With the help of structural parameters and elastic constants obtained previously in our work (S. Daoud, N. Boiud, N. Lebga, J. Optoelectron. Adv. Mater. 16, 207 (2014)), different empirical formulae were successfully used to investigate: equation of state, the isotropic shear modulus, the Young modulus, the Cauchy ratio, the Born ratio, the Poisson ratio, the Pugh ratio, the Kleinman parameter, and the converse piezoelectric coefficient of the aggregate AlP material with cubic zinc-blende structure under pressure up to experimental pressure of phase transition (9.5 GPa). In addition, the Debye temperature at equilibrium volume was predicted, the result obtained is in excellent agreement compared to the experimental ones, the deviation is less than 1.4%.

Nano-size β-tricalcium phosphate powders with average grain size of 80 nm were prepared by the wet chemical precipitation method with calcium nitrate and di-ammonium hydrogen phosphate as calcium and phosphorus precursors, respectively. The precipitation process employed was also found to be suitable for the production of sub-micrometre β-TCP powder in situ. The sinterability of the nano-size powders, and the microstructure, mechanical strength of the prepared β-TCP bioceramics were investigated. Bioceramic sample characterization was achieved by powder X-ray diffraction (XRD), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), and density measurements. Powders compacted and sintered at 800, 900, 1000 and 1100 °C showed an increase in relative density from 70 % to 93 %. The results revealed that the maximum hardness of 240 HV was obtained for β-TCP sintered at 1100 °C.

Numerical analysis of the static bending and free vibration mechanical behavior of FGM are performed using the UMAT-USDFLD subroutines in ABAQUS software. Different combinations of geometries, mechanical loading and boundary conditions are adopted. The material properties according to the coordinates of the integration points are defined in the developed numerical model. The First Order Deformation Theory is used for thin and moderately thick FG shells analysis. The accuracy and the robustness of the numerical model are illustrated through the solution of several non trivial structure problems. The proposed numerical procedure is significantly efficient from the computational point of view.

Mg-0.5Si-xSn (x=0.95, 2.9, 5.02wt.%) alloys were cast and extruded at 593K (320 ºC) with an extrusion ratio of 25. The microstructure and mechanical properties of as-cast and extruded test alloys were investigated by OM, SEM, XRD and tensile tests. The experimental results indicate that the microstructure of the Mg-0.5Si-xSn alloys consists of primary α-Mg dendrites and an interdendritic eutectic containing α-Mg, Mg2Si and Mg2Sn. There is no coarse primary Mg2Si phase in the test alloys due to low Si content. With the increase in the Sn content, the Mg2Si phase was refined. The shape of Mg2Si phase was changed from branch to short bar, and the size of them were reduced. The ultimate tensile strength and yield strength of Mg-0.52Si-2.9Sn alloy at the temperature of 473K (200 ºC) reach 133MPa and 112MPa respectively. Refined eutectic Mg2Si phase and dispersed Mg2Sn phase with good elevated temperature stability are beneficial to improve the elevated temperature performance of the alloys. However, with the excess addition of Sn, large block-like Mg2Sn appears around the grain boundary leading to lower mechanical properties.

Opis:
Two series of polyurethane composites were prepared using NDI- and MDI-based prepolymers and common polyol. NDI-based polyurethane is generally resistant to mechanical wear and rebound-resilient whereas MDI-based PU has cushioning and vibration damping features, and both types can be used as a matrix for load-bearing composites. The objective of this study was to compare the mechanical properties of composites containing 5% vol. of ceramic particles prepared with the use of the mentioned PU systems, and unmodified commercial materials. The effect of various ceramic particles on physical and mechanical properties was studied. The results showed that the mechanical properties changed in comparison to reference materials: E’ improved, and impact strength performed favorably in certain materials. Both the tensile strengths and the elongations at break of the composites were found to decrease with the content of ceramic particles; however, the hardness increased gradually. Since ceramic particles offer better stiffness and hardness, the selected composites could be a viable alternative to the pure commercial PUs available in the industry.

Opis:
Clinching is an effective joining technique for lightweight sheet materials that are difficult or impossible to weld. A theoretical model for clinched joints in metal sheets was established and a design method for improving joint strength by selecting different clinching tools was proposed. The analytic model is defined as a function of the neck-thickness and the undercut, which are the key parameters of joint geometry. Based on the analytic model, the design method of clinched joint strength that can satisfy required strength was proposed. Clinching experiments were conducted with 2.00 mm thick aluminium alloy 5052 sheets. Various conditions were used during the clinching process to validate the joint strength model. Tensile-shear strength of clinched joints was measured by a servo-hydraulic testing machine. The calculated joint strength was in good agreement with the experimental results.

Opis:
Purpose: The aim of the proposed research is to investigate operational properties of a wheel steel treated with simultaneous solid solution and precipitation hardening at various carbon content, in comparison with the standard wheel grade T steel. Design/methodology/approach: The mechanical behaviour of wheel steels with increased content of silicon, manganese, vanadium, and nitrogen at various carbon content has been investigated and compared to that of the standard high-strength wheel grade T steel. The steels were undergo thermal treatment due to austenitic heating up to a temperature of 950.C with cooling down in water to 550.C followed by intense blowing of blanks in the air. After that, a tempering was performed at a temperature in the range of 450-650.C. Static strength (UTS), relative elongation (TEL), impact toughness tests (KCV) were determined on standard specimens. The characteristics of Mode I fatigue crack growth resistance of steel were determined on the basis of fatigue macrocrack growth rate diagrams da/dN–ΔKI, obtained by the standard method on compact specimens with the thickness of 10 mm at a frequency of 10-15 Hz and the stress ratio R = 0.1 and R = 0.5 of the loading cycle. The characteristics of Mode II fatigue crack growth resistance were determined on the basis of da/dN–ΔKII diagrams, obtained earlier method on edge notched specimens with the thickness 3.2 mm at a frequency of 10-15 Hz and R = -1 taking account of the crack face friction. Rolling contact fatigue testing was carried out on the model specimens. Findings: The regularities of the change of mechanical characteristics of the high-strength wheel steel with simultaneous solid solution and precipitation hardening at lowered carbon content under static, impact and cyclic loading are studied. Research limitations/implications: The results obtained using laboratory samples should be checked during a real railway wheels investigation. Practical implications: The investigated steel with simultaneous solid solution and precipitation hardening provides high wear resistance of the tread surface and damage resistance determined on the model wheels. Originality/value: A steel with solid solution hardening due to increased content of silicon (up to 0.7%) and manganese (up to 0.8%) and also with precipitation hardening (at optimal content of vanadium and nitrogen [V‧N]‧104 = 28.9%) at lowered carbon content (0.52) possesses high strength and fatigue fracture toughness in cases of Mode I and Mode II loading, causing better combination of wear and damage resistances of the tread surface of the model wheels, as compared to corresponding parameters for grade T steel.

Mechanical alterations of explants made of polyester were investigated using a uni-axial tensile test and a relaxation test. The tensile strength of the explanted meshes changed in the transversal direction. The elastic modulus in the same direction increased two times. A magnified mesh image displayed mesh alteration. The relaxation tests revealed that the initial stress decreases after implantation while the reduction of stress increases in the interval 50%-96.6%.

Opis:
Sand occupies a great proportion of the cementitious matrix product and in particular mortars. Hence, the study of fine aggregates used for concrete and mortar in general, deserves to be objects of research including sand which has always been considered as inert material, whose role is exclusively physical. The study of mortars performances based on prepared sand to assess the effect of the type and rate of substitution of mineral additions pozzolana and blast furnace slag of a natural sand fine fraction (sieve diameter less than 0.16 mm) is seen as the main objective of the present experimental research work. The natural sand replaced size is less than 160 µm and for rheological reasons the maximum replacement rate of natural sand is limited to 10%. The results obtained show a significant improvement of the mechanical properties for the mortars based on the new activated sand. With regard to durability tests of HCl and H2SO4 acids chemical attacks, the substitution of the quartz by active mineral additions in the sand-size skeleton allows an advantageous reduction in loss of resistance up to 50% and a mass gain around 75%.

The paper describes the analysis of a three-span soil-steel bridge along the road section crossing a dry anti-flood reservoir. The structure can be occasionally filled with water. The authors investigate internal forces and stresses in the shells due to live loads at different water conditions. Finite element simulations are carried out assuming elastic-plastic behavior of soil, elastic shell and nonlinear (frictional) contact zone. The analysis takes into account soil load history. In particular, the construction and operation of the bridge under quasi-static live loads is considered. The construction stage includes laying and compaction of the backfill. Then, the bridge in operation is investigated at three different water conditions: normal use (dry reservoir), maximum water level (flood) and lowering of the water level in the reservoir. The results show that during the flood the maximum stress in the shell significantly increases. Moreover, some of non-linear effects, typical in such structures, e.g. hysteretic effect, become more evident in comparison to normal use of the bridge.

Sands reinforced by hydraulic binders (cement) have constituted in recent decades a major asset for the expansion of several areas of engineering. The mechanical behavior of sand-cement mixtures has undergone some controversies studied on the Chlef sand. In this paper, we present an experimental study to investigate the mechanical behavior of a sandy soil reinforced by a hydraulic binder (cement), using the direct shear apparatus emphasizing on the shear strength characteristics and the vertical deformation variation of cemented reinforced sand. The parameters used in this study are mainly: relative density (Dr = 80%), normal stress (σn = 100, 200, 400 kPa), water content (3, 7 and 10%), cement content (2.5, 5, 7.5 and 10 %) and cure time (7, 14 and 28 days). The experimental results show that the mechanical characteristics in terms of internal cohesion (C) and internal frication angle (φ) give a better mechanical performance with the binder inclusion, and the cure conditions play an effective role on the improvement of the shear strength. This result also showed that 10% of the cement content gave us a maximum value of shear strength and an optimal influence on the mechanical characteristics. The addition of cement not only improves the shear strength of soil, but also provides diversity in the resistance against the deformations imposed load, which can be established by a dilatant character.

Opis:
This study aims to simulate and to analyze the elastic and the damage behavior of a reinforced metallic liner (RML) by means of a computational tool, in order to aid in the design of high specific-stiffness and -strength barrels for heavy-duty hydraulic applications. Case studies for the program validation are undertaken using an AISI 1026 or St52.3 steel tubing reinforced with a polymeric composite of glass fiber and epoxy resin, wound in a hoop pattern. The mechanical behavior of the RML under internal pressure with no-end effects is predicted by means of strain measurements at the outermost layer. The mathematical model is based on the Classical Lamination Theory (CLT) improved with kinematic relationships that allow to introduce curvature effects. Numerical results based on experimental measurements show that the reinforcement is effective, allowing to considerably augment the maximum bearable pressure with respect to a non-reinforced metallic liner (nRML), without important weight or cost increase.
