Opis:
The study aims to build a model for the assessment of soil compaction processes, which take place under the influence of individual components of the skidding system such as a forwarder and a log being moved over the terrain. This aim is relevant in the context of forest preservation and ecological footprint-related issues. The model of a single log impact on the soil is based on establishing calculation formulas for determining soil compaction factors and shelterbelt size. The efficiency of the model was assessed on different soil categories and compared to experimental findings. The value of relative soil compaction within the trail boundary and the size rs of the maximum compaction area in the radial direction from the track, the width of the shelterbelt of undergrowth or cut-to-length root system were estimated based on the initial contact parameters.

Opis:
The main aim of this study was to determine the morphology, physical and chemical properties of permafrost-affected soils under different types of tundra in the central part of Spitsbergen. This is a preliminary part of detailed studies focused on the relationship between tundra vegetation and permafrost-affected soils in the Spitsbergen. The obtained results indicate that all the studied soils represent an early stage of formation and the main soil-forming process present in these soils is cryoturbation. Most of the studied soils are shallow and contain a high content of coarse rock fragments. Tundra vegetation type plays controlling role in the development and structure of surface soil horizons. All the studied soils are characterized by loamy texture and acidic or slightly acidic reaction, and these properties are not very different under various tundra vegetation types. The contents of soil organic matter are strongly dependent on the type of tundra vegetation. The highest soil organic matter content occurs at sites with well-developed vegetation such as heath and wet moss tundra. The high carbon-to-nitrogen ratio for the surface soil horizons of the majority of the studied soils indicates that organic matter is poorly decomposed under all the studied tundra vegetation types. This is most likely related to low activity of soil microorganisms in the harsh High Arctic environment. However, the lowest carbon-to-nitrogen ratio was noted for surface soil horizons at sites covered with Arctic meadow, and this indicates that there occur the optimum conditions for soil organic matter decomposition.

Opis:
In the last Vistulian glacial period, the profiles of periglacial perstructions and the profiles of old cryosols were formed in the extra glacial and gradually released from retreating continental glacier regions, originally in conditions of over 6-8 ka existing arctic desert before approximately 14.5 ka, and then from 14.5 to 10.5 ka BP, in the changing short rhythms of glacier deserts, shrub and park tundras as well as in short lasting pine-birch and birch forests. The whole profile thickness of the remaning periglacial horizons of the pleistocene paleosoils at the earth surface consists of a sequence or series of periglacial frost perstruction zones. In the cryogenic perstruction process of surface and subsurface sediment layers in the periglacial environment there were diagnostic horizons - cryosideric - crBv, cryoargillic - crBt, and cryospodic - crBk formed. Their localisation in the perstruction profile, in the soil horizons profile and the grain size profile, with readily recognisable associations of cold climate characteristics, may be used for quantification and diagnosis of rusty and parabrown paleosoils in the framework of superordinatektaxonomic unit of paleocryosols.

Opis:
Thermophysical properties of frozen soil have a great influence on the quality of cast-in-place concrete piles. In this paper, the embedded concrete temperature monitoring system is used to test the variation law of the concrete temperature during the construction of the bored pile. Thermophysical properties of permafrost around piles are tested. Based on the theory of three-phase unsteady heat conduction of soil, the influence of specific heat capacity, thermal conductivity, thermal diffusivity, and latent heat of phase transformation on the temperature change of a concrete pile is systematically studied. The thermal parameter is obtained which exerts the most significant influence on the temperature field. According to the influence degree of frozen soil on pile temperature, the order from high to low is thermal conductivity, thermal diffusivity, latent heat of phase change, and specific heat capacity. The changes in pile wall temperature caused by the change of these properties range between 2.60–10.97◦C, 1.49– 9.39◦C, 2.16–2.36◦C, and 0.24–3.45◦C, respectively. The change percentages of parameters vary between 35.77–47.12%, 12.22–40.20%, 12.46–32.25%, and 3.83–20.31%, respectively. Therefore, when designing and constructing concrete foundation piles, the influence of the thermal conductivity of frozen soil on concrete pile temperature should be considered first. The differences between the simulated and measured temperature along the concrete pile in the frozen soil varying with the respective thermal properties are: –2.99– 7.98◦C, –1.89–4.99◦C, –1.20–1.99◦C, and –1.76–1.27◦C. Polyurethane foam and other materials with small thermal conductivity can be added around the pile to achieve pile insulation.
