One salient feature of Robert Frost’s aesthetics was his sharp differentiation of the visual from the audile imagination. Frost (a former schoolteacher) had noticed the difference between visual and audile/phonetic readers, and considered the eye reader to be a ‘bad’ reader. The article examines those features of Frost’s own poetic practice which would have led him to consider the eye reader a bad reader, as well as the sorts of prosodic content an eye reader may be prone to miss. Having examined Frost’s aesthetic objections to the eye reader, the question is then posed: does Frost ever treat the “eye reader,” or oral versus visual predilections, thematically in his artistic writings?

Fourteen hydroxyproline-resistant cell lines were selected by plating 7 days old cell suspensions of Solanum tuberosum L. cvs. Desiree and Maris Piper on a cell plating medium containing 5 or 10 mM hydroxyproline (hyp). Cell suspensions were either plated directly on selective media or after mutagenic treatment with gamma rays at a dose of 20 Gy or after freezing to –6°C. The frequency of resistant colonies varied from 0.15 to 0.35 x 10-6. Almost all the selected lines possessed increased levels of frost tolerance as compared to their non-selected controls except one indicating that hyp resistance and frost tolerance are not necessarily linked.

Frosts are the most common natural phenomena during the transitional seasons. A frost occurs when the average daily air temperature is positive and the minimum temperature drops below 0°C. The problem of frost occurrence (especially spring frosts) is very important from the point of view of the threats related to crop plant cultivation, because it causes losses in crops when taking place during the plant growth. The aim of the study was to analyze the occurrence of air frosts in the years 2001-2018 in the region of central-eastern Poland on the basis of meteorological data. In the region of central-eastern Poland, the greatest number of days with mild, moderate and strong frosts in 2001-2018 was observed in Białowieża; conversely, it was the lowest in Warsaw. The distribution of the number of days with frosts in spring was similar. The distribution of autumn frosts, however, was different. The greatest number of days with autumn frosts was observed in Terespol and Białowieża, the least in Legionowo and Warsaw. The last mild spring frosts occurred in the period from the 3rd to 7th of April, and the earliest autumn frosts occurred between the 9th of September and the 27th of October. The dates of moderate frosts were similar. The last strong frosts occurred on the 2nd of May and the earliest on the 30th of September. The conducted analysis proved that in such a small area, there is a difference in the occurrence of high frosts observed both in spring and autumn.

The work concerns test results of cement concrete and the use of similarity analysis of distance course. Research procedure was presented and the obtained laboratory tests results were discussed. Composition of concrete mixes was designed. The cement concrete composition includes cement, coarse aggregate, fine aggregate, water, admixtures and a ceramic addition. The addition of ceramic was used as a replacement for part of the fine aggregate Fresh concrete mixture parameters were tested and basic parameters of hardened concrete were defined (density, compression strength and tensile strength). The scope of works included concretes intended for airfield pavements and this concretes after frost resistance test. The test has been conducted in diversified media generally used in the course of winter maintenance. Subject to observations of internal structure of concretes and conducted chemical microanalyses using scanning electron microscope, the contents of diversified elements in four zones were specified. The following zones were subject to analysis: cement matrix, contact area between air pores and cement matrix, contact area between fine aggregate and cement matrix and contact area between coarse aggregate and cement matrix. Based on the results obtained diagrams similarity of the analysed concretes were prepared.

The use of carbonate rocks in building industry as a raw material for the production of construction elements and aggregates has a long history. Yet, a stereotype approach to this group of materials orders to avoid using them in constructions exposed to moisture and frost. It applies to both elements and aggregates for frost-resistant concretes. The problem lies, above all, in significant differentiation of physical properties of available minerals and the lack of clear criteria for standard classification. The article focuses on the differentiation analysis of physical properties of rocks originating from two singled out mines of Devonian compact limestone, located in the region of Świętokrzyskie.

The paper is an attempt to assess thermal conditions in the Dendrological Garden in Glinna against the conditions of the mesoregion of the Szczecin Coastal Region, as represented by five stations (Lipnik, Ostoja, Szczecin, Świnoujście, Kołobrzeg) in a study period of two years (May 2014- April 2016), based on measurements of air temperature taken at 200 cm a.g.l. Spatial variation of thermal conditions of the analysed area was found to be very large and was statistically confirmed. Mean air temperature in the analysed period in Glinna was 10.2°C which, in comparison with the other stations, proved to be the highest value. The absolute minimum, i.e. -12.7°C, was recorded in Glinna in January 2016 and the absolute maximum of 35.6°C in August 2015. It was shown that for the purpose of the assessment of thermal conditions in Glinna on the basis of mean air temperature from the 24-hour period, it is justified to refer to multiannual data from IMGW station in Szczecin. On the grounds of minimum temperature, amplitude, time of occurrence of spring and autumn frosts, as well as the number of days with frost and cold days, it was shown that the Dendrological Garden in Glinna has more favourable thermal conditions than the neighbouring areas.
Praca jest próbą oceny warunków termicznych Ogrodu Dendrologicznego w Glinnej w porównaniu z panującymi w mezoregionie Pobrzeża Szczecińskiego, reprezentowanym przez pięć stacji (Lipnik, Ostoja, Szczecin, Świnoujście, Kołobrzeg), przeprowadzoną na podstawie dwuletniej serii (V 2014 - IV 2016) pomiarowej temperatury powietrza z 200 cm n.p.g. Stwierdzono bardzo duże przestrzenne zróżnicowanie warunków termicznych na badanym obszarze, potwierdzone statystycznie. Średnia wartość temperatury powietrza w analizowanym okresie w Glinnej wyniosła 10,2°C i w porównaniu z pozostałymi stacjami była to wartość najwyższa. Absolutne minimum wynoszące -12,7°C zarejestrowano w Glinnej w styczniu 2016 roku, a absolutne maksimum o wartości 35,6°C w sierpniu 2015. Wykazano, że przy ocenie warunków termicznych w Glinnej na podstawie średniej dobowej temperatury powietrza, uzasadnione jest odwoływanie się do danych wieloletnich ze stacji IMGW w Szczecinie. Na podstawie temperatury minimalnej, amplitudy, czasu wystąpienia przymrozków wiosennych i jesiennych oraz liczby dni przymrozkowych i mroźnych wykazano termiczne uprzywilejowanie Ogrodu Dendrologicznego w Glinnej w stosunku do obszarów sąsiadujących.

The paper presents the volumetric strain test results of differently composed cement mortar samples during the phase transformation of water into ice, and juxtaposes the results with other relevant indicators, such as the water absorption and the degree of filling pores with water. It also presents the possibility of using these observations in terms of frost resistance diagnostics. The investigation covered non-airentrained mortars, which were also subjected to the vacuum treatment and vibration to reduce the air content. It was found experimentally that the volumetric strain of mortar samples soaked in water under vacuum at ΔV/V < 2‰ means the mortar of high frost resistance. ΔV/V > 4‰ indicates that the mortar requires air-entraining regardless of the microstructure and kind of cement.

This paper presents the results of laboratory tests on the properties of cement concrete containing various types of aggregate. The purpose of the tests was to determine the effect of aggregate on compressive strength, indirect tensile strength, air pore characteristics, frost resistance and the modulus of elasticity of concrete for road surfaces. The aggregate that meets the requirements for road concrete was determined on the basis of the tests.
W artykule przedstawiono wyniki badań laboratoryjnych właściwości betonu cementowego z różnym kruszywem. Celem badań było określenie wpływu kruszywa na wytrzymałość na ściskanie, rozciąganie pośrednie, charakterystykę porów powietrznych, mrozoodporność oraz moduł sprężystości betonu przeznaczonego na nawierzchnie drogowe. Na podstawie przeprowadzonych badań wyznaczono kruszywo, dla którego spełnione zostały wymagania stawiane dla betonów drogowych.

This paper presents some of the difficulties of teaching languages, in particular English, in the context of LSP/LAP2 programmes in French universities. The main focus of this paper will be the importance of prosody, especially in English, as an area where these difficulties may be addressed. We will outline the various solutions that are currently being put into place as part of the Innovalangues project, a six-year international language teaching and research project headed by Université Stendhal (Grenoble 3), France. The project has substantial funding from the French Ministry of Higher Education and Research and its mission is to develop innovative tools and measures to help LSP/LAP learners reach B2 on the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages (CEFRL). The languages concerned are English, Italian, Spanish, Chinese, Japanese and possibly French as a foreign language. Initially the project will be focusing on the needs of Grenoble’s students, but the objective is to make the tools and resources developed freely available to the wider community. Oral production and reception are at the heart of Innovalangues. We believe, along with many other researchers, that prosody is key to comprehension and to intelligibility (Kjellin 1999a, Kjellin 1999b, Munro and Derwing 2011, Saito 2012), particularly given the important differences between English and French prosody (Delattre 1965; Hirst and Di Cristo 1998; Frost 2011). In this paper, we will present the particular difficulties inherent in teaching English (and other foreign languages) in the context of ESP/EAP3 in French universities and some of the solutions that we are implementing through this project (Picavet et al., 2012; Picavet et al 2013; Picavet and Frost 2014). These include an e-learning platform for which various tools are being developed, teacher training seminars focusing on prosody and the collection of data for research.

This paper presents results of a study on the in-fluence of 0-150 mmol NaCl dm-3 Hoagland solution on growth, chlorophyll content, photosynthesis and frost resistance of seed-lings of three winter cereals: wheat – cv. Almari, rye – cv. Amilo, and triticale – cv. Tornado. Sodium chloride at 25 mmol dm-3 caused better growth of wheat shoots and roots, both of fresh and dry matter. Higher concentrations of NaCl in the medium decreased the biomass of the tested seedlings. The influence of NaCl on the chlorophyll content in the seedlings varied. The conductometry method showed that the resistance of the cell walls of wheat and rye to low temperature decreased in the presence of NaCl in the growth medium. Luminescence has shown that seedlings that grew in NaCl-containing medium indicatedan impediment of electron flow at a lower temperature than the control plants.
