Opis:
The concept of growth poles is well established in regional economics. It can be considered in different scales, and big cities are one of them. In Poland, these cities are developing relatively fast. One of the questions that appear in this context is, if this growth can be connected with the growth of their regions, i.e. if they can be regarded as regional growth poles. To address it, the aim of the paper is to test if some selected big metropolitan areas of Poland work as poles of growth for their regions. This is performed using the Granger-causality test, which is one of the methods used to explore, at least in its specific sense, the causal relations between variables. The study shows, that Poznań, Rzeszów and Wrocław (out of fifteen big Polish cities) can be considered the growth poles for their regions. The results are useful to grasp the contemporary understanding of the concept, as well as the specific conditions of Polish regional growth.

Opis:
This article presents the findings of a two-year research project1. The main aim of the project was to analyse the role and growth possibilities of subregional centres in Poland, taking into account polarisation processes and a knowledge-based economy. The cities chosen for their degree of competitiveness and growth possibilities were those of over 40000 inhabitants, not situated in close proximity to capitals of Polish regions. Apart from that questionnaires were sent by post to all previously identified subregional growth poles and municipalities of their surroundings. Moreover, ten subregional growth poles were chosen to be analysed as case studies. Six fragmentary hypotheses were verified in the research: historical hypothesis, metropolitan hypothesis, hypothesis of internal resources, networking hypothesis, hypothesis of strong surroundings, administrative-political hypothesis.

Opis:
This study was carried out on the basis of the original documents discovered during the research carried out in the Archives of the National Council for the Study of Security Archives in Bucharest (ACNSAS), Romania. The analysis of these documents shows us the fact that the Poles from Suceava county (Romania) were monitored by the Securitate during the nationalist-communist regime of Nicolae Ceaușescu. Officially, Romania and Poland were allies within the political-military alliance called the Warsaw Treaty Organization. The totalitarian regime led by Nicolae Ceaușescu was extremely conservative and restrictive towards the groups of cohabiting nationalities (national minorities), repressing and discouraging any form of expression of ethnic-national and religious identity. The Poles were no exception to the measures adopted by the regime, although the Hungarians were especially targeted by the policies of the communist regime in Romania. The documents analyzed in the present study reflect the official position of the regime towards the Polish community in Suceava County, as well as the efforts made by the diplomats of the Republic of Poland accredited in Romania to stimulate the efforts of their compatriots to preserve their language, traditions and school without the process of ethnic homogenization. In this case, the Roman Catholic Church, the school, the teachers of Polish ethnicity were the opinion leaders of the Polish communities in Solonețu Nou, Pleșa and Poiana Micului.

In Opole Silesia there live a combination of people describing themselves as Poles, Germans and Silesians. Young people there have to deal with that mix, being influenced by such forces as globalization. The purpose of this research was to discover how youth feel and understand their nationality and what stereotypes they share. The analysis consisted of several tasks. Students had to describe themselves by national and ethnic categories. They were asked how they felt about Germans and which stereotypes they found to be true or false. The paper includes analysis from earlier research on this topic.

Opis:
This article presents a two-denominational village community in central Poland (Roman Catholics and followers of the Old Catholic Mariavite Church). The author strives to combine an anthropological interpretation of her field studies with a broader historical and social perspective. Mariavitism emerged fromRoman Catholicism a hundred years ago. Today it no longer provokes the spontaneous social sanctions of the followers of the mother Church. The structural dichotomy, indistinguishable in everyday life, has been channelled in the local political division. Celebrations of holidays in the village public space are a site of fractional rivalry between political actors and they also serve as a symbolic means of expression for different social forces. Because of the dense local relations and symbols and their interpretations, the local community is easily manipulated politically and this is weakening their civic activity.

Opis:
The purpose of this article is to present the analysis of the election results of Lietuvos lenkų rinkimų akcija-Kriščioniškų šeimų sąjunga (LLRA-KŠS, Electoral Action of Poles in Lithuania-Christian Families Alliance) in Lithuania’s Parliamentary election 2016. The article presents a short review of the development of Lithuanian-Polish relationship. Several new events took place before Parliamentary election 2016 and had a certain impact on it. First of all, constituency borders were changed in Lithuania, what in general was very advantageous for LLRA-KŠS. Secondly, geopolitical and security situation in Russia changed dramatically because of its aggression in Ukraine and it also revealed prokremlin’s orientation of LLRA-KŠS that in turn had a very negative impact on the party’s image. Probably due to this LLRA-KŠS received about 10,000 votes less. This drop was most significant in Vilnius city but had an immaterial effect in the constituencies controlled by LLRA-KŠS. Nevertheless, the election reveals another important fact that voters in Vilnius district value not only candidates' nationalities (as it might be expected) but also their origin and bonds with local communities.

Let $r_n* ∈ ℛ_{nn}$ be the best rational approximant to $f(x) = x^α$, 1 > α > 0, on [0,1] in the uniform norm. It is well known that all poles and zeros of $r_n*$ lie on the negative axis $ℝ_{<0}$. In the present paper we investigate the asymptotic distribution of these poles and zeros as n → ∞. In addition we determine the asymptotic distribution of the extreme points of the error function $e_n = f - r_n*$ on [0,1], and survey related convergence results.

Opis:
Let ⨍ be an analytic function on a compact subset K of the complex plane ℂ, and let $r_n(z)$ denote the rational function of degree n with poles at the points ${b_{ni}}^{n}_{i=1}$ and interpolating ⨍ at the points ${a_{ni}}^{n}_{i=0}$. We investigate how these points should be chosen to guarantee the convergence of $r_n$ to ⨍ as n → ∞ for all functions ⨍ analytic on K. When K has no "holes" (see [8] and [3]), it is possible to choose the poles ${b_{ni}}_{i,n}$ without limit points on K. In this paper we study the case of general compact sets K, when such a separation is not always possible. This fact causes changes both in the results and in the methods of proofs. We consider also the case of functions analytic in open domains. It turns out that in our general setting there is no longer a "duality" ([8], Section 8.3, Corollary 2) between the poles and the interpolation points.

Opis:
The article presents the activity of Poles in Great Britain in the 20th century, beginning with the end of World War II, when a large group of Polish refugees and veterans settled in the UK. In 1947, the Federation of Poles was established to represent Polish community in Great Britain. The Association of Polish Women (1946) and the Relief Society for Poles (1946) were also formed at the same time. The article shows the involvement of the Polish community in Great Britain in the context of Polish history. This involvement included the organisation of anti-communist protests, carrying out various actions to inform people about the situation in Poland, organising material aid, supporting Poland at the time of the system transformation, and supporting Poland’s accession to the European Union. Over the decades, the Polish community in Great Britain has managed to set up numerous veterans’ and social organisations, Polish schools, it also built churches in order to preserve Polish culture abroad.
Pokazane zostało zaangażowanie brytyjskiej Polonii w kontekście historii Polski, które realizowano poprzez organizowanie protestów antykomunistycznych,  prowadzenie różnego rodzaju akcji informujących o sytuacji w Polsce, organizowanie pomocy materialnej, wspieranie Polski w momencie transformacji ustrojowej, wspieranie przystąpienia Polski do Unii Europejskiej. Na przestrzeni dekad Polonia w Wielkiej Brytanii zdołała powołać liczne organizacje kombatanckie i społeczne, polskie szkoły, budować kościoły w celu zachowania polskiej kultury na obczyźnie.
