Opis:
The operation of a ship's propulsion system is a variable process in time, which is described in both static and dynamic states. The mutual proportions between them depend primarily on a type of ship and tasks to which it was designed. In a case of special units of particular use (e.g. warships) and ships, which operate on narrow waters such as canals or port basins, participation of dynamic states is increasing significantly. Hence a necessity to analyze the dynamic states of marine diesel engines, among others in terms of their increased harmful compounds emission. The paper presents a methodology of engine dynamic state analysis, emission indicators that can be used to assess the dynamic state of a ship have been proposed. As an example of application, the analysis of harmful compounds emissions during dynamic states while a real cruise of navy ship has been carried out. It has been also proposed to use simple dynamics indicators such as single-base and chain indexes to describe the change in concentrations of harmful compounds in dynamic states.

The article presents the results of emission tests and vehicle operation indicators fueled with diesel oil. The tests were carried out for a passenger vehicle equipped with a diesel engine meeting Euro 3 emissions standard, moving in urban traffic. The measurements were carried out using modern PEMS (Portable Emission Measurement System) enabling the emission of gaseous components from exhaust systems of the tested object. On the basis of the conducted tests, the load characteristics were determined using the torque values obtained along with the engine speeds. The measurement route included two cycles: urban driving and fast acceleration. The aim of the study was to assess the impact of modifications to the control maps on CO, CO2, PM and NOx exhaust gas emissions under real operating conditions.

In many foundries, the requirements placed on castings production have risen mainly over the few years. Further trends in recent years have been the ever increasing level of automation and introduction of new alloys, especially composites. On the other hand, the foundry environment has become increasingly difficult because is used many organic binders. Environmental regulations will be further tightened up. These processes are pursued at national, European and global level. Conformity with emission limits is becoming increasingly difficult. The problem is emission of aromatic hydrocarbons, phenol, odours and other harmful compounds to environment. The main purpose of many companies is reduction of this toxins. The new cold-box systems (based on phenolic resins) try to reduce the emission by introducing into the resin structure silicate modifiers. Research presented of this article evaluate the effectiveness of these methods. The results show comparison of two resins ("without" and "with" silicate modifier) for assessment of emission of harmful aromatic hydrocarbons and phenol.

Opis:
The article presents results which indicate that the use of catalytic reactors to reduce emissions of harmful compunds contained in the exhaust gas is important in the operation of vehicle motors operation. Efforts of the shipbuilding industry to reduce the toxicity of exhaust gas emitted by the main engines have been indicated and pointed to the desirability of the use of these catalysts in maritime transport. It has been pointed out that studies of the harmful substances in exhaust gases performer at vehicle inspection stations have an impact on increasing the safety of drivers and other road users and contribute to preserving the natural environment by reducing the danger coming from cars operating on Polish roads. An opinion has been expressed that the most serious threats to the environment are emitted by car transport exhaust fumes, which are characterized by significant emission of toxic compounds excreted into the atmosphere from tailpipe emissions. It has been demonstrated that a fully functioning catalytic reactor, operating in a steady state at appropriate temperatures and the composition of the mixture close to stoichiometric ratio, can reduce emissions of carbon monoxide, hydrocarbons and nitrogen oxides by more than 90%. Also, an assessment has been presented reporting the efficiency of catalytic reactors of spark ignition engines operating in a test vehicle inspection station. The results of research in the evaluation of their performance were correlated with their operation waveforms. Such an approach is justified by the fact that during the operation of each vehicle the wear of its assemblies and components is different – including the catalytic reactor. The catalytic layer undergoes aging so that there are changes in the structure and chemical composition of the catalyst bed, while the overlapping of layers of different chemical compounds that block access to the active layer of the reactor. An opinion has also been expressed that it would be advisable to take steps to use research results presented in this article for research of catalytic reactors similar use in diagnostic systems of marine combustion engines, especially the main ones, which exhaust emissions are incomparably greater than in the case of car engines.

Opis:
This paper investigated the impact of the exhaust gas recirculation on the concentration of selected harmful chemical compounds from the AVL 5402 research diesel engine powered with diesel fuel (DF) and compressed natural gas (CNG). The engine was operated in the dual fuel mode. It means that the engine was conventionally fuelled by regular diesel fuel and simultaneously by CNG dosed into the inlet pipe. The necessary tests were carried out for the mixtures containing 30, 50 and 70% of CNG (by energy content) in the total chemical energy delivered together with diesel fuel (DF) into the combustion chamber. The research was conducted for the stationary conditions of the engine operation at 1200 rpm and constant 1004 Joules of a fuel chemical energy delivered in each cycle into the combustion chamber. Under such conditions, the impact of the EGR rate changed in range of 0–50% on the emissions of selected unburned hydrocarbons (HC), carbon monoxide (CO), nitrogen oxides (NOx) as well as particulate matter (PM), was evaluated. The obtained results confirmed that the EGR system is effective in the reduction of the NOx formation for all tested fuel mixtures. Nevertheless, it was found that the addition of CNG combusted in the diesel engine generates more harmful pollutants in comparison with diesel fuel. However, in some cases the concentration of NOx as well as PM was comparable or lower. It suggests that the combustion of CNG in diesels allows achieving environmental benefits. In this case, further optimization of the engine fuel supply system is necessary.

Comparative analysis of combustion and hybrid propulsion unit in aviation application in terms of emission of harmful compounds in the exhausts emitted to the atmosphere. For the propulsion of the AOS 71 motor glider, two types of propulsion were planned as development versions. The first analysed propulsion is based on a combustion engine, but of the Wankel type (LCR 814 engine with the power of 55 kW). The second designed propulsion is an hybrid based on a LCR 407 combustion engine with a power of 28 kW, which is connected in series with an electric generator propelling the engine (Emrax 228 engine), total power of the propulsion is 55 kW. The comparison of emissions of harmful compounds emitted to the atmosphere generated by the combustion and hybrid power unit intended for assembly in the AOS 71 motor glider, assuming various loads and methods of hybrid propulsion control, was made. The tests were conducted in laboratory conditions. Several different programs were designed to simulate different energy management methods in a hybrid system, depending on the predicted mission and load of the motor glider. On the basis of laboratory tests, exhaust emission was determined from both propulsions as a function of rotational speed and load. Then, based on the assumed flight trajectory and collected test data, the emission for both propulsions variants was determined. The values of emission parameters were compared and the results were presented in diagrams and discussed in the conclusions.

Opis:
Non-road vehicles type approval tests consist of testing the combustion engines themselves on engine dynamometer stations. As a part of these tests, NRSC and NRTC tests are conducted. The many years of research conducted by the Poznan University of Technology revealed differences in the actual specific emission of toxic components of exhaust gases from agricultural machinery compared to the type approval tests. This is related to the different operating conditions of the internal combustion engine relative to the test cycles. For this reason, the authors conducted a study of the actual emission from an agricultural tractor in a 13-phase NRSC test, modified to more closely reflect real operating conditions. These points were determined on the basis of operating points obtained from tests in real operating conditions. Before the tests, the tractor engine was warmed up to its operating temperature, after which it was loaded by the power take-off shaft with a portable engine dynamometer system. Analyzers from the PEMS group were connected to the tractor's exhaust system, which allowed to determine the concentrations of exhaust components such as CO, HC, NOx, PM, in the type approval testing process. The exhaust emission tests were extended with the solid particles number emission as well as their dimensional distribution, which while not limited through emission norms, is still very important from the point of view of human health and life. The analysis of the results allowed to determine the limit value excess level of specific compounds from the tractor.
Wieloletnie badania Politechniki Poznańskiej dowiodły różnic w rzeczywistej emisji jednostkowej składników toksycznych spalin z maszyn rolniczych w porównaniu do testów homologacyjnych.

The article discusses the results of actions performed by marine engine manufacturers towards the reduction of emission of harmful substances in the exhaust gas from these engines. The discussion is limited to main engines produced by MAN B&W. A model is proposed to describe the process of emission of harmful substances from Diesel engines based on the semi-Markov process, discrete in states and continuous in the operating time. The states of this process are: engine ability state (s1) and engine inability state (s2). A method to calculate probabilities P1 and P2 of the appearance of states s1 and s2 is proposed. State s1 is interpreted as corresponding to the inequality ekek(dop), where ek represents the mass of harmful substances emitted by the engine during its operation and ek(dop) is the maximum mass of emission of these substances permitted by relevant regulations.
