Aim. The aim of the paper is to reflect on role of urban wastelands in context of legal and social construction of urban public spaces. This reflexion is based on analysis of what ecological values are connected with urban wastelands and how those values manifested during pandemic. Methods. Paper is based on observatory research put in the context of theoretical reflection on urban research, especially applying to ecology and urban management. Results.  Spontaneous social animation of urban wastelands related to restrictions placed upon using green areas by Polish government in order to stop the spread of COVID-19 in April 2020 revealed potential of such places to trace regulations introduced in public spaces resulting in transfer of some social practices to less ordered and supervised areas. Conclusions. Nowadays urban wastelands gained appreciation as areas of specific high biodiversity and ecological value. However they can also be useful as a measure of social practices excluded from planned and highly organised urban places. They can be used to trace them and rethink legal and social circumstances that led to that exclusion.

This paper is based on qualitative research among people diagnosed with a mental illness who voluntarily attend a mental health center. Such individuals are given a degrading “mentally ill” label, which transforms them into a “new” person. This study showed that—due to their label—research participants are often socially marginalized—not only in the public but also in the private sphere. As members of an “organized deviant group” (the mental health center), they follow a “deviant career” and find a job outside the regular job market. Their marginalization is not only caused by their health problems (by their impairment), but they are also disabled through social reactions to these problems. Psychiatry based on the biological model of the disease cannot, therefore, help them without the cooperation of social science approaches dealing with social marginalization.

Opis:
The article presents the post-war history of Evangelical population: Germans and Masurians in Ełk county.  For this purpose, archival sources and biographical interviews were used. Interviews with the inhabitants of the county were collected as part of two oral history projects carried out by the "Museum for Ełk" Association in 2013-2015.The historical context is complemented by the available literature. One third of post-war Poland consisted of the territories being the part the Third Reich before the World War II, where a considerable part of population were Germans. Masurians formed a borderland group that became the reason of conflict between the Polish and the German. In the first half of the 20th century, both as a result of the nationalistic discourse and the assimilation pressure, most of them declared to maintain German identity. After the war, Masurians were present  in the public space of Ełk county as a minority group. There was the inflow of  population of the eastern territories of the Second Republic of Poland and people from central Poland. The small Evangelical church in Ełk in Słowackiego street was often filled with the faithful.  Numerous processes and phenomena of  social marginalization, exclusion and displacements resulted in nearly entire disintegration of Masurian and Evangelical community.  The number of the faithful in Evangelical community proves it- there are nearly 150 people and only few of them feel Masurian origin. In the post-war vision of future Poland nationally and religiously homogenous state was believed to be an ideal solution.

Marginalization of “the Other”: Gender Discrimination in Dystopian Visions by Feminist Science Fiction Authors

Opis:
In patriarchy women are frequently perceived as “the other” and as such they are subject to discrimination and marginalization. The androcentric character of patriarchy inherently confines women to the fringes of society. Undeniably, this was the case in Western culture throughout most of the twentieth century, before the social transformation triggered by the feminist movement enabled women to access spheres previously unavailable to them. Feminist science fiction of the 1970s, like feminism, attempted to challenge the patriarchal status quo in which gender-based discrimination against women was the norm. Thus, authors expressed, in a fictionalized form, the same issues that constituted the primary concerns of feminism in its second wave. As feminist science fiction is an imaginative genre, the critique of the abuses of the twentieth-century patriarchy is usually developed in defamiliarized, unreal settings. Consequently, current problems are recontextualized, a technique which is meant to give the reader a new perspective on certain aspects of life they might otherwise take for granted, such as the inadequacies of patriarchy and women’s marginality in society. Yet there are authors who consider the real world dystopian enough to be used as a setting for their novels. This is the case with Woman on theEdge of Time by Marge Piercy and The Female Man by Joanna Russ. Both texts split the narrative into a science fictional and a realistic strand so as to contrast the contemporary world with utopian and dystopian alternatives. Both texts are largely politicized as they expose and challenge the marginalized status of women in the American society of the 1970s. They explore the process of constructing marginalized identities, as well as the forms that marginalization takes in the society. Most importantly, they indicate the necessity of decisive steps being taken to improve the situation.

In our paper a very simple model is used to analyze the relationship between trade globalization, inequality and economic policy. Although the local government exclusively maximizes the welfare of the marginalized (unemployed) people, the inequality of relative consumption between employed and unemployed will increase with intensified trade liberalization. In contrast to this result the relative income inequality may fall in certain situations.

Poverty, if it is not properly viewed by the public, may lead to the depersonalization of both poor and living in the midst of those who need help. Poverty is experienced by children in a specific way. They often suffer from hunger, they are undernourished, and they have limited access to a variety of goods, including culture and education. This, in turn, is often reflected in their self-esteem, a sense of self-dignity. The role of the school in fighting the poverty of the students is shown in this article. The existing forms of aid to poor students are presented, as well as the challenges facing the school in terms of helping marginalized students. It is also crucial for the teachers themselves to be trained in such a way that would promote not only the intellectual development of the students, but most of all – the pro-social attitudes and that would emphasize the value and dignity of a person.

The article presents the attitudes of the Roma minority towards the postcommunist transformation in Poland in the broader context of Romani ethnic/political mobilization and transformations of Romani identities. The text outlines main differences between the present situation of the Roma in Poland and the way they were treated in the communist period. Differentiated attitudes of the Roma towards postcommunist transformation have been presented and interpreted in the context of the growing sense of insecurity, growing possibilities of self-organization, and difficulties with securing social integration. The texts presents also various forms of discrimination and marginalization the Roma face, with particular emphasis on decentralized physical violence and centralized semantic violence, which influence Romani strategies of survival and identity-building.

I focus on the discursive strategies within Two Spirit events and groups that center the definition of ‘Two Spirit’ first and foremost as an Indigenous identity by using both unifying/mass terms (Native American, glbtiq) and culturally & community specific terms (specific tribe names, Two Spirit). Rather than selecting a “right” term, such conversations highlight the constant, simultaneous positionings negotiated by Two Spirit people in their daily lives, and the tensions between recognizability and accuracy; communality and specificity; indigeneity and settler culture; and the burden multiply marginalized people carry in negotiating between all of those metaphorical and literal spaces. Drawing on Simpson’s (2014) concept of the politics of refusal, I demonstrate how Two Spirit individuals utilize available categories of identity, not as either/or binaries but rather as overlapping concepts- differentiated along micro- and macro- scales- to refuse attempts to both reduce the Two Spirit identity to one that is based either in gender or sexuality, and the appropriation of the identity and movement by non-Indigenous individuals and groups within broader national and global queer movements.

The article presents the results of the research on marginalization of the homeless in the Lublin Province. 500 individual questionnaire interviews were conducted with the homeless in four cities in the region. Specially de-veloped for this type of research indicators were used. The research findings show that more than half of the homeless experience very high levels of social exclusion (maximum, on the scale). The article also attempts to link the exclusion level with social and demographic characteristics of the homeless (gender, age, education) and variables, such as causes and length of homelessness, family-of-origin and willingness to get out of homeless-ness. The research conducted contributes to the discussion on the social dimension of sustainable development and its barriers, such as marginalization.
W artykule przedstawiono wyniki badań dotyczących marginalizacji osób bezdomnych na terenie województwa lubelskiego. Przeprowadzono 500 indywidualnych wywiadów kwestionariuszowych z bezdomnymi w czterech miastach regionu.

The author studies the reception of the theory of recognition, represented by Axel Honneth and Nancy Fraser, in Polish sociology. Even if this reception is at present not very wide, one can still identify at least three problem areas in which Polish sociologists work on similar issues and with similar approaches as those present in the theory of recognition. These areas are: studies on identity and agency, gender studies, and research on various dimensions of marginalization. The author argues that the theoretical perspective of the ‘struggles for recognition’ would be an interesting inspiration for the research of Polish sociologists and shows some indicators of the growing interest in that perspective in recent years

Real-life data sets sometimes miss some values. The incomplete data needs specialized algorithms or preprocessing that allows the use of the algorithms for complete data. The paper presents a comparison of various techniques for handling incomplete data in the neuro-fuzzy system ANNBFIS. The crucial procedure in the creation of a fuzzy model for the neuro-fuzzy system is the partition of the input domain. The most popular approach (also used in the ANNBFIS) is clustering. The analyzed approaches for clustering incomplete data are: preprocessing (marginalization and imputation) and specialized clustering algorithms (PDS, IFCM, OCS, NPS). The objective of our research is the comparison of the preprocessing techniques and specialized clustering algorithms to find the the most-advantageous technique for handling incomplete data with a neuro-fuzzy system. This approach is also the indirect validation of clustering.

More and more frequently a notion of space ghettoization is used to describe a phenomenon of dividing urban space into various enclaves of social life-or socially isolated worlds. Ghettoization that we describe results from various social processes which are increasingly reflected in urban space. It results from differences in the economic standard of inhabitants of given areas (riches–poverty) There is one more criterion, very important if we view the case from a profoundly humanistic perspective-the criterion of social emotions accompanying urban space. This justifies the title of this article. Today’s ghettoes may result from relatively automatic choices (lifestyles) and relatively objective processes-marginalization. We will try to make a general outline of the problems of ghettoization in a traditional industrial region, namely in Upper Silesia, related to diversification of income as well as the aesthetic and architectonic and urban criteria.

Opis:
Cormac McCarthy, one of the greatest contemporary novelists in America, glorifies the male world, giving women minor importance. In one interview, after being asked about the absence of women in his works, he replied “women are tough (...). I don’t think men understand women. They find them very mysterious”. The word “mysterious” may have a negative connotation and would refer to something dangerous, scary, suspicious. After studying McCarthy’s works, it is hard not to associate the writer with an unfavourable, indeed, misogynistic tendency to mystify women and female sexuality. Not only does he characterize women as degraded characters, often relegated to insignificant duties, but presents them as symbols of trouble, misfortune, death. The novelist praises the male bond, whereas the female-male relationship perishes. This essay contextualizes his male dominance over female characters, points out the diminished role of women, as well as outlining several recurring patterns of portraying them as bad mothers, subservient characters, whores, and their association with danger and death.
