The author performs an analysis of „theological places” („loci theologici”), as the basis on which leisure theology can be developed. These are: time theology (a linear concept of time, which means that time is a gift to man, if properly used), freedom theology (freedom not as a discharge from obligations but as the possibility to do good), new creation theology (renewal made by the redemptive work of Christ), joy theology (joy of gifts of nature, community with other person, being granted God’s grace), feast theology (time given to a man in order that he could turn to supernatural matters). The author develops ‘rest theology’ extensively as one of the fundamental forms of spending free time. He searches for sources in numerous biblical texts, where this term has been used. Furthermore, he interprets, among others, how to understand God’s rest after he created the world, and how his repose becomes an example to follow for a human being. Moreover, the author explains what the final repose is to be for a person, and how man, living on earth, anticipates an eschatological rest.

Opis:
An important help in finding the right place for the liturgy in theology and the manner of practicing theology is the new document of the Congregation for the Clergy The Gift of the Priestly Vocation. Ratio Fundamentalis Institutionis Sacerdotalis issued on  December 16, 2016. This document provides a new order for the subjects taught in seminaries. Sacred Scripture is put in the first place as the soul of theology (Dei Verbum 24). It is followed immediately by the study of the sacred liturgy, which “must be considered a fundamental discipline.” This is because Scripture and the liturgy constitute a living theology, meaning that they are the first and primary locus for all of theology. The fact that the liturgy immediately follows Sacred Scripture is also influenced by a new, in-depth understanding of the liturgy found in the Catechism of the Catholic Church and among contemporary theologians (J. Corbon, A.M. Triacca, A. Schmemann, J. Ratzinger) and a deeper connection of the liturgy with Divine Revelation and its transmission. The author of the article recognizes the particular significance of liturgical theology focused on the joint presentation of the three components of the liturgy, which are the salvific mystery of God, the liturgical celebration and the Christian life. Liturgical theology can be done from the perspective of each of these elements of the liturgy (Mysterium-Actio-Vita). Liturgical theology is the most perfect fulfillment of the liturgical perspective of theology.

Fundamental theology as a discipline and academic center conducting research as well as didactic and organizational activity has existed at the John Paul II Catholic University of Lublin since its beginning, first as the Department of Fundamental Theology (1918–20), then the Section of Fundamental Theology (1920–99), and since 1999 as the Institute of Fundamental Theology. As it developed, the center began to take the form of a scientific school, the Lublin School of Fundamental Theology. Its foundations were laid by Rev. Edward Kopeć. Subsequently, it was developed by, among others, Rev. Stanisław Nagy, Rev. Romuald Łukaszyk, Rev. Henryk Zimoń (religious scholar), and especially by Rev. Marian Rusecki (a student of Rev. E. Kopeć), the main co-founder of the school and its most prolific author, whose scientific achievements are the department’s showcase and have influenced contemporary Polish fundamental theology. During his time, especially at the beginning of the 21st century, the school reported its greatest scientific and organizational achievements. Currently, it is continually being developed by Rev. M. Rusecki’s students who work at the Institute of Fundamental Theology and its graduates working in other centers. This article presents the scientific characteristics (historical outline, features and main trends) of the Lublin School of Fundamental Theology (Section 1) and its most important achievements (Section 2): the main publications, organizational achievements as well as national and international cooperation.

The article aims at considering two general criticisms often formulated against the natural theology. First criticism is based on the thesis that the conclusions of the natural theology are not adequate with the religious beliefs of non-philosophers. It is widely known as opposition between God of Religion and God of Philosophers. One can find that argument in the writings of Blaise Pascal. I’m arguing for the thesis, that the natural theologian cannot fulfill the criteria given by the proponents of this argument. This is because the argument of the natural theology cannot contains the premises taken from the Revelation. If the argument of the natural theology would contain the premises taken from the Revelation, then it would be the argument of religion. But philosopher of religion (natural theologian) can’t do this, if he wants to formulate an philosophical argument. The second criticism is based on the notion of a rational person. In the light of this argument, the natural theology is successful only, if every rational person will accept the conclusion “God exist”. I’m trying to show that there is no philosophical argument that can guarantee it’s acceptance by some rational persons. The acceptance of the conclusion of the argument of the natural theology is a matter of personal decision. There is no logical argument, which can “force” rational persons (rational subjects) to accept it’s conclusion. But if this is true, the arguments for the existence of God are no worse than other philosophical arguments.

This is an introduction to the issue of “Theoretical Practice” (“Praktyka Teoretyczna”), entitled “Economic Theologies” (no. 3, 2015), edited by Mikołaj Ratajczak and Rafał Zawisza. It contains contextual explanation of the theoretical field projected by the Italian philosopher Giorgio Agamben, namely a critique of the economic theology elaborated on the basis of early Christian theological debates concerning the concept of divine “oikonomia”. The introduction also includes short summaries of the articles, translations and reviews collected in the issue.

This is an English translation of a paper by Emilia Ehrlich OSU (1924–2006), a long-time secretary and close associate of John Paul II, published in Polish in 1982. Ehrlich reviews the history of Polish Messianism and propounds its original theological interpretation. She compares Polish messianic ideas with the biblical sense of Messianism as well as with the concept of the messianic people found in the documents of Second Vatican Council and developed by Cardinal Karol Wojtyła in his Sources of Renewal. The teaching of the three offices of Christ, as she argues, allows a new theological assessment of many claims of Polish Messianism.

The article deals with Heidegger’s attitudes towards theology. Heidegger, stating that existential philosophy and theology are incompatible, advances a thesis of not objectivating poetic thinking. Whereas, Ricoeur’s biblical hermeneutics is based on his theory of metaphor. The lingual act here means the destruction of the old outlook for the sake of the new one. In this dramatic way cognition occurs as a meeting. The poetic thinking of the late Heidegger is also based on a meeting that covers both horizontal coexistence and vertical direction. The author raises the question whether the poetic thinking of the late Heidegger is not theological?

Johann Heinrich Zorn (1698-1748) was a pastor in Bavaria and an amateur but competent ornithologist. Following the many physico-theological books published in the 18th century, he wrote his Petinotheologie in which he used ornithological knowledge for theological and spiritual purposes. He included extensive descriptions of the anatomy, physiology, living and migration patterns of birds to show the orderliness and harmony in each aspect of avian lives, which was for him an undeniable proof of God’s wisdom, power, and goodness.

Adam Gottlob Schirach był XVIII-wiecznym pastorem i pszczelarzem z Górnych Łużyc. Jako duchowny i praktykujący naukowiec łączył swoje teologiczne i naukowe zainteresowania w udowodnieniu istnienia i atrybutów Boga poprzez obserwacje anatomii, fizjologii, umiejętności i życia społecznego pszczół. Będąc przede wszystkim duchownym, chciał czerpać z tych badań lekcje natury religijnej prowadzące ludzi do pogłębienia ich życia duchowego.
Adam Gottlob Schirach was an eighteenth-century pastor and apiarist from Upper Lusatia. As a cleric and a practicing scientist, he combined his theological and scientific interests in proving the existence and the attributes of God through the observations of the anatomy, physiology, skills, and social life of bees. Being primarily an ecclesiastic, he wanted to derive for these investigations spiritual lessons from people to become more devoted in their religious life.

In 1954, arbitrarily and without consulting with the Catholic Church, the communist authorities transferred the Faculties of Theology of the Jagiellonian University and the University of Warsaw to a new university that they had created without a canonical mandate – the Academy of Catholic Theology in Warsaw. Instead of accepting the Polish communists’ unilateral decision, the Holy See transferred the rights of the Faculty of Theology in Krakow to the Archdiocesan Major Seminary, whose faculty eventually was given the right to have the adjective “Pontifical” in its title. Although it did not have authority from the state, it continued to offer post-secondary education and bestow academic titles upon its graduates. On the basis of this, Pope John Paul II, who as the Archbishop of Krakow was not only officially its great chancellor but also its promoter and special custodian, established the Pontifical Academy of Theology in 1981. This article presents the history of the Pontifical Faculty of Theology in 1954-1982. Its activity in later years as the Pontifical Academy of Theology, which in 2009 became the Pontifical University of John Paul II, will be presented in the second part of this text.

William Derham is one of the most prominent figures in the physico-theology movement in the eighteenth century. He believed that the investigation of nature, its immensity, its complexity, and its harmoniousness can bring most people to the belief in the benevolent and omnipotent God. He strongly believed in the preeminence of final causality which led him to facing the problem of theodicy; he explained the existence of evil through the imperfection of human cognition and through the use of evil as punishment for sin.

Despite many arduous attempts to reconcile the separation between theology and science, the common ground where these two areas of intellectual inquiry could converge has not been fully identified yet. The purpose of this paper is to use evolutionary theology as the new and unique framework in which science and theology are indeed brought into coherent alignment. The major step in this effort is to acknowledge that theology can no longer dialogue with science but must assume science and its method as its conceptual foundation. This approach successfully does away with any tensions that may arise between the two disciplines and establishes a firm ground on which neither of them will turn into ideology. Moreover, it enables the dialogue with contemporary scientific atheism on solid grounds and the restoration of the credibility of theology in the secularist culture of the day.
