Opis:
This essay examines the concept of metacollecting in the context of prosopographical studies. Using meteorite collection as a study case, it demonstrates the need for the development of a comprehensive collection attribute database, which does not only include collectors’ names but also forensic information, such as the handwriting style and printing process used in the production of labels, inventory numbers, etc. After a description of a pilot prosopography study on the history of meteorite collecting, the concept of “collection-objects” is introduced and a socio-historical collection index (SHCI) is proposed to help curators determine the socio-historical a priori value of a meteorite specimen in disregard of its scientifific or monetary value. A high SHCI often represents a factual chain-of-custody, which can be used as input in prosopography.

Opis:
Netflix is considered as a global business invested in strategies of diversification, localisation and personalisation in light of several discourses about the streaming service. One presents Netflix as an evil corporation encouraging binge-watching and reducing individuals to data. A utopian discourse proclaims the democratising potential of digital media technologies, including Netflix’s claims about its personalised, on-demand service. An industry discourse laments Netflix’s disruption of the film and television business. Finally, a scholarly discourse maps the political economy and cultural impact of Netflix. Each discourse attaches a particular cultural value to Netflix. Some offer ‘antidotes’, including the niche streamers, with their ‘curated’ collections of specialised content. Both types of streamer are in fact gatekeepers regulating access to cultural experiences and promoting particular ideas of taste and diversity. Netflix’s strategies of customisation and glocalisation, and its activities in the Middle East and North Africa, demonstrate in the end that diversity is good for business.

Opis:
It is a widely accepted trope that museums work for future generations. They often define themselves in relation to heritage: something of the past, which is celebrated in the present and securely preserved for the future. In doing so, museums cloak themselves in a shroud of respectability for appropriately thinking in short and long terms and bravely facing future challenges. But what kind of future is at stake in this imperative to secure a heritage for future generations? Taking on a deliberate speculative tone and a philosophical outlook, this essay attempts to address this question by suggesting that museums organize their work on the basis of three futures, entirely riveted to an economic understanding of temporality. Against these, the essay also proposes a fourth future that not only gives impetus to their existence, but also provides them with the only way out of the economic temporalities that govern their existence.
