Opis:
We study the famous examples of G. S. Young [7] and R. H. Bing [2]. We generalize and simplify a little their constructions. First we introduce Young spirals which play a basic role in all considerations. We give a construction of a Young spiral which does not have the fixed point property (see Section 5) . Then, using Young spirals, we define two classes of uniquely arcwise connected curves, called Young spaces and Bing spaces. These classes are analogous to the examples mentioned above. The definitions identify the basic distinction between these classes. The main results are Theorems 4.1 and 6.1.

Opis:
Objectives: The aim of this paper is to address the cycle from monetary policy becoming the main instrument of macroeconomic stabilisation to the current unexpected decline in its effectiveness. Research Design and Methods: This article analyses how preventing the risk of wage-price spirals unwinding became the main task of central banks. Such a perception of monetary policy role was a natural consequence of the Great Inflation of the 1970s and the substantial costs of disinflation of the 1980s. Then this paper highlights the causes behind the recent unexpected emergence of persistently low inflation. Among the most important causes of this were structural changes which took place also in labour markets, being the outcome of the twilight of traditional manufacturing and increasing globalisation. Findings: The structural weakening of the bargaining position labour creates situation in which the period when monetary policy was focused on preventing wage-price spirals has ended. If advanced economies are entering a long period of low inflation and low interest rates, it will necessitate a reformulation of the role that central banks play in stabilisation policies. Recommendation: This paper postulates that central banks should acquire a pivotal role in the macroprudential policy. The main argument is that the independence of central banks, which they obtained when fighting inflation, would increase the effectiveness of the macro-prudential policy. Contribution: Usually success in lowering and stabilising inflation is attributed mainly to the changes in the way in which central banks have been conducting their monetary policy since the early 1980s. This article highlights the fact that the role which was played in this process by the substantial weakening of the labour bargaining position is still underappreciated.

Opis:
It is shown that the magnetic structure of high-$T_{c}$ superconductors is strongly influenced by the next-nearest neighbor hopping parameter t' which distinguishes different families of cuprates. Our investigations indicate that uniform spirals get favored by a large t'/t ratio but are unstable at small doping towards stripes with spin canting. For large |t'/t| spirals can be stabilized under certain conditions in the overdoped regime which may explain the elastic incommensurate magnetic response recently observed in iron-co-doped Bi2201 materials.

Opis:
In this article, the morphology of a brown alga is revisited and compared to the phyllotaxis of land plants. The alga, Sargassum muticum (Yendo) Fensholt has a highly organized thallus with a stipe, the stem-like main axis, and hierarchically organized lateral branches of successive orders. Around each of these axes, the lateral organs: blades, side-branches, and receptacles grow in a spiral disposition. As in land plants, this organization is related to an apical mode of growth. Measurements performed along the mature differentiated axes as well as in their meristematic regions confirm the similarity of the large-scale organization of this brown alga with that of the land plants. In particular, the divergence angle between successive elements has similar values and it results from the existence around the meristem of parastichies having the same Fibonacci ordering. This is remarkable in view of the fact that brown algae (Phaeophyceae) and land plants (Embryophyta) are two clades that diverged approximately 1800 million years ago when they were both unicellular organisms. We argue that the observed similarity results from a morphogenetic convergence. This is in strong support of the genericity and robustness of self-organization models in which similar structures, here Fibonacci related spirals, can be obtained in various situations in which the genetic and physiological implementation of development can be of a different nature.

Opis:
The early stages of growth and the evolution of surface microstructure of epitaxial c-axis YBa$\text{}_{2}$Cu$\text{}_{3}$O$\text{}_{7-x}$ thin films were studied as a function of film thickness, growth temperature, and growth rate. The films were grown in situ on as-polished or annealed MgO(100) substrates by off-axis magnetron sputtering. Atomic force microscopy was used to observe the surface microstructure. From the results at early stages, we proposed a growth model of spirals for the films grown on as-polished substrate, i.e. spirals are formed around the surface roughness of the substrate. Growth temperature and growth rate dependence on the density of spirals support this model. That is, the density of spirals does not change according to the change of growth temperature (600-740°C) or growth rate (7-80 nm/h).
