    In their action, the Russian authorities use a number of different tools, military strength being one of the key ones. Russia’s neo-imperial ambitions are reflected in the new strategic and doctrinal documents. They follow a more confrontational line and emphasize Russia’s desire to frame a new architecture of international security. In pursuing its strategic goals, Russia has undertaken a comprehensive programme of technical upgrade of its armed forces, launches impressive military exercise programmes and militarizes the society. The worsening international situation at the beginning of the 21st century, as a derivative of the growing power and importance of the Russian Federation, posed a threat to the countries of the former Warsaw Pact. The aim of the article is to discuss the military tools employed in the foreign policy of the Russian Federation, both direct and indirect. In areas of strategic interest outside the post-Soviet area, they mainly take an indirect form. An example of Russia’s desire to restore its imperial influence is demonstrations of its strategic combat capabilities, including by taking provocative action in the western direction.

    Titles, seals and coats of arms of Lithuanian dukes have not been hitherto the subject of interest of historians as this issue was mainly addressed marginally in the studies on the symbols of power of Grand Dukes of Lithuania, particularly Jagiellons. Owing to the considerable number and diversification of dukes living in the territory of the Grand Duchy of Lithuania prior to the Union of Lublin, the article focuses on the analysis of titles, seals and coats of arms used by the Gediminas family and their descendants. In the period under discussion the dukes played a major social and political role, particularly at the end of the 14th century and at the beginning of the 15th century since they ruled their own feudal duchies and cooperated (or competed) closely with the Grand Duke. Although in the 15th century they lost their political sovereignty and became part of the class of landowners, they continued to keep many privileges and still played a major role in political and social life, particularly in their provinces. Enjoying the authority and extensive influence, the dukes generated the set of symbols of power and importance, which is worth examining. The analysis of the most representative monuments shows that titles, seals and coats of arms constituted a kind of indicator reflecting the social status and the position of the Gediminas family in the country: different symbols defined the rank of the Gediminas family as feudal dukes, and different symbols referred to their position as wealthy landowners. Both in the first and second situation, the dukes were capable of using the symbols in such a way so as to create their propaganda image and express far-reaching political aspirations. The symbolism of grand dukes, in particular one of the Jagiellons, was available to the dukes and they willingly used it. The fact of being inspired by the monarch’s symbols seems to differentiate Lithuanian dukes from other branches of the ruling European dynasties. It may mean that dukes considered the fact of being related to grand dukes rather than their wealth to be the source of their power and importance.

    Work related to the first-principle modeling of a boiler feedwater heater operating in a power unit is presented, along with theoretical discussion concerning its structural simplifications, parameter estimation, and dynamical validation. The objectives of this work are as follows: (i) formulate a moderately complex first-principle model of a feedwater heater to reproduce operational measurements in real-time simulations, (ii) develop a tuning method for this model, (iii) propose key indicators of heater performance using a model-based approach, and finally (iv) automate the calculation process of the indicators. The first objective has been addressed in this paper while the remaining objectives are dealt with in the second paper. In the first part of this work, the development process of such a model is presented, including necessary simplifications for improving its performance and functionality. As a result of the proposed simplifications, performance approximate to the real-time was achieved on a regular PC workstation for a series of six low- and high-pressure heaters.
    Artykuł przedstawia proces modelowania podgrzewacza regeneracyjnego pracującego w systemie bloku energetycznego z wykorzystaniem równań fizycznych. Artykuł zawiera dyskusje dotycząca uproszczeń struktury modelu, estymacji jego parametrów oraz walidacji. Celami pracy jest: (i) sformułowanie umiarkowanie złożonego modelu wymiennika odtwarzającego dane pomiarowe w rzeczywistej skali czasu, (ii) przedstawienie metody strojenia modelu, (iii) zaproponowanie wskaźników użyteczności podgrzewacza na podstawie podejścia wspartego modelem, oraz (iv) automatyzacja procesu wyznaczania tych wskaźników. Pierwszy z celów zawiera się w tej części pracy, a pozostałe w części drugiej. Pierwsza cześć pracy opisuje proces tworzenia modelu z uwzględnieniem koniecznych uproszczeń w celu podniesienia jego użyteczności oraz funkcjonalności. W wyniku zaproponowanych uproszczeń, uzyskano użyteczność zbliżoną do czasu rzeczywistego na stacji roboczej klasy PC, dla modelu obejmującego zespół sześciu wymienników nisko i wysokociśnieniowych.

The paper discusses a nonlinear least-square optimization technique used to adjust the phenomenological parameters of the feedwater heater model, i.e. heat transfer coefficients. The model variables (e.g. variability of the power rate of energy exchange) and estimated parameter values were used to formulate key performance indicators intended for a model-driven diagnostics approach. The computational process was organized in an iterative process of updating model parameters and indicators. The validation was successfully performed using operational data from a 225MW coal-fired power unit.
    Artykuł przedstawia proces modelowania podgrzewacza regeneracyjnego pracującego w systemie bloku energetycznego z wykorzystaniem równań fizycznych. Artykuł zawiera dyskusje dotycząca uproszczeń struktury modelu, estymacji jego parametrów oraz walidacji. Celami pracy jest: (i) sformułowanie umiarkowanie złożonego modelu wymiennika odtwarzającego dane pomiarowe w rzeczywistej skali czasu, (ii) przedstawienie metody strojenia modelu, (iii) zaproponowanie wskaźników użyteczności podgrzewacza na podstawie podejścia wspartego modelem, oraz (iv) automatyzacja procesu wyznaczania tych wskaźników. Pierwszy z celów zawiera się w pierwszej części pracy, a pozostałe w części drugiej. Artykuł zawiera dyskusję wyników zastosowania nieliniowej metod najmniejszych kwadratów w celu dostrojenia parametrów fenomenologicznych modelu podgrzewacza wody zasilającej, tj. współczynników wymiany ciepła. Zmienne modelu (np. chwilowy transfer energii) oraz wartości estymowanych parametrów zostały użyte w celu sformułowania wskaźników odpowiednich dla diagnostyki bloku energetycznego wspartej modelem. Proces obliczeniowy został zorganizowany w sposób iteracyjnego uaktualniania parametrów modelu oraz wskaźników, na podstawie danych operacyjnych pochodzących z 225 MW bloku opalanego węglem kamiennym.

    Since most pressing today on a global scale is to be able to unite religion, philosophy, and science into parts of a coherent civilizational whole, and since the ability to unite a multitude into parts of a coherent whole essentially requires understanding the natures of the things and the way they can or cannot be essentially related, this paper chiefly considers precisely why the modern world has been unable to effect this union. In so doing, it argues that the chief cause of this inability to unite these cultural natures has been because the contemporary world, and the West especially, has lost its understanding of philosophy and science and has intentionally divorced from essential connection to wisdom. Finally, it proposes a common sense way properly to understand these natures, reunite them to wisdom, and revive Western and global civilization.
