Opis:
Objectives: Good ventilation is more important in hospitals than in many other buildings. The objective of this study was to evaluate the effect of the condition, performance and modernity of ventilation systems on the perceived indoor air quality (IAQ) and the indoor air-related symptoms of hospital personnel. Materials and Methods: An inspection and evaluation graded on a 1 to 3 scale of the condition, performance, and modernity of the ventilation systems was carried out in ten central hospitals in Finland. The perceived IAQ and the related symptoms were collected by means of an indoor air questionnaire survey among the workers in these hospitals. Results: The condition, performance and modernity of the ventilation systems were good in 40% of the hospitals included in the research and poor in another 40% of them. In hospitals where the majority of the ventilation systems were assessed to be good, the prevalence of the indoor air-related complaints and symptoms was lower than in hospitals where the majority of the ventilation systems were assessed as needing extensive repairs. Conclusions: The condition and performance of the ventilation systems in hospitals had a significant impact on the perceived IAQ and the symptoms observed among the employees in Finnish hospitals. Therefore, it is important that hospital ventilation systems are maintained properly and regularly. Furthermore, they should be renovated, at the latest when their technical lifespan expires.

Opis:
The quality of the internal environment is an extremely important issue, because users of rooms spend a significant part of the day inside buildings. The quality of the environment is largely dependent on the quality of the indoor air. The parameters of the air we breathe affect our health and the comfort of use of the rooms. Poor indoor air quality can cause a decrease in human comfort and various illnesses and ailments. Therefore, care should be taken to ensure adequate ventilation in the rooms, especially those that have an additional source of pollutant emissions. The purpose of this work is to examine the effect of heating a commercial premises room with a gas heater on air quality. The following parameters were measured as part of the tests: carbon dioxide concentration, air temperature and relative air humidity. The most important parameter significantly affecting the deterioration of the quality of the interior microclimate is carbon dioxide, the level of which reached high values, well above the hygienic minimum (1000 ppm). In order to compare the values of the tested parameters, the measurements were carried out in two options - for a period of five days with the stove running and another two days without additional heating.

Opis:
Badania przeprowadzono podczas okresu grzewczego (marzec) i bez ogrzewania (maj). Próbki powietrza pobierano przed lekcją oraz podczas jej trwania. Zidentyfikowano następujące bakterie i grzyby: Bacillus lentus, Bacillus licheniformis, Bacillus pumilus, Bacillus cereus,Pseudomonas stutzeri, Micrococcus ssp., Staphylococcus xylosus, Staphylococcus saprophyticus, Staphylococcus haemolyticus, Acremonium, Aerobasidium, Aspergillus, Aspergillusniger, Alternaria, Cladosporium, Epicocum, Mucor, Penicilinium. Wśród tych drobnoustrojów wykryto obecność mikroorganizmów chorobotwórczych i o silnym działaniu uczulającym.

Investigations were carried out in the Department of Conservation of Painting and Polychrome Sculpture and in the Screen Printing Studio of the Faculty of Art at Nicolaus Copernicus University. Concentration of the vapours of organic solvents was measured in 2 workshops: the Art Conservation Studio and the Screen Printing Studio. This study attempts to evaluate the work environment in both studios by analysing the concentration of vapour solvents over 5 to 7 years of measurements. Volatile solvents—aliphatic and aromatic hydrocarbons, alcohols, esters and ketones—were detected in investigated workplaces. These compounds have a wide range of applications in cleaning and removing old varnishes, lacquers and paints; inhalation is the main route of exposure. Vapour was collected using an active sampling method.

A microbiological analysis of indoor air quality in offices, lecture rooms, and hallways in a public utility building has been carried out in the Lubuskie Voivodship (Poland). In one of the storage rooms, the presence of fungi on the building partition was found in the place of water infiltration as a result of a technological failure in the building. A total of 17 nonresidential interiors were examined. The total number of psychrophilic and mesophilic bacteria and the total number of fungi were sampled by the collision method with the air sampler. A qualitative analysis has been performed of fungi present in the indoor air and from building partition of the studied interiors. A total of 11 species of fungi have been specified. Relative humidity and air temperature were measured with a hygrometer. The studies showed that the number of psychrophilic bacteria in indoor air was in the range 0-730 CFU/m3 , while the number of mesophilic bacteria was slightly higher (0-896 CFU/m3 ). A high level of contamination and a large number of fungi (734 CFU/m3 ) were found in the indoor air of storage room, where the problem of biodeterioration of building partitions occurred. In the remaining rooms, the level of microorganisms was low or moderate. Microbiological tests of the outdoor air (background) did not reveal an excessive number of microorganisms in the air.

The influence of the CO2 concentration in a local air zone in naturally ventilated residential houses on the residents’ behaviour was numerically investigated. A numerical two-dimensional CFD model of the indoor zone based on experiments performed by the authors was used. Different resident locations in the fluid domain and different inlet velocities imposed by wind were considered in simulations. The overall thermal comfort and IAQ indices were also calculated. The investigations results show that in contrast to the overall air quality, the local CO2 was strongly dependent upon the resident location, fresh air inlet velocity and ventilation system type.

The quality of air that people breathe has become a very important parameter of quality of life. Pollution contributes to numerous diseases, problems with the absorption of knowledge, and also reduces work efficiency. The article attempts to find the relationship between road traffic and indoor air quality. The parameter used to assess air pollution was particulate matter (smog). The research was carried out in three localisations with different traffic volumes, in three places for each localisation, in the summer, autumn, and winter periods. It was found that in areas with heavy road traffic, this traffic causes an inflow of pollutants into the rooms. In low-traffic localisations, sources other than road traffic have a greater impact on the indoor air quality, especially in the cool periods (autumn, and winter)
Badania przeprowadzono w trzech lokalizacjach o różnym natężeniu ruchu, w trzech miejscach dla każdej lokalizacji, w okresach lato, jesień i zima. Stwierdzono, że w lokalizacji o dużym natężeniu ruchu pojazdów ruch ten powoduje napływ zanieczyszczeń do pomieszczeń. W lokalizacjach o małym natężeniu ruchu większy wpływ na jakość powietrza wewnętrznego mają inne niż ruch drogowy źródła, szczególnie w okresach chłodnych (jesień, zima).

This paper discusses the possibilities and limitations of using biophilic installations to improve the indoor air quality in residential and commercial spaces. Modular plant systems can provide the support or, in smaller facilities, even an alternative to the conventional indoor air purification techniques, such as filtration. The unquestionable advantage of green walls is their comprehensive influence on the indoor air quality by shaping both appropriate thermal and humidity conditions as well as the chemical air composition. However, these constructions are not mechanical systems and therefore, the effectiveness of these specific types of living air purifiers in removing gaseous pollutants and particulate matter cannot be expected to match the level of traditional systems.
W pracy omówiono możliwości i ograniczenia wykorzystania instalacji biofilicznych do poprawy jakości powietrza wewnętrznego w przestrzeniach mieszkalnych i komercyjnych.

ObjectivesThe study examined the extent and prevalence of perceived indoor environment-related (IE-related) symptoms environmental complaints and psychosocial work environmental factors in Finnish office, school and health care environments.Material and MethodsThe data were collected from non-industrial workplaces (N = 455) in 2011–2012 and 2015–2017 using the Finnish Institute of Occupational Health’s Indoor Air Questionnaire (IA Questionnaire). Suspicion of IE-related problems was reported in 59% of workplaces. The data consisted of 28 826 employees’ responses.ResultsThe employees reported symptoms and environmental discomfort in office environments less often than in school or health care environments. The most often reported IE-related complaints were stuffy air (39% of respondents), dry air (34%) and insufficient ventilation (33%). The most often reported symptoms were irritation of the nose (27% of respondents), irritation of the eyes (26%), and hoarse or dry throat (24%). The results showed differences between the perceived IE in office, school and health care environments.ConclusionsCompared to earlier findings, the most often perceived IE-related symptoms and complaints have increased in Finnish health care environments. The office employees’ perceptions of psychosocial work environment remained fairly unchanged whereas health care personnel more often assessed their psychosocial environment as positive compared to previous reports. Instead of exact reference values, comparing the results of IA Questionnaires with the distributions and mean values of the results of this study may be more informative for those striving to solve IE-related problems. The presented distribution and mean values of perceived symptoms, environmental complaints and psychosocial work environment might help to relate the results to other workplaces. This, in turn, might increase the understanding that IA Questionnaire results are influenced by many factors. The results presented can be used as new reference material when interpreting the results of IA Questionnaires in office, school and health care environments.

Efficient air-cooling systems for hot climatic conditions, such as southern Europe, are required in the context of Nearly Zero Energy Buildings. Regenerative indirect evaporative coolers, RIEC, and desiccant regenerative indirect evaporative coolers, DRIEC, could be considered an innovative alternative to direct expansion conventional systems, DX. The main objective of this work was to evaluate the seasonal performance of three air-cooling systems in terms of thermal comfort, air quality and energy consumption in a standard classroom. Several energy simulations were carried out to evaluate these indexes in the climate zone of Lampedusa, in Mediterranean area, by using European Standards. The simulations were based on experimentally validated models. DRIEC system was the recommended system to serve a standard classroom in terms of thermal comfort and RIEC system in terms of air quality and energy consumption. DX system achieved similar comfort favourable conditions to DRIEC system. However, it always worked in III unfavourable category of air quality and consumed three times more than RIEC and DRIEC systems.

Due to its irritating, allergenic, toxic, pathogenic, and carcinogenic effects, suspended particulate matter (PM) seriously threatens human health. Therefore, it seems obvious to control the level of concentration of PM2.5 and PM10 particles and their reduction in the indoor environment such as homes, workplaces, or public utilities. In the following work, an attempt was made to determine the efficiency of a home air purifier based on the concentration of PM2.5 and PM10 particles at selected measurement points in a teaching room located in the building of the Bialystok University of Technology. The tests were carried out in March and in April 2021, using the DT-96 meter, which measured the concentration of PM2.5 and PM10 in the air. The study included the time and intensity of air purifier operation. In addition, reference was made to the concentration of PM2.5 and PM10 in outdoor air, which was measured at measuring stations in the city of Bialystok. The obtained test results made it possible to assess the initial state of air quality in the test room, as well as to determine the parameters affecting the best efficiency of the air purifier and to notice the dependencies in changes in the concentration of PM2.5 and PM10 between the indoor and outdoor environment.

This paper discusses the importance of indoor air quality and indicates its relation with outdoor air quality in the area of spa treatment. Significant factors and sources causing indoor air pollution by particulate matter and radon are considered. Particular attention is drawn to specific functions of health resorts in spa treatment in the context of the importance of indoor and outdoor air for patients staying in the resorts. It is underlined the specificity of health resorts providing treatment for patients classified as the group most sensitive to air pollution, i.e. people with chronic respiratory diseases. The study comprised measurements of 24-h concentrations of PM10, PM2.5 and 10-minute instantaneous concentrations of radon-222 (222Rn) from February 5 to February 25, 2021 in a treatment room of one of the Polish spas located in Lower Silesia. The analysis of interactions between the concentrations of two fractions of particulates PM10 and PM2.5 was presented. The interaction and dependence of factors affecting the elevated values of concentrations of the studied pollutants were discussed. The presented analyses showed that the concentrations of the studied pollutants were influenced by air exchange and air infiltration from outside to inside. In the case of short-term measurements of 222Rn activity concentration in the air, it was found that the observed changes in hourly concentrations of 222Rn are analogous to those observed in residential buildings. For the specific time intervals, the variation of PM concentrations and 222Rn activity concentration was found to be similar.

Opis:
Polybrominated diphenyl ethers (PBDEs) are additive flame retardants which have found applications in polymers for many consumer plastic and electronic goods. Wide use of these chemicals has led to their extremely high concentrations in the indor environments. This paper presents an exploratory study of the photodebromination of five individual lower polybrominated diphenyl ether congeners (BDE-28, BDE-47, BDE-99, BDE-100 and BDE-101) irradiated with white light and different UV (A, B, C) light ranges. The capability of photodegradation of lower PBDEs under room lights was proven by the debromination which occurred with various effectiveness for the selected PBDE congeners and depended of light source. Almost all PBDE congeners showed the greatest decay when exposed to UV-C, with the exception of BDE-100. The decay of irradiated congeners occurred rapidly during the first 5 min of experiment. The final degradation varied from 38% decay (BDE-28, UV-C) to 94% (BDE-47, UV-C). These findings can help in predicting PBDE behavior in indoors and also be useful in the design of PBDE remediation processes.

The microbial quality of the working environment was assessed in winter in air-conditioned office buildings in Warsaw. The average indoor concentrations of bacterial and fungal aerosols were low (<103 cfu∙m–3), below Polish proposals for threshold limit values in public service buildings. Even during cold months, if the air-conditioning system works properly, people remain the main source of bacterial aerosol in offices, whereas infiltration of outdoor air remains a major mechanism responsible for their fungal contamination. An analysis of the bioaerosol size distribution showed that microbial propagules that reach both the upper and lower respiratory tract may evoke numerous adverse health effects from irritation and asthmatic reactions to allergic inflammation. A comparative analysis of viable and total airborne microbial counts showed that viable micro-organisms accounted for up to 0.3% of the total number of microbial propagules. Hence, a comprehensive hygienic assessment of office workplaces should include an efficient control of both these elements.
