Opis:
The paper presents results of georadar positioning of a set of subsurface conduits, together with an assessment of efficiency of their detection. The measurements on test fields were performed with the RAMAC/GPR georadar, produced in Sweden by the Mala GeoScience Company. Numerous radargrams were properly processed with an optimal filtering sequence, aimed at production of a readable image of the detected conduits. The results were assessed also from the efficiency point of view of the subsurface structure detection method. The phenomenon of signal polarization, which helps to distinguish metallic and plastic conduits, is also discussed. Elements of surveying and computational procedures, leading to completion of content of digital thematic maps by the georadar sensing integrated with GPS positioning, are also given.

Basilica of St. Francisco of Assisi together with the buildings of the Franciscan convent constitute one of the most important points on the map of medieval Krakow. However, their architectural transformations are still not well recognized. In 2015, the opportunity to expand this knowledge occured. Within the basilica itself, along with the adjacent chapels, a comprehensive, non-invasive, georadar floor examination was held. Its effect, apart from confirming the location of known tombs and burial crypts, was the discovery of completely unknown underground rooms. Using small-hole drills, the rooms were recognized as burial crypts. Currently, their diagnosis is conducted by archaeological methods. The presented case study was also an occasion to describe explicitly the methodological bases of crypt identification practice, using connection between some specific construction details characteristic for ancient European architecture and the corresponding GPR manifestations (diagnostic features).

In this article a new neural network based method for automatic classification of ground penetrating radar (GPR) traces is proposed. The presented approach is based on a new representation of GPR signals by polynomials approximation. The coefficients of the polynomial (the feature vector) are neural network inputs for automatic classification of a special kind of geologic structure—a sinkhole. The analysis and results show that the classifier can effectively distinguish sinkholes from other geologic structures.

The aim of this paper is to confirm the thesis that by the usage of laser scanning methods it is possible to find a link confirming the characteristics of swampy land on which the specific building projects are supposed to be carried, as well as their requirements in high accuracy of location and the stability and durability of the substrate. Visible to the naked eye, regular depressions in the ground may foretell the places of underground space, created or influenced by the flow of water or due to geological structures, characterizing the substrate as inconsistent. These spaces seriously affect the possibility of placing wind turbines. By using LIDAR high correlation is visible between the characteristics of the terrain model and the location of underground geological spaces that could endanger the constructions that will be formed in the area. While the construction is being built the ground emphasizes so much that wrong location can simply cause the collapse of the structure. The results were supported with geophysical researches, using three methods: ERT - electrical resistivity tomography, GPR - ground penetrating radar, and the seismic method.

Archeological studies require a precise and interdisciplinary approach. Use of the noninvasive methods in urban area investigations is expected because they do not result in any changes in land architecture plans. Very good combination fulfilling such demands are geochemical analyses of: pH, Eh, conductivity and heavy metals concentrations in soils and the results of the ground penetrating radar method. These methods allow for a more precise selection of places of interest and can be also used for a more accurate calibration and better interpretation of subsequent results. Proposed methodology gives good final results thanks to complementarity of each method and can be used under variable conditions.

The aim of the research was to define the influence of agricultural terraces on slope erosion. There have been selected three plots located on the Greek island Ikaria. On the plots detailed geomorphological mapping was done, spatial relief models were created based on the measurements taken using GPS RTK, georadar profiles were made using RAMAC/GPR and the extent of destruction of terrace resistance walls was evaluated. In comparison with similar forms on other Aegean islands, Ikarian terraces are narrow and high. Their stability depends on: lihtology, slope gradient, height and spatial arrangement of particular terrace steps and the current way of their usage. It was acknowledged that the most stable are the forms created on crystalline schists and gneisses, whereas the slopes, which erode the easiest, are the terraced ones consisting of carbonate rocks. The obtained results indicate that on Ikaria similarly to numerous other regions the most significant factor facilitating erosion on the terraced slopes is the cessation of their agricultural usage.

A method of processing GPR signals based on previously developed algorithms is proposed. The purpose of the study is to increase the accuracy of thickness measurements of near-surface thin layers of multilayer structures. The main idea of the method is to layer-by-layer restoration of physical and geometric characteristics of plane-layered media, for example, car coverings. As a result, with the help of numerical modelling, the operability and practical effectiveness of the proposed method was established. In addition, schemes for the practical implementation of this approach have been proposed for the processing of sounding data of pavement structures using a pulsed ground-penetrating radar "TRF-1". The use of additional procedures, for example, GPR calibration based on data obtained by core sampling, also improves the reliability and accuracy of assessing the current state of road pavements.

The results of laboratory experiments that show the capabilities of modern georadars are presented. Analysis of GPR capabilities allowed to propose a new approach to solving the actual problem of detecting subsurface cracks. The proposed method for recording pulse signals and data processing is based on algorithms and software previously developed by the authors. With the help of this method and the experiments carried out, the possibility of agreed solution to the problem of choosing the optimal parameters of the GPR pulsed signals was shown. To confirm the effectiveness of the developed signal processing methods, a series of laboratory experiments were carried out. The new version of the program "GeoVizy-2020" made it possible to increase the efficiency of processing complex impulse signals, as well as to realize the possibility of calculating the quantitative values of the most important parameters of the road pavement layers - the relative permittivity and thickness. Also, to check the adequacy of the results obtained, a method was used, which is based on the procedure for direct measurement of the real layer thickness in laboratory and field conditions and comparison of the data obtained with the results of numerical simulation. As a result, evidence is presented of the advantages of using pulsed signals for assessing layer parameters, searching for subsurface cracks and processing the results of surveys of road surfaces is presented.

Opis:
Intensified investment processes in construction have resulted in increased interest in the methods of efficient detection, verification and location of underground utility networks. In addition to the well-known pipe and cable locating equipment, which has increased its efficiency and reliability through the development of technologies, GPRs are becoming more and more popular. This publication presents the results of the experimental research carried out with the use of GPRs manufactured by two different companies as well as the results of the verification of underground utilities in real conditions. The GPRs have worked in the mode of the real-time location of their own position using the GNSS system or robotic total stations. The GPR (Ground Penetrating Radar) surveys performed on a test field, consisting of 9 pipes with a known position, were aimed at assessing the accuracy of their identification on echograms. The utility line location errors were determined using three different combinations between the GPR and the locating instrument. It allowed the evaluation of the possibility of using these solutions for detection, verification and location of underground utility networks in the light of the Polish legal regulations and the British specification PAS 128. The verification in real conditions was carried out in a typical urban space, characterised by an intense occurrence of underground utilities, that is, sewage systems, gas pipelines and power cables. It was based on the GESUT database captured from the county geodetic and cartographic documentation centre. The results of the visual analysis of the materials captured with the help of two measurement systems were described in detail, however, the verification was carried out only for one set of data. The authors have presented the procedure of processing echograms and detecting the location of pipeline axes based on their vectorisation. The authors of this research paper have performed a numerical analysis of the compliance of the profiles of utility lines with the information from the base map for two variants of the GPR data integration with the coordinates. The authors of this research paper have also presented an alternative concept of capturing the profile of a utility line in the field based on the processing of GPR data in 3D – the so-called C-scan. The conclusions summarise the possible factors affecting the surveying results and the methods of eliminating sources of errors, both for the GPR and geodetic data.

This paper presents a suggested approach for forensic investigation of bridge decks in which Ground penetrating radar (GPR) consisting of two antennas is used to assess the current conditions. The methodology was tested on a bridge deck in central Sicily. The acquired data were analyzed for identifying the asphalt overlay thickness, concrete cover depth and deck thickness and location of the rebar reinforcement. In the proposed approach for assessing bridge deck conditions the GPR survey was complemented with (i) a site investigation on layer thicknesses for calibration/verification purposes of the GPR response and (ii) a Terrestrial Laser Scanning system (TLS) to verify the bridge design slab curvature. The study shows that this methodology has significant merits on accurately assessing such bridge deck components when bridge design records are non-existing, and by using non-invasive methods such as laser scanning and GPR. The great advantage provided by the TLS technique is the possibility to obtain a 3D output model of the scanned element with the accuracy of the best topographic instruments in order to complement GPR data surveys for bridge inspection.

The primary function of the river dike system is to safeguard lives and property from flood hazards. However, due to aging infrastructure and various geological or anthropogenic factors, certain vulnerable sections of the dike system can emerge as the water level in the river increases. Flood maps are one tool that presents vital information for authorities and residents in the flood risk mitigation. This study's primary goal is to provide a flood map under the dike break condition using the estimated fracture size parameters from a geo-radar survey and the MIKE FLOOD model. This approach addresses the observed research gap by utilizing a survey database instead of relying on empirical models which are capable to produce the conservative estimates of the dike breach outflow. A case study is conducted on the Hoang Long River dike system in Ninh Binh Province, Vietnam.

Opis:
Ground-penetrating radar (GPR) surveys and sedimentological outcrop analyses were combined in order to determine the reflection patterns and internal architecture of terrace deposits of the Vistula River at Kępa Zawadowska in the southern part of Warsaw (central Poland). The sedimentary analyses concerned the granulometric composition and lithofacies analysis. The 34 GPR profiles, which were obtained in two outcrops, using a Malå RAMAC/GPR system with 500-MHz and 250-MHz shielded antennas, were up to 100 m long. The most characteristic ground-penetrating radar profiles are presented; they show a high-resolution data set of radar facies. The GPR data suggest the presence of three geophysically different units, namely with high-angle inclined reflections (radar facies 1), with discontinuous undulating or trough-shaped reflections (radar facies 2), and with low-angle reflections (radar facies 3). The internal structure of the fluvial deposits was obtained by integration of the GPR and sedimentological data, which combination provides a more accurate visualisation of sedimentary units than do reconstructions that are based only on standard lithologic point data.

Opis:
The need arose to repair a retaining wall constructed in 1912, the side of which runs along a railway track with a length of 135 m. Crushed stone and lime mortar was used in its construction but there are no archival records of its geometry, inspection, and elements of design documentation or studies of subsoil geotechnical. Because of the need to define acceptable conditions for its service it was necessary to determine the shape and stability as well as its foundation. In the close vicinity of the wall, at its base a mountain river flows, and on the slope side on a narrow shaped shelf there is an international main line with very intense two-track rail traffic. In view of the extremely difficult conditions preventing engineers from the execution of any drilling near the wall, and due to its height of up to 7.5 m, as well as the inability to stop traffic on both tracks, the GPR method was used to determine the geometry of the wall, and the extent of bedrock layers. Using this technique, supported by outcrops and open pits in the vicinity of the wall, which were used as calibrators, it was possible to carry out the task under adverse terrain and functional conditions.

Opis:
Traditionally, pavement distress evaluations were carried out by visual observation. Traditional practice requires a person to walk along the stretch of the pavement to conduct distress survey, take photo and measure defects occurred at deteriorated surfaces. However, this approach is too subjective, generates inconsistencies of information, less reliable and time-consuming. Due to these shortcomings, the transportation practitioners in pavement maintenance seek for other alternative tools and techniques to arrest incapability of traditional practices. One of the tools available in the market is Ground Penetrating Radar (GPR). GPR is a geophysical tool known by ability to accommodate extensive data in pavement assessment, geotechnical investigation and structural assessment. The application of GPR is such new to most of road maintenance industry in Malaysia. Therefore, this study has been undertaken to evaluate the benefits of using GPR imaging and its application in assessing pavement structures in Malaysia. The GPR survey was conducted in Meranti street located at UTM (Universiti Teknologi Malaysia) campus, and then analyzed using REFLEX 2D simulation software. The finding shows there are three (3) types of information obtained from GPR survey included; identification of raw image and processed image, identification of pavement segments thickness, and identification of GPR response towards surface and subsurface conditions, which illustrated in radargram images. Furthermore, the GPR can perform at high speed and can save time. It is also beneficial for long-term investment due to ability to provide extensive information at a greater depth. The research indicates that interpretation of GPR’s radargram images consumes time due to the low resolution. Therefore, selection of GPR system is subject to level of accuracy and clarity of radar images needed in a project.
