Opis:
The types and action mechanism of depressant additions, which improves the properties of diesel fuels in low temperatures, were presented. The results of a sixteen different depressants influence on cloud point (CP) and cold filter plugging point (CFPP) of diesel fuels ONA without additions are given in following elaborate. The depressants were applied to samples of diesel fuel in concentration between 500 and 5000 ppm. The present paper shows correlation of diesel fuels ONA CFPP and ΔCFPP depression between depressants concentration. Only a part from the tested depressant additions has a significant impact on diesel fuel cloud filter plugging point at concentration recommended by their manufacturers. Moreover, some of the additions do not decrease the CFPP value. The depressants can be divided into three groups by their effectiveness: first, the ones which decreases greatly the CFPP (from 3 to 11 degrees) by adding only small amount of them (500 ppm), second, with almost no influence on CFPP values in smaller amounts (500 ppm) but reducing CFPP values in larger quantities (to 5000 ppm), third, with no influence on diesel fuels ONA CFPP even in large concentration. In conclusion, lowering the CFPP value depends on the kind of depressant and its concentration in diesel fuel and not on the diesel hydrocarbon composition with addition up to 7% of Fatty Acid Methyl Ester (FAME).

Opis:
Hydrocarbon containing synthetic fuels represent a promising alternative fuels. Despite different chemical compositions, their properties should be similar to properties of mineral fuels, as they are designed for the same drive units. The basic parameter related to the protection of the adequate service life of the power supply devices, including precision pairs, is lubricity. Lubricity depends on a number of factors, including these related to the chemical composition of fuel components and operating additives introduced into fuels in order to modify their properties. The preliminary results of research on the effect of additives: lubricating, anti-corrosion and anti-electrostatic once, on the lubricating properties of a synthetic fuel are shown in the paper. It was observed that there are relations between the content of additives and the dynamics of film formation. It is significant that this does not apply only to the lubricating additive, but also the additive, which protects the correct electrostatic balance by providing sufficiently high electrical conductivity of the fuel. This may indicate that the formation of a lubricating film remains in relation to the intensity of energy transport from the lubricated surface to the molecules of lubricating additives inside the film. The results shown in the paper preliminary confirm the hypothesis, that synthetic components of fuels change the concentration of ordered molecular structures (which are present in mineral part of fuels and which can be responsible for energy transport inside the lubricating film), what resulted in worse fuel ability to create protective film, and anti-electrostatic additive improves lubricity of blends of synthetic and mineral components.

Opis:
Oils can be optically described by two parameters: light absorption coefficient and light refraction coefficient. Spectrum of absorption coefficient manifests itself in colour of oil, whereas spectrum of refraction coefficient impacts on both refractive and reflective properties of interface between oil and surroundings. Both spectra of absorption coefficient and refraction coefficient have distinctive slopes in ultraviolet edge of spectrum where values of mentioned coefficients decrease from extremely high in ultraviolet to relatively low in visual range. Possibility of perceiving of oil existing in the form of thin film or in the form of an emulsion depends on ambient light conditions and on mentioned optical properties. Additionally perceiving of oil depends on thickness of the oil film and on type of substrate on which oil is spread (water, metal etc.), as well as - if emulsion oil-in-water or water-in-oil is considered - on the droplets size distribution. The present paper begins with a review of optical properties of several oils. Next, an impact of changes of those properties on optical properties of an oil film (spread on water) as well as an impact of those properties on optical properties of oil-in-water emulsion is explained. Finally, exemplary results of numerical simulation of light transfer in marine environment (using above optical properties) - e.g. angular distributions of optical contrast of both sea areas clean and polluted by an oil-film are presented.

It is oblivious, various properties of fuels cause different thermal loads of engines. Question is, how big is this effect and what fuel compound and its property play insignificant part. This paper is focused on problem of quality of diesel commercial fuels in Polish market and it is a challenge to find answer for question mentioned above. The academic staff from Wroclaw University of Technology organized tests with different commercial fuels. Chemical and physical properties of these fuels were studied and used for investigation to define relationships between them and thermal load during simulation process. All researches were done in the lab of Division of Motor Vehicles and Internal Combustion Engines at the Wroclaw University of Technology. Tests have showed differences in chemical and physical properties of fuels, but there is no statistics effect on engine parameters. Results have not also pointed any important differences in thermal loads of engine VW1,9 TDI and its components according to different physical and chemical properties of tested fuels. It is probably because there are differences of calorific values from one side but from other hands various density and specific fuel consumption compensated these differences. To burn unit of fuel contains higher level of oxygen, engine needs lower amount of air, so it gives, for the same fuelling system, lean mixture. It causes higher temperature of exhaust gases and a bit higher exhaust losses

Opis:
In connection with the increase in the price of fuel based on hydrocarbons, the search and use of alternative types of fuel for machines in the mining and oil production industry is quite relevant today. Most of the existing alternative fuels by themselves cannot be considered as ready-to-use motor fuels. One of the ways to solve this problem is to use their mixtures with commercial fuels in certain ratios. This work deals with the development and research of the main characteristics of the mixer for obtaining mixed fuels based on diesel fuel and soybean oil, as well as the results of the study of the physical and operational properties of the obtained mixtures of different volume ratios of diesel fuel and soybean oil. The process of obtaining a mixed alternative fuel based on diesel fuel and soybean oil was implemented on a developed installation consisting of a mixer, the design of which is protected by a patent of Ukraine, and a gear pump. The study of the characteristics of the mixer as part of the installation showed that at a temperature of the components of the alternative fuel of 20°С, with a loss of full pressure on the mixer Δр ≈ (60-65) kPa, the volume consumption of soybean oil reached 10.7.10-6 m3/s. The time of preparation of the fuel mixture in the amount of 195 liters with a content of soybean oil of 10% ranged from 30 to 33 minutes. As research has shown, mixing soybean oil with diesel fuel in the amount of 5-50% vol. provides an improvement in viscosity-temperature properties and makes it possible to use such mixtures in diesel engines without changes in the design of the power supply system and regulation of fuel equipment, which characterizes soybean oil as a promising additive to diesel fuels to improve their technical and operational performance.

Opis:
Recently, steps have been taken to introduce synthetic hydrocarbons to aviation fuels as biocomponents. This action is an innovative change in the approach to aviation fuels. This new approach to the assessment of fuel properties requires a revision of the existing criteria for their quality assessment, including those relating to tribological properties. In the requirements for Jet fuel, only the BOCLE test simulating continuous circular motion was used to assess lubricity. Research on the use of fuels containing components with highly differentiated chemical compositions indicate that the BOCLE test may be an insufficient criterion for assessing the lubricity of fuels for aircraft turbine engines. An additional HFRR test modelling the processes accompanying the reciprocating friction that occurs in some lubricated elements of the fuel system has been proposed. This article presents the results of BOCLE and HFRR tests on a range of Jet A1 fuel mixtures and various synthetic paraffin hydrocarbons. A preliminary analysis of the observed effect of synthetic hydrocarbons on the results of both tests is presented.
W artykule zaprezentowano wyniki badań w testach BOCLE i HFRR gamy mieszanek paliwa Jet A1 i różnych syntetycznych węglowodorów parafinowych. Przedstawiono wstępną analizę zaobserwowanego wpływu syntetycznych węglowodorów na wyniki obu testów.

The work involved physico-chemical analyses of non-normative fuel and its effect on the operational properties of the powered vehicle. The research fuels were two gasolines, characterized by a reduced resistance to oxidation processes due to their long-term storage. The results were compared to the properties of conventional fuels that met all normative requirements. The studies have shown that the fuel slightly deviating from the standard parameters does not noticeably affect the useful properties of the vehicle.

It is necessary to use specific modifiers in order to reduce harmful emissions arising in the combustion of liquid fuels into the atmosphere. Such modifiers include organic metal salts which are soluble in fuels and tend to form metal oxides under combustion process conditions, improving the oxidizing properties of fuels. The modifier, described in this paper was used in liquid fuel combustion tests, showing a desirable effect of reducing CO, NOx and hydrocarbon emissions. For such modifiers to be approved for use, examination of their physico-chemical, toxicological and ecotoxicological properties is required according to REACH Regulation. REACH is intended, first of all, to provide appropriate protection to the environment and human health, while striving to maintain competitiveness of European enterprises in the global market. Discussed in this paper are the results of selected tests of the effect of an iron-based modifier for liquid fuels on human health and on the land and air and the aquatic environment. The modifier was subjected to physico-chemical analyses, and toxicological and ecotoxicological tests in accordance with good laboratory practice and OECD guidelines. The test results indicate that the modifier is a safe substance, posing no hazard to human health or the environment.
W celu ograniczenia emisji szkodliwych produktów spalania paliw ciekłych do atmosfery występuje konieczność stosowania specyficznych modyfikatorów. Jednym z rodzajów są rozpuszczalne w paliwie organiczne sole metali, które w warunkach procesu spalania tworzą tlenki metali poprawiające własności utleniające paliw. Opisany modyfikator zastosowany został w testach spalania paliwa ciekłego, gdzie wykazał korzystny wpływ w ograniczeniu emisji węglowodorów, CO i NOx.

The key metrological issue of substance and energy balance in research engines is the precise determination of the elemental composition of the applied fuel and its net calorific value. This makes it possible to calculate the amount of heat brought with the fuel into the combustion chamber, as well as the amount and gas composition of the exhaust. However, to fully assess the energy quality of the fuel used, its ignition properties should also be estimated. They determine the combustion kinetics and, consequently, the course of gas pressure alterations and heat release in the cylinder, which have a direct impact on the indicated power and thermal efficiency of the engine. This article presents the methodology for carrying out this type of laboratory tests and their representative results concerning six different low-sulfur marine fuels used to feed marine engines at present. The considerations focus mainly on measurement technology, as well as the measuring apparatus applied today. Additionally some existing metrological difficulties that might be met were shortly described. The laboratory tests in question stand for the first stage of the program of testing a new kind of low-sulfur marine fuels in real operating conditions of a diesel engine, which was carried out at the Department of Ship Power Plants of the Gdańsk University of Technology.

Opis:
Modern spark-ignition engines used for the propulsion of low emission vehicles are fuelled by injection systems in which the fuel is individually metered to each cylinder by a single injector (multipoint injection). For the proper engine operation, it is necessary that the injectors are similar to each other and stable in respect of the fuel dosage during the whole engine operation. This requirement is satisfactorily met by petrol injectors used by OEM. In contrast to petrol injectors, gas injector used in LPG-fuelled vehicles, in particular for the retrofit, are still in the development phase and therefore their quality and production consistency are often regarded as unsatisfactory from the standpoint of view of the proper engine operation. The injector-to-injector variation in the fuel dosage results in air-fuel mixture maldistribution in the cylinders, which, in turn, affects vehicle emission characteristics. The paper presents results of an investigation of inconsistency of gas injectors used in LPG vehicles in respect of their dosage. The method of measurement of the dosage uniformity is described. On the basis of the measurement, three sets of injectors differing in respect of injector-to-injector variation were selected for further vehicle tests. Tests were conducted on a passenger Euro 4 car. The emissions of limited pollutants were measured over the NEDC type-approval cycle and cycle's representative for the real world driving under Polish driving conditions. The paper presents results of the conducted tests and discusses the effect of injector-to-injector variation on the pollutant emissions.
