Opis:
The article discusses the stratigraphy and chronological phasing of a late antique trash deposit discovered just outside the north wall of the Isis Temple courtyard. It appears to be consumption waste collected from a large-scale event taking place in the immediate vicinity over a short period of time. Several elements of architectural decoration were found among the rubble, including three fragments of ‘Ionic’ cornice blocks that are an indication of the presence of at least one building with a classical-style architecture in the urban landscape. The fragments are quite unusual in the southern part of the Eastern Desert of Egypt and the first and somewhat unexpected attestation of this style recorded from Berenike.

Opis:
The paper discusses periodic climate changes in Europe determined on the basis of dendrochronological data dating back one thousand years. In tree-ring width sequences of trees growing in Poland there are approximately 8-, 11-, 100- and 180- year periods. The tree-ring widths of oaks growing in Poland for the last centuries are characterised, without any significant amplitude, by 8- and 11-year periods (Tab. 1). In turn, chronologies of pine, spruce, larch, oak and fir growing in Europe are characterised by 100- and 180-year periods (Tab. 2). Cycles of dendrochronological variables approximate cycles of air temperature and North Atlantic Oscillation NAO as well as those of solar activity. The forecast of annual growth (ring width) for 2001-2100 was calculated by interference of the tree-ring width cycles determined by the sinusoidal regression method. Because of much longer empirical sequences of specific periods, the credibility of forecasts for treering widths is greater than that for air temperature.

Opis:
Anterior resection for rectal cancer carries the risk of serious complications, especially fistulas at the site of anastomosis. Numerous factors have been shown to impact anastomotic leakage. The results of studies on the influence of obesity on the frequency of anastomotic leakage after rectal resection performed due to cancer have been contradictory. The aim of the study was to evaluate the relationship between body mass index (BMI) and frequency of anastomotic leakage after anterior rectal resection performed due to cancer. Material and methods. This retrospective analysis included 222 subsequent patients who had undergone anterior resection due to cancer with an anastomosis formed with a mechanical suture. The patients were divided into 3 groups depending on their BMI quartile as follows: Group I, BMI < 23.8 kg/m2 (lower quartile); group II, BMI between 23.8 and 29.38 kg/m2 (middle quartile); and group III, BMI > 29.38 kg/m2 (upper quartile). Results. Anastomotic leakage occurred in 8 (3.6%) patients. Fistulas occurred in 4 out of 61 patients (6.56%) in group I, which was the highest incidence of fistulas for all 3 groups. In group II, fistulas occurred in 2 out of 55 patients (3.63%), and similarly, in group III, they occurred in 2 out of 106 patients (1.87%). The differences found in the frequency of fistulas between groups were not statistically significant (p=0.31). The logistic regression analysis did not show any relationship between leakage and age (p = 0.55; OR = 1.02; 95% CI: 0.95 - 1.1), sex (p = 0.97; OR = 0.97; 95% CI: 0.22 - 4.25) or BMI (p = 0.27; OR = 0.58; 95% CI: 0.22 - 1.53). Conclusions. The results of our study show that BMI did not have any influence on the frequency of anastomotic leakage after anterior rectal resection performed due to cancer.

Opis:
This paper presents the problem of public transport planning in terms of the optimal use of the available fleet of vehicles and reductions in operational costs and environmental impact. The research takes into account the large fleet of vehicles of various types that are typically found in large cities, including the increasingly widely used electric buses, many depots, and numerous limitations of urban public transport. The mathematical multi-criteria mathematical model formulated in this work considers many important criteria, including technical, economic, and environmental criteria. The preliminary results of the Mixed Integer Linear Programming solver for the proposed model on both theoretical data and real data from urban public transport show the possibility of the practical application of this solver to the transport problems of medium-sized cities with up to two depots, a heterogeneous fleet of vehicles, and up to about 1500 daily timetable trips. Further research directions have been formulated with regard to larger transport systems and new dedicated heuristic algorithms.

Opis:
Scheduling buses in public transport systems consists in assigning trips to vehicle blocks. To minimize the cost of fuel and environmental impact of public transport, the number of vehicle blocks used should be as small as possible, but sufficient to cover all trips in a timetable. However, when solving real life transportation problems, it is difficult to decide whether the number of vehicle blocks obtained from an algorithm is minimal, unless the actual minimal number is already known, which is rare, or the theoretical lower bound on the number of vehicles has been determined. The lower bound on the number of vehicle blocks is even more important and useful since it can be used both as a parameter that controls the optimization process and as the minimum expected value of the respective optimization criterion. Therefore, methods for determining the lower bound in transportation optimization problems have been studied for decades. However, the existing methods for determining the lower bound on the number of vehicle blocks are very limited and do not take multiple depots or heterogeneous fleet of vehicles into account. In this research, we propose a new practical and effective method to assess the lower bound on the number of vehicle blocks in the Multi-Depot Vehicle Scheduling Problem (MDVSP) with a mixed fleet covering electric vehicles (MDVSP-EV). The considered MDVSP-EV reflects a problem of public transport planning encountered in medium-sized cities. The experimental results obtained for a real public transport system show the great potential of the proposed method in determining the fairly strong lower bound on the number of vehicle blocks. The method can generate an estimated distribution of the number of blocks during the day, which may be helpful, for example, in planning duties and crew scheduling. An important advantage of the proposed method is its low calculation time, which is very important when solving real life transportation problems.
