In April 2014, Nihon Hoso Kyokai (NHK: Japan Broadcasting Company) aired a short animated film titled “Ophelia, not yet”. Ophelia, in this animation, survives, as she is a backstroke champion. This article will attempt to contextualize the complex negotiations, struggles and challenges between high culture and pop culture, between Western culture and Japanese culture, between authoritative cultural products and radicalized counterculture consumer products (such as animation), to argue that it would be more profitable to think of the relationships between highbrow/lowbrow, Western/non-Western, male versus female, heterosexual versus non-heterosexual, not simply in terms of dichotomies or domination/subordination, but in terms of reciprocal enrichment in a never-ending process of mutual metamorphoses.

Opis:
Sailor Moon, a Japanese series grounded in manga and anime, began airing translations in the West throughout the 1990s. The series provided what could be interpreted as resistance to dichotomous conceptualizations of sexuality, sex and gender. The focus of this article is the set of challenges presented by the genderqueer characters in Sailor Moon and how Westernization and English translations have worked to erase and re-write queer identities. Arguably, Sailor Moon acts as a site to play out the contextualities and complexities of sexuality, sex and gender identities. To name Sailor Moon characters in Western specific terms would be at the expense of reducing the complexity of their identities to a categorical system whose boundaries detract and limit meaning. Queer characters in Sailor Moon are not translatable into dichotomous Western thought - categories fail us and, through their enforcement, the depth of meaning and the complexities of queer identities/desires are lost in translation. Working within Western binary systems, categories and language, many of these identities appear contradictory and incoherent. Sailor Moon characters offer a re-envisioning of identities that is not limited by Western binaric thought and cannot be easily pegged within the heterosexual matrix.

Opis:
The present report illustrates an improved and reproducible micropropagation system for economically valuable bamboo species Pseudoxytenanthera stocksii using nodal segments. Direct organogenesis from nodal segments was accomplished by culturing on Murashige and Skoog (MS) medium supplemented with 6.0 mg/L 6-benzylaminopurine (BAP). On this medium combination 9.0±0.25 shoots per explant were induced. Shoot multiplication was subjective to the combination of auxins and cytokinins concentrations used and number of repeated transfer of mother explants or subculturing of in vitro regenerated shoot clumps on fresh medium. Maximum 41.9±1.00 shoots were observed on MS medium supplemented with 4.0 mg/L of BAP and 0.25 mg/L of naphthalene acetic acid (NAA). Half strength MS medium containing various concentrations of auxins was used for in vitro root formation. Successful rooting with maximum response was achieved on half strength MS medium + 50% sucrose and 1.0 mg/L IBA (24.3±0.27 roots). The rooted plantlets were planted the soilrite and hardened in the greenhouse for 6-8 weeks. Completely acclimatized plantlets exhibited 96% survivability. The present propagation protocol could satisfy the demand of P. stocksii and could be explored for the commercial propagation of this valuable manga bamboo.

Opis:
The aim of this article is to indicate the kinds of animals and their symbolic function in the works of the Japanese artist Takano Aya (b. 1976, Saitama). Her works may be interpreted as illustrative of the current attitude towards animals prevailing in contemporary Japanese society, especially its part that is deeply permeated by local pop culture. After all, her art fits into the Superflat movement and the girly aesthetics of kawaii at the same time. Takano’s paintings are full of images of cute household pets: dogs, fish, cats and rabbits, which accompany the female characters in both everyday activities and extraordinary moments (Doggy Drive, 2005; Summoning Her Owls, She Looked Yonder. The Buildings Shone, 2007; Crane Island, 2009). In her paintings there are also mythological animals, which were so commonly represented in the ancient artwork of Japan. Takano depicts cranes, tigers and dragons (Rising Dragon (Rainbow) with Lucky Omens, 2015) in the same style as household pets.
タカノ綾の芸術作品における龍とその他の動物」本論の目的は、日本のアーティストであるタカノ綾(1976年埼玉生まれ)の作品における、ある種の動物達と彼らの象徴的な役割を指摘することである。彼女の作品は、日本現代社会の中でも特にポップカルチャーに深く浸透している動物に対する姿勢を映し出していると解釈できる。そして彼女の芸術作品は、「カワイイ」少女的美学と同時にスーパーフラット・ムーブメントに合致する。タカノの絵画には、犬、魚、猫、そして兎など多くの可愛いペットのイメージが、女性のキャラクターと共に、日常的な活動や非日常的な瞬間の中に描かれる(Doggy Drive, 2005; The Buildings Shone, 2007; Crane Island, 2009)。彼女の絵画の中には、日本の古くから伝わる芸術に頻繁に見られる神話的な動物もまた現れる。鶴、虎、龍(Rising Dragon (Rainbow) with Lucky Omens, 2015)といった動物達はタカノによって、ペットと同様のスタイルで表現されているのである。
