    Opis:
    The 2014 Regional Conference of the International Geographical Union is a good occasion for reflections on changes that took place in Polish industrial geography at the turn of the 21st century.This article discusses several issues which – in the author’s opinion – best reflect those changes: (a) problems with defining the substantive scope of the discipline; (b) new methodological trends (e.g. evolutionary, relational, institutional approaches); (c) a new look at the factors of location of an economic activity; and (d) the place of industry in present-day spatial processes (globalisation, transformation, tertiarisation of the economy). The second part of the article offers (1) an analysis of the involvement of Polish industrial geography in systemic transition; (2) a survey of its contemporary most important research problems, and (3) anassessment of the current state of Polish industrial geography, including its strengths and weaknesses.It should be emphasised that this paper does not seek to give a full survey of the latest publications in Polish industrial geography; it is only intended to outline an evolution of research issues against trends in world geography.

    Opis:
    This paper intervenes in the Granovetter-Polanyi debate by reassessing the level of embeddedness of social and economic relations under conditions of systemic transition. Using panel data collected in Poland, this analysis examines this relationship for three distinct periods of transition: initial (1988–1993), advanced (1993–1998), and post-transitional (1998–2003). This paper shows that during transition from communism to capitalism economic relations tended to disembed from social relations, but this relationship remained significant; friendship ties were conductive to an individual upward mobility, economic well-being and entrepreneurial activity. In contrast to Polanyi’s argument, however, entrepreneurship-the most marketable area of individual advancement-is found to exhibit the highest degree of social–economic embeddedness. These results do not directly support either Polanyi’s or Granovetter’s arguments, however they do accord with a neo-Polanyian argument, as advanced in this paper.

    Opis:
    Rising trends in economic inequality are well-established across many affluent nations. However, researchers have accrued considerably less knowledge regarding the economic attitudes and preferences of individuals living within the context of increasing inequality, especially in developing or transition countries. To gain leverage on this topic, we utilize data from Polish Panel Survey (POLPAN) from 1988–2003 to examine change over time in respondents’ preferred levels of income inequality. Results show that Poles tend to accept higher levels of income inequality over time. This effect increases with time, even after controlling for respondents’ meritocratic beliefs and attitudes toward state intervention. In addition, this rise in preferred income inequality changes in accordance with actual and perceived changes in the earnings distribution. After describing the patters of variation in acceptance of income inequality between different social groups, we discuss the implications of individuals’ evolving benchmarks for preferred levels of inequality.
