This paper touches problem of transportation pollution focusing on NOx reducing in the India. There were India country chosen for study as the second populated country and most polluted cities in the world. As from statistics, it is known that more than 65% of Indian cars are old and they are the main reason of air pollution. Most of the old cars do not have any control measures for eliminating deadliest gases. Dumping the old cars is not possible, as the poor owns most of the old cars. For eliminating the pollution from old cars, the possible remedy is to control the emission of pollutants. Comparing to all gases in exhaust, nitrogen oxides are the dangerous one. It can may cause up to death. The best method to control the NOx gas is EGR (Exhaust Gas Recirculation) valves. This research mainly focuses on the possible ways of installing EGR in old engines and fabricate an EGR in one of the Indian cars. Maruti Suzuki 800 is best of for fabricating EGR, as it is a base model and most sold Indian car. As the result, there tremendous decreasing in NOx emission also the emission CO2 was reduced. The investigation about fabricating EGR in old vehicle results a positive output after calculated the cost of the fabrication, time consumption, work challenges and other facts. As Indian government adopt this concept, they can reduce the pollution from all types of vehicles to a great extend in few years of time with low investment.

Opis:
Retrofitting heating, ventilation, and air conditioning (HVAC) systems in existing buildings and applying energy-efficient technologies can significantly reduce energy consumption and greenhouse gases emissions. In this work, two options of HVAC retrofitting were proposed and discussed for the existing heating system of school of engineering at the University of Jordan as a case study. The experimental tests showed that only one of the three diesel boilers work normally while the other two boilers are not efficient, with actual efficiency of 25%. The first retrofitting was to upgrade the existing heating system to a liquefied petroleum gas (LPG) boiler system with estimated annual saving of 29,757 Jordanian dinar (JOD), and a payback period of 3.9 years. The second option for retrofitting was a new HVAC system for the building including heating and air conditioning with a variable refrigerant flow (VRF) system and heat pump chiller. The estimated cost showed that the VRF system was the lowest one in running cost in winter. The diesel boilers had the highest greenhouse gas emissions with an average value of 377.3 tons of CO2 per year, while LPG boilers achieved the second highest emissions of around 279 tons of CO2 per year, whereas the heat pump chiller in winter produced 199 tons of CO2 and the VRF system emitted 180 tons in winter. The LCCA economic analysis was performed for the proposed systems, showing that the LPG boilers system was more feasible than the diesel boilers system, while the VRF system was more feasible than the heat pump chiller system.

Opis:
It is not possible to meet the current type approval standards for the exhaust emission from internal combustion engines without the use of exhaust aftertreatment systems. An additional problem is in the increased emissions in real driving conditions compared to the values obtained in type approval tests. The current legislative trends are not limited to just lowering the emission limits for new vehicles, but also actions aimed at reducing the impact of vehicles that are already in operation. One of such actions is known as retrofitting, described as retrofitting older structures with modern exhaust aftertreatment systems, without the need for any changes in the engine design. Research has shown that the emission of toxic compounds from agricultural machinery engines can reach values up to 30 times higher than those of an average passenger vehicle. This problem has been noticed by the legislators and regulations concerning operated non-road machines are successively being introduced. Such restrictions are already present in the Berlin city center for example, where all vehicles operated within the given zone must meet the Stage 3b emission limits. Retrofitting is a multi-stage process. The article discusses the issue of performing this process, starting with NRMM (Non-Road Mobile Machinery) emission measurements, through simulation studies of a virtual model of a particulate filter in CFD software (Computational Fluid Dynamics), to verify its operation in an agricultural tractor, i.e. one of the most numerous vehicle types within the non-road vehicle group in Poland.

This report examines the feasibility and impact of retrofitting the bulbous bow on a general cargo ship, in terms of the energy efficiency operational index (EEOI), in the areas of Western Europe and the Eastern Mediterranean. Three ship forms were developed and analysed: with a bulbous bow, without a bulbous bow, and with a modified bulbous bow. The goal in developing the ship forms and conducting the analysis was to achieve minimal differences in the ship’s characteristics with the same volumetric displacement, aided by PolyCAD software. A route was selected between two ports: Varna and Rotterdam. The labour intensity of the bulbous bow retrofitting process was evaluated and approximate values of labours costs and cost for the task were determined. The results obtained for resistance during ship motion, EEOI, and fuel consumption reductions, or increases, were compared against the retrofitting values. The return cost of retrofitting is evaluated and measured in terms of fuel saved.

Opis:
The article presents the results of measurements of selected thermal, moisture and mechanical properties of thermal insulating plaster, which is one of the alternatives to traditional methods of retrofitting the walls of buildings under conservation protection. An insulating plaster based on perlite was tested. Its thermal conductivity, vapor permeability and compression strength were determined. Images of the tested plaster under the microscope, at a magnification of 10-45x, were also taken. Through computer simulations, the possibility of improving the energy efficiency of an educational building by applying a layer of such plaster on external walls was determined. Changes in the heat loss structure were analyzed, and the obtained results were compared with the effectiveness of reducing heat loss through the walls using a traditional thermal insulation material. It turned out that the thermal conductivity coefficient of the tested plaster obtained by measurement was 0.0877 W/(m∙K), which confirmed the value declared by the manufacturer. Application of thermal insulating plaster with a thickness of 5 cm on the walls of the analyzed building, with other partitions of good thermal quality, reduced its energy demand by over 20%.

Opis:
The paper discusses the need of additional equipment of trucks which are already being in use in Poland with the devices of the indirect visibility which enable to observe much bigger area in the neighbourhood of the vehicle. A large number of accidents are caused by drivers of larger vehicles who are not aware that other road users are very close to or beside their own vehicle. These accidents are often related to a change of direction at crossings, junctions or roundabouts, when drivers fail to detect other road users in the blind spots, which exist in the immediate area around their vehicles. The increase of the indirect visibility from the driver's seat improves safety of the participants in the road traffic. Over 400 people lost their life in the EU in of these accidents. Most of the victims of such accidents are pedestrians or two-wheelers, a particularly vulnerable category of road users. Implementation of the EU Directive 2003/97 (which is obligatory for the new vehicles) to the vehicles earlier registered can be done by replacement and installment of the new mirrors which contain bigger areas. This paper shows the results of the research on the independence of minimum dimensions (s, w) of mirrors class V and its placement on values of radius of curvature. It contains much bigger area than it is due to demands. Author also made a proposition on how to solve the problem of the limited visibility on the inclined crossing of roads and on enlarged crossing while turning left.

Opis:
Carbon fiber reinforced polymers (CFRP) have been widely used for retrofitting of reinforced concrete members over the past three decades. This study presents the experimental results of four reinforced concrete beams retrofitted with CFRP and tested under four point monotonic loading. CFRP strips (Sika Carbo-Dur S812) and wraps (Sika-Wrap 230C) were used in two different patterns to evaluate their effect on the flexural behavior of RC beams. Two beams were first tested until their ultimate capacity, retrofitted with the application of CFRP and re-tested again, and two beams were retrofitted before the application of any load. The CFRP strips provided in the middle one-third of the span with U-shaped anchorage at the ends enhanced the capacity of beams up to 15 percent. The stiffness of the beams were significantly increased as demonstrated by smaller displacement at the ultimate load. However, the CFRP wraps provided without the anchorage didn’t enhance the strength due to pre-mature debonding.

Opis:
The Geothermal Communities (GEOCOM) project (www.geothermalcommunities.eu) was launched in 2010 with a vision to increase the visibility of direct heat applications of geothermal energy throughout Europe, where most attention has been paid to power generation alternatives of the same source recently. This 11 million Euro project, funded by the European Union’s Seventh Framework Programme for Research and Technological Development (FP7), demonstrates a wide array of research and demonstration components to provide not only firsthand experience for the communities involved in the project, but also to feed the international scientific community with valuable results related to the currently pressing geothermal matters such as reinjection into sandstone reservoirs and transboundary utilisation of geothermal aquifers. Demonstration actions, including geothermal district heating system development, integration of geothermal heating with other renewable energy sources (RES) and energy efficiency measures such as complementary retrofitting actions on selected buildings, are implemented at three demonstration sites in Hungary, Italy and Slovakia. This broad geographical coverage enables us to implement different technologies which suit the local needs the best and at the same time increases the replication potential of the project’s actions. The innovative elements range from complete utilisation of the inherent natural gas content of the thermal water (520l/m3 @85% CH4) via CHP engines in Hungary through upgrading and extending a 30-year-old geothermal district heating system to modern standards in Slovakia to building a brand new geothermal loop to supply the citizens of the medieval village of Montieri in the heart of the Larderello area in Italy. Additional municipalities from Poland, Macedonia, Romania and Serbia with geothermal energy potential participate in GEOCOM as observer communities and are keeping a close eye on the project’s progress and getting prepared to initiate their own geothermal programs based on GEOCOM’s results. This aspect helps to spread direct geothermal applications further and into countries and regions with traditional geothermal features (e.g. hot springs) but lacking the knowledge to exploit them for their own benefits. All the demonstration actions of the project are supported by socio-economic research, which runs in parallel with them in order to monitor the public acceptance of such interventions and the public opinion in general about geothermal energy. Without fully understanding the key driving factors at communities with such potential, the results cannot be hoped to spread and become popular. Also a full scale monitoring campaign has been introduced (with staggering results) in order to gather data on the delivered technical components, thus ensuring the availability of tangible data on the operation and savings achieved. Later on, such data can support decision makers who are willing to engage such ventures to make solid and justified decisions for the good of their community.
W ramach przeprowadzonych prac zmodernizowano m.in. istniejący 30-letni geotermalny system ciepłowniczy w Galancie na Słowacji i przystosowano go do nowoczesnych standardów, we Włoszech wybudowano od podstaw nową sieć celem dostarczenia ciepła mieszkańcom średniowiecznego miasteczka Montieri położonego w samym sercu rejonu Lardarello. Innowacyjnym elementem było również całkowite odzyskanie naturalnego gazu – metanu zawartego w wodzie geotermalnej (520 L/m3 @85% CH4), który zasilił silniki kogeneracyjne dla stacji pomp ciepła. W projekcie brały ponadto udział miasta z Polski, Macedonii, Rumuni i Serbii, posiadające potencjał geotermalny.

In this paper, based on the RC frame structure of an industrial building, the finite element model of the structure is developed, according to the Chinese code for seismic design of buildings [9]. Considering the lack of seismic performance, the buckling restrained brace (BRB) is adopted for seismic retrofitting, and various configurations of buckling restrained support are considered for reinforcement. The elastic response spectrum analysis (RSA) and direct integration nonlinear time history analyses (NL-TH) are carried out for the frame structure before and after reinforcement using ETABS finite element software. From the joints displacement, inter-story displacement, inter-story shear force, acceleration, energy dissipation, and other aspects of the seismic response of the strengthened structure and the non-strengthened structure, the comparison has been made. The effect of buckling restrained support and common support on the existing building structure is verified through analytical modeling. After reinforcement, there is a 40%, 39.3%, 40%, 36.4%, and 38.3% reduction in the first period of vibration after the building is strengthened by inverted BRB, V BRB, two-story BRB, single BRB, and ordinary steel braces, respectively. Strengthening of the structure by buckling restrained braces and ordinary steel braces both decrease the original building displacement by more than 50% from the first to the fourth floor. Under severe earthquakes, the use of BRB reduced the column shear by 46.6%; similarly, the incorporation of ordinary steel braces reduced the column shear by 4.72%. It is concluded that using buckling restrained braces will increase the vertical stiffness of the structure to a very high extent.

Opis:
Heat integration by pinch method is used to modify the heat exchanger network of an industrial ethylene glycol plant. The aim is to reduce the energy cost by operating the plant close to the maximum energy recovery. Pinch analysis identified a pinch temperature of 483 K, a minimum heating utility of 13,490.9 MJ/ton EO, and a minimum cooling utility of 25,697 MJ/ton EO. Using the pinch decomposition diagram and the standard procedure for matching hot and cold streams, a retrofit of the heat exchangers network is developed. The modified heat exchanger network reduces the external cooling duty by 45.5% and the external heating duty by 93.3%. This promising cost savings provide enough justification for restructuring the existing ethylene glycol plant. Moreover, an additional 6% reduction in the external cooling duty can be achieved by integrating the steam turbine below the pinch point.

New Diesel exhaust gas aftertreatment systems, with DPF*) and deNOx (mostly SCR) inline application are very important step towards zero emission Diesel fleet. Solid quality standards of those quite complex systems are urgently necessary to enable decisions by several authorities. The Swiss Federal Office of the Environment BAFU and the Swiss Federal Roads Office ASTRA decided to support further activities of VERT to develop appropriate testing procedures and to define the quality criteria. The present report informs about the international network project VERT *) dePN (de-activation, de-contamination, disposal of particles & NOx), which was started in Nov. 2006 with the objective to introduce the SCR-, or (DPF+SCR)-systems in the VERT verification procedure. Examples of results with some investigated systems are given. The most important statements are: - the investigated combined aftertreatment systems (DPF+SCR) for dynamic engine application efficiently reduce the target emissions with deNOx-efficiency up to 92% (if operated in the right temperature window) and filtration efficiency based on particle count up to 100%, - the average NOx conversion rate at transient operation (ETC) depends strongly on the exhaust gas temperature profile and the resulting urea dosing control, - the NP filtration efficiency, which is verified at stationary engine operation is perfectly valid also at the transient operation. The present results will be confirmed in the further project activities with other systems and with different testing cycles. A special attention will be paid to the operational profiles, which are representative for low emissions zones LEZ.

Opis:
Historic buildings are an essential component of the national heritage, constituting the fundamental determinants of the cultural identity of each society. The protection and conservation of monuments are a manifestation of care and evidence of their responsibility. The way owners deal with historic buildings has its specificity. Management, protection, and sharing should follow the conservation rules defined by law and good practices. After World War II, due to Poland's historical, political, and socio-economic transformations, some historic buildings gradually degraded and lost their original functions. Devastated monuments are often considered redundant by society. Effective use of them for new functions allows society to preserve unique elements of the landscape and develop the economic and social potential of the monument's surroundings. The renovation and adaptation of monuments to a new function should be preceded by a multi-level analysis allowing for the sustainable revitalisation of the building. The diversity of types of monuments, their state of preservation, location, and the form of ownership significantly affect the procedure. This article aims to present a holistic approach to the renovation of monuments and sustainable management of these objects. The concept is based on the results of questionnaire research and considers conservation guidelines, pro-environmental solutions, utility value and the socio-economic potential of the monument. The survey conducted with the owners of the monuments described in the article is the basis for determining the conditions for the sustainable revitalisation of monuments. The survey results will help develop a management model for this process. Sustainable revitalisation is shown on an example of an adaptation palace in Rzuchów for cultural and scientific purposes.

Opis:
The current predominant obstacle for the implementation of energy retrofitting projects at the neighbourhood level is attributable to restricted funding options, which is especially relevant for the expensive renovation of buildings of cultural heritage importance. The first aim of the article is to articulate and identify the main characteristics which influence the funding processes for energy retrofitting historic urban districts. The second objective is to build a comprehensive approach/procedural funding model based on these identified specifics/characteristics. The “energy performance contracting model for historical city centres” (EPCHC) is constructed with procedural processes (steps) associated with the main specific characteristics of urban central districts. The principal attributes which define and influence EPC in historical city centres are “district-level retrofitting”, the “multi-stakeholder approach” and “cultural heritage preservation”. First demonstrated are the benefits of the district level EPC’s “economy of scale”. Secondly, city centres are specific neighbourhoods with several public (municipal, governmental) and private entities, necessitating a particular tailor-made EPC approach is necessary for each stakeholder. Thirdly, the article focuses on the issue of higher retrofitting costs because as a result of historical building status and finding an optimal solution to overcome the conflict between sustainable renovation and cultural preservation. The procedural model for EPCHC in historical city centres offers step-by-step guidelines with suggestions to be followed in order to approach and involve all the various stakeholders. EPCHC could open a new perspective on district green retrofitting and could facilitate municipalities’ decision-making processes upon deciding to retrofit historical central districts.
