Opis:
In this study, eggshell powder obtained from eggshell waste was used as a dopant in soda-lime-silica glass powders. Various eggshell-doped soda-lime-silica glass samples were produced through melting, and the effect of the eggshell powders on the mechanical properties of the soda-lime-silica glasses was investigated by micro-Vickers indentation tests. The X-ray diffraction results of the eggshell-doped glasses showed that, depending on the dopant content, different phases such as gypsum, nepheline, alunogene, aragonite, cristobalite etc. appeared. These results were different from the X-ray diffraction patterns of pure soda-lime-silica glass powders, where the phases observed included sodium aluminium silicate, sodium aluminum oxide, and silicon oxide. Although the elastic modulus of soda-lime-silica glasses increased with the addition of the eggshell powders, the dopant powders also caused an increase in the hardness of the glasses. Furthermore, it was found that the fracture toughness increased for soda-lime-silica glasses with 0.5 and 1 wt% eggshell powder, while it decreased for samples with eggshell powder contents ≥1 wt%. This behaviour could be explained by an increased depolymerization in the network connectivity of the glass when the amount of eggshell dopant increases.

Opis:
The paper presents a method for improving the lime production process by increasing the efficiency of the lime slurry transport that occurs in it. The aim of the study was to reduce the energy demand of the pump installed in the discharge line. The presented solution consists of applying an additive called deflocculant to the transported slurry in order to reduce its viscosity while increasing the concentration of solids content. The deflocculant applied to the slurry is composed of waste material from the lime slaking process and an environmentally neutral chemical substance in the form of sodium-water glass. The rheological studies conducted confirm the positive effect of the selected deflocculant on the properties of the slurry tested. As a result of the analysis, it has been shown that the proposed solution has a substantial effect on reducing the friction factor of the transported slurry, thus reducing the energy consumption in the investigated process.

Opis:
The results of two field experiments carried out on acid (pHKCl 4.2 - 4.3) sandy loam Dystric Podzoluvisol showed that the crops sensitive to soil acidity (winter wheat, fodder beets, spring barley and mixture of clover-timothy) were more productive on limed and fertilized soil. Crops less sensitive to acidity (winter ryes, potatoes, oats and mixture of lupine-oats) have the advantage on the acid and nonfertilized soil. The all-nutrient fertilizer application (NPK) increased the yield of crops sensitive to soil acidity on limed soil by 23.1 % and that of crops less sensitive to acidity by 18.0% in comparison to the yield of crops grown in acid soil. Therefore we can grow the crops less sensitive to acidity on the acid soil using optimum rates of cattle manure. The application of recommended rates of mineral fertilizers by growing crops sensitive to acidity on limed soil is more useful. The reaction of soil solution on liming soil must be higher than 5.5 pHKCl.

Opis:
The optical properties of soda-lime-silica glasses doped with eggshell powder were investigated using UV-visible and the Fourier transform infrared spectroscopies. Pure soda-lime-silica glass, which is colorless and transparent, turned dark green after the addition of the eggshell powder. When the eggshell powder content was ≥ 3 wt%, the glass became translucent. The maximum wavelengths in the UV spectra of the soda-lime-silica glasses doped with 0.5, 1, 3, and 5 wt% eggshell powder were observed at 300.20, 277.40, 284.40, and 312.40 nm, respectively. The Fourier transform infrared spectra of the eggshell-doped soda-lime-silica glass samples were very similar to that of the base undoped glass. The bands at approximately 770-820 cm¯¹ could be attributed to the Si-O-Si symmetric stretching of the bridging oxygen between the tetrahedra, while the bands at approximately 970 cm¯¹ were related to the Si-O-Si antisymmetric stretching of the bridging oxygen within the tetrahedra.

This publication presents the test results of heavy metals and metalloids leachability from ground composite materials. The components of the obtained composites are peat and stabilizing binders in the form of fly ash and hydrated lime. The composites were designed to be used to stabilize low-bearing organic soil in the Lake Druzno basin in the area of Żuławy Elbląskie. The results of the leachability studies show that as the lime hydrated in the composition of the composite increases, the leachability of heavy metals and metalloids decreases. The decrease in the leachability of these elements is also influenced by the increase in the pH value. The results of heavy metals and metalloids leachability from composites as well as the obtained pH values make it possible to conclude that they are neutral to the ground environment and can be used in engineering practice under specific conditions in the area of Żuławy Elbląskie.

Moisture damage is one of the most critical distresses affecting asphalt pavement. The use of mineral fillers such as hydrated lime can increase the moisture resistance of the asphalt mixtures. In this study, the effects of hydrated lime (HL) and nano hydrated lime (NHL) were investigated on the moisture susceptibility of modified asphalt mixtures. The asphalt mixtures were modified using HL and NHL with varying percentages of each additive. The indirect tensile strength (ITS) test was performed to investigate moisture susceptibility. This test was carried out with three types of asphalt mixtures including, normal asphalt mixture without additives, modified asphalt mixture with HL, and modified with NHL. The results showed that the addition of HL and NHL as mineral fillers enhanced the performance of the mixtures against moisture damage. The highest increase in ITS value under dry conditions was observed in the modified mixtures with 20% HL and 20% NHL, and under wet conditions it was observed at 30% HL and 20% NHL. The results also indicated that the addition of 20% HL and 30% NHL increased the value of tensile strength ratio (TSR) by 78.6% and 70.6%, respectively.

Proper design of the building component, which not only meets the legal requirements, but also provides comfort of using of buildings, requires knowledge of the materials and solutions. Since moisture is one of the main factors that can affect the building structure destruction, it is particularly important to be aware of hygrothermal properties of components. And this is the focus of the study. In this paper several variants of external walls were analysed, according to the requirements in terms of: heat transfer coefficient U, the risk of surface and interstitial condensation. Partitions were designed with composite based on shives from industrial hemp and lime binder, which is not yet widely used in Poland. The purpose of the analysis of this material was to prove the validity of using the natural materials in residential buildings.

Citrus genus includes a wide number of species that have been long cultivated and well adapted in Tunisia. It is represented by small number of plantations and considered as underutilized in Tunisia. Our goal was to genetically characterize Tunisian lime genotypes to obtain data useful for gene conservation and breeding purposes. The survey of genotypes was conducted in the Cap Bon region, where citrus cultivation is the most spread. Sixteen quantitative and 19 qualitative parameters were evaluated. The observed accessions belonged to three different species: Citrus limetta, Citrus latifolia (limes Byrsa), and Citrus limettioides (limes of Palestine) according to Tanaka classification. Principal component analysis confirmed these classifications. Four-cell analysis (FCA) was used to determine the most threatened genotypes. Quantitative traits were evaluated and allowed the discrimination between genotypes. Many quantitative traits of fruit and juice were highly positively and significantly correlated. Phenotypic diversity was determined using Shannon–Wiener diversity index (H’). The highest value of diversity index was observed for both vesicle thickness and thickness of segment walls (H’ = 0.98). Intermediate values were observed for both fruit axis (H’= 0.49) and pulp firmness (H’ = 0.43). However, fruit shape (H’ = 0.24), shape of fruit apex (H’ = 0.24), and vesicle length (H’ = 0.33) presented the lowest values of diversity index. Current findings will be useful to conserve threatened genotypes ex situ and on farm and also will guide strategic conservation on Citrus genetic resources for future breeding programs.

Samples of excess sludge from wastewater treatment plants were investigated in order to determine the dependence of rheological parameters of sewage sludge on lime addition. Hydration of the sludge is one of its main features which determine sludge management and waste disposal cost. The rheological behavior of sludge is a key characteristic, since it determines the treatment processes. This research has evaluated the use of rheological properties for characterization and control of sludge and lime mixture flow behaviour. A laboratory investigation was conducted using rotating coaxial cylinder and several different gravimetric oncentrations of the investigated sludge. In order to describe the rheological characteristics, the 3-parameter Herschel-Bulkley model was applied. Rheological characterization is of great importance in sludge management, both in terms of biomass dewatering and stabilizing properties, and in terms of design parameters for sludge handling operations.

Opis:
Prior to the beginning of this century, lime dominance as a building material particularly, lime mortar was incontrovertible. Reminiscence of this is reflected in many buildings of historic references which stand till date as their durability features are predominantly attributed to lime’s inherent properties of flexibility, plasticity and breathability, among others. However, lime’s characteristic long ‘setting and hardening’ periods, low mechanical strength and poor internal cohesion coupled with subsequent discovery of Portland cement put its use into decline. In this paper, new approaches involving lime based composites aimed at maximising lime’s sterling features while improving its identified shortcomings are highlighted. The focus is particularly on lime based mortars blended with cement and ‘Ground Granulated Blast Furnace Slag’ (slag) in varying compositions individually, for improved performances. As this effort attempts to evolve lime revival for new constructions, it will also serve as a befitting response to the phenomena climate change with a view to minimising construction impacts on the environment.

Studies on the suitability of oxidizing agents for discolouring lime and poplar wood in the first stage of transparent wood forming process. Series of lime and poplar wood samples were prepared and subjected to oxidising agent in order to decolourise wood in bulk. Sodium chlorite solution in the environment of diluted acetic acid and alkaline hydrogen peroxide solution were used as different treating agents, followed by intense rinsing in water and drying the samples. The effect of wood delignification conditions such as time of treatment and reagent used was investigated. Changes in mass and dimensions of the samples were measured, and thus density changes were calculated. Colour changes were measured with colorimeter in CIE Lab colour space. In the case of lime wood swelling of the samples was observed at the first stage, along with mass loss, leading to density decrease by 10 % after 20 h exposure. In the case of poplar wood, shrinking of the samples was observed, but due to severe mass loss, final density was similar to lime wood. Colour changes correlated mainly with lightness parameter of the samples. Significant colour differences were found even at the shortest time of treatment.
Badanie przydatności środków utleniających do odbarwiania drewna lipowego i topolowego w pierwszym etapie wytwarzania przezroczystego drewna. Przygotowano serie próbek drewna lipowego i topolowego i poddano je obróbce utleniającej w celu odbarwienia drewna w całej objętości. Mierzono zmiany masy i wymiarów próbek, i obliczono zmiany gęstości.

Fine grained waste zeolite in the form of a zeolite dust or a finely ground zeolite can be used as an active pozzolanic admixture to lime mortars. Lime mortars containing various content of fine grained zeolite were prepared and tested. Development of compressive strength, shrinkage and weight loss of lime mortars stored in different conditions was then evaluated. X ray powder diffraction of lime-zeolite pastes was also used to evaluate lime-pozzolan reaction. The results confirmed that fine grained zeolite can be usefully used as pozzolanic addition to lime mortars. Positive effect of pozzolan on the compressive strength of mortars is effective when mortars are stored in humid atmosphere where favorable conditions for lime-pozzolan reaction are. However, compressive strength of mortars stored in open air at RH 65% cannot fully develop and after some time it even decreases.

Recent works aimed to investigate geotechnical properties of Transitional Group A-2-7 (TGA-2-7) soil affected by the use of hydrated lime and fly ash class F, by-products from quarries and a cement factory in Jordan, to compensate for the gap in the granular distribution. Host soil was exposed to various proportions of fly ash and lime powder. The blended specimens were subjected to different tests related to index properties, including Atterberg limits, compaction properties and California bearing ratio. The results demonstrate that 2% fly ash led to a reduction in the plasticity index from 19% to 10%, while lime powder reduced it from 19% to 13%. A sufficient improvement of maximum dry density was observed at 20% lime addition and increased from 15.11 kN/m3 to 16.29 kN/m3. California bearing ratio that measures the strength soil linearly increased up to 10% induced by 20% lime addition.

Citrus bacterial canker, caused by Xanthomonas citri subsp. citri (Xcc), is a destructive disease. So far, the chemicals used to control this pathogen are either ineffective or harmful to the environment. To improve control of this disease, lime (Citrus aurantifolia) were treated with L-arginine, L-methionine, L-ornithine, and distilled water. Plants were inoculated with Xcc, 48 hours post treatment. Lesion diameters of inoculated leaves were evaluated four weeks after inoculation with a bacterial suspension. Changes in β-1,3-glucanase transcript levels and activity of antioxidant enzymes, catalase, peroxidase, and phenylalanine ammonia-lyase were investigated at 48 hours post treatment and 24, 48, and 72 hours post inoculation. Based on the results of phenotypic, antioxidant enzyme activity and a molecular study of the stressed plants, it was found that those plants treated with the amino acid methionine significantly increased the plant induced resistance as well as decreased the severity of disease by reducing necrotic lesion size.
