Opis:
The effect of tribological wear of contacts made from an AgNi10 alloy on microstructure and electrical properties was investigated. The contacts were tested in duty cycles loaded with alternating current of 10A intensity. With this value of the current, intensive arcing of contacts occurred. The contacts were tested in the range of 125 to 500 thousand cycles. The contacting surfaces were reported to suffer a high degree of wear, but electrical resistance of the contact system remained stable.

Opis:
Energy market is the sector of the economy which has been given a lot of attention in the last decades. This results not only from a global increase in demand for energy but also from the needs for environmental protection. It should be also noted that modernization of the energy sector is capital-intensive. Therefore, the directions of development in this sector should be driven not only by ecological reasons but also by reasonable economic calculus based on in-depth analysis of operational costs in the next decades. For this reason, an important position in the structure of energy generation is taken by co-combustion of various fuels, with particular focus on coal and biomass. Co-combustion of fuel mixtures, with each fuel having varied properties, often accelerates degradation of the structural components of a boiler.

The oxidative decomposition reactions of fuchsine dye on the surface of nano-catalyst Cu0.5Pb0.5ZrO3 were studied carefully in an aqueous solution in the presence of H2O2 under condition of pseudo-first order reaction. The catalyst was prepared by solid state route using pure nominal composition of metal oxides. The structural and micro-structural properties of the catalyst were characterized well by XRD, SEM and AFM respectively. Many of the kinetic parameters were investigated in this article, results obtained indicated that, the rate of oxidative degradation of acid fuchsine dye was found to be pH-dependent. The mechanism was proposed and the activation parameters were calculated.

Opis:
The response surface method was applied to optimize operational factors in the solar photocatalytic process on the removal of Amoxicillin (AMOX) residues from aqueous solution using TiO2 immobilized on the sand as a catalyst. The results reveal that the degradation percentage of AMOX is 93.12%, when optimal conditions of pH=5, 75 mg/l of TiO2, 400 mg/l of H2O2, and 10 mg/l of AMOX concentration at 150 min irradiation time were used. Furthermore, the model’s expected response results have reasonable similarity with the actual data (R2 = 93.58%), demonstrating the efficiency of this method in making an accurate prediction. A second-order polynomial multiple regression model was used to evaluate the responses, which confirms that was a satisfactory adjustment with the achieved data through analysis of variance (R2 = 93.58%, R2adj = 91.48% and R2pred =89.68%). In addition, it is observed that the removal of undesirable compounds follows a pseudo-2nd order kinetic model with R2 = 0.9862. In conclusion, with the ease of usage of immobilized TiO2 and good photocatalytic efficiency, the findings showed the potential application to the antibiotics from an aqueous solution.

Opis:
The consequence of the deposits presence on the heat transfer surface of the following heat exchangers: shell-and-tube condensers, the regenerative feed water exchangers, are commonly the loss of heat exchanger capacity, owing to the high value of heat conductive resistance of fouling. The process is more often defined as the thermal (heat) degradation of a given heat transfer device. The symptoms of heat degradation are usually defined as the difference between the values of thermal-flow parameters for the current and the reference state. Moreover, this process always entails an increase in the cost of energy conversion, leading to increasing the emission output of greenhouse gases consequently increasing the environmental degradation. It is worth mentioning that deposits settled on the waterside of heat transfer surface could also initiate the process of tubes obliteration. This phenomenon is characteristic for condensers cooled by seawater in particular. Reducing internal diameter of any single heat exchanger pipe by the deposits cause the rise in flow resistance and also reduce the condenser cooling water pump capacity. Ultimately, it leads to the reduction in water flow rate, resulting in an additional increase in the resistance of heat transfer. Furthermore, reducing the flow rate of cooling water causes the enhancement of the fouling settling rate. The paper describes the above-mentioned phenomena and presents the quantitative determinants of the thermal degradation description for heat exchangers based on the results of the author’s own experimental research.

Opis:
A number of physical methods are used to survey railway track ballast to assess its degradation as a function of deposition. Simulation tests on track models are also conducted. These testing methods, which are generally labour-intensive and expensive, provide an accurate understanding of the extent of ballast degradation. However, the impact of inadequate maintenance can be observed, even on the surface. Therefore, it seems natural in this case to use image registration. State-of-the-art machine vision systems of track geometry cars provide the means to do this. Obtained ballast images provide a baseline for evaluating its level in relation to sleepers. However, no information is available on other signs of track degradation, such as overgrown vegetation (weeds) or the so-called local muddy areas, which are generally a consequence of poor drainage and a lack of subgrade insulation. These degradations are observed to generate distinctive colour images that are superimposed on the overall image of the ballast surface. They differ in colour and shape. Hence, the authors used this phenomenon to develop an algorithm for the extraction of ballast degradation images based on RGB imaging. Surface descriptors have also been offered to assess these degradations. Extensive measurement material from the railway lines was used to conduct survey experiments based on the examples. The results clearly demonstrate the high success rate of the applied method.

The paper presents some environmental impacts caused by two important factors of physical degradation of the soil, i.e., soil surface sealing/crusting phenomena and soil compaction. It can be concluded that despite numerous literature on the subject as well as the Authors' own data collected in model laboratory and field experiments, it is still difficult to judge to what extent the effects of those two processes are negative for both the soil environment and the plant growth.

Opis:
Most of the plastic produced, being one-use plastic packaging, is finally disposed of into the environment. Several agents such as solar radiation, mechanical forces, and microbial action may enable the degradation of these plastics. The purpose of this article is to present a method for studying the properties of a surface of a microplastic particle affected by erosion at the microscale level, which occurred with the help of destructive forces associated with the impact of the sea. The results of analysis of the morphology of the tested sample of microplastic (consisting of poly(propylene)) allowed observing how it was degraded. Examining the surface of a microplastic, one can analyze a number of factors as well as determine the possible path the material has traveled until it was collected as a sample. By determining the scale of the patterns, it is possible to estimate how long the sample and other microplastics present in marine environments have been there. The use of an Atomic Force Microscope not only allows the surface of the sample to be imaged in a non-destructive manner but also enables the degree of degradation to be calculated mathematically, provided a baseline is established from which erosion can be assumed to have originated.

Photocatalysts based on TiO2 co-doped with rare earth metal (RE) and gold nanoparticles have been prepared using a sol-gel method and followed by gold reduction. Specific surface areas of the modified photocatalysts were calculated by the Brunauer-Emmett-Teller method (BET). Diffuse reflectance spectra of the obtained photocatalysts were recorded with a UV-Vis spectrophotometer (DRS UV-Vis). The influence of the type of rare earth metal on photoactivity of Au-RE-TiO2 nanocomposites in model reaction manifested by toluene photodegradation in a gas phase was investigated. The obtained results showed that photodegradation of toluene in the gas phase is possible over Au-RE-TiO2 irradiated by UV or Vis light. The Au-RE-TiO2 photocatalysts relative to undoped TiO2, did not caused an increase of toluene degradation in the air under visible light. The samples doped with Er3+ or Pr3+ presented the highest activity in solar light among of Au-RE-TiO2. It was observed that both metal dopants affected the surface area of TiO2. The Au-RE-TiO2 photocatalysts relative to undoped TiO2 exhibited the absorption properties under Vis light.

Decomposition kinetics of natural organic substances during the photocatalytic process with a semi-conductor TiO2 has been investigated. In the study, a laboratory reactor Heraeus and in a photocatalytic membrane reactor were used. Simulated solutions of deionized water, surface water and fulvic acids, differing in composition, were tested in the experiment. In order to determine reaction rate constants, the Langmuir–Hinshelwood kinetic model based on the first order reaction was applied. It was found that photocatalytic process enabled effective degradation of natural organic substances although its run was affected by inorganic ions, mainly those producing water hardness, present in water.

Opis:
The problem of numerical simulation of the material interface response under monotonic and cyclic loading is of fundamental scientific and engineering importance. In fact, such interfaces occur in most engineering and geotechnical structures. The present work is devoted to the deformational response analysis of contact interfaces under monotonic and cyclic loads. The class of materials includes rock and structural joints, soil structure interfaces, masonry and cementitious joints, localized shear bands and so on. The aim of the proposed model is to simulate the cyclic shear test under constant normal load. The associated dilatancy effect is associated with the configurational effects of asperity interaction or dilatancy of wear debris layer. The large primary asperities are assumed as responsible for interfacial dilation and small size asperities as governing frictional sliding and hysteresis response. The elliptic loading yield function is assumed to translate and rotate during progressive or reverse loading events. The model formulation is discussed and confronted with experimental data.
