Opis:
This paper presents a method of correcting the effects caused by refraction phenomena in an optical measurement system. The correction algorithm proposed can be applied in many different photogrammetric applications affected by these effects. To validate this algorithm, a foot sole optical measurement system that uses several cameras to build a mesh of a foot sole has been used. This measurement system has six cameras that are protected by a safety glass that separates the cameras from the foot to be measured. The safety glass produces an air-glass-air interface that causes the refraction phenomena, producing deformations in the images. Due to the deformations it is impossible to obtain reliable metric information of the images captured using the measurement system. The developed correction algorithm is based on a grid layout and associated polynomials and makes it possible to correct the deformations and extract accurate metric information.

Opis:
Since accurate estimation of the flow kinetic energy (α) and momentum (β) is not easily possible in compound channels, determining their accurate correction coefficients is an important task. This paper has used the “flood channel facility (FCF)” data and the “conveyance estimate system (CES)” model (which is 1D, but considers a term related to the secondary flow) to study how the floodplain width and the main channel wall slope and asymmetry affect the values of α and β. Results have shown that their maximum values at the highest floodplain width are, respectively, 1.36 and 1.13 times of those at the lowest case; an increase in the slope increased their maximum values by 1.05 and 1.01 times, respectively. The mean of error values showed that the CES model estimated the values α and β more accurately than the flow discharge. The maximum differences between the estimated and experimental values were 12.14% for α and 4.3% for β; for the flow discharge, it was 24.4%.

A high pressure resonator transducer (0 to 100 MPa) devised by the author has been described. The elastic element of the converter consists of a cylinder with an offset arranged axis hole. Quartz resonators were used for the measurement of deformations of the pipe. Based upon the results of the transducer testing, a new algorithmic method for the minimizalizsation of the temperature error, that eliminates the need for a temperature gauge has been worked out.

Opis:
Of major concern are the self-absorption correction factors Cs in precise gamma-ray spectrometry of environmental samples. The overview of Cs determination methods (experimental, Monte Carlo calculations, analytical function application) is presented. Among several available methods, the author chose the one proposed by Debertin where the uncertainty level of Cs correction factor is 1÷2%. The point-like detector model is assumed whilst its efficiency is taken to be proportional to the weighted sum (integral) of the number of photons coming from sample volume elements. Computer program was developed to support the computation of Cs by the Debertin's method for samples in cylindrical geometries and Marinelli beakers. The input data are sample dimensions, density and the mass attenuation coefficient. The Cs uncertainty due to an arbitrarily chosen position of a point-like detector would not exceed 1% for the considered photon energies and the sample density range. Utilising this computer program, the relationships Cs(E,ń) were obtained for the applied geometries and a SiO2 matrix to support routine measurements. The SiO2 matrix is widely encountered in environmental spectrometry. This relationship was derived by fitting the computed data with the function Cs(E,ń) in the form proposed by Bolivar. It was shown that while handling this function to samples with the H2O matrix, the error involved in estimations would not exceed 3%.

Coal mine methane is a term given to the methane gas produced or emitted in association with coal mining activities either from the coal seam itself or from other gassy formations underground. The primary reason for measuring methane is to improve the safety of the mines. In recent years, there have been many fatalities in underground coal mine explosions in which methane was a contributing factor. The rapid detection of methane is very important from the point of view of safety of mine workers. This paper presents a concept of fast methane detection by reconstituting its concentration in dynamic states.

Under certain conditions on a function space X, it is proved that for every $L^∞$-function f with $∥f∥_{∞} ≤ 1$ one can find a function φ, 0 ≤ φ ≤ 1, such that φf ∈ X, $mes{φ ≠ 1} ≤ ɛ∥f∥_1$ and $∥φf∥_X ≤ const(1 + log ɛ^{-1})$. The paper presents a method based on artificial neural network (ANN) technique applied for correction of dynamic error of gas concentration measuring transducer. Its response time is about 8 minutes. The results obtained in the research of this transducer were used for learning and testing ANN, which were implemented in the dynamic correction task. The described method allowed for significant reduction of the transducer’s response time – the output signal was practically fixed after a time equal to one sampling period of output signal provided that the stimulus is a step function. In addition, the use of ANN allows reducing the impact of the transducer dynamic non-linearity on the correction effectiveness.

Hyperspectral imagery originating from airborne sensors is nowadays widely used for the detailed characterization of land surface. The correct mapping of the pixel positions to ground locations largely contributes to the success of the applications. Accurate geometric correction, also referred to as “orthorectification”, is thus an important prerequisite which must be performed prior to using airborne imagery for evaluations like change detection, or mapping or overlaying the imagery with existing data sets or maps. A so-called “ortho-image” provides an accurate representation of the earth’s surface, having been adjusted for lens distortions, camera tilt and topographic relief. In this paper, we describe the different steps in the geometric correction process of APEX hyperspectral data, as applied in the Central Data Processing Center (CDPC) at the Flemish Institute for Technological Research (VITO, Mol, Belgium). APEX ortho-images are generated through direct georeferencing of the raw images, thereby making use of sensor interior and exterior orientation data, boresight calibration data and elevation data. They can be referenced to any userspecified output projection system and can be resampled to any output pixel size.

This paper describes a new method of frequency offset correction to improve clock stability in communication systems where the temporary drift or jitter of phase angle is not accepted. This method bases on coherent spectral averaging with a special phase scanning algorithm. Achieved results show that proposed method is effective for strongly degraded signals. Method is useful for precise phase angle reconstruction in these systems where clock stability of the transceiver and receiver is insufficient.

Opis:
The paper presents a method of correcting a frequency synchronization error in the sinusoidal voltage measurement. Correction is performed by changing a frequency of the measured signal on the basis of the respectively determined synchronization error by using DFT. Carried out simulation experiments indicate that the correction can theoretically improve the accuracy of measurement of the RMS voltage to the level below 1 ppm. The results of measurements taken by a highly accurate voltmeter Agilent 3458 confirm the conclusions of the simulation, that it is possible to repeatedly reduce the frequency synchronization error by applying the developed correction method in the voltage measurement.

The innovative system, which was developed for analysis and correction of motor management, is determined for the solution of practical problems concerning the operation of the piston combustion engines. Programming of the ignition curves and fuel maps without relevant feedback, namely, without information obtained from the engine operation, increases the risk of detonation combustion, which can destroy the combustion engine. However, the main application area of this system is the development of an algorithm, which is specified for control of the combustion process based on the HCCI technology (Homogenous Charge Compression Ignition). Nowadays, the functional principle of the HCCI engine is one of the most effective possibilities on how to reach higher operational efficiency of the gasoline engine, that is, closer to the efficiency level of the diesel driving units.

Opis:
So far applanation tonometry has not worked out any theoretical basis for correcting the result of intraocular pressure measurement carried out on a cornea with noncalibration dimensions by means of the Goldmann tonometer. All the tables of instrument reading corrections for cornea thickness or cornea curvature radius are based exclusively on measurements. This paper represents an attempt at creating a mechanical description of corneal apex deformation in Goldmann applanation tonometry. The functional dependence between intraocular pressure and the pressure exerted on the corneal apex by the tonometer was determined from a biomechanical model. Numerical GAT simulations, in which this function was also interrelated with the cornea’s curvature radius and thickness were run and a constitutive equation for applanation tonometry, i.e. a full analytical description of intraocular pressure as a function of the above variables, was derived on this basis. The correction factors were defined and an algorithm for correcting the measured pressure was formulated. The presented formalism puts the results of experimental tonometry in new light. Analytical correction factors need not to come exclusively from measurements. A geometric interdependence between them and their dependence on pressure have been revealed. The theoretical description of applanation tonometry contained in the constitutive equation consists of a pressure function developed for a cornea with calibration dimensions and a coefficient correcting this calibration function, dependent exclusively on the cornea’s actual thickness and curvature radius. The calibration function is a generalization of the Imbert–Fick law.
