short-circuits constituting a form of an interference characteristic for the process. The results presented in the paper refer to the phenomenon of a micro short-circuits, i.e. the case when a rapid and uncontrolled electrical discharge occurs in the machining zone. The paper presents examples of recorded micro short-circuits and attempts a time-frequency analysis regarding the occurrence of the disturbance. To reveal the dynamics of the ECG process we applied wavelet analysis.

Opis:
Mechanical fastening techniques are used extensively in different industry fields for joining various materials in the assembly of components and structures. The use of mechanical clinching is of interest to different industries such as aerospace, automotive, packaging and domestic appliance. This, together with increasing use of light-weight materials, has produced a significant increase in the use of mechanical clinching in light-weight structures in recent years. This paper deals with the mechanical properties and fracture analysis of extensible die clinched joints in the dissimilar metal sheets combinations of titanium sheet material and aluminum sheet material. Tensile-shear tests were carried out to characterize the mechanical properties of different clinched joints made of the dissimilar metal sheets combinations. The normal hypothesis tests were performed to examine the rationality of the test data. The load-bearing capacity and failure modes of different titanium sheets clinched joints were studied. Results showed that most titanium sheets clinched joints failed in the neck fracture mode. Results also showed that the load-bearing capacity of clinch joints with titanium as upper sheets is higher than that of the clinched joints with titanium as lower sheets.

Titanium compounds in view of their physicochemical properties constitute interesting materials applied in chemical synthesis. They are used for preparation of antifungal agents as well as for production of self-cleaning coatings. Moreover, mentioned inorganic compounds are characterized by a capability of neutralizing of unpleasant odor. Those all characteristics make these substances useful in many fields. In the framework of presented research series of polymer materials modified with titanium and titanium oxide have been obtained by means of photopolymerization. In the further step, studies on such synthesized materials have been conducted with particular emphasis on determining a mechanical properties and wettability. Hardness of prepared polymers have been tested by means of Shore durometer. Based on the research it can be concluded that addition of titanium compounds to the polymer matrix resulted in the improvement of mechanical properties as well as in an increase of hydrophobicity. It is worth mentioning that it is possible to manipulate properties of the obtained compositions by the introduction of an appropriate amount of additive into their matrices.

Opis:
Drilling of rivet holes in stacked materials consisting of CFRP and Ti-6Al-4V still represents unique challenges. It is common practice to drill the material layers using one single tool. When exiting the final metallic layer, formation of a drill cap usually leads to undesirable burrs and debris, requiring manual post-processing. In this work, a drilling process to avoid drill caps is presented. This is realized using low frequency high amplitude vibration assisted drilling with defined coupling of the rotational speed and the axial oscillations. Drilling parameters and their impact on the quality of the drilled hole in the metallic layer are also investigated. It is found that drill tip geometries and process parameters need to be tuned together to achieve a stable and repeatable process for drill cap avoidance. A highly sensorized experimental setup with multi-sensor systems including high-speed and thermal imaging was used for process evaluation.

Opis:
Using the products derived from agricultural wastes as low-cost adsorbent materials to remove organic or inorganic contaminants would be ideal, as these materials are readily available in many countries. This study aimed to prepare environmentally friendly adsorbents made from nanocomposite OPBA / Bentonite / TiO2. The coprecipitation method was used in preparing OPBA, and CTAB surfactant was added in bentonite preparation. Meanwhile, the manufacture of TiO2 was carried out using the sol-gel method. Characterization was done by XRD, FTIR, SEM, and BET. The adsorbent spectra did not show a significant shift in absorption where the O-H bonds were becoming weaker due to the presence of TiO2 in the interlayer of bentonite. Another possibility is due to the influence of calcination and heating. The O-H groups of H2O are hydroxylated and dehydrated from within between layers. The formation of the composite OPBA/TiO2/Bentonite does not change the crystallinity of TiO2 significantly. This proves that there is no decrease in photocatalyst activity after the addition of OPBA and bentonite. The morphology of the whole sample has a flake-like structure that has pores. The addition of OPBA into Bentonite/TiO2 causes a decrease in the specific surface area of the sample.

Każda nowa kombinacja materiałowa wymaga odpowiedniej adaptacji technologii poprzez dobór właściwych parametrów spajania i często odpowiednio zmodyfikowanych nowych MW. Opracowano technologię wybuchowego łączenia stopów Ti6Al4V i AA2519 w różnych wariantach konstrukcyjnych.

cutting machining and calculation model
Opis:
Titanium alloy and nickel alloy are mainly used for several aeronautical parts due to their high strength and durability at high temperature. However, thermal conductivity of these materials are very low and most of the heat generated during cutting are concentrately conducted into the cutting tool. Therefore, the tool become extremely high temperature resulting shorter tool life. In this paper, a method for calculating the optimum cutting condition for cutting low thermal conductivity materials such as titanium alloy and nickel alloy is developed and evaluated. The temperatures on the cutting tool tip for various combination of tools and work piece materials were calculated by dynamic FEM simulation and the estimation tool for optimum cutting condition is created based on these results. The amount of heat flow and the temperature on the cutting tool were calculated based on cutting theory. Then, optimum cutting conditions for those materials were estimated by newly developed program. The method was finally evaluated by several experiments. It is concluded from the results that (1) The developed program is applicable for estimation of optimum cutting conditions regarding titanium alloy and nickel alloy. (2) Titanium alloy (Ti6Al4V) can be machined with longer tool life using estimated optimum cutting condition.

Titanium carbonitride (TiC0.5N0.5) micron powders were synthesized in reactions of titanium with zinc dicyanide: Zn(CN)2 + 4Ti → 4TiC0.5N0.5 + Zn. The reactions are sufficiently exothermic to propagate in the reactant mixture to form a self-sustaining, high-temperature synthesis (SHS). The final product was separated and the only byproduct (zinc) was removed by dissolution in dilute hydrochloric acid. The use of zinc dicyanide as the source of carbon and nitrogen causes the titanium carbonitride to contain only these elements in an atomic ratio of one. The reaction temperature can be easily reduced by the addition of zinc powder to the green mixture. Synthesis in the presence of zinc yields TiC0.5N0.5 powders consisting of round-shaped and unagglomerated particles.

Opis:
Metallic materials are important for load-bearing bone implants. The osteointegration of these implants can be improved by appropriate surface modifications. Therefore, we present here a study of the cell growth on titanium surfaces modified with films created from gold microparticles. These particles in the form of microplates or polyhedral microcrystals were deposited on titanium plates from ethanol solutions, dried and annealed with a hydrogen flame. Some samples were additionally modified by polyethylene imine. The materials engendered from these modifications were used to investigate the adhesion and growth of human osteoblast-like MG-63 cells on these surfaces in the DMEM medium with 10% of fetal bovine serum. One day after seeding, the highest number of initially adhered cells was found on the surfaces modified by both types of gold microparticles. This trend was the same three and seven days after seeding. The numbers of cells on pure Ti and Ti modified only with gold particles were significantly higher than on samples which were modified with polyethylene imine. The cell spreading areas projected on the materials were significantly larger in cells on the samples with polyethylene imine modification. However, the shape of these cells was mostly rounded or star-like with thin and long protrusions, while on the materials without polyethylene imine, it was mostly polygonal. The cell proliferation activity was estimated from XTT test, based on the activity of mitochondrial enzymes. This test showed that the proliferation activities of osteoblast-like MG-63 cells of the 3rd and 7th days of the experiment were more pronounced on the samples modified only by gold microparticles. Immunofluorescence showed that the focal adhesion plaques containing vinculin and the fibers containing β-actin were most apparent, more numerous and more brightly stained in cells on Ti modified by gold microplates and gold polyhedral microcrystals, especially in comparison with the corresponding samples modified with polyethylene imine (Fig. 1). Thus, it can be concluded that the modification of titanium samples by both types of gold microparticles enhanced the adhesion and growth of MG 63 cells.

This paper discusses technical problems related with casting of titanium alloys in centrifugal vacuum furnaces. The potentials of an analysis of the centrifugal casting process carried out in the Flow3D software CFD (Computational Fluid Dynamics) were presented. Simulations were carried out on a model set, which enables casting of two connecting rods for an I.C. engine. Changes in the mould filling process were examined for the three selected spinning velocities of the casting arm. The ranges of the metal flow velocity in mould were calculated as well as metal pressure in mould after reaching a predetermined spinning velocity. The results and the adopted mould geometry enabled determination of the magnitude of stress occurring in mould at the time of filling it with liquid titanium alloy. The paper presents a methodology for testing of the ceramic material strength using a four-point loading arrangement. The strength of the ceramic material was determined on samples heated at different temperatures. The obtained results enabled a thesis to be formulated that for pouring of moulds in a centrifugal vacuum furnace, the layered foundry ceramic moulds can be safely used, and the use of moulds that will provide the directional solidification of metal should be possible as well.

The aim of the investigations described in this article is to present a selective laser sintering and melting technology to fabricate metallic scaffolds made of pristine titanium and titanium Ti6Al4V alloy powders. Titanium scaffolds with different properties and structure were manufactured with this technique using appropriate conditions, notably laser power and laser beam size. The purpose of such elements is to replace the missing pieces of bones, mainly cranial and facial bones in the implantation treatment process. All the samples for the investigations were designed in CAD/CAM (3D MARCARM ENGINEERING AutoFab (Software for Manufacturing Applications) software suitably integrated with an SLS/SLM system. Cube-shaped test samples dimensioned 10×10×10 mm were designed for the investigations using a hexagon-shaped base cell. The so designed 3D models were transferred to the machine software and the actual rapid manufacturing process was commenced. The samples produced according to the laser sintering technology were subjected to chemical processing consisting of etching the scaffolds’ surface in different chemical mediums. Etching was carried out to remove the loosely bound powder from the surface of scaffolds, which might detach from their surface during implantation treatment and travel elsewhere in an organism. The scaffolds created were subjected to micro- and spectroscopic examinations
