Cloud-based computational environments can offer elastic and flexible services to wide audiences. Małopolska Educational Cloud was originally developed to support the day-to-day collaboration of geographically scattered schools with universities which organized online classes, led by university teachers, as an amendment to face-to-face teaching. Due to the centralized management and ubiquitous access, both the set of services provided by MEC and their usage patterns can be adjusted rapidly. In this paper we show how – during the COVID-19 pandemic – the flexibility of Małopolska Educational Cloud was leveraged to speed up the transition from in-class to remote teaching, both in the classes and schools which were already involved in the MEC project, and newly added ones. We also discuss the actions that were required to support the smooth transition and draw conclusions for the future.

This qualitative study aims to explore the challenges of remote learning during the COVID-19 pandemic in rural and urban Jamaica, from the perspectives of both students and teachers. Data was collected from 20 teachers and 21 students through virtual and face-to-face interviews, questionnaires, and observations of virtual lessons. While there were more positive impacts of remote learning than negative, challenges such as technical issues, attendance, digital competencies, environmental disturbances, unresponsive students, and physical pain were identified. The problem is that teachers and students are frustrated with the challenges of remote learning and are in need of a solution. The study aims to provide assistance to those facing such difficulties and to contribute to future policy decision-making. The results will be used to produce a report that initiates some level of assistance for students and teachers and informs future policy and decision-makers.

Global research studies on distance education in foreign language learning focus primarily on secondary schools or higher education. The paper examines primary school foreign language teachers’ (n=119) perceptions of distance teaching during the COVID-19 pandemic compared to face-to-face education. The purpose of the study was to investigate the quality, achieved learning outcomes, advantages and obstacles faced by FL teachers in remote teaching. Based on the e-questionnaire, our study indicated that distance FL teaching was more challenging and stressful than classroom teaching because primary school students were not responsive to technology and needed parental guidance. Primary school students rely on cognitive and socio-emotional support from the FL teacher.

The article compares the results of the research conducted at the end of the winter semester 2019/2020 with the results from March 2021 as an extended teaching for the validity of extending the teaching offer for modern language studies by including innovative solutions using distance learning methods and techniques, with additional comments at the end of 2021. The opinions of 50 second-year students on the usefulness and effectiveness of IT innovations in lectures, seminars and practical language learning exercises were surveyed. The research showed that the pandemic situation verified students’ perceptions of the advantages and disadvantages of remote working. The data are also commented on by lecturers. It turns out that in all three types of classes, the opinions of students and staff range from moderately neutral at the beginning of 2020 towards teaching innovations, through more sceptical in March 2021 after the large-scale introduction of e-learning, to more favourable towards online innovations after a year of experience gained in 2021. Despite this general trend, there are considerable differences in the opinions of students and lecturers depending on the nature of the classes.
Artykuł porównuje wyniki badań przeprowadzone w końcu zimowego semestru 2019/2020 z wynikami z marca 2021 roku, na temat zasadności poszerzenia oferty dydaktycznej na studiach filologicznych o innowacyjne rozwiązania z wykorzystaniem metod i technik kształcenia na odległość. Zbadano opinie 50 studentów II roku dotyczące przydatności i skuteczności informatycznych innowacji na wykładach, seminariach i ćwiczeniach z praktycznej nauki języków obcych. Wynika z nich, iż pandemia zweryfikowała wyobrażenia studentów nt. zalet i wad zdalnej pracy.

The digitization of the media, their software and hardware combination of computers and the development of networks and their dissemination have made distance learning the subject of research, implementation of practical and scientific reflection once again. Those actions are promoted not only by the development of ICT, but also by progressive globalization, demographic changes and economic and cultural challenges. The scientific discourse is also a part of Polish experiences. The previous treatment of the subject of this paper were historical in nature, fragmentary or were descriptions of individual experiments and experiences of individual universities. Presented approach has not only a synthetic character, but also provides an outline of the original, the Polish concept of teaching - blended learning.

The findings presented in this paper are part of the comprehensive research carried out within the “Diversification of Social Attitudes in the Sphere of Educational Services during a Pandemic” project. This study examines the challenges that emerged during remote learning, focusing on parents’ involvement in their children’s learning process, as perceived by school principals. The conclusions are based on questionnaire interviews with principals of 36 randomly selected schools throughout the Wielkopolska region (Poland). The study spanned the second semester of the 2019/2020 school year and the first semester of 2020/2021. Several issues were identified in the interviews, including communication difficulties with students, lack of skills of teachers and students to work remotely, insufficient IT infrastructure at school and home, financial deficits impeding the purchase of new equipment, and a decline in students’ mental health. These problems were primarily related to the family (home) situation of students and the participation of parents in solving these problems. No significant spatial differences were identified with respect to the opinions of school principals from different poviats of the Wielkopolska region. However, differences in opinions were observed depending on the level of the school. A distinctive issue raised mainly by primary school principals was the participation of parents in lessons and their tendency to complete tasks or even write tests for children, as well as the frequent baseless excuses for absences and unfinished tasks. In contrast, principals from both general and vocational secondary schools generally agreed that parental assistance was marginal.

Opis:
The study aimed to explore parents' experiences of engaging with their children's remote education during the first wave of the COVID-19 pandemic, focusing on the issues of the family-school partnership. The question posed here asks how the family-school relationship was negotiated as well as the role of parents and the role of schools. This line of inquiry is unexplored but vital to understand better the tacit underpinnings of remote education practices and the unobvious potential of parents in the schools in times of crisis. Understanding these relationships provides insights into the processes that occur when schools hastily change their way of teaching while impacting the family environment. This participatory, qualitative case study used data from open-ended questions in an electronic survey, with responses from 104 parents affiliated with a public elementary school in a metropolitan area. In addition, data from the school's electronic registry were included. The qualitative analyses applied constructivist grounded theory strategies. During qualitative analyses of parental narratives, categories were identified that described parents' actions as negotiations conducted with the school. These negotiations pertained to the definition of the situation (characterizing the practices implemented by the school), the comprehension of teaching, including remote teaching, the level and nature of the parents’ involvement in pandemic education, and the extent of their (desired) influence on the shape of implemented solutions. The research uncovered the taken-for-granted vision of the school under the study as an expert entity capable and entitled to independently address even extraordinary challenges without consulting the stakeholders themselves. This vision was challenged by parents. Their initiation of negotiations was considered a manifestation of empowerment and emancipation. Further research on empowering practices of parents as partners, especially concerning changes in educational practices in extraordinary situations.

This paper presents the results of a study that explored the experiences of adult educators during the COVID-19 pandemic. This online survey was conducted in June 2020 and included directors and teachers in adult education from various institutions in Slovenia. Tutors at Slovenian Third-Age Universities and other associations that provided adult education were also included. The aim of our study was to examine how distance education was implemented during the pandemic, using the concept of ‘emergency remote teaching’ (Hodges, 2020). The study sample included 30 directors of adult education institutions and 124 teachers or tutors. The results showed that organisations providing adult education responded during the lockdown by providing adults with the opportunity to continue their education through distance learning. However, this was not the case for all of adult education programmes. Mostly language courses and formal education were offered. The results show that most adult educators quickly adapted to the new working conditions, but that teaching approaches were rather static and asynchronous teaching solutions. An analysis of the problems teachers faced and the support they needed has shown that action is needed to remove the obstacles to the future provision of adult education as much as possible.

Once COVID-19 pandemic struck the world in spring 2020 and continued for two more years, it exerted an enormous (negative and tragic, unfortunately) impact on the way people lived, worked and studied. New ways of coping with apparently well-established and familiar tasks had to be invented, often at quite a cost of time, money and effort. One could even say that in many domains the pandemic moved back the development of humankind a number of years backward. The purpose of the paper will be to highlight the way Communicative Language Teaching was implemented in the reality of online teaching in the first (March-June 2020) and second wave (November 2020-June 2021) the pandemic in Poland. The paper reports upon a study in which primary and secondary school teachers’ perceptions towards teaching communication in the online medium, lesson models used as well as opportunities and limitations of different online platforms in terms of their suitability for organising communicative tasks were gained insight into through observation, lesson plan analysis and interview.

Feedback is a complex issue that can be discussed from many perspectives. It can be given by teachers to students, by students to teachers, by students to students, by teachers to teachers. Moreover, nowadays thanks to technology our students can be offered automatic feedback that will be given to them immediately upon completing a task. Even though there are several texts dealing with feedback that students receive from teachers, it seems that not much research has been done on other types of feedback. This article aims to start a discussion on the different types of feedback as well as to show ways in which technology can be useful in terms of giving and eliciting feedback.
