    The paw graph consists of a triangle with a pendant edge attached to one of the three vertices. We obtain a multigraph by adding exactly one repeated edge to the paw. Now, let D be a directed graph obtained by orientating the edges of that multigraph. For 12 of the 18 possibilities for D, we establish necessary and sufficient conditions on n for the existence of a [formula] design. Partial results are given for the remaining 6 possibilities for D.

    The considered problem covers routing and spectrum allocation problem (RSA problem) in Elastic Optical Networks while maintaining the spectrum continuity constraints, non-overlapping spectra constraints for adjacent connections on individual links of the network and spectrum contiguity constraints of the connection. In this article the modified version of the First Fit spectrum slot allocation policy for Fixed Alternate Routing in flexible optical networks has been proposed. The Fixed Alternate Routing with proposed spectrum allocation policy rejects fewer requests, provides less bandwidth blocking probability and less spectrum fragmentation than Fixed Alternate Routing with well-known First Fit and Exact Fit spectrum allocation policies. However, the cost of improving these parameters is a higher computational complexity of the proposed allocation policy.

    The aim of this paper is a presentation of problems that might arise during determination of the bubble size spectrum in the sea using an inverse acoustics method. The mathematical model is introduced and limits of its numerical solution are discussed. Theoretical considerations lead to ill-posed system of integral equations and the system of linear equations resulting from a discretization process is solved using the Tikhonov regularization method. A mathematical model is tested for a power-law bubble size distribution. Some examples of theoretical studies related to this problem are provided. Practical applications of the bubble population determination algorithm on the basis of collected in situ empirical data concerning sound speed and attenuation are given.

    Service time-varying traffic flexible optical networks require a dynamic bandwidth allocation in order to follow the source transmission rate. The problem of service time-varying traffic, assuming that the set of connection requests is not known in advance, is considered in this work. Connection requests arrive randomly and have random durations. The considered dynamic RSA problem involves minimizing the probability of future connections blocking while maintaining spectrum continuity constraints and non-overlapping spectrum assignment constraints between spectrum-adjacent connections on the network links. The proposed algorithm determines the path with the required number of slots around the reference frequency for a connection request. An analysis of the network with time-varying traffic on the network connections was carried out on the basis of spectrum expansion/contraction schemes which allow to determine average blocking probability of the additional slot requests on these connections. The obtained results have been compared with those obtained by a well known algorithm that solves the dynamic RSA problem.

    We use Green's function of a suitable boundary value problem to convert the variational problem with quadratic functional and linear constraints to the equivalent unconstrained extremal problem in some subspace of the space L2 of quadratically summable functions. We get the neccessary and sufficient criterion for unique solvability of the variational problem in terms of the spectrum of some integral Hilbert-Schmidt operator in L2 with symmetric kernel. The numerical technique is proposed to estimate this criterion. The results are demonstrated on examples: 1) a variational problem with deviating argument, and 2) the problem of the critical force for the vertical pillar with additional support point (the qualities of the pillar may vary discontinuously along the pillar's axis).

    Measles-mumps vaccinations might be responsible for the development of autism spectrum diseases (ASD), including high functioning autism, such as Asperger’s syndrome; that is what Wakefield et al. suggested in a paper in The Lancet twenty years ago [1]. Later, the Lancet Editors retracted this publication [2], due to the fact that Wakefield had „produced“ fake, falsified results, and that he was implicated in interests regarding material compensation from pharmaceutical companies producing vaccines to families with ASD. The Wakefield publication had the effect that consequently vaccination rates declined dramatically, and fuelled discussions about other environmental factors (bacteria, mercury, pesticides, etc.).

    In this paper, the problem of aliasing and folding effects in spectrum of sampled signals in view of Information Theory is discussed. To this end, the information content of deterministic continuous time signals, which are continuous functions, is formulated first. Then, this notion is extended to the sampled versions of these signals. In connection with it, new signal objects that are partly functions but partly not are introduced. It is shown that they allow to interpret correctly what the Whittaker–Shannon reconstruction formula in fact does. With help of this tool, the spectrum of the sampled signal is correctly calculated. The result achieved demonstrates that no aliasing and folding effects occur in the latter. Finally, it is shown that a Banach–Tarski-like paradox can be observed on the occasion of signal sampling.

    It is shown that any μ ∈ C is an infinite multiplicity eigenvalue of the Steklov smoothing operator Sh acting on the space [formula]. For μ ≠ 0 the eigenvalue-eigenfunction problem leads to studying a differential-difference equation of mixed type. An existence and uniqueness theorem is proved for this equation. Further a transformation group is defined on a countably normed space of initial functions and the spectrum of the generator of this group is studied. Some possible generalizations are pointed out.
