The report deals with the project of research in pedagogical staffs in educational institutes within the Czech Republic. The research is planned for three years, i.e. 2006–2008. At the first stage there will be the institutions chosen which are close to the so-called community system by their nature, and on the contrary, the institutions which are run in a classical subordinative way. These two groups of institutions will be subsequently subjected to an analysis.

Opis:
The following paper concerns the topic of cross-cultural transition of Third Culture Kids and its determinants: personality, attachment style and religiosity. Third Culture Kids are understood in accordance with David Pollock and Van Reken as those who at least part of their childhood spent abroad. The results of the conducted research suggest that personality, measured by the Rorschach Inkblot Test, strongly determines emotional, cognitive and behavioral aspects of the process. Factors such as: anxiety and lack of emotional stability seem to be of great importance. Moreover, during cross-cultural transition the attachment style, developed in relations with parents or other attachment figures, strongly determines the building of relationships abroad. High distress, part and parcel of the process, brings out dysfunctional character of attachment style. Other typical traces mentioned in monograph devoted to Third Culture Kids by Pollock and Van Reken, as: problems with decision making and identity, lacking sense of belonging, unresolved grief, were also evidenced in my research. Religion and spirituality might be used as a coping strategy during cross-cultural transition. However, it seems very often not to be perceived as such or neglected by interviewees in the research.

JOURNALISM ( CULTURE

STYLE)
Opis:
The paper aims to point out some instances of language innovations appearing in written journalism and to comment on their contribution to the culture of present-day language. The data were obtained from the following Czech dailies published between 2000 and 2005: 'Mladá fronta DNES', 'Právo', and 'Lidové noviny'. As written journalistic texts rank among official types of communication, the logical expectation would be for them to employ strictly standard language, with moderately literary ways of expression. However, in practice this is very different. Contemporary journalism is open to language means (mostly lexical) from different stylistic levels. Many of these never establish themselves as permanent components of language. This is especially fortunate in the case of inadequately used, strongly pejorative expressions, which can hardly be considered a positive contribution to language culture.

The authors describe budo karate as one of the aspects of safety culture. Nowadays, there are three pillars of karate: traditional karate, sports and self-defense. Karate is a particular feld of physical culture that forms the foundation for all three pillars of safety culture: the mental, organizational and material pillar. Karate meets the modern expectations of increasing the quality of life, feeling of security and protection against the dangers of the modern world. The authors also note that all style karate is a system that symbiotically combines tradition with appropriately construed modernity, while simultaneously enabling self-fulfllment.

AMERICANIZATION

STYLE
Opis:
The paper deals with the perceived hegemony of American mass culture in Poland and its effects on young people. It is argued that the supposed 'Americanization' of Poland through Hollywood films does not constitute any serious threat to Polish national identity, and in fact has little to do with any genuine American cultural influence. Rather, it amounts to the passing adoption of American styles. Explaining that Hollywood is an internationally owned and operated force that works more to appeal to the tastes of the worldwide audience than America's, it is concluded that the globalization of American cinema is more a threat to the U.S.A. national identity than that of other countries. Additionally, the fact that many Americans such as right-wing politicians and conservative Southerners and Midwesterners have viewed Hollywood antagonistically from its inception, indicates the degree to which it should not be considered as representative of American culture or the nation as a whole. Likewise, the content of Hollywood's films has almost nothing to do with the reality of the country it happens to rest in. To illustrate the point that Poland does not suffer from Americanization, American and Polish national characteristics are detailed to demonstrate the vast differences between the world views and cultures of these two nations and peoples. Ultimately, it is suggested that there has been no significant internal cultural impact on Polish youth due to contact with American entertainment, other than on the surface in the form of fashion and appearance. Also, they are becoming more and more derisive of American mass culture as time passes. Therefore, core Polish attitudes have not become more American and the Polish culture, which has survived so much in the past, has very little to fear from the vapid Hollywood fantasy land a continent away.

Opis:
This article aims at exploring and problematizing the role of visual designs, as applied in a selection of five popular recent college textbooks that introduce students to Cultural and Media Studies. It can be observed that academic textbooks are increasingly produced in alignment with the properties of contemporary visual culture. The article reviews some of these properties, focusing on the growing need for enhancing visual literacy. It presents the framework of multimodal analysis, as the textbook is co-constituted by verbal and visual modes, which are integrated through a common design. The analytic categories of multimodal analysis allow for a qualitative, yet systematic, examination of some compositional and semiotic resources that have been applied in textbooks. The analysis focuses on textbook typography, supra-textual organization, the number and choice of figures/tables/lists, the layout of pages, structure of chapter/section, and type and framing of visuals. This is followed by a function-oriented critical discussion of these stylistic properties and of the implications of certain compositional preferences for teaching/learning. The study identifies designs that result in diversifying and aestheticizing textbooks visually, as well as hierarchizing and objectivizing knowledge. While both advantages and disadvantages of currently popular designs can be found, attention is drawn to the fact that visually-enhanced designs might fail to engage students in critical reflection, simplify the issues, and divert attention from the merits of exposition/argument, particularly if students lack skills in visual literacy.

Opis:
Saffron, made from the dried stigmas of Crocus sativus L., contains pigments and valuable aromatic compounds, and can be used in medicine and as a spice. Nowadays its production is lower than demand. Tissue culture presents an alternative biochemical tool which can be used to produce stigma-like structure (SLS) in vitro. In this study, the origin and induction of SLS formation was investigated in ovary and style explants of floral buds on MS medium supplemented with 1-naphthalene acetic acid (NAA) and 6-benzlaminopurine (BAP). SLS were directly originated through meristematic cells or indirectly in the form of colorless globular structures from parenchyma tissue. The colorless globular structures initially were conical and pale yellow color at the sharp ends; subsequently they matured into trumpet-like red stigmas with or without finger-like papillae at the margins. Light and electron microscopic observations of ultra- and semithin sections of different developmental stages of SLS showed that these structures possess two kinds of cells: (1) small cells close to parenchyma tissues and (2) large cells oriented towards the peripheral area and apparently originated from the small ones. Our results suggest that the SLS originated from internal parenchyma tissues.

Opis:
This article attempts to determine the relative chronology of the Kietrz cemetery of the Lusatian culture proceeding from the stylistic development of forms and ornamentation of vessels coming from selected pottery inventories. The co-occurrence matrix of forms and ornaments, developed from the sources described above, was examined using correspondence analysis. Graphic representation of the results forms a quite distinct arc-shaped layout in the plot of two principal axes. Correspondence analysis was also conducted for the identified types of decoration. The results, transposed into a two-dimensional diagram, show a different, not arch-like distribution. Objects and variables form two separate clusters. Detailed analysis of the two diagrams allowed for many valuable conclusions: (1) phases of vessel form development are polythetic assemblages, which means that they are formed by specific combinations of attributes or their frequencies rather than by strictly defined sets of phase-unique attributes; (2) in the development of pottery forms, one can observe a continuous evolution between phases BrC2 and HaC, i. e. in the period spanning nearly 800 years (ca 1380–600 BC). This confirms earlier conclusions, based on planigraphy data, concerning the uninterrupted functioning of the cemetery; (3) development of pottery decoration followed a different pattern – a “revolutionary” change in HaA was followed by a continuous development until the end of early Hallstatt period, when a regression in pottery ornamentation probably took place; (4) there is some discrepancy between the present results and M.Gedl’s chronology with respect to the older phases of vessel form and decoration development (among other things, the present results suggest dating the appearance of bossed decoration as early as BrC2).

As an island nation, the topic of training and sending out seafarers is a present challenge in Japan. Awareness activities for elementary, junior high, and senior high school students are essential for securing future mariner job candidates. In this study, we conducted maritime and marine educational methods using various procedures to raise awareness about previous maritime industries. We also brought in maritime specialists for junior high school students who will be continuing to maritime educational institutions, and conducted a comparative study of the results. In this study, we compared three types of educational content: lectures on leadership techniques, observational field trips, and hands-on lessons. The results showed that students had the highest interest in the hands-on lessons, followed by observational field trips, then finally the lectures. These results demonstrated that when creating class content for maritime and marine education, this should be adapted to the identity of the young people who are to receive that education.

The paper outlines the meaning of two terms: culture, both in a general perspective and with a view to the concept of nation - ethnic community, and language style. It then analyses the Czech-American periodical press of the 2nd half of the 19th century, exploring the development of the constitutive means of style, in particular topic and language. The changes discovered are attributed to the continuing assimilation of Czech immigrants in the USA and perceived as the beginning of their Czech-American bilingualism.

Opis:
Since the last quarter of the 20th century, hip hop has become a cultural means of self-expression, entertainment, and empowerment for youths throughout the world. The creative manipulation of verbal and non-verbal codes has been the main vehicle through which the enormous hip hop cultural industry has been sustained and revitalized. This study investigates the creative ingenuity of a group of Naija (Nigerian) youths in Calabar, south-eastern Nigeria, in the creation of a peculiar hip hop brand in the Nigerian Hip Hop Nation (NHHN). Particularly, the study works through Appadurai’s (1996, 2002) theory on migration and the electronic media as agents of modernity to apprehend the emergence and development of hip hop in Nigeria through the example of Calabar hip hop exponents. This article also derives discursive insight from Alim’s (2009) idea of style as a major non-verbal linguistic vector of hip hop to identify and interrogate the creative ingenuity of the Nigerian youths here examined. Our study concludes that through the formation of a creative bond and the manipulation verbal and performance codes from their cultural space these Nigerian youths have established a peculiar brand of hip hop and are contributing to the transnational, multi-vocal Global Hip Hop Nation.

The aim of the article is to present the results of the research study of management and work cultures in Poland and Ukraine that was conducted in 2016. The author analyses similarities and differences in organizational behaviours in three aspects:1) management style – in both cultures respondents pointed out hierarchical style as dominating, but in the case of Poland in a lesser degree than in the case of Ukraine.2) team work – in both cultures collectivistic approach in team- work is predominating, thus co-workers help each other and appre- ciate good atmosphere (harmony).3) communication style – people in both cultures communicate emotionally, however Poles express their more through higher and emotional voice, whereas Ukrainians express their feelings also via body language.Commonly Polish and Ukrainian cultures are regarded as very close as both countries have the same religious, cultural and ethnic roots. Ukrainians and Poles manifest a number of the same organiza- tional behaviours, according to the GLOBE (Global Leadership and Organizational Behaviour Effectiveness) study – Polish and Ukrainian cultures belong to the same cultural cluster – Eastern Europe (which constitutes one of ten distinguished clusters) and are different from oth- er clusters, but still there are differences between both cultures which matter in inter – cultural management. Crucially, one cluster contains several countries and they differ from each other in a subtler manner.

Background and Study Aim: The philosophy of karate can have a huge impact on the daily life of an individual. In the shotokan karate are two codes: the dojo-kun and the niju-kun. They form the pillars of the philosophy of this martial art. Material and methods: The aim of the study is to analyze the principles of the dojo-kun and niju-kun. The analysis of data is conducted. The results are presented in the form of source texts – understanding the dojo-kun and niju-kun in the perspective of different authors. Results: Philosophical aspect of the dojo-kun and the niju-kun is manifested not only on respect for moral norms but it also applies in particular to self-control and emotional zone. The relationship between language and emotion is very clear, and thoughts are often saturated with feelings. Thus, disclosed herein is a fact that there are inextricable links between culture, psychology and socjology. Conclusions: All elements of the psychophysical karate form a kind of culture – the culture of karate. People from the area of the culture of karate treat practicing karate as a method of self-realization. Their overall objective is to develop and improve their lives by continuous spiritual and physical-improvement.
Tło i cel: Filozofia karate ma duży wpływ na życie trenujących karate. W stylu shotokan wyróżniamy dwa kodeksy: dojo-kun i niju-kun. Stanowią one podstawę filozofii tej sztuki walki. Celem badania była analiza zasad dojo-kun i niju-kun. Materiał i metody: Dokonano analizy tekstów źródłowych - rozumienie dojo-kun i niju-kun z perspektywy różnych autorów.
