Opis:
Introduction Multiple sclerosis is a debilitating condition that affects the central nervous system and is most common in young people. Over time, the relapses associated with the disease can cause damage, and within ten years of onset, half of patients may experience progressive symptoms. Unfortunately, once a patient enters a progressive stage, there is no longer any improvement or remission, though some patients may experience a longer period of stability. Objectives The goal of this study is to examine the relationship between social and sexual life in patients with multiple sclerosis, considering the progressive nature of the disease, the fluctuating psychological impact, and the impact on their reproductive abilities. Methods The study utilized the Multiple Sclerosis Quality of Life Questionnaire to assess the participants. This questionnaire measures quality of life by asking generic and specific questions related to multiple sclerosis, with a total of 18 items addressing specific needs such as fatigue, cognitive function, sexual function, daily activities, social interaction, and more. Results: The results indicated that most women with multiple sclerosis reported decreased lubrication, while men’s main concern was satisfying their partner. The majority of participants reported being neither satisfied nor dissatisfied with their sexual and social life. The frequency of sexual dysfunction was found to be higher in women with multiple sclerosis compared to the general population, with decreased libido being the most commonly reported issue. Individuals with primary progressive multiple sclerosis were found to have significantly increased problems with sexual function. Conclusion This study found a correlation between social and sexual life for individuals with multiple sclerosis. As their social life worsened, their sexual life and reproductive capacity were also negatively impacted.

Background: The changes that occur in a woman’s body during the perimenopausal period may influence feelings of attractiveness and perception of status in an intimate relationship, which may play a role in overall sexual satisfaction. Aim of the study: The present study aimed to analyze the influence of selected perimenopausal symptoms on the perception of satisfaction with sexual life in urban and rural women. Material and methods: This study included 224 women from urban areas and 106 women from rural areas who were using general practice services. Inclusion criteria were women who had not menstruated for 2–5 years. The measures used were the Menopause Rating Scale (MRS) and the Sexual Quality of Life-Female questionnaire (SQoL-F). Spearman’s rank correlation coefficient was used to assess the relationship between the severity of perimenopausal symptoms and satisfaction with sexual life. Results: A greater proportion of urban women reported symptoms in the perimenopausal period than rural women. Statistically significant correlations were observed for irritability (P = 0.03) and sexual problems (P = 0.01). However, rural women reported a greater degree of symptom severity. There was a statistically significant difference in severity of somatic and psychological symptoms between urban and rural women. In urban women, the average score for general satisfaction with their sexual life was 62 ± 19.96, whereas the average score for rural women was slightly less, 59 ± 23.56. A statistically significant inverse relationship was observed between the severity of perimenopausal symptoms and quality of sexual life, with values of Spearman’s rank correlation coefficients ranging from −0.490 to −0.064. Conclusions: Urban or rural residence had a slight influence on the frequency and severity of perimenopausal symptoms, and severity of symptoms had a significant influence on women’s satisfaction with their sexual life.

Opis:
Introduction: Proctocolectomy with ileal pouch-anal anastomosis is the gold standard in the surgical treatment of patients with ulcerative colitis, familial adenomatous polyposis and other colorectal diseases requiring colectomy. The treatment consists in removing the large intestine and creating an intestinal reservoir from the last ileum loop and then anastomosing the intestinal reservoir with the anal canal. Like any surgical procedure, RPC-IPAA also carries the risk of complications, both early and late. Late postoperative complications include sexual dysfunction. Aim: The main goal of the following work is to assess the quality of life and sexual activity in patients having undergone the RPC-IPAA procedure at the General and Colorectal Surgery Clinic. Material and methods: The study group consisted of patients aged 19–79 who had been subjected to RPC-IPAA procedures at the General and Colorectal Surgery Clinic in years 2010–2019. The study was conducted on the basis of a survey consisting of 50 questions about the social and mental condition, medical history and previous treatment as well as the quality of sexual life before and after surgery. The scale used for the assessment of the quality of sex life consisted of 5 grades: very low, low, medium, high, very high. Thirty subjects (21 men and 9 women) took part in the survey. Ulcerative colitis (86.6%) was the most common reason for qualification for restorative proctectomy among the examined patients; less common reasons included familial adenomatous polyposis (13.3%) and synchronous colorectal cancer (3.3%). A vast majority of the surgeries had been performed after 10 years’ duration of ulcerative colitis, and the intestinal reservoir had been functioning for over a year at the time of the examination. In addition, the effect of taking steroids and the impact of early postoperative complications on the quality of sex life of patients was assessed. Results: High or very high sexual activity before surgery was reported by 46% of patients whereas low or very low quality was reported by 13%. The rest of the responders assessed their pre-operative sexual activity as average. After surgery, 23% of patients rated their sexual activity as high or very high while 36.6% of patients rated it as low or very low (P = 0.07). It was also noted that taking corticosteroids before surgery decreased the quality of sex life after surgery (P = 0.07 for activity, P = 0.04 for quality). None of the women surveyed used artificial moisturizing of intimate places during sex. Only 1 person stated that they started using artificial moisturization of intimate places after the procedure (P = 0.5). None of the men surveyed had used pharmacological agents to help them obtain an erection before surgery while as many as 33% of responders reported the need for their use after surgery (P = 0.008). Other postoperative sexual dysfunctions were also registered, such as dyspareunia (13.3%), sensory disorder within the intimate region, fecal incontinence, and urinary incontinence. Conclusions: To sum up, sexual activity and quality of sexual life deteriorated after RPC-IPAA in our patients.

Opis:
Although the long-term patient satisfaction rate after implantation of penile prosthesis (IPP) is high, there is still a large number of patients who are not satisfied. This review analyzes factors influencing areas that affect final patient and partner satisfaction and their sexual quality of life (SQoL). The PubMed database was searched between 01.2000 and 11.2021 for papers concerning penile implant surgery and its outcomes. There are multiple pre-, intra- and post-operative factors that influence patient satisfaction and couples’ SQoL. The pre-operative factors are proper patient and prosthesis selection. If the procedure is performed by a high-volume surgeon in a high-volume center according to the GIRFT model, then the risk of serious complications is diminished. A psychosexual therapist should collaborate with the surgeon in patient selection, the sexual education of the couple, reassuring them and recognizing that there are causes of sexual life dissatisfaction other than erectile dysfunction (ED). After IPP a therapist is closely involved in educating the couple about coping with the new situation. Patient satisfaction after IPP is attainable if patients are properly selected, the surgery proceeds without complications and there is close cooperation between the surgeon and psychosexual therapist.
Psychoseksuolog powinien współpracować z chirurgiem w wyborze pacjentów, uspokojeniu i edukacji seksualnej par oraz rozpoznaniu innych niż zaburzenia erekcji przyczyn niezadowolenia z życia seksualnego.

Gender equality is one of the categorical imperatives of universal human rights. However, today, in many national contexts, women’s rights and needs are not respected. The war in Bosnia and Herzegovina has shown the world how thin the line is between coexistence and hate, and what is more, it has shown how easy it is to use a woman’s body in political and war games and then forget about their sacrifice. The article is focused on the long-term effects of wartime sexual violence. Based on a quantitative and qualitative analysis of field research, the author wants to show how Bosniak women constantly suffer from sexual violence despite the end of the conflict.

Sexuality is a significant pillar of a romantic relationship, and sexual satisfaction is closely related to the stability of the relationship as well as satisfaction associated with it. The aim of this paper was to briefly characterize the sex life of Poles, especially regarding safe sex, sexual assertiveness and satisfaction with sexual life. A Poland-wide on-line survey was conducted between January and March 2019. 2205 anonymous answers were analyzed. To compare the knowledge of heterosexual and non-heterosexual persons, medical students were excluded from both groups. We identified three studied populations: heterosexuals excluding medical students, non-heterosexuals excluding medical students and medical students. Participants were asked for taking a stance to a few statements. The majority of respondents declared that their sexual contacts are always as safe as they want and they can easily refuse sexual contact with another person. Furthermore, most of the respondents were also satisfied with their sex life, especially the group of medical students.

Opis:
Background. Personality factors have frequently been found to be associated with health risky behaviours although the findings are not always consistent and are rare in Central or Eastern Europe. Holding optimistic beliefs was found as a protective factor as women at the highest risk for HIV demonstrated lower self-esteem, less optimistic and fatal views concerning the future. Similarly, high levels of dispositional self-regulation among students, decreased alcohol use, alcohol-related negative consequences and sexual risk-taking. This study aims to explore and compare the associations between self-regulation, life-optimism and sexual risk behaviour in young adults from Hungary, Lithuania and Slovakia. Material and methods. Online questionnaires concerning health- related behaviour including sexual behaviour, optimism and self-regulation were distributed to first year university students in Hungary (N=819, 66% females), Lithuania (N=928, 70% females) and Slovakia (N=807, 75% females). Multinomial logistic regression was performed in SPSS 16. Results. Selfregulation was associated with sexual risk behaviour as students with higher self-regulation were less likely to report high risk or moderate-risk sexual behaviour compared to those with lower self-regulation. Life optimism was not associated with any type of sexual risk behaviour. Conclusions. Taking into consideration our results on young adults as well as those conducted by others, we may see stability in self-regulation as a vital factor which may affect one’s sexual behaviour during adolescence and young adulthood. As for intervention or prevention programmes, enhancing self–regulation result in reduction of substance use and sexual risk behaviour. However, such intervention should be done in early adolescence.
Wprowadzenie. Materiał i metody. Rozpowszechniono kwestionariusze online dotyczące zachowań związanych ze zdrowiem, w tym zachowań seksualnych, optymizmu i samoregulacji wśród studentów pierwszego roku na Węgrzech (N = 819, 66% kobiet), Litwie (N = 928, 70% kobiet) i Słowacji (N = 807, 75% kobiet). Przeprowadzono wielomianową regresję logistyczną przy użyciu SPSS 16. Wyniki. Samoregulacja wśród badanych studentów wykazuje powiązania z ryzykownymi zachowaniami seksualnymi. Studenci z większą samoregulacją rzadziej zgłaszali zachowanie seksualne o wysokim lub umiarkowanym ryzyku w porównaniu z osobami z niższą samoregulacją. Nie odnotowano powiązania optymizmu z jakimkolwiek rodzajem zachowań w zakresie seksualności w każdym kraju. Wnioski.

The evolutionary function of love is to create a strong bond between the partners with reproduction in view. In order to achieve this goal, humans use various sexual/reproductive strategies, which have evolved due to specific reproductive benefits. The use of particular strategies depends on many factors but one of the most important is early childhood experiences, on which life history theory (LHT) focuses. John Lee (1973) identified 6 basic love styles: eros, ludus, storge, pragma, agape, and mania. Our goal was to check whether love styles may be treated as sexual/reproductive strategies in the context of LHT – slow or fast strategy. In our study (N = 177) we found that people who prefer the slow reproductive strategy are inclined to show passionate, pragmatic and friendly love, and those who prefer the fast strategy, treated love as a game. A low level of environmental stress in childhood results in preferring eros, storge and agape love styles, belonging to the slow strategy, and a high one results in preferring ludus, which belongs to the fast strategy. People representing eros, storge or pragma styles have restricted sociosexual orientation so they prefer long-term relationships, whereas those with the ludus style are people with unrestricted orientation, preferring short-term relationships. Besides, storge, agape and pragma seem to determine preferring qualities connected with parental effort in one’s partner, mania – with mating effort, and eros – with both kinds of effort. No correlation was found between the love style and the number of children.

Aim of research. The main goal of this paper is to analyse the phenomenon of prostitution among university students. The study presents the scale of this phenomenon and its causes. Methodology. The study was conducted among 1,877 university students. Respondents were interviewed through an online panel survey. Students spoke about their own experience in prostitution and shared thoughts about the approval for this phenomenon. Results and conclusions. Based on obtained answers, it was possible to identify conditioning for student prostitution, which encompasses biological, psychological, environmental, cultural, and economic factors. Moreover, students mentioned additional reasons for taking up prostitution: difficult financial situation during studies, above-average sex drive, laziness, and consumer mentality supported by the culture of promiscuity. It turned out that each of the mentioned factors may encourage students to become involved in prostitution. The analysis also drew attention to the lack of sexual education, conducive to risky sexual behaviours of young people. The research has shown that a large group of students exchange sex for money. Originality. The risky sexual behaviours of students are still an unexplored area of knowledge. Prostitution, due to its controversial nature, is treated as a taboo subject. The article proves that the phenomenon of student prostitution is common and requires a more in-depth analysis.

A second group of 200 middle-aged women (aged 45–55 years) who were working and undergoing treatment at Clinical Provincial Hospital No. 2 of St. Jadwiga Queen in Rzeszow, students of the University of the Third Age in Rzeszow, as well as women from the Post-graduate Education Centre of Nurses and Midwives in Rzeszow. The research was carried out in 2016 by means of a diagnostic survey using our own questionnaire. Results: As compared to the middle adulthood group, the women in the early adulthood group more frequently used items that diversify sex life, i.e. lubricants, massage oils, condoms, erotic lingerie, and handcuffs (p <0.001). In addition, women in the early adulthood group felt more sexually attractive than the middle adulthood group (p<0.001) and also preferred sexual modes of behaviour (e.g., clitoral stimulation, breasts stimulation, vaginal stimulation and oral stimulation) more frequently than middle adult women. Conclusions: Women in middle adulthood feel less sexually attractive than women in early adulthood. Women in middle adulthood could introduce factors that improve the quality of sexual intercourse during perimeno-pausal age, such as: lubricants, massage oils, stimulating condoms, and erotic lingerie.

Opis:
The article discusses the issue of freedom in the work of Czesław Milosz. This problem is analyzed in relation to prose, poetry, essay writing, journalism, as well as numerous interviews that Milosz gave throughout his whole life. The author of the article is particularly interested in Milosz’s attitude to the sexual revolution of 1968, which he observed as a professor at Berkley. The poet was not an indifferent witness to this event. He often referred to it, often returned to it, as the author shows, not without ambivalence.

Opis:
This paper draws on the author’s experience undertaking life history research with adults with histories of organized child sexual abuse. Organized abuse has been a particular flashpoint for controversy in debates over child abuse and memory, but it is also a very harmful and traumatic form of sexual violence. Research participants described how, in childhood, threats and trauma kept them silent about their abuse, but in adulthood this silence was reinforced by the invalidation that accompanied their efforts to draw attention to the harms that have befallen themselves and others. This paper will examine the role of qualitative research in addressing a form of alterity whose defining characteristic is the silencing and dismissal of narrative.
