The author of this research offer the hypothesis that university education is the most important condition for the development of an innovation-oriented economy and that the creation of an innovation society requires the modernization of university education. Innovation education has been identified as a key contributor to the enhancement of the innovative behavior of individuals, organizations and economies. It is widely believed that countries’ social and economic well-being will depend to an ever greater extent on the quality of their citizens’ education: the emergence of the so-called ‘knowledge society’, the transformation of information and the media, and increasing specialization on the part of organizations, all of which call for high skill profiles and levels of knowledge. This study builds to examines an individual’s understanding of the term innovation. By looking at undergraduate and postgraduate students in Poland represented by the Warsaw School of Economics it is hoped to ascertain what role education plays in developing the notion of “innovation” and innovation education with the purpose of assessing it

Every innovation has social dimension, because it engages social players and its users (societies) at time of forming. Innovations are inscribed into social change. “We cannot think separately about innovations (items, artefacts) and people. They are coupled with each other, and innovation does not have any objective power for changing common activities and effects, unless it is told in an attracting manner, it is explained, introduced into use” (Giza – Poleszczuk 2013, p. 70). Without philosophical and humanistic study on learning the directions of development for contemporary society, we would not be capable for proper assessment or even description of social and cultural changes in larger extent, in which innovation is only small fragment, but simultaneously a significant one. (cf. Beck 2002; Castells 2008; Florida 2010; Giddens 2001) (after Bukowski A., Rudnicki S., Strycharz J., 2012, p. 19). The papers cover the areas, such as social change, new innovation features and society’s openness to innovation.

Opis:
This article sums up the results of research oriented to analyze dynamics and outputs related to the development of two different technological parks in the North-East of Italy: the Area Science Park of Trieste and the Vega of Venezia. The research has tried to find an answer to the following question: what is the regulation model more efficient to implement good innovation policies? The article argues that, to achieve an efficient innovation governance, it is needed a strong regulation by the innovation broker - the central hub of the innovation network, able to support interactions among innovation-makers and innovation-takers. To test this hypothesis, the empirical research has used both qualitative and quantitative methodologies. In the Area Science Park, good innovation performance appears strictly connected to strong regulation of the technological transfer process. In the Vega, differently, low innovation performances are combined with weak innovation regulation. The paper concludes that institutional settings at the local level can be powered by a model of governance innovation able to combine autonomous interactions among main actors involved in technological innovation with a strong regulation of the process by the innovation broker.

Purpose – The purpose of the article is to analyse the conditions of enterprises and their capacity to absorb innovation, and more specifically the impact of the current level of innovation of entities operating in the Polish economy. Research method – The research was based on the analysis of individual innovation indicators of the Polish economy, with particular emphasis on the factors related to R&D (GUS data, European Innovation Scoreboard, Global Innovation Index, The Global Competitiveness Report). Results – Analyses indicate that the main barriers to the development and implementation of innovative solutions by enterprises result primarily from their internal conditions, as the ability to absorb innovations is related to the knowledge and skills already possessed by the enterprise. In the case of Polish enterprises, their level of innovation is still insufficient to be able to fully adapt new solutions from external sources. Originality /value / implications /recommendations – The value of the article is its approach according to which the innovativeness of entities is not only the result of innovation diffusion, but the capacity to absorb innovation is related to the pre-existing level of innovation.

Production development has for decades concentrated on incremental improvements by exploiting existing manufacturing knowledge to improve existing production systems or adapt them for new product developments. Building up an "ambidextrous innovation" ability, and more specifically in increasing focus on explorative production innovation, is important to balance production development efforts and obtain sustainable development of production. This paper aims to provide a conceptual framework for “ambidextrous production innovation” that conceptualizes and highlights phenomenon characteristics from exploitative and explorative perspectives. The conceptual framework describes “production innovation” as the process of either increasing or developing a new production capability, enabling opportunities for new product designs. This process can be either “product-driven” or “production-driven” depending on the primary objective of the development.

Opis:
Background: As the terms innovation, innovation strategy and especially cooperative innovation strategy are owned and discussed by many business disciplines, they can have various definitions. But a defined innovation strategy is the first step to enable a generation of innovation in a constant way. There are different approaches how a strategy can be defined. One common approach of an innovation strategy which includes the idea of an exploratory and cooperative strategy is the Open Innovation method. It describes three possible cooperation archetypes of an organization and its environment. Caused by the increased importance of startups and their innovation approaches a transfer of the common Open Innovation approach to a cooperation between established organization and startups is the aim of this article and results in the description of the startup orientated cooperative innovation (SOCI) strategy. Methods: This article gives at first an introduction in the topic of innovation and innovation strategy and its different approaches. The Open Innovation approach is described and in a further step the transfer to the new framework of (SOCI) strategies is presented. Result: As a result, the paper presents a new framework for three archetypes of SOCI-strategies. Three archetypes of SOCI-strategies were identified, by relating the three archetypes of Open Innovation to cooperations between established companies and startups. The three SOCI-strategies are: Buy/rent a startup, spin-off and startup in coupled process. Conclusion: The SOCI framework can be seen as a helpful to categorized cooperations between established companies and startups in context of generation innovation and gives an overview which archetypes of startup cooperations are possible.

The aim of this paper is to contribute to the academic discussion on the proper understanding of the notions of responsibility and innovation. In recent years, the field of Responsible Research and Innovation has grown rapidly among academia and received considerable attention. One area of focus concerns the proper understanding of the notion of the terms themselves. They are especially problematic in light of the critique that the subject has already received (cf. Blok, Lemmens 2015). This article provides an answer to that critique and proposes an alternative approach to the notions discussed. On the one hand, it outlines the so called ambivalued notion of innovation (cf. Kawalec 2015) and on the other, it presents a four-point characteristic of responsibility relevant to the field of research and innovation. In the text, the term responsibility should be understood as collective, future-oriented, socio-political, and values-oriented.

Purpose: The general purpose of this paper is to present living labs as a new form of innovation activity based on the concept of user-driven innovation. More specifi c goals are to show the development of living labs around the world and to identify the possibilities for the development of this new form of innovation in Poland. Methodology: Because of the lack of offi cial statistics regarding the effects of living labs, this paper presents the quality aspects of the problem. Findings: In Poland, living labs are in their fi rst stage of life. The possibilities of using new forms of innovation activities are determined by partnerships between fi rms, research institutions, authorities and local communities. The main obstacle for the development of living labs is the lack of an institutional and legal framework with respect to the concept of user-driven innovation. Research limitations: Because of their short period of life, it is not possible to estimate the effects resulting from the activity of living labs. Therefore, this paper presents only the theoretical aspects of this new concept and reviews the opportunities of using it in practice. Originality: The paper describes a new phenomenon in the area of innovation activities. The added value of the paper lies in the identifi cation of various factors infl uencing the development of living labs.

Intensive global warming, declining natural resources, and pollution are the factors influencing the wider debate about what creates a “green economy.” Taking the above into account, the purpose of this paper is to present an overview of the eco-innovation performance of European Union members and, at the same time, their overall level of innovativeness. The paper also provides insights into the role of eco-innovation as the driving force for the international competitiveness of enterprises from European Union countries. The results at the macro level show that there is a strong interdependence between the level of innovativeness and the level of eco-innovation implementation in the EU Member States. In turn, the micro-analysis conducted for EU enterprises shows that there is an interdependence between the introduction of eco-innovation with benefits for the end-user and the level of international competitiveness measured by the intensity of exports. Enterprises from countries with a higher overall Innovation Union Scoreboard (IUS) and Eco-Innovation Scoreboard (Eco-IS) are simultaneously characterized by a higher intensity of eco-innovation, introducing benefits for the end-user, and an intensive presence with sales on foreign markets. Enterprises from countries with low IUS and Eco-IS rankings, including the countries of Central and Eastern Europe, are characterized by a relatively low intensity of introducing eco-innovation accompanied by a relatively low export intensity.

Opis:
In a globalisedworld, innovationis the driving force of the economy. In Poland, the public sector can support innovation to a large extent thanks to the Public Procurement Law, amended in 2016, which introduced a new procedure - innovation partnership. Judging by the scale of public spending, public procurement can become a powerful tool for the development of innovation in the economy. The aim of this article is to examine how innovation partnership can influence the effectiveness of investment projects. The assessment of processes related to the purchase of innovative solutions by the public sector with the use of public procurement and the innovation partnership mode shows that the use of this mode in various sectors of the economy may significantly improve the quality of tasks performed by them. In the study, the model method was applied based on the evaluation of the practice of using innovation partnerships in selected countries and the analysis of the transferability of these solutions to Poland. The evaluation took into account the specificity of public procurement procedures and innovation partnerships resulting from legal conditions and the national socio-economic environment. Weaknesses in the application of this procedure were identified, which cause that the innovation partnership is not a commonly used mode of investment projects implementation, and recommendations were formulated in order to reversethis trend.  JEL Classification: O30, O31, O38
