Opis:
The process of adaptation to professional career remains an important issue, especially in the domain of professional consultancy. This article aims at the analysis of the relationships between the occupational themes, the ambiguity tolerance level in career decisions and the style of coping with career decision-making difficulties. The study covered 227 students. The participants were assigned occupational themes according to the results obtained from a Multifaceted Occupational Preferences Assessment questionnaire. They have been analysed for the diversity in terms of ambiguity tolerance in career decision-making (Career Decisions Ambiguity Tolerance questionnaire) and the styles of coping with difficulties in career decisions (Coping with Career Decisionmaking Difficulties questionnaire). It has been established that sex is not related to the aforesaid personality dispositions. Persons with the social occupational theme seek social support more often than persons categorised as other types; the artistic theme is most closely connected with the unproductive coping style, while persons categorised as enterprising exhibit the opposite tendency. Furthermore, a correlation between the ambiguity tolerance and the productive coping style in career decisions has been noted.

Opis:
In today’s world, popular culture is an identity-building experience, a powerful driver of social belonging and a domain of emotional involvement. It is a mirror of sorts that reflects human needs and desires – including religious ones. This paper discusses a number of pop cultural texts (comic books) that explore religious themes, and attempts to examine the nature and “quality” of these explorations. In other words, this paper seeks to determine which of these comic books propose a superficial or trivial treatment of religious traditions, and which graphic novels deserve to be considered as culturally relevant, even if perhaps not entirely orthodox, pieces of artwork. A broad methodological approach was applied, with a wide variety of proposals being discussed: on the one hand it examines comic books used as a mere tool for “ideological” persuasion, whilst on the other it looks into comic books that explore religious themes while treating them as a resonant cultural resource.

The aim of this article is to analyze memes about social isolation introduced in connection with the Covid-19 pandemic. The author’s contact with memes during the first weeks of the pandemic (March–April) was initially motivated only by the desire to fill leisure time in such strange circumstances as the time of quarantine. With time, the observation began to take on a more systematic character, and the images found on the web became an interesting research material illustrating strategies undertaken to normalize and familiarize people with forced isolation and imposed social distancing, measures previously unknown in society on such a large scale. The material thus collected was analyzed using the fantasy themes analysis (FTA) method.

Although Krzystof Karasek counts among the most outstanding representatives of the Nowa Fala (New Wave) generation, his poems have not been subject to detailed analysis so far. The author attempts to highlight the meaning of the Orphic threads in Krzysztof Karasek’s poetry written after 1989. For more than twenty years Karasek’s poems have been tied to each other by a suggestive figure of a hero named by the poet a ‘castaway’. This castaway’s characteristics include distance to himself and lack of delusion about the condition of the world after personal and cultural collapse. Still, it also includes great appraisal of life. The poet, defining the figure of the castaway, calls in a number of castaway figures, characters after catastrophe, among which one can find the mythical Orpheus. The article addresses the originality of Karasek’s idea with regard to his polemical texts which engaged with Zbigniew Herbert’s and Julian Kornhauser’s works.

By carefully examining the works of Emerson, a well-known American poet and a look at his poetry and literature, themes and motifs, the influence of one of the great Iranian poets, Saadi Shirazi, can be made clear and confident. Emerson, who was recognized as the founder of the literary school of transcendentalism in American literature, was particularly interested in Sheikh Ajil Saadi, and in his opinion Sa'di was one of the world's greatest poets. The American poet was immersed in Saadi's poetry, tailoring it to his needs. This article tries to investigate Sa'di's contribution to Emerson's works. A poet like Emerson was immersed in Sa'di, loved Saadi, and repeatedly acknowledged that he would love to be like Sa'di and make poetry like his. In order to disseminate his philosophic belief, he needed viable sources from non-European countries. Emerson wanted to criticize the weaknesses of American culture by referring to other rich cultures. It is possible to demonstrate the part Saadi plays in Emerson’s poetry. Sa'di's poetic philosophy has also been embedded in his writings; hence, the sources which shows Emerson has benefited from Sa'di should not be overlooked, since these sources can prove Emerson's being influenced by Sa'di in this research.

The question dealt with in the paper is as follows: to what extent might the notion of “religious literature” be functional if applied both to the early modernliterature and the contemporary literary culture? Does it mean “sacred literature,” simply opposed to the “secular” one, whatever it might mean? The author’s suggestion is to use the notion of “religious literature” more consistently, depending strictly on the liturgical functions of the text (e.g. of prayers, hymns or homilies), while the term “sacred literature” should be used only with reference to the so-called “Sacred Books,” i.e. the Revelation recognized in a given religious system. The sense of the terms “pious literature” or “pious poet,” however, should be much broader, going beyond the limitations of religious functions of the text and reflecting a quasi-prophetic intellectual and moral status of the writer.

Opis:
The authors focus how Byzantine motifs are presented in the teaching of humanities subjects. The question of the presence of Byzantine motifs is essentially one about the presence of Byzantine heritage in Polish culture. With reference to two school subjects – Polish and History – the authors seek to establish what Polish school students are taught about the reach of Byzantine culture. Present-day teaching of both political and cultural history is underpinned by Occidentalism. Only occasionally is attention paid to the “Eastern” features of Poland’s past. A good example of this is the treatment of one of the most important Polish literary texts, the school perennial, Bogurodzica. This draws on Greek religious hymns, contain words originating in the Greek liturgy, and also alludes to a particular type of icon. Accordingly, the connections between the oldest Polish literary text and Byzantine culture are very clear. However, when classroom teachers discuss Bogurodzica with their pupils, detailing the above-mentioned features, are they aware that this text is an epitome of the presence of Byzantine motifs in Polish literature? Apparently not. With regard to the teaching of history, Byzantine motifs can be approached from at least three angles; in terms of imperial political events, in terms of religious (Eastern rite) aspects of Byzantine culture, and finally in terms of awareness of connections between Polish culture and Eastern rite Christianity, as well as Eastern nations and states viewed as heirs of Byzantine culture. In Polish history there has been a side-lining of the nation’s break with Eastern Christianity even though during certain periods this was the faith of half the Commonwealth’s inhabitants. The marginalisation of this topic does not simply impose a limit on knowledge but it prevents the understanding of particular aspects of our history.

While analyzing a song we can concentrate on its three main aspects: how we look at the song, how we respond to the song and how we think about the story in the lyrics. A song is lyrics and music that illuminate a particular reality. We focus on places and people it mentions, on the sounds we hear, on the personal reactions to the lyrics, the music and the imagery it evokes. We often think about the artist and why he/she wrote a particular song and what it tells us about life in general. It refers to what David Fillingim says, that “music should not only entertain; it should make the world a better place” (2003: 93). Country music typically represents the epic – lyric opposition which is emphasized in cyclical songs and the “timelessness of (its) themes.” (Fox, 2004: 236–237). The timeless themes analyzed in this chapter were Southern patriotism, politics and religion. The imaginary moments of utopia, shared values and ideals, bring people together and keep them together, as well as the culture they grew up in does. Music creates community relationships, it works as a process of social bonding “for integration of individual selves, for imagining the possible, for explaining the actual and for flow.”(Turino, 2008: 181, 227). Through the lyrics of their songs, country musicians show how they perceive the world around them “to invoke an ironic, nostalgic, patriotic, sacred, polemical, frightening, and unstable image” (Fox, 2004: 76). They interpret and comment on the political reality they live in and share their opinions and personal experience with the listeners. Religion, as a cultural institution, is a sphere of musical practice. Musical techniques specific to country are used to pass the spiritual message to the recipients. Country fans like it because the songs explain complicated issues in simple words. Using colloquialisms, they stress out ordinary emotions and use simple narratives to tell stories their listeners can refer to. Country music is part of the Southern identity because of its bonding power. Songs about politics and Southern patriotism invite one to participate in the national discussion where everyone has the same right to comment on the issues. Country artists speak about difficult matters in a simple language. That is why their voice is so recognizable. The following paper synthesizes my research of the influence of the “voice” of country music in the construction of the Southern Identity through the ideals of the Imaginary South.

The article is intended to demonstrate selected motifs and themes of Emily Dickinson’s work which is a separate phenomenon in the poetry of the second half of nineteenth century. The poet’s work referring to timeless sense of human existence became a challenge for the Polish poet - Ludmiła Marjańska - who had ventured to translate it and was carrying on with the task throughout the years. Ludmiła Marjańska and Emily Dickinson were connected through richness of their inner lives. Each of the poets is an extraordinary individuality. Their works prove enormous joy of life and fondness of nature. They both deal with existential matters. Emily Dickinson considered the question of the way of existence - not only her own but of each individual - and her place in the world. She expressed it in her works. This paper is a brief introduction to Emily Dickinson and Ludmiła Marjańska and an analysis of selected poems by Dickinson with a bird motif, encumbered with diversified functions. This bird is a sign of joy, hope, reflection, but it also has a self-creative function. Further part of this paper presents some oneiric space as a poetic method employed in Emily Dickinson’s poems. Sleep in the poet’s works is multifaceted. The sleep motif combines the real and eternal worlds. Poetic translations by Ludmiła Marjańska evoke the spirit of the original. The poet believed that a good translation requires adequate preparation and an intuitive approach. In her translations of Emily Dickinson’s poems, the poet attempts to reflect the sound of a given piece of work in Polish. A poem read in an original language version sounds differently, and no translation is capable of exactly reflecting its content in a foreign language, but it may bring it closer.

Journalists use sources to accord credibility to their news stories. However, they use unnamed sources when they feel the sources would be harmed for revealing information to the media. This qualitative study analyzes news from unnamed sources in political stories in Pakistani media. It uses grounded theory to find common themes in the news obtained from unnamed sources. The common themes found in the study were about political crises, and breakdown of law and order in Pakistan. The author discusses the ways in which unnamed sources were used in the stories. Many unnamed sources gave views that were different from those given by named sources in the same story, while a few stories did not give any indication of the rank of the unnamed sources in the hierarchy of the political party or the army.

There appear to be quite a few parallels between Tolkien’s The Lord of the Rings and Boethius’s The Consolation of Philosophy (Consolatio Philosophiae), and they seem to concern particularly, though not only, the character drawing in Tolkien’s book. Those parallels are preeminently connected with the fact that both Boethius and Tolkien like to think of the most extreme situations that can befall a human. And both are attached to the idea of not giving in to despair, and of finding a source of hope in seemingly desperate straits. The idea that there is some link between Boethius and Tolkien is naturally not new. T.A. Shippey talks about it in his The Road to Middle Earth, but he concentrates on the Boethian conception of good and evil, which is also of course an important matter, but surely not the only one that links Tolkien and Boethius. On the other hand, it is not my intention to claim that there is something in Tolkien’s book of which it can be said that it would have been absolutely impossible without Boethius. Still, I think it may be supposed that just like Boethian motifs are natural in the medieval literature of the West, so they can be thought of as natural in the work of such dedicated a medievalist as J.R.R. Tolkien.

Although many specific aspects of the scope and functioning of disability remain insufficiently explored, it is clear that disability is systematically related to poverty in countries across the economic spectrum. Poverty among persons with disabilities is particularly acute in developing nations; it affects exclusion from schooling and, ultimately, access to the labor market. This paper takes a multi-layered approach to overview the synthesis of disability and poverty, restricted access to education, and constraints to economic participation. It finds that persons with disabilities face inequalities in all areas of life, throughout the life cycle, and that these inequalities lead to exclusion and discrimination and to situations of poverty. The underlying argument holds that disability combined with poverty creates dramatic negative impacts on the social and economic health of individuals. Educating students with disabilities is a good investment and international agencies and national governments must increase efforts to target such persons in education, development programs, and poverty alleviation efforts.
