Since hydro turbines are designed individually according to the local situation, this requires a huge engineering effort. In order to reduce this effort, automatic optimisation tools are necessary. In this paper the shape optimisation of a turbine draft tube is shown. Different optimisation algorithms have been applied and will be discussed. From the used algorithms, the one based on approximated gradients seems to be the fastest.

Opis:
The main objective of this paper is to present an example of the IT system implementation with advanced mathematical optimisation for job scheduling. The proposed genetic procedure leads to the Pareto front, and the application of the multiple criteria decision aiding (MCDA) approach allows extraction of the final solution. Definition of the key performance indicator (KPI), reflecting relevant features of the solutions, and the efficiency of the genetic procedure provide the Pareto front comprising the representative set of feasible solutions. The application of chosen MCDA, namely elimination et choix traduisant la réalité (ELECTRE) method, allows for the elicitation of the decision maker (DM) preferences and subsequently leads to the final solution. This solution fulfils all of the DM expectations and constitutes the best trade-off between considered KPIs. The proposed method is an efficient combination of genetic optimisation and the MCDA method.

Opis:
Purpose: The aim of the work is to build physically sound engineering and design schemes that take into account the behaviour of polycrystalline metal systems under intense loads and allow optimization of surface treatment technologies to increase the operational reliability parameters of products. Design/methodology/approach: Using the approaches of thermodynamics, a methodological scheme is proposed, on the basis of which it is possible to optimize surface engineering technologies to increase the contact durability of details. Findings: It was found that the maximum increase in the durability of steel 40X13 (AISI 420) is achieved with thermocyclic ion nitriding in a cycle of ± 50°C, and the minimum with isothermal nitriding. Research limitations/implications: In this paper, the optimization of technological solutions to increase the contact durability of structural elements operating under prevailing power loads is given. Practical implications: Using the proposed mathematical relationships, optimal technological regimes of ion-plasma nitriding were established for various operating conditions, under which the maximum durability and wear resistance of 40X13 (AISI 420) steel are ensured. Originality/value: The paper proposes an approach to the formation of functionally gradient surface layers of steel with specified operational parameters when choosing optimal nitriding technology modes based on nonlocal mathematical models.

The paper presents results of research focused on modelling heat storage tank operation used for forecasting purposes. It presents selected issues related to mathematical modelling of heat storage tanks and related equipment and discusses solution process of the optimisation task. Presented detailed results were obtained during real-life industrial implementation of the optimisation process at the Siekierki combined heat and power (CHP) plant in Warsaw owned by Vattenfall Heat Poland S.A. (currently by Polish Oil & Gas Company - PGNiG SA) carried out by the Academic Research Centre of Power Industry and Environment Protection, Warsaw University of Technology in collaboration with Transition Technologies S.A. company.

This research article formulates a mathematical model of the matrix game of the safe ship control process containing: state variables and control, collision risk definition and the form of a collision risk matrix. Multicriteria optimization of the matrix game was introduced, leading to non-cooperative and cooperative game control algorithms and non-game control. Simulation safe trajectories of own ship for various types of control were compared to the example of the real situation at sea.

The paper presents analysis of optimisation results of power system stabilizer (PSS) parameters when taking into account the uncertainty of mathematical model parameters of the power system (PS) elements. The Pareto optimisation was used for optimisation of the system stabilizer parameters. Parameters of five stabilizers of PSS3B type were determined in optimisation process with use of a genetic algorithm with tournament selection. The results obtained were assessed from the point of view of selecting the criterion function. The analysis of influence of the parameter uncertainty on the quality of the results obtained was performed.

Opis:
Restricted water effects upon ship manoeuvring are investigated from the full-scale based identification viewpoint. As the resistance increase may be quite accurately correlated with the squat, it is proposed to store in the ship manoeuvring model kernel only data on the ship's squat. The problem of correction factors (multipliers) to be imposed upon ship added masses and hull force coefficients is raised. Different patterns (combinations) of the multipliers are simulated to show the most representative ship behaviour with regard to turning and zigzag manoeuvres.
Przeanalizowano wpływ ograniczeń hydraulicznych akwenu na manewrowanie statkiem w aspekcie identyfikacji hydrodynamicznego modelu ruchu z prób morskich. W odniesieniu do modelowania wzrostu oporów zaleca się ich uzależnienie od aktualnego osiadania. Przeprowadzono symulację różnych konfiguracji współczynników korekcyjnych hydrodynamiki kadłuba na warunki płytkowodzia celem otrzymania charakterystycznych zachowań statku w próbach cyrkulacji i wężowej.

Opis:
The paper presents formulations of optimisation problems for minimisation of servicing cost of government debt instruments (T-bills and T-bonds) issued in Poland and examples of their applications. The first of these problems allows for determining the structure of T-bills with different maturities - from 1 to 52 weeks (sold at multiprice auction), which minimise their servicing cost. This cost (criterion function) is based on T-bills profitability determined by compound rate of return (CRR). The constraints of the task express: * minimum receipts to the State Budget, * maximal profitability, * average maturity, and * minimal and maximal amount for each type of bills. The generalisation of this problem for some series of (consecutive) auctions is also discussed. The second task makes it possible to determine optimal structure of T-bonds using a similar (but more complex) form of the criterion function and more extensive set of constraints. The problems presented are of discrete and non-linear form and in result - rather difficult to solve in real time (during the auction). Therefore, some continuos approximations of these problems based on polynomials determined with the use of least squares method are suggested. Such an approach makes it possible to obtain an optimal solution in several minutes using Excel spreadsheet (package solver) and PC computer. Examples of actual problems for T-bills and T-bonds, based on data for the year 2000 are presented, too. The application of optimisation methods resulted in (relative) gain measured by a criterion function equal to about 1% (annual costs of the domestic debt equals about [3 * 10^9] US$).
