Opis:
The involvement of fathers in nurturing and raising children is regarded as one way of eroding cultural and social inequalities between genders. The aim of this paper is to determine whether there is genuinely an erosion of gender inequalities in those families where fathers contribute to child nurture in the early phases of a child’s life, or whether the status quo is merely modified. It examines when gender equality is (or can be) achieved in families and what the relationship is between gender equality in the family and gender inequality in society. The paper is based on a qualitative study conducted in 2006, in which semi-structured interviews were used to capture the ways in which parents construct their parenting and non-parenting roles, and how they form and perceive their parenting and gender identity. To analyse this issue, the paper also goes beyond this one study and looks at findings from other research and studies related to this issue.

The paper deals with figurative lexical resources of English in the conceptual domain of gender. The presentation and analysis are carried out in terms of the most productive cognitive processes of semantic extensions leading to gender senses of particular lexical units. These processes include various kinds of metaphor, e.g. objectification and zoometaphor, and metonymy, as well as a less familiar concept of syntaphor. Of particular importance are the cases of a new kind of metaphor, called “transgender metaphor” and an integration of metonymy with metaphor in the development of a taboo lexeme cunt used to refer to male referents.

This paper concerns three significant concepts in Maria Komornicka’s writings: body, spirit and gender. The first two are closely related to each other, thus initial paragraphs are devoted to them both. On the basis of these reflections, I draw some conclusion about the image of gender created by the poet. The notion of gender is analysed in terms of Young Poland discourse of gender and from the perspective of modern methodologies: feminist criticism as well as gender and queer studies. This paper aims at encouraging the reader to reinterpret M. Komornicka’s output with contemporary awareness.

Opis:
In recent years the concept of gender has become one of the key categories used in social sciences and in the field of religious studies and its varied dimensions (see: Avishai, Jafar, Rinaldo 2015; Calef 2009; Joy 2010; Woodhead 2007). According to Morny Joy (2010), as well as Afshan Jafar, Rachel Rinaldo and Orit Avishai (2015), we can point to special features and connotations of the concept of gender in this research. Therefore, gender is often understood in research on religion as a descriptive and historical category. This means that it depicts particular life situations of women (rarely men) in the context of religion, including their religious experiences, religious practices in everyday life and at varied levels of religious order (cultural, individual and institutional ones).1 Gender in this interpretation serves not as an abstract tool of sociological analysis, but as an empirical and very essentialist category (Joy 2010). It implies that the concept of gender describes the fates of a concrete community of religious women (and this community is understood as a homogenous and biological one), rather than patterns of the practices reproducing gender rules regardless of the anatomical sex of the social actors following them.

Opis:
This essay opens with the rhetorical analysis of the article which appeared in April 2016 in the Japan Times entitled “An Open Letter to the Japanese Womanhood. Advice on How to Take the Best Parts of the Stereotypes without Becoming One Yourself” in the context of gender inequality in Japan. Japan is one of the three largest economies in the world and a member of G7 group, yet the level of discrimination of women in Japan is without equal in the developed world. Widely criticized by international institutions such as the United Nations or the World Economic Forum, Japan fi nally introduced a new government policy in order to balance the status of women with men. The article examines the recent changes and argues that it is difficult to introduce them because of the gender biased rhetoric and a long history of patriarchal patterns in the society.

Opis:
The paper deals with the development of the gender concept and the way it is moving away from the notions of binary thinking. Its influence on the methods of linguistic analysis is taken into consideration. Different feminist ideologies – liberal, radical, socialist and cultural feminism as well as the feminism of power – are presented in the context of their view on women-men relations. Other ideologies that shape the idea of ‘doing gender’ are shown, too. All of them – postmodernism, identity politics and the globalization trend - come from outside linguistics. The binary classification is usually made automatically as an obvious and natural one. It is done against a strong tendency to underline the fuzziness of male-female boundaries in the philosophical speculations that are a starting point for the research in many disciplines.

The role of gender in the use of Hungarian address forms

Opis:
Forms of address are directly related to the nature of social relationships. The gender of the discourse partners, including the question whether they are of the same or different genders, thus has an impact on the use of forms of address. The goal of this paper is to highlight the major gender-related characteristics of Hungarian address practices by reporting on a comprehensive sociolinguistic study based on questionnaires and interviews. In line with the perspective of social constructivism, the gender-related usage patterns of address forms are interpreted as actively shaping the construal of particular relationships and gender roles rather than merely reflecting them. Thus, the research findings suggest that iterative patterns in the use of more confidential/affectionate forms with women contribute to the maintenance of female gender roles.

Opis:
The connection between Kabuki theatre and Japanese woodblock prints of the Edo period (1603–1868), especially in their portraits of actors called yakusha‑e, offers an exceptional opportunity to analyse perceptions of the sex of the actor: as the hero of the drama, as well as the character performed on the stage. Both phenomena flourished in the Edo period and had a crucial impact on the visual art of the time, inspiring pictures of the Floating World (Jap. Ukiyo‑e). The images on Ukiyo‑e woodblock prints serve as a pretext for approaching the matter of whether to portray an actor as a performer (a man) or as the character performed by him (which could also be a woman, as in the case of the onnagata actor). The author focuses on the actors’ identification with their own sex (only men appeared on the Kabuki stage) and on cases of breaking the convention between the real actor and his stage emploi. In the first part, the paper discusses the historical background of Kabuki theatre, which was invented by a woman (Izumo‑no Okuni) and then after a few government edicts, was allowed to be performed on the stage only by adult men. Since the Kabuki tradition has successfully continued until today, apart from surveys of theatrical archives, the author supports her arguments by also referring to contemporary phenomena, especially the Kabuki performances she has watched in Japan (in such theatres as: Kabuki‑za, Minami‑za, the National Theatre in Tokyo, and Zenshin‑za), and through interviews with actors and people of the theatre. In parallel, Ukiyo‑e images of the Edo period are studied, with core research from the National Museum in Kraków, Poland, and its collection of Japanese woodblock prints (including over 4600 original works from the Edo Period), and with special attention paid to the yakusha‑e portrait by Utagawa Kuniyoshi.
